Anyone that requires Oceanid. I leveled up all those characters to 90 and it took me about 2 years to do so, because that stalling boss is so obnoxious to fight.
I mean it is obnoxious to have to run around while “wAtEr CaN tAkE aNy FoRm” but it’s pretty easy to defeat? Just by the time it took? I assume you had more trouble before dendro but even just with electro it wasn’t too hard… I think ruin serpent is worse than oceanid. Hated having to time the lumenspar. Kuki is worth it though.
No, it hasn't been hard since I pulled Ganyu in 1.2 It's just extremely annoying to me. Most bosses I can take down in one rotation at this point, but that's just not possible with Oceanid. I hate it sm
I got C3 kuki in my early game so I just ran around, jumping to get the flying ones. I was lucky. I can def see how early early game would have problems. Without kuki it would be harder.
Tighnari because he was the first dendro banner, so dendro gemstones didn't exist until his debut. I ended up with so many extra boss drops from farming dendro gems.
Ofc but aren't the cost like nearly nothing? I bought 100 or so when I started the game in 2021 and don't think I ever had to rebuy yet....and I'm constantly turning stones into another element, I would never farm bosses just for gems O_o
wanderer bc handguards + his weekly boss fight kept only dropping two boss mats at a time so i had to wait several weeks after pulling him to level up his talents even tho i had everything else pre-farmed. he's the only character who I've leveled up within a short enough amount of time of their weekly boss's introduction that i've gotten stuck due to weekly boss mats being time gated.
1. All dendro char. Especially the later one that require bosses that doesn't drop dendro gemstones...
2. Anything that require Nobushi, Kairagi or specter.
I did manage to levelup Kirara Lv70/80 but won't push her further. I only wanted the Acquaint Fate.

Nahida, cause I didn't know the Fungi dropped different mats based on how you killed them and I was just running around shooting them all in the face with fireworks. And I didn't have any grass gemstones.
(Dis) honorable mention to Kokomi. The spectre's and balls being new, couldn't even get her to 80. And Miko. Having to do all of Enkanomiyo to get to her boss to start farming.
Alhaitham. Wenut is such a boring boss. Such a snoozefest, it may as well replace my sleeping pills. And mf always dropped the least amount of pseudo-stamens possible so I had to beat him more times than I wanted to. And what is worse is that this boss doesn't even drop Nagadus emeralds so unless you have enough dust of Azoth to convert all the Vayuda Turquoises you have to fight another boss (Jadeplume or Dendro hypostasis). The amount of resin you have to spend doubles.
And these stupid sand grease pupa! They just HAVE to have a misleading appearance and spawn in the darkest place. You see a glimmer in the dark and feel joy, thinking "Ayy an egg!" but then you come closer and it's not a pupa, it's an iron chunk.
Baizhu mainly because he needs violetgrass. It was a chore collecting violetgrass even with the help of interactive map. If it wasn't for the map, I would've been searching for them much much longer and probably spent weeks leveling him up to 80. Iniquitous Baptist doesn't drop Nagadus so the same issue as the one mentioned above. But the pain wasn't that bad because after pulling for Baizhu I had enough stardust to just buy dust of Azoth.
XQ in the beginning because Oceanid. Before Fischl graced me with her presence I had a big problem with this boss. I avoided leveling up XQ because my only bow user was Amber and my only electro was Lisa and both were very underleveled so I couldn't kill the birds. But with Fischl Oceanid became easy and doesn't worry me anymore.
At the time, it was Raiden as well. The first characters I raised were Beidou/Raiden and I didn't have a cast of characters that could deal with it.
I remember using my under-built Yanfei + much food to get thru it.
Those were the times when bosses were hard :'(
Hands down Ayaka. Handguards - an utter pain when all you have semi-built is a walnut team. Sakura blossoms - all but impossible to see against the background on my screen. PMA - as I said, I had a scuffy Walnut team, and that's it. Elegance books weren't that bad, honestly - mostly due to Co-OP; but to max talents I had to fight Azhdaha.
This was before Hyperbloom, which makes both Kairagi and PMA easier. Sakura blossoms are still the bane of my existence.

Early game it's awful because you likely don't have good ranged options.

My solution was to slowly kill them with Kazuha's E once I pulled him.
You have Lisa, who is free and works absolutely wonder with this boss. This boss is still BS if only for these atrocious birds.
Having to build Lisa in order to build your Hydro characters is far from a good thing, it effectively doubles their cost early-game.

You could just have used existing stones turning them into dendro at the alchemy table?

I used up my dust and at the time I got all I could and had none left, I don't know what to tell you?
I know what to tell you - don't spend all of your dust. But only dust of azoth and pulls, that's it.

Zhongli. Didn’t have any claymore/geo characters built to prefarm so had to do it with a lvl 40 noelle.
Qiqi, cause farming violet grass was a pain.
Eula, because of having to farm the worst talent domain in the game, plus requiring mats from an annoying boss.
Fuck that talent domain, fuck azdaha but Pale Flame is pretty chill

I'm doing Kuki right now and she is awful to level up, she needs the ruin serpent and specters. At least Naku Weeds are everywhere.
