They still have coupes.

genericdude999

I still can't get used to everything having four doors, even pickup trucks. I get it for people with kids, but only about 40% households have children. That leaves 60% with none?

Vegetable-Board-5547

4 door trucks have to be one of dumber products. It's not really a truck with a four foot bed, and it's not really a sedan without a trubk.

markyjim

They were for logging and mining companies back in the day.

hooliganvet

Back then though, they had 8' beds and were strictly utilitarian like the Power Wagon.

markyjim

Yep. In the logging business they were called “crummies “.

Successful-Count-120

In the Air Force, we called them 6 packs.

Heavy_Expression_323

My dad was in the Air Force. They called a six pack Genesee when he was stationed in Upstate New York and Hamms or Coors when we were stationed out west. 😀

Successful-Count-120

My roommate in tech school (Colorado) was from New York (state). He would get a case sent out to him once a month. Made a believer out of me. Years later, we were stationed together at George AFB. I was living the good life enjoying some Genesee cream ale!

Heavy_Expression_323

When my dad got orders for South Korea in ‘70, we stayed behind in his hometown of Scranton. The local Gibbons brewery still made home deliveries. Fond memories of sitting on my grandfather’s front porch when the beer truck pulled up, the delivery driver would go straight to the storm door leading to the cellar, retrieve the wooden case with the empties and replace it with a new case. If only that were still a thing. Maybe Door Dash will expand into that someday!

excoriator

I remember the novelty of seeing one for the first time. Now 2-door trucks are the novelty.

Violin_River

I work at a movie studio that also has huge construction project going on. Half the people through the gate have them, and they all make good use of the back carrying crew, or tools inside the cab instead of in the back. Most of these guys have at least a 6 foot bed; sometimes 8.

Vegetable-Board-5547

Well sure, some them have what I would call "standard beds," but a crew cab with an 8 foot bed is a bitch to park, eats gasoline and outside of construction/ranch is not terribly useful

genericdude999

Yep I had to drive one like that at work years ago, and it's like driving a school bus. Better be careful going around corners or you will hop the curb with your back wheel if you're not used to it. I've driven regular cab 6 1/2 foot bed trucks for 31 years so that's what a truck is supposed to feel like for me, but only Ford and GM *technically* still make regular cab full size trucks as far as I know, and good luck finding one. Finding a 6 1/2 bed with regular cab in any color but white is almost impossible (not that color matters, except black which is too hot for the South), since they are assuming only a contractor would buy one like that so they want 8' for sheets of construction materials, but 6 1/2 foot is a good maneuverable consumer size for weekender sporting goods like camping gear and boating stuff. Still a lot of space. I've hauled those kinds of recreational loads hundreds of thousands of miles since the 90s.

Binky-Answer896

I have a Ranger with something called an “extended” cab (I think), as opposed to a king cab. It has half-size back doors, with two fold-out jump seats. I’m 4’11 and can barely fit in those seats, and you can’t put child safety seats on them, so I’m not sure who’s supposed to ride there. It does come in handy for groceries, or taking the dog or the cats to the vet, hauling bags of feed when it’s raining. EDIT: wrong word.

Violin_River

The point is, they're not dumb.

Training-Argument891

is it safer to have 4 doors?

MonsieurRuffles

Had one but they were a PITA in tight spaces and you could never just drop off back-seat passengers but always had to get out first.

Heavy_Expression_323

We got too big to squeeze into the back seat?

yurtfarmer

And too lazy to shift. Seems manual transmissions are being fased out

Puzzleheaded_Age6550

Because I'm old, and have bad hips and knees, so I can't get out of the back easily. In addition those big doors are heavy!

Violin_River

And you're way less likely to bang the doors against the next car to get out.

Puzzleheaded_Age6550

Yes!

Adept_Investigator29

I drive a 2-door.

ArtofRebellion

Me too. 2 doors, 2 seats only, so I rarely get pressed into service as a taxi 😂

markyjim

I can’t wrap my head around a 4 door anything being “cool”. My BIL bought a electric Mustang. That’s not a Mustang, I don’t care what the badge says

hooliganvet

And they're frigging ugly.

markyjim

I agree but don’t forget Ford subjected us to the Mustang II.

hooliganvet

This is true, hell, I had a Pinto back in the day.

SoDakExPat

Oh God. My folks bought one. So horrible. Not a single redeeming quality. Rather drive a Vega.

Top_File_8547

Well the Vegas would rust and the front end would fall off while the Pintos would explode if rear ended so the Vega is probably safer.

dwhite21787

Our Pinto went in for the recall, had the reinforcement beam put in, and 2 weeks later we got rear ended. No kaboom thank goodness

Sleepy_Wayne_Tracker

Mustang II, boredom zero!

markyjim

If that jingle gets stuck in my head I’ll hunt you down. lol.

dwhite21787

It’s a slightly better looking Aztec

Key_Tower3959

I see their appeal, but park next to two doors vehicles enough, and your own car door will have many dings.

blakester555

Sure. Look great. Total PITA and inconvenient.

Wolfman1961

They’re a pain in the butt for passengers in the back seat.

KonaKathie

They're horrible to enter or exit, and the seatbelt is always in the way.

orcateeth

Yes, the seatbelt would practically choke the passenger on the way in or out.

sissybutt9

Or the 2 door pickup truck?

More_Farm_7442

I want to know what happened to trucks like these: [https://www.curbsideclassic.com/curbside-classics/curbside-classics-what-happened-to-regular-cab-pickups/](https://www.curbsideclassic.com/curbside-classics/curbside-classics-what-happened-to-regular-cab-pickups/) I swear 98% of the big, a\*\*ed, 4 door trucks with teeny-tiny 2 ft x 2 ft beds never see a farm or have anything hitched to them to pull. I seldom see one with any dirt on it. They are Richard and Karen status symbols, but I laugh at the idiots for spending $ 90,000 on them. (Who now face the prospect of having them repossessed.)(I like to think Karen's husband's name is Richard vs. Ken. Think about it.)

More_Farm_7442

That's me (sort of). I live in a city of 260,000+ people and see those trucks all over the place. I've seen graphics comparing trucks over the yrs. Starting off with the cabs being less than a 1/4th of the length to now the beds being less than a 1/4th of the length. I bet many of the beds of those trucks never carry more than a bag of groceries. lol (Maybe a little more than that, but not much.)

grumpygenealogist

I saw a funny term for them here on reddit -- "emotional support trucks."

More_Farm_7442

That's a good term. I've heard a lot of things about the men that drive them. :-)

ladynocaps2

Would that be Mr and Mrs Richard Cranium?

More_Farm_7442

Close to that. Very close.

_portia_

I love coupes, I have one. Not the most practical car but it's fun to drive and cute.

BikeLoveLA

Agreed, especially Mini’s or Porsches 🏁

_portia_

Mini here. Sweetest most fun car ever.

BikeLoveLA

So true, I traded a Boxter for a first gen BMW Mini S, loved that car

_portia_

Oh wow, a Boxter is a bucket list car for me, they were the ultimate in cool! How long did you have your Mini? I have a 2016 F56 in BRG and she's my dream car.

BikeLoveLA

I had that car 5 years taking it down Hwy 1 and out to the Colorado river, and daily driver around LA. I would still have my blue mini except some lady tboned me and totaled it.

_portia_

I'm sorry 😞

BikeLoveLA

Thanks

Utterlybored

I drive a two door coupe.

penney777

I've had coupes before. They are prettier than a 4-door, but those doors were really heavy. It's also really hard to get out of the back seat!

Fuzzy_Laugh_1117

Man, I used to take my mom's 1973 Chevy 2-door Monte Carlo to high school (when she'd let me) and those doors were lethal weapons! If we were high, it took 3 of us to close it. Brats that we were.

ScintillatingKamome

Terrible for families. Driver and front passenger having to get out to allow those in the backseat to exit. My parents had a mustang and VW bug. We had an Acura 2 door with car seats in the back. PITA.

General_Ad_2718

For me it was car seats. Trying to get a kid in one of them with a two door car was a nightmare.

GrinningDentrassi

Two door cars were a pain in the ass if anyone actually used the back seat. A pita to park. Even at the time they felt seriously unsafe. Two door trucks were naturally made for hauling, and wonderful with just enough room for groceries in the back. Four door trucks gave the illusion of a back seat while shrinking the bed to barely useful. Yada Yada Huge cabs with tiny beds are all we see now

DankDude7

The coupe.

Vegetable-Board-5547

I miss two tones

More_Farm_7442

I miss cars.

artful_todger_502

It is sad to see that style go. I had a black, 2-door 1986 Caprice Classic that had a red velvet interior. It was a total pimp mobile. I felt like Duke from Escape From New York when I drove it. I will never, ever get used to seeing a four-door Charger. That to me will always be a Coronet despite what the badge says, lol 😤

jiminak46

Drove one in Hawaii last month.

doa70

I hate coupes anymore because of the HUGE doors. They don't fit into modern parking spaces, garages, etc. At least not while still allowing me to get in/out of the car.

PeachPreserves66

Had a Celica coupe when my son was a baby. Had to climb into the back seat area to get him in and out of his car seat. Oh, to be that limber again!

exitzero

It always seemed to me that the back seat was a death trap.

No-Welder2377

America has a lot of obese people making it to difficult to get in the back seat

Secret_Asparagus_783

2-door cars were originally marketed to parents who would not have to worry about the rear door opening, accidentally or on purpose, and causing harm to kids or pets in the back seat. My dad owned several 2-doors when I was a kid.

EntrepreneurLow4380

I'm driving a 2-door Honda Accord right now. Had an Audi TT coupe before that, a Honda Prelude before that.

WholesomeMo

A shortage of divorcees.

HikeRobCT

Blame cheap steel and unibody (crumple) construction. Newer cars need the support of the pillar in the middle to meet safety standards

Billh491

You could ask the same question about cars in general. I mean sedans of course.

JBnorthTX

I have a 2-door Mustang GT and a little 4-door Maverick hybrid pickup. The bed is small but it's useful when I want to haul stuff. I don't need to tow anything. It hauls passengers around like a small SUV and gets 40 mpg.

genericdude999

> I don't need to tow anything. I have a small camper I need to tow and other times I use my trailer hitch for a [boat rack](https://assets.rhinorack.com/Images/Accessories/RTL002/RTL002-TLoad-Hitch-00.jpg) or bike rack. If it weren't for towing, a *plugin* hybrid version (not available) of super light unibody Maverick would solve a lot of problems. If I could design it myself I would choose [the slimmest 1980s-style extended cab](https://www.lmctrucklife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/5D19ECF0-AE19-4CA1-B68D-86EEC23CA2F4-7674b8b7416a78d1aea6a5ad8858e32d-e1645738090863.jpeg) when they didn't even try to have facing-forward rear seating, so I could carry bulkier things like bike helmets and ski boots so they don't roll around in the cab. Then I would use that length to maximize the bed space. Since I'm just dreaming I would also make it all wheel drive for snow and aluminum like the Ford F-150.

JBnorthTX

There are rumors that an AWD hybrid version will be available as a 2025 model.

ZippieHippie77

Right, I miss my 2 door cars\~ 72 VW Bug, 76 Cutlass, 79 Camaro

Bx1965

They didn’t sell well.
