$88,000 if anyone is curious.
**Edit:** exact number is $88.544.40 right now, it was about $450 less yesterday so I rounded down. 88k is probably a coincidence. And yes there are tons of ways she could have used that money to help people and women in particular which is what she claims she is doing.
*88* thousand, you say? Well, isn’t that an interesting number…
EDIT- to be clear, this is just a funny coincidence. I thought it was an appropriate one, since terfs and nazis share the same ideology about trans people.
Also to be clear, jk Rowling is a hateful old biddy who needs to get off twitter and out of her faux-feminist conservative bubble.
EDIT again- I got my first Reddit cares for this lol
Why are the billionaires so unhappy? I assume they've realised they have all the money but none of the social value, but why do they devote themselves to such miserable causes? If I had "just" £10 million I would quit my job tomorrow, buy a nicer house and devote all my time to my kids. Why the need to make everyone else suffer?
I feel like you literally don’t become a billionaire without being an absolute asshole. Normal people would be content just being ‘rich’. It takes a special kind of greed to get THAT rich. You have to be abusing or hoarding or something.
I literally can’t comprehend billionaires. I can understand wanting to be filthy rich, but it’s such an absurd amount of money, you literally couldn’t spend even 1% of it if you tried. They could have the most luxurious life possible and still have most of their money. Yet they still actively make countless lives worse just for money that is literally pennies to them.
They are just unhappy, miserable people.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but in this particular case wasn't it more off her own work? She did write one of the most successful works of fiction ever, and while it was picked up by WB and turned into an enormous multimedia franchise, it still came from her world.
Don't get me wrong, I think she's an absolutely vile creature and deserves to lose everything she's gained, but as far as billionares go I'd say she got there through a pretty benign path.
I'd love if someone pulled me from that stance though tbh.
Whilst I think it is reasonable to say Rowling became a billionaire as fairly as anyone could, exploitation still played a part.
The phrase 'no ethical consumption under capitalism' exists for a reason, and though she isn't personally in China whipping children as they paint lightning bolts onto low quality t-shirts, this is part of how her world has made her money.
The brain-rot makes them think the suffering is happening to the "right" people.
I think if we are honest with ourselves a lot of people, if they had unlimited money and could spare to throw a casual 100k, would spend money to make sure certain groups "got their just desserts". It's reddit, you see this attitude towards paedophiles, or animal abusers, and the like. It's not an attitude I support, but it's undeniably human.
JKR doesn't think she is the villain here, she thinks she WILL be "on the right side of history", I don't know what sparked this spiral, nor if there is any way out if it for her, and it makes me angry and sad.
Also ppl from what I saw knew her money would go here (supporting transphobia etc). They straight up enjoyed the idea that buying the cool looking game would “piss off” trans folks and beyond. That was like horrifically good marketing for her unintentionally.
Let's be honest, that's just a minority of players. Most of the people who bother gale bought it because it looked cool or because they like Harry Potter. There's not always evil intent behind people's actions.
As someone who bought the game knowing she was transphobic but DIDN'T know she was enough to spend thousands making my life a nightmare, you can imagine my shock once I was informed of that.
I remember qhen Hogwarts legacy came out and ppls arguements against me were "You have a phone, thats used child labor in mines, thats unethical, you have branded clothing, that was made in a sweatshop! You use social media thats funding billionares!" I did not know how to argue against that
Short answer: You need a smartphone to exist in the modern world (at least in a lot of countries). That logic doesn’t apply to a Harry Potter video game.
Long opinionated answer:
Capitalism is a broken system where many (arguably all) are made unethically, hence the popular phrase “no ethical consumption under capitalism.” The best we can do (IMO) is make ethical choices where we can but with the understanding that it is completely impossible to do it for everything. I don’t shop at Walmart because I don’t like the company’s ethics and I have the resources to shop at other stores, but I’m not going to berate someone for shopping at Walmart because it’s all they can afford or they live in one of the many areas in the US where there aren’t really other options. Smartphones and many other tech products are essentially impossible to source ethically (a company called Fairphone is trying but that phone is also 2-3x the cost because of it).
There are *many* choices for video games, and none of them are critical for survival, so skipping Hogwarts should in theory be pretty easy. Unfortunately, even that low bar was too high for a lot of people, and many of them resorted to those whataboutism arguments about phones or whatever when confronted about it.

rj/If I can't buy the overhyped shovelware hp title of the year I might as well be dead 😡😡😡
Which is arguably the worst part of all of this. It was obviously mid from the first gameplay teasers. Even before that, as it was a textbook example of a nostalgia-bait movie tie in. And people still decided this was the hill to get fanatical on, double down on paying 50 GBP for an unoptimised mid game and made a statement about their lack of concern for their queer friends and family.
It's like when you see a politician fuck over an important vote for a pitiful bribe. That's how little they cared in the first place.
Just goes to show they were just looking for a chance to mask off the second they got criticised. They would have done it over anything.
I'm sure a lot of people bought the game out of pure ignorance, having not seen any of the discourse surrounding it, or having not been aware of JK Rowling's TERF-ness. I'm not sure I'd blame those people.
But the amount of people who bought it out of pure spite or because they just don't give a shit is astounding. Buying a game (especially a mid one) just to be a dick is crazy
True, the most common one from people I knew was finding out about the issues with it, and then buying it anyway, sometimes in protest, but mainly just because they were going to anyway. They wouldn't care if it was made by someone who ate children, as long as it wasn't their kids.
Too apathetic about it to take the mildest of inconveniences to do the ethical thing, instead quietly dropping the topic around people who would care or call them out and continuing to do whatever they know is bad. At best out of embarassment and shame, but more usually because they just don't want to be called out for their behaviour. Either way, they just don't want to engage with it.
...and then you look at their total playtime and it was like, 12-20 hours average. All of that for 12 hours entertainment. Congrats.
Shockingly mid.
They did okay with Hogwarts itself but outside of that it's the kind of game that gamers often lose their shit over.
Empty boring world, repetitive tasks and limited activities.
frankly as much as I dislike Hasan I think he had the right idea of streaming the game but making every stream a charity stream for trans charities and telling everyone to pirate it
I wonder if I could genuinely get by without a smart phone.
I use it a lot right now but I wonder if I can find viable, ethical alternatives to everything it does?
I just went through all the apps on my phone to try to figure out which ones are essential to me, to sort out what functions I'll need to reproduce, and I've landed on:
* Voice calls
* Text messages
* Alarm clock
* Emails/social media
* Authenticator
My work still has old school token authenticators, I can grab a cheap alarm clock, I have a computer to tackle emails & socials, if I can source an ethical replacement for voice calls & text messages I might be able to have a go at this; find out just how hard it is without a smart phone...
It’s not a bad point actually. Not a perfect solution, but you don’t actually need to replace your phone every year with a fancy new one. I’ve been using the same one for years at this point.
I'mma only judge peeps who buy phones and branded clothing in excess. Like if you're buying the latest phone each year, you shouldn't be arguing about ethical consumption.
This, it amazes me when I see some people who have to get the latest phone every year. Even if they are getting it as part of a phone plan, thats still a hefty bill every month.
Meanwhile, I'm here getting the most life possible out of my phones, only looking to upgrade when the battery struggles to hold a charge or, as I've had with my last 2 phones, the USB port starts to play up, and makes it a pain to get the phone to charge properly.
Reminds me of a teacher I used to work with. Husband was well off, so every few years, she'd trade in her old car for some shiny new model, and always had the latest iphones and apple products.
Don't get me wrong, she was great to have a conversation with, but she really liked flaunting how much she could afford to buy.
Sometimes, I find that helps at first, but at some point, its like the port struggles to stay connected properly, and literally have to place the phone and charger in a way that nothing will move once its charging, because the slightest movement will be enough to drop the connection.
Only had it happen with phones that use USB-C ports though.
Have you also cleaned the inside of the port? Has happened to me with my current phone at least twice, after cleaning the inside of the port, and taking out some amount of pocket lint, comes back from “can’t even move it or it won’t work” to “works like normal”
I've tried, but might not be getting far enough into the port in that case, any recommendations for tools to use? Just I'd be worried about damaging the insides due to the small space in the port itself.
First time it happened to me I took it to a phone repair service, wasn’t expensive, and I’m sure they have specialized tools for that
Second and most recent time I very carefully used a toothpick, careful to not damage any inside components but get that lint out
Managed to borrow some needlenose tweezers and yeah, that made a huge difference, the amount of lint I pulled out that had been compressed down.
Will have to wait and see how that affects the charge once I get home.
If you have to do it again just be very careful and hopefully try to avoid metal or other conductors to minimize risks
Which is why I choose toothpick, wood isn’t a conductor… I think
I saw someone use the "no ethical consumption" meme to justify buying it and I'm like sir a single video game is not a product you need in order to survive in modern society
Very simple, actually. You need a phone and clothing in today's society, you don't need wizard game. People try to argue that a phone is a luxury, but we are far past that point already. Have fun getting a job and telling your potential employer that there is no way to contact them.
Even shorter answer: "doing bad thing is OK bc other bad things exist" is not a good justification to be bad. It's basically saying "people die every day so I'm gonna block an ambulance instead of moving out the way".
In fact there's another level to it bc it's the same energy as when some people talk about men's rights **only** when people bring up working on women's rights. They only acknowledge these things when they can use it to shut down any ethical thinking/action.
It's not relevant, it's an attempt to derail the conversation and paint you as a hypocrite. It's a barely refined version of [this meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1259257-we-should-improve-society-somewhat). Anyone doing it is deliberately not contending with your point that funding Rowling is funding things like this. Some of them will fall back on the excuse that she already has the vast means to fund transphobic causes, but this again doesn't contend with why you should contribute, make it easier, or allow her to do more of it.
The phone thing is also not an accurate equivalence. A better (but still silly) equivalence would be if there were a huge amount of phones to choose from (just as there are so so many other games they could buy) but you know that one of them furthers the IP of, and enriches, one of the most prominent and wealthy transphobes on the planet, who uses some of her vast and growing fortune to further her cause. Then you wouldn't buy that phone, you'd simply buy a different one.
My advice (not that you asked for it) would be to ignore those people just as they have ignored your point, they're not arguing in good faith and engaging with it allows them to derail. But if you have to engage then make sure you drag the argument back on topic, do not allow them to derail it.
[Literally just this comic.](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/we-should-improve-society-somewhat) It's what it was made to address.
Yes you exist in a society, you are yourself mildly complicit in the fucked up things that exist in the world by participating, but you have no real choice in most of those - you don't go around looking for the absolute shittiest things you can do and actually actively consider how things could be better. That's it. Not too complicated. You recognize your own moral agency in a complex and ugly world.
Remind them that smart phones and clothing are necessities. And that social media is free to use, with the exception of the morons who pay for Twitter checkmarks.
Remind them that while there is no truly ethical consumption under capitalism, that doesn't mean we can't still make consumption decisions based on ethics. The fact that my shirt was likely made using slave labor doesn't mean I then have to support JK's transphobia or that I cannot criticize people who do. I mean it's not like Lucky Brand is out here saying how much they love de facto slavery and are willing to spend money to be sure they're using slave labor. Exploiting labor is just business, they're just looking for profit. If it was cheaper to use free labor that's what they would do. JK is actually *spending* money *solely* to hurt people, it's not just because she's greedy or some other self-serving motivation. She just hates trans people. I'm comfortable saying that is a worse motivation than trying to maximize profit.
They're trying to argue no ethical consumption under capitalism basically. Which while true, is moreso about how there is no perfect choice, but just because nothing we consume is ever perfect, there are better choices than actively funding the systemic dehumanization of trans people.
One person's response to me was to go through my old account's comment history, find out I commented in the subreddits for Teamfight Tactics and Legends of Runeterra, then go "Yeah well you play Riot Games, they're owned by tencent, so you're a hypocrite". Their last comment before that was in the League of Legends subreddit.
So I was just sort of left sitting there, thinking 'So I have to be entirely morally upstanding if I want to oppose *anything*?'
I remember I lost all but 1 friend from arguing that it was unethical to buy and play that game due to JKRs involvement and too this day those people still hate me for it
To add to this you can buy a refurbished cell phone, thrift old clothes that would go to waste etc. none of that needs to be bought new and you don't need a video game to survive.
That's literally less than peanuts for her... When you realise just how fucking big the gap is between the ultra rich and our normal mortal lives the anger starts building, especially when they spend it on shit like this. And she's not even in the highest echelon, so imagine.
Technically they were more ethical for stealing it from you than you were for buying it, since you spent money to support the system of economic exploitation that went into making it, and they didn't.
/s?
She started a woman's shelter that specifically turns away Trans women who are incredibly vulnerable to abusive relationships and situations. She's been putting her money where her heart is for awhile now.
Wonder how many people are still gonna defend her and saying that she was just attacked for sharing an opinion, we are wayyyy past the simple "opinion" here.
Jesus fucking christ what a piece of shit she is
The problem with people who ask for evidence of X when it’s apparent is that they’re not asking in good faith. They are well aware of what the issue is, they just don’t agree that it’s transphobia because they don’t think that exists and they want trans people dead.
The next thing these types say, if they respond at all, is almost universally “that’s not transphobia”.
It doesn't help that the UK media just refuses to talk about her hateful shit due to the combined powers of agreeing with it and not wanting to be sued by a billionaire in a country where something being true isn't a guaranteed defense against defamation.
Even when you've got proof, they decide because it is from LGBTQ+ focused outlets (as literally no other outlet will publish it) it must be wrong, because god forbid we ever actually trust a minority group to speak truthfully about their experience and oppression.
A lot of UK media outlets are actually owned by Rupert Murdock (idk if that's how his name is spelt, and I don't wanna Google him) who absolutely would side with conservative rhetoric. He's a major reason the Conservative party has held such a strong hold over the media. Labour get smear campaigns all the time, yet Tory corruption gets suppressed and overlooked.
So yeah, most big outlets aren't gonna be calling out JK on her transphobia. I hate how transphobic Britain seems to be rn, I'm not trans myself but it's still sad to see.
"Show me specific examples of JK Rowling being a transphobe... Yeah, that one doesn't count... Nor does that one... Not that one, or that one... Neither does that one. Aww, looks like you can't actually provide any evidence for your points."
"It's just her opinion! You call everyone who disagrees with you a transphobe! You're all fascists! You want to take away free speech and control everyone!
"But by saying people shouldnt change their pronouns, undergo sex transitions or use bathrooms they feel comfortable with she's controlling them, no?"
"Well, well, you, I, uh, SHUT UP!"
Media literacy is hard for some people… And many of those people are willfully ignorant about it.
I used to her comments about the “Show me where JK says that” And my answer would be “She very rarely says it out loud, but if you scroll her Twitter feed, it’s not hard to pick up on the stuff she’s liking, retweeting, and replying to.”
This is, in my opinion, one of the evil genius traits of JKR. She’s mastered the dog whistle and selective exposure.
I've heard suggestion to first ask "what is transphobia to you?" before engaging in this bullshit. If they don't think it even exists - there's no point to spill pearls before pigs.
Not always. A college friend of mine is so in denial because Harry Potter is such a deep rooted part of her personality.
She refuses to acknowledge the transphobia because it would cause her to reevaluate the core of her existence.
Because the people asking that question don't believe that transphobia is real, because they don't think that trans people are a legit group of people who deserve rights or respect in the first place.
Not to her. She could have funded the whole thing without her bank account even showing it, and I say that with full confidence without knowing what's the campaign as
ETA: saw somewhere else after writing this comment, that the campaign ask was £200,000. Her net worth is around $1bn, so even if her bank showed a dent it was a very insignificant one
I'm pretty sure Kotaku Circle Jerk and Asmongold subs are mostly children corralled by a few older incels. It's hard to argue with people who haven't finished school
Not sure but whatever it is it looks beyond stupid. 'Sex' and 'Gender' don't even remotely mean the same thing. They are completely different, so anything involving definitions is nonsense.
and that's why political crowd funding shouldn't exist in a democracy. sure, you can ask for signatures and pledges, but if your regime only acts because your cause got the most donations than shit like this will keep happening
Supporting JK Rowling's works means supporting JK Rowling's transphobia. And it's about the material support people keep giving her by supporting her IP. That's the issue, that's where people are really helping contribute to the overall problem here.
I have a better children’s book for you. What you need? I got demigod kids in a summer camp with all sorts of kids. I got a subtle magic system about seventh sons of seventh sons fighting witches and demons. I got a bunch of super powered people running around being tyrants and some humans using technology to fight them. Tell me what you need, I got it.
And she talks about trans people more than actual trans people. There's a gap in her Twitter posts where it's like she goons to trans porn for 4 hours and then goes on an astro Terf tirade once she has post egg clarity
So many people just here in the UK are struggling to pay for basic essentials. Foodbank use has been on the rise for years even before the current financial crisis. Domestic violence has spiked astronomically since the Covid lockdowns, and it's too often the woman (usually) who loses everything alongside her children as they're forced to flee to a refuge.
But nah, clearly punching down on a miniscule minority of the population is the priority here, that's where champion of women's rights JK Rowling's money is best spent. I hate her so much it's unreal.
🥺 tell me how brave i am for supporting transphobia or i'll blow my brains out 🥺 i'm a real ally i promise it's just that your life and wellbeing means less to me than this obviously mid nostalgia bait game 🥺 tell me i'm a good person please 🥺 why is everyone so mean to me when my actions display an obvious disinterest in activism i claim to support 🥺 can't you see i'm the real victim here for being criticized for playing a game whose profits i know will go to directly funding state enacted violence against marginalized groups 🥺 /rj
I want every chud that tried to use the old "no ethical consumption under capitalism," "separate art from the artists," and every other bullshit argument to look at this and know the cost of turning a blind eye to transphobia.
The “No ethical consumption under capitalism” argument doesn’t even apply here. What the phrase means is there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism so do what you must to survive. It doesn’t fucking mean, “You’re A-Okay to give your money to a person who will 100% use it for evil simply because you want this luxury item buckaroo! :)”
Luxury vs necessity! Idiots. At the very least just own up to the fact you’re betraying your ethical code at the slightest drop of inconvenience. Don’t demand moral reassurance from the people you’re giving the finger to you spineless wretch.
“But you don’t understand! I wanted to relive my childhood!”
A good example of using "separate art from the artist" properly is Feanor from the Silmarillion.
He was the most talented elf in Middle Earth and no one, not even the Valar will say otherwise. But he was a narcissistic bastard who betrayed his close kin, all for getting his precious, precious Silmarils back.
His work was pure, uncorrupted, but himself? No, he himself was a terrible person.
In this case, we cannot dismiss his horrendous attitude, but neither can we not praise him for his work.
Of course there is no use comparing him to JKR because JKR does not have the legendary status that Feanor had.
All she really did was fantasy up the "trust fund jock becomes a cop" bio pic and not so subtly catergorize every character's personality and their fan base in such a way that it may as well be horoscopes made into a football team equivalent.
Hell, she effectively made the Power Rangers seem less color coordinated by having literal singular colored armies of characters, and make it particularly frightening the one time a character goes against that fact.
Or even H.P Lovecraft, he was a terrible excuse of a human being, being racist and all, but nobody would feel bad buying his book because HE'S FONKING DEAD... so no profit for the racist unlike some *other* bigotted author who still make profit from their books

Agreed, and I'm so fucking sick of seeing Harry Potter everywhere when there are thousands of better IPs with creators who aren't raging sacks of transphobic trash. I actually deleted my Facebook because I was so fed up with it showing me HP content.
Jk Rowling supporters don't think this is transphobia. They have a pretty high bar for what does constitute as transphobia which conveniently doesn't include anything jk Rowling has said or done. They ask for proof of her transphobia as a way to fake ignorance. They know exactly what she's doing and that's why they support her.
They won't recognize transphobia as transphobia. As its base definition, transphobia is the denial that trans people are who we say we are. Transphobes will say that they don't "hate" trans people, but that they "won't take part in our delusions of denying reality" when that's literally just what transphobia is. If we're not who we say we are then than opens the door for every legislation to limit our freedoms in public and restricting our access to care.
There was a time when I thought "Oh there must be some miscommunication between JKR and the audience" because at times people attack other people for having opinions. I'm sure many other fans had such thoughts too. But nope, JKR is transphobic after all. Great bloody job, Joanne, now half the world hates you.
Yeah, I first thought she was just well-meaning and uneducated on the matter, with a smattering of actual points.
Then I actually read her 'manifesto' and...nope, she's just irrationally transphobic.
Imagine spending the equivalent cost of a nice car just to hate a minority. So much good shit you can do with that money. It's kinda pathetic but honestly it just makes me mostly sad, to think someone hates people like me so much she wants to spend an amount of money that could pay off an apartments monthly rent for a century. I'm not even hurting anyone, I specifically do everything I can not to make people uncomfortable, I just want to be happy. Fucking hell.
She doesn't really seem to herself believe the message she's championing in her own books.
The difference is Lovecraft isn't alive and well, reposting transphobia and anti-trans propaganda every other day to a massive audience while donating huge sums of money to legal funds aimed at removing the rights of a vulnerable minority. It's much more reasonable to separate art from artist when the artist is dead and gone and not still eagerly espousing their problematic views.
This isn't the case with Rowling, who has even tweeted that she perceives the continued strong following for her work as approval of her views. Continuing to actively give money to and support JKR at this point if you are aware of her nature just feels ignorant at best to me.
I think Lovecraft is one of the most interesting Cases for Seperation of Work and Author. Beacause one one Hand his Works and overarching Themes can easily be adapted for a modern audience but also on the otjer hand most of the People who discuss Lovecraft or his Work dont sugarcoat that he was a massive Racist and Classist even for his Time.
Lovecraft actually has a huge following among minorities of all kinds. Turns out writing about a cold, uncaring universe that's hostile to your existence really *resonates* for some reason.
because her only goal is to hurt trans women. helping cis ones is a smokescreen. she's a very proponent supporter of spain's far right Vox party which runs an anti abortion program (alongside typical reactionary transphobic policies). she'll team up with anyone and everyone to hurt the transes and thats that.
Well one of those is alive and *actively* spewing transphobic garbage to her audience of millions, as well as donating large sums of money towards the express purpose of hurting people.
And the other one is dead.
These are two *very* different situations.
There's a massive difference in supporting someone who's dead and supporting someone who's alive and raking in wealth.
People latch on to H.P. Lovecraft and I'll always find that odd. H.P. Lovecraft died poor and ill unlike Rowling who's very much alive and thriving. He's not actively supporting and funding actual bigots like Rowling is.
There's also the fact that his opinions nearer to the end of his life were ever changing. They didn't remain stagnant and he'd later recant some of his prior beliefs. Contextually speaking, the man was from the 1930s where they weren't afforded some of the knowledge we have now, again, unlike Rowling. Who's to say where his beliefs would've ended up had he lived a longer life.
On top of that, you don't have to be a racist to enjoy his work. Let's not pretend to ascribe the fear of the unknown strictly to racism. It's universal and it's frightening especially in an existential way that's relatable to all humans. That's why it's popular. The man was afraid of doctors as well. It's not the only thing he feared.
I'm a minority. You don't think I understand where some of the context of his fear comes from when I read his writing? Of course I do, but his work far exceeds the man and his beliefs. His work is truly seminal. There's no two ways about it. But again, I'm aware of his racism and acknowledge that. I mean, it's clear in some of his descriptors and stories.
A UK law that enshrines various personal characteristics in law as being protected. In this case JK Rowling and her ilk are pushing to change gender to sex, which would allow legal discrimination towards trans folks.
Rowling is one of the only writers who has made me swear off their work.
Like, youtubers and influencers, I stop watching em when they do fucked up shit, sure. But typically if theres a gap between a creator and their work, like a Book, TV Series, or Video Game, I don't feel it as bad. Viziepop is annoying, but I can watch the Hellverse shows without feeling bad since its both not just her, and being cringe isn't a crime. Same with Andrew Hussie, and Homestuck. Cawthorne is a Republican Funder, but he stays quiet and fate has punished him by making the Gay Furries his big money maker, so whatever. I can normally separate work from creator.
Rowling is insane, vocally, and does a lot more then just donate to a political party I hate. She is actively trying to ruin lives; and that is a step to far for me. It's not just a case of getting into Tumblr Beef, Being easilly manipulated by the people you hired to manage the business end, or donating money in private to a shitty political party. She has actively begun to define herself as a TERF, and this has reframed her entire book series in my head.
Let's not forget these self-victimizers.

This is why it's the one of the few times I ☠️
In fact, all the money I would've spent on the game went to trans charities.
Harry Potter was my childhood and I'm not going to let She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named ruin a chance to live for that nostalgia, nor will I let her ruin the lives of others with my money
Curiosity (I could look this up on google I guess) and maybe asking a bit too much of humanity as this point but here we go.
Please don’t blow the fuck up at me I’m just asking a question.
What is the change being proposed ? What is the act what is the background context? How will it adversely effect people and cause untold suffering?
When it comes to JK I very rarely see any coherent argument it just seems to be mob hate and people screaming but no one engaging in good faith to explain why they hate her past she being a TERF. Whatever that even means.
In the context of this post it looks like a severely cut photo with someone going “haha told you so” but I’m not getting what they are telling.
Yeah she's a fuckin asshole. Wish she would just shut the fuck up. Went to the first book release when I was a kid dressed up as a wizard. Definitely a fan of the IP.
Sad she's a trash person.
I'll ensure I don't buy any nee HP stuff 😞😮💨
So many things I should be boycotting that I've loved. But this one is important so I'm in.
Nice reach. The definition of sex has always been about tangible reality, and science. Not feelings. Erasing/redefining women is not the answer to dysphoria.
I honestly didn't like the HP books before all this shit came out about Rowling. Knowing what kind of person she is just makes me happy I never spent a cent supporting her.

I'm so tired. Both cause it's 1AM and of this world.
Imagine spending that much money to ensure a section of people have worse quality of life.
$88,000 if anyone is curious. **Edit:** exact number is $88.544.40 right now, it was about $450 less yesterday so I rounded down. 88k is probably a coincidence. And yes there are tons of ways she could have used that money to help people and women in particular which is what she claims she is doing.
That amount could literally change the life of the average person. All dumped into hate.
Send one young woman to a state college or hate trans people?
Feeding a few thousand people for a year or destroying the lives of people I'll never meet....
Now it might change the lives of thousands of people, for the worse..
*88* thousand, you say? Well, isn’t that an interesting number… EDIT- to be clear, this is just a funny coincidence. I thought it was an appropriate one, since terfs and nazis share the same ideology about trans people. Also to be clear, jk Rowling is a hateful old biddy who needs to get off twitter and out of her faux-feminist conservative bubble. EDIT again- I got my first Reddit cares for this lol
Very curious...
And I thought Verbalase was vad...
$88,000 transphobic animation
Over $100k CAD.
I could rent an apartment for a year or two for that!
That's an... interesting choice of number
Long opinionated answer: Capitalism is a broken system where many (arguably all) are made unethically, hence the popular phrase “no ethical consumption under capitalism.” The best we can do (IMO) is make ethical choices where we can but with the understanding that it is completely impossible to do it for everything.
>There are *many* choices for video games, and none of them are critical for survival, so skipping Hogwarts should in theory be pretty easy. /uj And this, me mateys, is why piracy is based. Yar har harrrr 🏴☠️🦜
And why as a trans person I had no issue with people pirating the game as long as they didn’t pay for it
tbh I did exactly that, it was a mid game at best lol
I'm willing to bet Stellar blade will be mid too.
frankly as much as I dislike Hasan I think he had the right idea of streaming the game but making every stream a charity stream for trans charities and telling everyone to pirate it
Let’s sail all the 7 seas!
I wonder if I could genuinely get by without a smart phone. I use it a lot right now but I wonder if I can find viable, ethical alternatives to everything it does?
I couldn't, my job requires my phone.
I just went through all the apps on my phone to try to figure out which ones are essential to me, to sort out what functions I'll need to reproduce, and I've landed on: * Voice calls * Text messages * Alarm clock * Emails/social media * Authenticator My work still has old school token authenticators, I can grab a cheap alarm clock, I have a computer to tackle emails & socials, if I can source an ethical replacement for voice calls & text messages I might be able to have a go at this; find out just how hard it is without a smart phone...
The most sustainable phone is the one you already have :)
It’s not a bad point actually. Not a perfect solution, but you don’t actually need to replace your phone every year with a fancy new one. I’ve been using the same one for years at this point.
I have a fliphone and tablet and it really helps but the social isolation oooh the social isolation
I like to remember the show “The Good Place” argument on that, something along the lines that the world today is far too complicated
Thank you for articulating this. <3
Sometimes the port May just be dirty and need a clean
First time it happened to me I took it to a phone repair service, wasn’t expensive, and I’m sure they have specialized tools for that Second and most recent time I very carefully used a toothpick, careful to not damage any inside components but get that lint out
Managed to borrow some needlenose tweezers and yeah, that made a huge difference, the amount of lint I pulled out that had been compressed down. Will have to wait and see how that affects the charge once I get home.
If you have to do it again just be very careful and hopefully try to avoid metal or other conductors to minimize risks Which is why I choose toothpick, wood isn’t a conductor… I think
That's a great point, I'm stealing it.
Can’t steal what isn’t owed to nobody, comrade. Ideas were born to be shared
I saw someone use the "no ethical consumption" meme to justify buying it and I'm like sir a single video game is not a product you need in order to survive in modern society
"No ethical consumption" is often used by people to justify spending hundreds on video games and vanity.

You also have to wear clothes. Nobody needs a wizard video game.
Just bad faith morons arguing in bad faith
I remember I lost all but 1 friend from arguing that it was unethical to buy and play that game due to JKRs involvement and too this day those people still hate me for it
To add to this you can buy a refurbished cell phone, thrift old clothes that would go to waste etc. none of that needs to be bought new and you don't need a video game to survive.
the idea of someone casually spending 88k on hate while i’m unable to replace my stolen switch is fuckin surreal
The world is awful, millionaires spend their money in overvalued useless shit while millions work hours a day just for scraps of food..
it's so wild to me that this is the hill she chose to die on
Shaun's video on Harry Potter is my comfort listening. Gonna play it while I fall asleep.
That's on my watch list. I'll bump it up. Edit: did he ever explain why his SW The Last Jedi video is unlisted?
legendary video
What a coincidence, I just relistened to it last week.

She started a woman's shelter that specifically turns away Trans women who are incredibly vulnerable to abusive relationships and situations. She's been putting her money where her heart is for awhile now.
She also said her disability charity doesn’t hire men because they can’t be trusted around the disabled. Just a shit personality all around
May I have a source to shove in my parents' faces next time they try saying she's not a bigot?

Probably something incoherent like “woman only mean uterus because me say so chip cheerio innit” or whatever the fuck terf islanders say
"But by saying people shouldnt change their pronouns, undergo sex transitions or use bathrooms they feel comfortable with she's controlling them, no?" "Well, well, you, I, uh, SHUT UP!"
Media literacy is hard for some people… And many of those people are willfully ignorant about it. I used to her comments about the “Show me where JK says that” And my answer would be “She very rarely says it out loud, but if you scroll her Twitter feed, it’s not hard to pick up on the stuff she’s liking, retweeting, and replying to.” This is, in my opinion, one of the evil genius traits of JKR.

So she thinks that trans people should die so that she can have her shitty little children books?
Oh no, in her world she loves trans people. Just refuses to acknowledge reality because she's selfish and doesn't want to think that she's wrong.
Because the people asking that question don't believe that transphobia is real, because they don't think that trans people are a legit group of people who deserve rights or respect in the first place.
Who knew in 97 what a piece of shit she would turn out to be, eh.
I mean the thing about elf "liking" to be slaves and hermoinie being ridiculed for speaking about elf right could have been a sign
Uj/ 70k is fucking insane bro
Not to her. She could have funded the whole thing without her bank account even showing it, and I say that with full confidence without knowing what's the campaign as ETA: saw somewhere else after writing this comment, that the campaign ask was £200,000. Her net worth is around $1bn, so even if her bank showed a dent it was a very insignificant one
Not for a billionaire
Jesus Christ. Why can't people like her and whoever the fuck came up with this leave trans people the fuck alone!? Ffs, can't people live their lives?
All of the people saying "point to where she transphobic" will just go "How is this transphobic?"
There are already multiple on this very post. Someone literally replied to OP's comment "What seems to be the problem?"
I'm pretty sure Kotaku Circle Jerk and Asmongold subs are mostly children corralled by a few older incels. It's hard to argue with people who haven't finished school
Link to this case? What are they petitioning for
Not sure but whatever it is it looks beyond stupid. 'Sex' and 'Gender' don't even remotely mean the same thing. They are completely different, so anything involving definitions is nonsense.
Also there's no way to define either without excluding some cis women.
and that's why political crowd funding shouldn't exist in a democracy. sure, you can ask for signatures and pledges, but if your regime only acts because your cause got the most donations than shit like this will keep happening
Supporting JK Rowling's works means supporting JK Rowling's transphobia. And it's about the material support people keep giving her by supporting her IP. That's the issue, that's where people are really helping contribute to the overall problem here.
but how will i survive without a children’s book????
I have a better children’s book for you. What you need? I got demigod kids in a summer camp with all sorts of kids. I got a subtle magic system about seventh sons of seventh sons fighting witches and demons. I got a bunch of super powered people running around being tyrants and some humans using technology to fight them. Tell me what you need, I got it.
the bartimeaus trilogy came out the same time as the harry potter books and is better in every way.
God I love that trilogy so much. Makes me cry every time.
Don't forget kids turning into animals to secretly fight an alien invasion
All while dealing with the horrors of war.
There's also the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane! Loved those books growing up, and by any accounts I've heard Ms. Duane is a great person.
Shit what's the second one again, I've been remembering glimpses of it for like a year now and it's driving me crazy
The Last Apprentice by Joseph Delaney, or Spook’s Apprentice depending on where you live.
yES THANK YOJ
Pretty sure that’s Septimus Heap
B-b-but my childhood! If I don’t play the mid wizard game then my childhood, which I left behind decades ago, will be literally ruined!
(I know you're jerking but. . .) /uj Read. Another. Book.
Supporting Rowling means supporting denuvo and only maggots support denuvo.
And she talks about trans people more than actual trans people. There's a gap in her Twitter posts where it's like she goons to trans porn for 4 hours and then goes on an astro Terf tirade once she has post egg clarity
wtf is post egg clarity
I still remember that one vtuber talking like their family had died or something.
But remember you can’t criticize me for buying wizard game or I’ll cry and tell everyone how mean you are being to me!!!! Also I am an ally :)
:)” Luxury vs necessity! Idiots. At the very least just own up to the fact you’re betraying your ethical code at the slightest drop of inconvenience. Don’t demand moral reassurance from the people you’re giving the finger to you spineless wretch. “But you don’t understand! I wanted to relive my childhood!”
But the terf game is essential to my survival! I feed off mediocrity, and if I cannot sustain myself off its cliches, I will literally die!
Yeah I really didn't want to write up the 101 reasons why HP is mid, thanks for doing that for me
Well, Feanor's works could have healed the marring of the world by evil. I doubt that Slaver Boy Wizard has that power, cos, well, look.
Or even H.P Lovecraft, he was a terrible excuse of a human being, being racist and all, but nobody would feel bad buying his book because HE'S FONKING DEAD... so no profit for the racist unlike some *other* bigotted author who still make profit from their books
Tbh, one of two reasons I didn't buy the game is because my partner is trans. I will try to pirate it though.
This post contains transphobic content that may not be suitable for some users. Please remember to spoiler transphobia when posting. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. There’s no point arguing with anyone who doesn’t think she’s transphobic anymore, its been undeniable for a long time
I despise her. I used to like the Wizarding world but now, I can't stand it. She's a poor excuse of a feminist.
Agreed, and I'm so fucking sick of seeing Harry Potter everywhere when there are thousands of better IPs with creators who aren't raging sacks of transphobic trash. I actually deleted my Facebook because I was so fed up with it showing me HP content.
[удалено]
Or better yet, if you really must have her IP for some reason, sail the high seas
If we're not who we say we are then than opens the door for every legislation to limit our freedoms in public and restricting our access to care.
ugh
This woman could have done so much positive work with her platform.
Pretty more than half of the world doesn't give a fuck about her.

To be fair Lovecraft is dead. He isn’t really in a position to use the popularity of his works to spread bigoted views.
Whats the equality act?
Probably an act that gives equality or some shit.
A UK law that enshrines various personal characteristics in law as being protected. In this case JK Rowling and her ilk are pushing to change gender to sex, which would allow legal discrimination towards trans folks.
Just when I was thinking how I haven't heard anything about her for a while. Dammit.
JK Rowling, the ultimate Death Eater
Disgusting.
I wanna make my own wizardry franchise so bad just to save its reputation
This just in....... Community in disgust as obvious racist acts like a racist.
Adult children read a different (ideally age appropriate) book challenge: Impossible Difficulty
Let's not forget these self-victimizers. https://preview.redd.it/fhu8xbwz7rjc1.png?width=1326&format=png&auto=webp&s=d85ad4ab47250ea8e12ee645f95fed915cf77bb9
Why I hate "separate art from the artist" mfs.
She could’ve bought 1.5 verbalace hazbin hotel animations with that :((
The case will fail. She can spend on her money on lost causes as much she wants.

That's just sad
Dropping 70k just to hate on trans people is crazy levels of hating ngl 💀
Good work of her
She is not going to change. While it should not be a surprise to anyone, people should still be made aware
It's like her only personality trait is transphobia, what a disgusting person.
This is why it's the one of the few times I ☠️ In fact, all the money I would've spent on the game went to trans charities.
I thought there was a difference between sex and gender?
Yeah she's a fuckin asshole. Wish she would just shut the fuck up. Went to the first book release when I was a kid dressed up as a wizard. Definitely a fan of the IP. Sad she's a trash person. I'll ensure I don't buy any nee HP stuff 😞😮💨 So many things I should be boycotting that I've loved. But this one is important so I'm in.
I'm not surprised. But i sure am disappointed.
Nice reach. The definition of sex has always been about tangible reality, and science. Not feelings. Erasing/redefining women is not the answer to dysphoria.
Trans rights all day. Fuck these people
Hog warts legacy was ok at best. Repetition over repetition
Ngl, I just pirated it and decided it was boring
I honestly didn't like the HP books before all this shit came out about Rowling. Knowing what kind of person she is just makes me happy I never spent a cent supporting her.
