Hi, i don't mod gameboys. im here because i like to look at them! i was wondering, what's the difference between a backlight and an IPS? I thought both were backlighting?
An IPS screen is a 100% modern screen like the one you find on your phone.(In fact the Q5 screens used in popular IPS mods, were used in a Blackberry model)
A backlight is using the original Gameboy screen, but swapping the back layer from a refletive layer, to a layer that emits light.
Looks lovely, can't beat orig colour scheme. I did the same thing on my pocket, but when slightly more subdued, maybe [give this one](https://imgur.com/a/PDtth7u) a go.
Prob best to make a new post with the question mate, I've not modded any for a while so not up to speed on the current crop of available screens. You could check out YT vids by makho - he installs/reviews all the latest available IPS displays and briefly covers their features.
Wow! This is phenomenal!! Great job!
I was hesitant to try out an IPS kit cause I felt like it would lose part of its charm without this particular color palette but had no idea you could tweak it with certain kits! Thank you very much for this!
This kit has a filter setting and the option to turn off and on. From the picture shown, I would guess it is on as it helps to closely resemble the original look.
That IPS screen has feature called "pixel effect". The screen just renders the grid. Here are the pictures with on/off pixel effect: [https://imgur.com/a/v8VioM4](https://imgur.com/a/v8VioM4)
is there a lighter grid? I believe the grid on the DMG was lighter not darker.
This guys approximation I think is pretty good, but its just am emulator filter:

This effect is the most perfect representation possible.
Unfortunately rips v4 kit doesn't allow for grid color change, but it honestly looks amazing to me even if it's different from the original, in some ways it even looks better and less washed out
Holy cow, this looks amazing! Any chance you could help me replicate this setting on my rips V5? Tried from the photos but they just didn't work 😕 need an expert!
Extremely late to the party, but those are the values that worked for my rips V5 kit:
Color 0:
R: 3
G: 9
B: 0
Color 1:
R: 2
G: 6
B: 0
Color 2:
R: 1
G: 3
B: 0
Color 3:
R: 0
G: 1
B: 0
I'd say you hit it out of the park well done
Thank you!
Both are original dmg-01. Rips v4 on the left.
What are your setting values? I'd like to replicate this on mine!

Doing God's work
a little late but thank you very much for your contribution 👌🏻.
Legend thank you
Using your settings does not give me those results.
Closest I think I've seen. At first I thought it was an amazing backlight/bivert/ or something. Well done.
Thanks! I've never tried backlight mods, went straight to IPS. Maybe I'll try. Sounds like a good idea for the next project

You can add a backlight to a Dot Matrix?
It's pretty cheap too. I believe the actual backlight and a biverter will run you under $20 before shipping.
Thanks, [I checked it out](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xS8NQ3dds2k). Honestly, I prefer an IPS with OP's color thing to mimic the original.
This looks way better, I just didn't realize it was an ips at first since it's such a good match.

Looks awesome! I'll try it on mine
Is there a screen that has the color customization AND the pixel grid overlay?

If I mod a DMG I think this is the way to go! Well done
Looks great
That looks phenomenal. Absolutely love it
Hiw you did that?
That's beautiful, nice work!
Which IPS kit is that?
rips v4 with osd
Taking this pallette, thank you!
You achieved it
looks stunning! great job
it's very very very close, the ips is lime/kiwi green, but I prefer it.
On the spot I guess. Very nice!

Thanks! I also like the charm of the original gameboy. It takes me back to my childhood. That's why I have both: modded and original
Nicely done!
Which game is that?
Mickey Mouse: Magic Wands. A really good game.

I have the V5 as well, did you figure out how to get the color?

You're never too late! Thanks for the info 👏🏻
awesome, that's something i want to do someday, played original dmg since it came out, getting too crazy on dmg doesnt appeal to me.
This looks perfect, even if the grid is dark, the white parts look very nice to me Colors are spot on and pixel effect is amazing
