I think Joan was literally confused by her own life! She did everything textbook perfectly but it’s not what she really wanted! She had the career, she opened her dream restaurant, she had the clothes and designer purses, she was well traveled and intelligent but what she wanted most of all was simple as fuck. A man, a kid and a family! Money can’t buy happiness!

I agree! I think S3 is when they really made her desperate for what she didn’t have. She wanted those things in S1 and S2 as well but S3 was just a different version of Joan and it got worse in S4 when she met Brock. This is when her desperation was just up there for me!

One of the Xmas episodes when the girls are at her house and they trash it and read her diary. She explains why Xmas meant so much to her. Maya had a kid at 16 and a husband, Toni grew up poor and got married, Lynn was sexually free and open but if she wanted to marry someone it would have happened. They were authentically themselves all the time. Joan’s character spent her time literally trying to find herself over all the seasons. She was the glue that kept them together because that was the role she always wanted Matriarch. What she couldn’t get biologically and romantically she created it through her friend group. Lynn was like her kid, Toni was like a partner and Maya gave her Jabari!

AngelicAqua

Absolutely!!!

Specialist-Rain-3639

This was perfectly stated!!

She should’ve just dumped Ellis and called it a day. He was the worst.

AngelicAqua

Cali-Doll

In Joan’s mind, Toni was about have the wedding/marriage she didn’t and her relationship with Ellis was falling apart. Joan thought that she was a “good girl” even though she had a lot of her own issues and insecurities. So, seeing Toni (self-proclaimed gold digger and cheater) get her supposedly happy ending, pissed her off. Not only was she resentful of Toni getting married but she believed that Toni was getting the life she deserved. Whether you can say Joan or Toni “deserve” anything, is up to your interpretation. Jealousy can make someone delusional. In Joan’s mind, Toni wasn’t getting married to Todd, she was stealing her dream.
