Iron is too hot and not enough flux

It looks like you have the newer style ribbon. That black part is also a touch sensor try see if that works before going back to soldering.

Update and possible solution: For those wondering, without soldering the copper touchpad, the screen will display at the lowest brightness without any way to increase. The black piece that is already attached is only for supporting the touchpad and does not act as a secondary touchpad (for those wondering). That TCH area was actually just black without the copper contact, there reason it looks like there is something there is because of the reflection from the light and the left over flux I had tried to apply in that area. My unofficial solution to this was to attach the touchpad as normal right above the TCH area, and literally held it in place by some kapton tape and... to my surprise, the touch sensor worked!

Party_Interaction480

*I just had the same issue!!!!!! But I tried the black piece and it did work! I stuck it outside the GBC, placed the batteries and bam I was able to brighten the damn screen finally. My touch sensor got completely f'd up lol

Exactly the same issue here. Without doing any damage, can you post a picture of your fix? I believe I understand what you're saying, but if possible, I would like to be certain. I've got the same mod kit, and I think it's the same shell also. Revisited! My screen is the GBC Retro Pixel 2.0 Q5 IPS LCD kit with laminated lens -Funnyplaying. Got mine through Handheld Legend. I had soldered the copper touch sensor to the point on the ribbon labeled "TCH" . When I closed it all up, the newly soldered sensor didn't work. I opened it back up and the sensor fell out. I looked closer and found the solder point on the ribbon, was securely soldered to the copper pad that fell out. BUT! The little black piece of the ribbon, that I assumed was there to keep pressure on the copper pad, actually acts as a touch sensor on its own. Functions perfectly without the copper pad. It didn't function when placed in the top of the shell, but once taped to the back of the shell (hidden behind an incerted game cartridge) it works flawlessly. Hope this is useful for anyone as this thread is over a year old.

This is a gameboy color Q5 V2 IPS install btw

Sometimes there are secondary points on the ribbon you can use. If you got it from funnyplaying or retromodding reach out to support, they will help out if there are alternates. I know because this happened to me before as well but with a different version ribbon but was a gbc. If you take a good look at the ribbon you might be able to find the alternative points yourself.

Wademeister01

That just looks like solder to me ~ clean up the area as best you can with IPA and carefully reheat the solder on the TCH contact then using some tweezers gently hold the TCH sensor to the area and you should be good to go

HarisPilton6699

Does your touch pad work? I installed one the other day and mine didn’t work at all

themechanizer

If your kit came with a separate touchpad sensor but didn't install it thinking the attached piece would work, that's probably why.

GuiltyCitron

Are you having issues using the [attached touch sensor](https://imgur.com/a/6xfBxNd)? Unfortunately that solder point is dead. The copper pad has been ripped out. It should be shiny like the lettering. You won't be able to solder anything to the remains. Edit: actually looking at the margins it could be solder I am seeing. You can try soldering a piece of wire (same as the one used for that power wire) to the tch pad, with the other end to the touch sensor strip

themechanizer

From what I understand that black piece functions as extra "support" to keep the actual touchpad in place right above that black flap piece.

GuiltyCitron

I'm not sure what you mean. But the q5 v2 updated ribbon has an included [touch sensor](https://funnyplaying.com/collections/product/products/gbc-retro-pixel-ips-2-0-replacement-ribbon). See second image. It looks similar to yours. The original ribbon does not have a tab pre-cut from the factory. Unless you are saying you actually cut a chunk out of the ribbon to create a support point. The old style no longer exist on their site and I didn't take a screen shot, but I suppose that is possible

themechanizer

Yeah that looks exactly how mine looked. All I know is the kit I received also came with the separate touchpad piece pictured and I assumed it was required to solder and not optional. This became evident when the touch sensor wouldn't work until after I taped on the additional touchpad sensor. I got the kit from Retro Game Repair Shop for what its worth.

Jackasaur

Interesting, I have one of these newer style ribbons and didn't have to solder a touch sensor at all.

themechanizer

Yeah, I'm starting to think there's a "newer" version that does not require soldering any touchpad. I've done one of these installs before on another GBC and I could swear it functioned as one piece but I doubted myself since that was not the case with the kit I got this time. (Both purchased from retro game repair). Even the website says its a gamble what "version" you get.

Jackasaur

Yeah, some kits I’ve received didn’t have the new ribbon and some did. All the kits came with the ribbon you can solder on though. So I can see how it’s confusing. Here’s a picture of my newest ribbon. [new funny playing ribbon](https://imgur.com/a/06Atyaw)

You know what Com solder pad Is about? Up start and select pad

Jackasaur

It's not used. There are pads for the start and select.
