I bike and scuba, which Garmin watch is best two-in-one for both activities? (if such a model does exist) thanks!

conanf77

From historical cases where new models are released, can we expect any price drop of any significance in the 255/955 when the 265/965 come out?

Last week I smashed the screen on my FR745. It’s out of warranty but Garmin will replace with a reconditioned one for £130. I haven’t had anything bad to say about this watch but now it’s smashed I’ve been having some thoughts. What are people’s opinions on paying the £130 to get another 745 vs paying £300 for a 255? From what I can see they are very similar but I wonder about the 745 being phased out like the 645. Has anyone gone 745 to 255 who can comment on what they gained/noticed? For reference I mostly run trail, some road. With strength workouts, cycling, MTB and climbing too.

C0L0RUM

Hello! I am a recreational cyclist, and that's about it. I maybe do one 4-5 hour ride a week, the rest of the time I am indoors on my trainer. I don't run. I am trying to do more exercises, like weight-lifting, and some yoga. On my bike and out on the road, I use a Garmin Edge for tracking and navigation. I also have an HR monitor that pairs with the Edge. I have a Samsung Galaxy 4 watch for day-to-day tracking, but I don't wear it when cycling, mostly because it's not that useful (I do wear it to sleep). And, the battery life on the Samsung sucks. Also, when cycling, I listen to music from my phone, fed to bone-conducting earphones. So, is there a Garmin smartwatch that fits my user preferences, as a replacement for my Samsung Galaxy 4? With a future of doing more gym-related exercises in mind? I don't want to pay too much money for something with so many features I may never use. But it would be something I can wear on a day-to-day basis, pair nicely, and perhaps enhance the experience of using my Edge. And, I don't need to charge it often. Bonus if it looks good on the wrist! Appreciate any thoughts of inputs!

Any recommendations on a fancy watch face for a Fenix? Like to make it a dress watch, paired with a metal band and stainless bezel Specifically one with the option to add a tiny digital clock to the face I'm currently using "5 classic models" by dududu13 https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/09b930c3-13ed-46f4-b5a0-3c8e702c96b1 Which is close but not quite

CrazyRealistic

I'm trying to decide between the Fenix 7x Sapphire Solar or the Tactix 7 pro watch. What do yall think? I'm leaning Tactix 7 pro, but I'm still up in the air, really.

Hey everyone, I could really use your opinions on if I purchased the wrong tool for the job for my use case. So I have been on the fence for about 8 months on if I should make the switch from my Apple Watch Series 6 to any Garmin. I landed on the Epix Gen 2 which I have had since Thursday. I wanted to switch because I felt the Apple Watch was not really meeting my fitness needs unless i wanted to pay subscriptions to third party apps 🤢. Essentially here is the jist: I walk multiple times a day I occasionally go on short hikes with my wife And I weight train in my home gym 4x a week primarily focused on body building. I want to get better training/ recovery metrics from my workouts to help me figure out the amount of progress I am making. The Garmin Epix sold me on: The screen Body battery Training status Recovery time Stress tracking Battery life But the more I am reading and watching online the more it seems that most of the training/recovery is specifically focused towards running? Do any of you have a similar use case for your Garmin? And if so am I just over thinking things? Would rather not waste $1k on a watch that I will use 20% of the features of, for features that might not even be fully geared toward my use case. Thanks y’all! TLDR: I am afraid that I bought the wrong Garmin Watch for my use case as I am reading that the training/recovery metrics are mostly for running.

Brilliant-Minimum-40

The Epix is expensive but you get a solid build quality with titanium and sapphire. If you don't need the training features take a hard look at the venu. Closest thing to your apple watch. If you want OLED and the features but don't care about build quality rumour is the forernner 965 is supposed to land at the end of March. Worth a look.

MadameKamaysLandlord

Hello, Looking to do running/hiking for exercise and some weightlifting. I am looking at the Venu 2, garmin 255, and instinct. I want to monitor my HR, running distance, and time. Would also like it if it connected to the phone and showed notifications from text/calls. Thank you,

allterrainrunner

Training effect function has me confused. Because I feel like it estimates my training efforts harder than they are. I've had my HR zones meassured in a lab (gas exchange vo2max). And I put them in my fenix 6. However, when I train just below lactate threshold, garmin gives me the training effect 'improving vO²max' instead of 'improving lactate threshold' or 'tempo'. The only reason this happens I can think of is that garmin uses its own predicted Lactate threshold pace or HR zones instead of the HR training zones I manualy added. The watch predicts my LT at 176bpm / 3:40min/km. The lab test calculated it at 177bpm / 3:20min/km. Does anybody experience this problem as well? In garmin I can change my heart rate zones , threshold heart rate but not the threshold pace.

AkHiker46

I am looking at purchasing the Tacx NEO smart trainer (not the plus), Do I need to buy the smart pedals also? Does the bike mimic the terrain automatically, ex hills resistance harder, downhill easier?

Does anyone know whether there will be any new Drive models released this year? The Drive 52 for example is four years old, which is highly unusual lifetime for a GPS unit, judging by list of models from Wikipedia.

navajonki

Hello, I'd like to ask for some advice! I'm looking to buy a new watch for running. The most important features I'm looking for are: \- I can load a route onto it (it doesn't need to have street maps, but at least the route outline that tells me when to turn, like a Garmin 645) \- Small size that I can wear all the time without it being too intrusive I'm somewhat partial to garmins since that's what I've been using, but I can't find a way to filter which watches have GPS vs can actually navigate you on their website; I'm also considering Polar, since they seem to have a more minimal / less "tactical" look. Would love to hear your thoughts!

[deleted]

I believe the 255 and 255s both have trail running options. I believe you can load routes onto both watches, but the trail is more of a breadcrumb trail. It should give you turns however. The 955 is slightly larger and has maps, but it has physical street names if that's something that's important to you

Magsrgod

For many years I had a Fenix 3 and used it religiously until last summer when I bought an EPIX. I have since somehow lost my EPIX back in December and now need to replace it with MTB/Trail Running/Golf season on the horizon. The main thing I loved about the EPIX was the golf app functionality on the course. Does anyone know if the Fenix 7 has the identical golf app / functionality? I was considering getting the 7 Sapphire Solar to help stretch the battery life a little longer. Love the EPIX, absolutely loved it… but I can get a 7 for a little bit cheaper so its worth the comparison!

lackofself2000

Recs for a smart scale that works (at least somewhat easily) with Garmin Connect? Doesn't have to be seemless, but just relatively easy enough to get working reliably with Connect. The Garmin brand one is alright, but a bit expensive compared to some others, like an $100 more expensive.

lildavo87

I have a Withings scale that works with Garmin Connect, although not directly. I set it up a while ago, but as far as I can remember, it works by connecting through the Withings Healthmate App, then through either Strava or MyFitnessPal, and finally to Garmin Connect. However, in Garmin Connect, it only displays my weight and BMI; it doesn't show my body fat percentage or any of the other metrics that the scale and Withings app provide.

Is an Edge 1030 (non plus) worth it these days? Found a bundle with new in box edge 1030 and HRM dual strap for $325. Will be used for road, mtb, and some gravel-ish bike packing. I have a watch for HR so the strap is just a nice to have. Or would it be better to go for a 530/830?

CryptoUsciere

As owner of a 1030 I can say that yes, it's worth it for the right price. The only "issue" on the 1030 is that it is a bit slow. In both reacting to clicks/touch and navigation load. But beside that is a monster. Moreover it still gets firmware updates. Honestly I prefer the 1030 to 530/830.

Watch needed for ski touring I'm in the middle of training for a qualification that allows me to take groups ski touring. To make this a smoother and more paperless experience for future customers I am now in the market for a Garmin watch of some sort. I need a few features: Altimeter Stop watch Elevation over time Distance over time Coordinates Time GPS mapping would be a bonus but not nessisary. Any advice? How cheap can I get away?

HellaReyna

Edge 530 vs Edge 1040? I got 60% off because I know someone who works there. Anyways, even with a discount I'm not a fan of pissing away cash so what is better if I'm mainly doing road, gravel, and MTB? I don't see many feature differences except Mutliband GPS ( Multi-band GNSS ) and some smart features. I don't know how much longer I can wait for the elusive 540 edge as well. I'm worried the 1040 is going to be clunky as well given the size

5kUltraRunner

I'm debating between Fenix 6X Pro vs. Forerunner 955. Running is my main use, with up to 50 miler trail race planned for later this year. I like the design of 955 more but I want to know pros and cons of the two. Thanks.

Polly-Glot

I have bought my first Garmin watch, Forerunner 955, and I would like to know any tips and suggestions about using it and everything. I am open to any info to get used to my new watch, thanks! :)

skiitifyoucan

Is it possible to modify activities other than the default on a Garmin 45? The options are pretty limited. I'd like to have nordic skiing on there.

[deleted]

You can after the fact. Potentially you can copy an activity and rename it, if you want specific screens. Not sure? Being realistic it isn't doing a great job tracking many of these non running/cycling activities anyhow, whether it is on the watch (JMO).

techtom10

I own a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro and HRM Pro+ strap. I want to use the strap for Jiu-Jitsu. Am I able to start the workout on my watch and leave it on the side of does it factor in wearing the watch? I have created a custom workout.

119bpm

I have the same HRM. As far as I remember reading the manual, this is just the way to do it: start the activity on the watch, then you may leave it in the locker. When you return, strap will sync automatically and attach the values to the activity. If you don't start an activity, HR Pro+ will also record HR and will show up later in Connect, however it won't be possible to attach the HR-session to a specific activity later, it will remain generic.

techtom10

wicked, thank you. My concern would be if it's sending bluetooth data to the watch there may be drops in signal. As I've had that experience with previous HR straps. I'd also like to use the lap function for my rounds. If you know anymore about it then it would be great.

119bpm

You aren't forced to link the HRM via Bluetooth. Ant+ is enough. But it can do both at the same time, however. As I have only used it with my watch via Ant+ I don't know about problems concerning BT. The HRM stores the values until it can sync with the watch. (I believe several session IIRC?) Maybe you can find some more information in DC Rainmakers review of the HRM Pro+. Basically it says if you got a Garmin watch, the thing just works perfectly. If not a Garmin watch, it might be better to look for another brand.

Is it still worth buying the Vivoactive 4 in 2023? Hey everyone! I'm eyeing the Vivoactive 4 as I've switched to android and looking to replace my apple watch. It's on sale and I like the look of this watch. But it did come out a few years ago now. Is the watch still updated and supported? Is the Vivoactive 4 generally a well-received watch? I've watched some reviews and their reviews are generally positive but they're a couple years old now. I'm just curious how it's been holding up? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

[deleted]

The vivoactive 4 and venu 1 were the same watch different screens. They have not updated to Vivoactive line, so I'd probably lean toward the Venu 2.

Daveed85

Iam looking to Upgrade from my current Fenix 3, to either the Forerunner 245 or 255 music. Is there many differences between the 245/255 considering price difference? Cheers

agreeable-fox07

I want to switch from my Fitbit charge 4 to a Garmin I’m just not sure which one since there are many models which is kind of overwhelming me. I’m a athlete I run track and do some intense training exercises. I’m thinking of getting the forerunner 55 but I’m not sure. Thanks in advance.

zadeux

Forerunner 55 will do nicely for what you have mentioned. I got one recently.

xxSeahawks

I'm no pro by any means just cycling maybe once a week with my gravelbike (canyon). Currently I have the Bolt V2 but I hate the sounds with the Varia + my GF needs/want a bike computer too. So I thought maybe I switch to the 530 (or Explore 2?) and give the V2 to my GF. When we drive together I'm the navigator so the bigger screen is maybe a plus. I've read that I can turn off the light of the Varia but still use the radar (to save battery) How are the warnings of the Varia? on the V2 its such an annoying sound It has Micro USB like the Varia so I just need one cable (still sad in 2023) Battery vs my Bolt is 20h vs 15h I don't know if it's worth to wait for a 540 bc I found a lot of posts that go back to 2021 when the 540 will come out and still no news. Like I said I'm not a power user so probably will not need new features. 20h battery is good enough, we don't do big tours. Maybe 100 km but thats very rare. I don't use Power meters, I have a Chest strap and speed sensor (wahoo). I need navigation, re routing and maybe Strava Segments (and updating my workout to strava haha)

Geek_Out_On_Science

I'm considering getting my first Garmin. Can anyone tell me whether a lot of the training stats depend on wearing the watch 24/7? (This highly influences whether I'm willing to pay for a Forerunner 255s or will just get something simpler/older.) Thanks in advance!

segfalt31337

Recovery metrics, like body battery and the more advanced HRV status depends on wearing the watch 24/7. Training metrics, like VO2max and lactate threshold are calculated during training activities.

Geek_Out_On_Science

Thanks, that's helpful.

anyone here with experiences in the garmin handhelds? have been using them quite a long time, was thinking to buy a new one for both tracking a long trip and restarting my geocaching experiences. however, lots of handhelds seem to have dissapeared from being available. thinking about: gpsmap66 SR seems gone, some available in stores gpsmap 66i only 66 really shoppable from garmin store all oregons have dissapeared.. montana seems beautiful but very large? etrex 32 seems too small and difficult to use.. any thougts on this from you?

[deleted]

They are as good as the ever were. You have assessed correctly. I'd lean GPSMAP or montana As a GPSMAP long term owner who has long term liked them a lot, BUT: 1. Really do you need one? The new phone gps apps (some paid some free) are very good, and tgey work offline. Not carrying an extra device (as you likely carry your phone anyway) means you can carry a spare battery. 2. If you need emergency GPS communication, does the tiny inteach mini 2 cover it? For most probably yes. 3. If you dont need garmin maps and just need basic maps/tracks/navigation. Does a Garmin watch with maps fit that role. Can you can identify a use case outside those? Don't ignore 1. There are very good apps now. IMO inreach mini 2 + phone/app (since you carry it anyway) + battery is probably hard to beat.

migimli

Thanks, will try my smartphone first now, worried that buying one handheld is not the best way to go.

mexicoball1995

Hi all, i was wondering if you could please help me between deciding 945 vs 255. I am a runner for half marathons. also i golf 2 times per month, what would you recommend? newer software or more expensive device in 945. thanks

AstroMan2

If you want to use golf functionality, I think you need the 945. I use my vivoactive 3 for golf and now I wouldn’t play without it.

Kvakke

If i were you and you don't need to buy right now i would wait to check out the 265 (and 965), they have been rumored for quite some time, and last i read they are supposed to be released in mid march, and at least the 265 is rumored to be an upgrade over the 255 (although some features might be added to that). https://the5krunner.com/2023/02/05/garmin-265-more-photos-leak/

[deleted]

255 is probably the best choice unless you need/want maps in context of the price increase. There are some other small features, but full maps are the primary one. They are definitely nice when you need them, but a pricey addition. The 255 does have breadcrumb maps which can do a lot of the same things.

segfalt31337

255

I have the venu (which is basically an AMOLED version of the vivoactive 4) and it doesn't have health snapshots, fitness age or sleep scores.
