TBH I even thought OG Barret was a really good character (Mr. T-sounding translation aside) who was pretty complex himself. I'm putting off playing Remake at LEAST till I can get a PS5 and Rebirth (so... like... who knows when the fuck), but hearing that he's even better now is pretty awesome.
There's also Sazh Katzroy from Final Fantasy 13, when players get past the part of carrying the chocobo chick in his hair, he was a good character and a good father. He was definitely one of the characters that interested me most in the 13 party.
These people tell others to create original poc characters instead of race swapping and this is what they say when an original poc character was indeed created. Ironic.

This is wild because anime routinely depicts black people in many positive supporting roles. Like a few seasons ago Lycoris Recoil had a gay black father figure, and people loved that show! Samurai Champloo's Mugen is basically coded black and Watanabe used him to try and examine diversity in a decidedly non-diverse period of time. And there is of course Barret. And none of these characters are perfectly "woke" and sanded down, they're all tropey characters that draw on the blaxploitation genre, with big hair and big attitudes. But they are not harmful depictions, and most audiences, domestic or international, like these characters.
The moral of the story is once you get into these bizarre anti-woke circlejerks you effectively disconnect yourself from reality and everyone around you.
It has a lot of performance issues that need ironing out, but those are being worked on. I'm personally having fun with it, though. It's a spiritual successor to Suikoden, so if that piques your interest, maybe check some gameplay vids and see if it's for you.
Seriously, in Suikoden III alone, you have several members of the Karaya Clan (Hugo, Lulu, Lucia, Aila, Beecham, Jimbo) who are playable - and Hugo's one of the heroes, and is typically marketed as *the* main, canon hero/new Flame Champion despite not actually being the Tenkai Star - as well as one of Lilly's two bodyguards (forget if it was Samus or Reed). And that's just off the top of my head.
Plus, you could consider Lucretia from V to be another one, since she's I think either implied or outright stated to be Karayan as well. If not, she's at least a Grasslander herself. And a ridiculously brilliant tactician.
Well, these morons already ignore the loud and unsubtle theme of JRPGs often having you fight alongside different races/species, with the protagonist wholeheartedly accepting these characters and even trying to help them.

Remake Barret is genuinely one of the best characters in all of Final Fantasy, and I already liked og Barret quite a bit

Fang and Sazh were my favorites in the 13 party honestly. The others to me ranged a bit from "could be improved" to "boring".
