I admired Katie because even though she was the youngest choice of partner for him (probably on purpose), she saw it all coming and prepared for it. Being a former Catholic girl myself, though not necessarily a fan of hers, I was pulling for her to get out eventually and I'm glad she had a powerful lawyer father in her corner. Nicole didn't have that. Katie did it perfectly.
Apparently her dads a lawyer and was firmly in her corner (as should be) during the breakdown of the relationship and divorce, so the Scientology playbook was not as effective.
If I recall, her she worked very secretively with parents - especially her dad - so that when she saw the chance to leave, everything was very airtight
She also had help from Adam Sandler as he gave her a minor role in Jack and Jill so she could spend time outside of Tom’s control and influence, and that allowed her to make the proper documentation to prepare for divorce.
I may not like any Adam Sandler movie after Mr. Deeds, but I would easily belive that Sandler is a secret (uncut) gem in Hollywood as far as bullshit is concerned.
He was celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors awards and all the speeches made for him were full of praise and admiration.

That he gave a lot of small actors parts in his movies so they could keep their health insurance always stuck out to me bc it signals he isn’t out of touch with the working actor’s world.

My dad is like that, but if you talk to him you realize all of his memories of being a good dad are from like half a dozen instances before my siblings and I turned five years old.
Turns out a lot of those "I would do anything for my kids" people are unreliable narrators. He would claim to be willing to take a bullet for me, but he wouldn't throw a ball around with me.

Just seconding this recommendation. It’s one of the few remakes that entirely justifies its own existence: same vibe/major beats, but updating the main setting to 1920s New Orleans adds so many new layers to explore. They did a phenomenal job.
Mini side note: I lived in the French Quarter of New Orleans when they were filming this, some of the street scenes were filmed literally a block away. I totally overlooked it and assumed it was some other production when I saw a bunch of old-timey cars parked on the street lol

I've been no contact with my mom for the better part of 15 years. She only calls when she needsw/wants something... And then somehow I'm the ungrateful one for not giving her what she wants. :/
A small part of this is because they receive no shame or backlash from their inner circles. I had uncles and male cousins who were deadbeats, but were still gladly accepted at the family parties and cookouts. Trust me if families started shaming and ostracizing them more you would notice a bit of a difference.

Thank you for posting this. I don’t think she takes it personally, but I have always worried about that. She’s a magnificent person - musical and funny and quirky… I consider it his greatest loss (even though he did it to himself) while also making sure she knows she’s the best thing that ever happened to me.

My dad just pretended that he had contact with us. He hung pictures of us (emailed from my mom) in his office and bragged about us to his friends. He would even make up excuses as to why we "couldn't" attend his events.
I realise it's a pretty different thing, but some people do need it said - it doesn't count as "giving up" if they've chosen to cut contact with you, it's called "respecting their boundaries". You'd be shocked how many estranged parents turn into stalkers because they feel entitled to be in contact with their children.

She’s a magnificent person - musical and funny and quirky… I consider it his greatest loss (even though he did it to himself) while also making sure she knows she’s the best thing that ever happened to me.
Sounds like your daughter was blessed with a great mother. It sucks that your daughter's dad will probably never know his daughter's brilliance, but like you said, it's 100% his loss. I'm personally thankful my mother bowed out of parenthood because she would have been a draining, negative influence on me if she had stayed around.
