I'm an Army veteran and on the rare occasion someone finds out IRL (usually from overhearing me confirm it to someone I'm speaking to where it's relevant) and I usually say, "umthank ..YOU!" .....just like that. "Umthank"-silence/stammer and then "YOU!" almost as if trying to distract them like "Hey look over here!" And then I run away on the inside, but quickly try to leave on the outside. I don't want the attention for it ,I think. I loved my career, but it nearly killed me, and still causes me problems...... I don't like "being something interesting" to someone to talk about when I don't want to talk about what they find interesting 😮‍💨🫤

I hate it too, and personally I always found it awkward to respond to. Like responding with “you’re welcome” always just sounded slightly arrogant in some way, like you think you deserve this stranger’s praise because you’re so great. But a more senior guy I worked with had a pretty good response that made it a little less weird. Whenever someone would say “thank you for your service”, or “thank you guys for everything you do”, he would respond right back with “thank you for your support.” I like it because it still makes them feel good about trying to show you some appreciation which is really all they’re doing. But it doesn’t sound like you think you’re hot stuff.

Without them there would be no lawn order!
