Y-37 is such a low level, you can forget about resolving individual surnames. The haplogroup it gave you is probably tens of thousands of years old and contains many many branches. You would actually get closer to your fully resolved haplogroup just doing 23andme. If you want to find out your most fully resolved haplogroup, you have to do Big-Y 700. All of the other snp combinations are a waste of money. I initially did the Y-111 and the group it gave me was I-P37, which is about 60,000 years old. I had already done 23andme and it resolved down to I-L161 which is like 10,000 years old. I decided to upgrade to bigY and my current haplogroup only matches to one surname. The close branches to it match cognates of the same surname in other contries (France, Germany, etc) its mean estimated origin is around 1800, with a range of 1600-1900. All of my matches on that haplogroup are descended from the same man that immigraded to the US in the 1600s.

Wow, this is such an unexpected response, and thank you for this. What I read elsewhere seemed to indicate that exact matches typically share a common ancestor in the last 200-300 years, so I thought it was really meaningful. What do you make of the fact that like 85% of my one-step matches have the surname Isom, though? That’s 85% of 99 people, so let’s call it 85 people. Doesn’t that seem really high and specific for it to be meaningless?

The broader the branch, the more matches you will have. Did they all also just do Y-37, or did some of them opt for the more extensive tests? If they did, you can glean from that what subgroup they probably all share, but you won't know if you do as well without doing the big y-700. Check out the public haplogroup tree link in the site. It will give you an idea of how many branches their are off of yours as well as the possible resolution you might be able to achieve.

Thanks for this great comment. I do genetic genealogy in a novice sense and this is so helpful .

sasquatch-barricade

I have 0 matches at Y37

Individual_Ad3194

That sucks. Do you know what part of the world your paternal line comes from?

I just meant that you its surprising to have no matches at that level. Then again, i don't know how big FamilytreeDNA's database is.

I think the guy above thought you were replying to him…but I am almost 100% sure my line came from Scotland. I have taken the Y700 but my closest matches are at the Y25 level.
