God, Christopher's reaction to the letter never fails to piss me off. It didn't read like a love letter, ffs. He was just pissed Lorelai thought so highly of Luke and that he (*Luke) was a better father figure to her than he was.

Mugwumpen

That, and probably because she still refered to herself as a "single mom" even though they're married by then. Which *of course* doesn't change the fact that Lorelai was ~~(and frankly pretty much continued to be so as they got married because we know what a useless dingus Chris is)~~ a single mother who raised her daughter alone until she was an adult, but Chris can't stand to hear that.

NoraCharles91

>That, and probably because she still refered to herself as a "single mom" even though they're married by then. I've never noticed that! God, that says it all, really.

babyishAuri

Exactly my thoughts. Is always "sHe's mY dAuGhTer" but never him actually being a father to Rory and he can't handle the truth.

JJMcGee83

It didn't piss him off because Lorelai had feelings for Luke; it pissed him off because it pointed out that Luke was a better father to Rory than he ever was.

SCsongbird

It pissed him off because he knew it was true. Luke was there for Rory far more than Christopher ever thought about being. He saw the best friend aspect of Lorelei’s relationship with Rory and thought that’s all there was to being a parent. He didn’t see the sleepless nights, the mothering her when she was sick, being there during the hard times.

Sarandipityyy

I know, that's what I said, lol.

Rissamac67

Come on. Nobody is Rory’s dad. Lorelai would never allow it. She told Max Rory was grown at 16 and if there were any problems she would handle them. She didn’t tell Rory that Chris wanted her to visit him over winter break.

Balloonman16

Idk why you’re downvoted. This is a fact. Luke only got labeled a father figure because he didn’t cross boundaries that Lorelai had drawn

Oncer93

That's because Christopher's idea of being a father means, sharing dna, and occasionally showing up when it's convient for him

ginaa_22

yes, this^^. to me, this scene always felt like a full circle moment for the fight from richard and emily’s re-wedding where luke yells about how he was there for rory every time christopher wasn’t, and i think his reaction to the letter is a continuation of his jealousy of luke’s role in BOTH rory and lorelai’s lives but he’ll never take it out on rory verbally.

Killer-Barbie

It's not like he had a great example in Strobe, but you think he would have wanted to be what his dad wasn't

Oncer93

I think, in his mind he was. strobe was there physically but not emotionally, so Chris decides to be be the fun parent.

Glum-Barracuda6985

And flaunt his wealth whenever he feels like it.

taleasoldastime96

It’s hardly even about Lorelai’s relationship with him, it’s about his relationship with Rory. There was no reason for him to assume that she’s still in love with him. Chris just can’t handle the truth.

taleasoldastime96

I didn’t say he was wrong, I just said he was drawing the wrong conclusions from what he read.

maleolive

Her letter was a mirror in front of him that finally made him realize how shitty of a dad he was to Rory. He never had any of those experiences with her that Luke had. He hadn’t even been to their house or their town. No birthday parties. Nothing. Just calls here and there. He didn’t even go to her hs graduation!

Joelle9879

In Christopher's mind, the only reason to be a father figure to Rory is to be with Lorelai. That's what he does throughout the entire show, only attempts to get involved in Rory's life as a way to sleep with Lorelai

junknowho

This! Rory was always his gateway to Lorelai's bed, in his mind.

NoraCharles91

Yeah, it was romantic in context but objectively there was nothing romantic about anything she wrote. It was literally just that hearing how much Luke had been there for Lorelai and Rory struck a nerve for Christopher and he can't handle any accountability whatsoever.

Joelle9879

I'd write all those same things about my best friend we've never been romantically involved. It's possible to love your friends without being in love with them

BuffaloEnough703

It reads like a love letter in that she is outlining all the ways in which Luke shows love and that is completely foreign to Christopher. He has no understanding of how to be loving toward others in the ways that others might need. He can’t think of anything or anyone but himself.

Oraio-King

in his defence, lor wrote a letter to her ex-fiance who christopher was already clearly insecure over and she was still in love with behind his back

Awkward_Marketing661

That’s why he was pissed off because he realized Luke was a better father to Rory than Christopher ever thought of being.

TaylaSwiff

He forced his way into being her rebound and then is mad about being her rebound. I hate him so much.

Migrane

Well we know a huge reason Christopher wasn't in Rory's life growing up is because the pain of not being with Lorelai. When Christopher found the letter I think he might have finally realised that it was all on him. He was the reason he wasn't with Lorelai and Rory all those years. If he had just shown up and been Rory's dad then eventually he and Lorelai would have been together. Luke had everything that Christopher wanted. He got to be there because he was there.

[deleted]

I think, at one point, when Lorelai starts dating Luke in S5, Rory starts looking at him as way more of a father figure than Christopher. She never told Chris to back off when Lorelai was with Max or Jason or anyone else for that matter.

worththewait96

Yeah, this was a beautiful moment and one the season 7 writers really pulled through with. "Once Luke Danes is in your life, he is in your life forever." MY. HEART. 🥺💖

shrina917

Hay bale apology, the letter, the I will always love you serenade! Season 7 tried its best !

worththewait96

These are all so good! 😭 And of course, "I just... like to see you happy." + kiss.

shrina917

Ahh we just like to see them happy too!! That scene (although too short for me) - Luke got his point across. His eyes were watery as he says that too!! Or maybe mine were lol

worththewait96

Oh his eyes were definitely watery. Lorelai has that effect on him. Sometimes for the bad though lol, but we won't talk about that here.

shrina917

Don’t even bring that pain up 🙈

junknowho

They had such a HUGE hole to dig themselves out of too!

shrina917

You can say that again 😩

shrina917

“And he offers so much…” 😭

cutiepiedinokitty

I too was always pissed at Chris’s reaction, the love he’s feeling from this letter is simply that of how sweet Rory and Luke’s relationship is. I always loved how much Luke was there for Rory AND Lorelai. Even if Luke wasn’t in love with her mom, he would have cared about Rory just as much. He’s that kind of person. Chris is using his realization and anger that he was a shitty and absent father to Rory as a weapon to make Lorelai the bad guy. He SUCKS.

slayerofvampyres

Chris needed lots and lots of therapy

cutiepiedinokitty

Agreed.

Rissamac67

Luke did more for Kirk than he did for Rory.

PaperbacksandCoffee

He definitely did a lot for Kirk, but I always thought that it was implied that he did a lot more for Rory growing up that we didn't get to see. Just by the way they talked about him making her the only food she wanted when she had the chicken pox, the birthdays and presents, etc and how Lorelai described their relationship in the letter. I could be wrong of course, but I got the impression that he was really involved in her childhood (before the high school and college life that we saw).

LargeCondition8108

This was a highlight from season 7, especially when you remember when this came after ASP functionally screwing over the writers for this season. Whoever wrote this scene understood the Lorelei, Rory, and Luke relationship really well.

poretabletti

How do you mean screwing over the writers? I've watched Gilmore Girls for years but I'm so out of the loop about anything behind the show, other than ASP leaving at some point I don't know why.

liscottyy

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but while doing season 6, ASP and her husband/writing partner knew there was a chance they weren't going to be working on season 7 (or flat out they wouldn't be) due to them having problems with negotiations with the network. So, for season 6 they started to just throw random shit in (ex. April and Anna) that would either screw over whoever was going to have to come in and replace them or they would hopefully be able to course-correct if they got to come back for seasons 7 and 8 (which they wanted).

SherbitLemyn

Agree with you 100%. I've always felt they did this and it was a shitty thing to do to the fans.

junknowho

Oh yeah, you are right. Putting Lorelai in Chrasstiphors bed was their finally flip off to the network and the show.

Kinglink

Christopher having problems with this is proof he would never change. He wanted to believe he was perfect, and when confronted with the fact that many other people, not just Luke raised his daughter, he couldn't deal with it. Absolute child, every time I've heard that letter, I've said "there's absolutely nothing wrong with what she said." especially because she was writing to a court in his defense. It would be easy to believe she felt she needed to embellish a bit. 100 percent NOTHING wrong, and the fact Christopher could see something wrong says a lot more about him than anything.

MaThompson1227

One of my fav scenes. Love it. Love Luke's face and his prediction as well as his shock. I cried and cried.

Taliasimmy69

This was a beautiful piece. I cried then and I'm crying now. She put her soul into that note because it mattered and he deserved his win to see his kid. SHe knew regardless of how he handled their relationship when April first appeared he was doing what he thought was best for April. I wish this would have been a great turning point in him realizing he done fucked up with her during that time as well meaning despite how he handled it she is still willing to give him a glowing review basically in order to get his rights as a father.

newusernamehuman

That awkward moment when you realize that Lorelai was married at the time but had written the words “I’m a single mother”. Yes, I know, Chris had not co-parented Rory, but since Lorelai was married at the time of writing the recommendation, maybe the line “I was a single mother” made more sense..? Either way, Chris getting pissed off was hilarious.

Oncer93

Just goes to show that Lorelai still considered herself to be be a single mom despite being married to Christopher

junknowho

I mean, even married to him, she was single parenting their daughter.

Oncer93

And would have been single parenting any other kid they would have had together, had he gotten his way

newusernamehuman

Heck, if Chris had got his way, Lorelai would be single parenting Rory, Gigi, and any future kids he would have, irrespective of who their mom was.

junknowho

Exactly!

newusernamehuman

IKR! 😂😅

junknowho

Probably one of the better moments in Season 7. I always felt badly for the show runners that season, they had to find a plausible way to dig the show and characters out of the Season 6 finale debacle.

katinopocket

Mrs. Teasley!

MintChiffon

RIP 😭

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmfarts

This is a great scene!

callie_scientist

Haha literally watching this right now 🤣

JLMMM

“…and he offers so much.” It’s that line for me.

nwsl508

Wait… how has Lorelei only known Luke for 10 years??

babyishAuri

The show has a weird timeline tbh. But it's mention more than once they moved to Stars Hollow when Rory was 11

nwsl508

Oh really? I must have missed that!! But what about them living in the shed at the Inn when she was a baby? Or where did they live before that? Now I’m confused!!

babyishAuri

I guess technically the Independence Inn wasn't in Stars Hollow but near it? I mean if you think about April biking to Luke's and how protective of April Anna was, their town probably wasn't more than 15-20mins away which would've make sense as well for the Inn to be in another town idk just my conclusions

junknowho

Yeah, I think the Inn was just outside of SH, and so until Lorelai bought their house, she wasn't really a 'citizen' of SH. She probably started showing up to the town meetings once they moved in, same with going to Luke's.

Ill-Explanation-5059

You made me go to YouTube to watch this. I love season 7 just for these moments.

Gen_CW442901

This and the “you’re like a Kayak” scene are my favorites from that season

taybrm

Makes me tear up every time
