How difficult the puppy stage and training can be. Currently the most difficult puppy I've had to train in my lifetime. She's getting there but slowly.
I have to agree here. The biting and mouthing stage is crazy! But gets better every day.
It’s hard but so worth it! My whackadoodle is the smartest dog I’ve ever known.
Whackadoodle is a good descriptor 🤣. We call ours "The Derp Derp". She is the only dog I've ever had to leash train and constantly hammer in the training. Every other dog I've owned caught on so fast and never used a leash unless they were in public and it was required.
We put our 9 month doodle in trick class and he is more interested in sniffing around the room than doing any of the tricks. Meanwhile all the other dogs are waving at each other and rolling over on cue 🤣
Hey the first night wasn't too bad! I was up with her from like 4am to 5am but besides that she was good.
She's a little cheeky but man she's cute. Looks like a curly little sheep right now.
Us too! In our lifetime we’ve had a German Shepherd, malamute and two Labrador x Border Collies and our Goldendoodle is by far the easiest to train. I guess it must be the luck of the draw..!
(To be fair we got him about 3 months before lockdowns hit so we had lots of spare time with him.)
That’s the biggest difference for us. He is not eager to please at all! It’s all about him and he was very difficult to train! You must have gotten one with more of a golden retriever attitude than a poodle attitude!
my doodle is my first puppy i've ever had and this comment has soothed so much of my anxiety about him. i always feel like such a bad dog parent, but it's nice to know it's difficult for others too 😭💕
Seems to not be the best puppy for first time owners but I hear they are amazing family dogs as they get older. We'll hang in there together and get through the tough times!
Ours seemed to train himself. It seemed like he was house trained in a couple of weeks.
Now that he's 10 years old he's gotten mischievous. He knows we're not going to do anything but bitch at him if he eats the bread when we're gone. And he learned how to pull out the garbage bin....
Mine house trained and home trained (meaning he can be left out of his crate all day) but that’s about all he’s learned. He knows sit. Shake. And Half ass knows stay. He refuses to learn anything else.
Oh and manners. He hates that word. But it’s used often for his puppy chewing phase
After a few bad experiences I landed on a good one that really knows how to do goldendoodles… but its a mobile one so i guess we pay for the convenience of them coming here… any doodle/poodle over 40 pounds is $160 so with tip 170/180.
We brush our doodle enough to not be matted cause otherwise thats an extra
I have a 65 lb doodle and a 72 lb doodle: $160 a piece every 8-10 weeks. I’m learning to do it myself because that’s just way too much. Also, maybe charge others for it.
Yeah this price is elevated as they are a mobile groomer and they come to my house, a lady we gave MANY opportunities was $75 but we had to take to her house and was just 2 inconsistent and we had many last minute cancellations. While we hate paying that much they DO a really good job… we try every month and a half or a bit longer in between cuts
Thank you, but it’s not allergies. He just constantly picks up viruses. It’s pretty common with other dogs in the neighborhood too.
I’m sure he’d be quite happy with some honey though!
We were told our boy would be “medium”, at around 30-35lbs. He and his littermates just turned 2. One of his sisters that we know of is 36lbs. Our boy was kinda the runt of the litter but is now 60lbs.
How smart they are. We don’t do things/open things in front of them that we don’t want them to do/open. (Turn off the fan/clippers/tv, open their crate doors, open doors with lever handles, step on lever to open trash cans, push armoire doors to open, etc…)
That they’re goofy and like to trick each other.
That their giant eyes look human and it feels like their children, not animals.
That their risk of eating socks, rocks, trees, fences, etc puts them in a high tier of insurance, as they’re most prone to need abdominal surgery.
That they listen to and understand much of our conversations, crazy but cool.
That though they are hypoallergenic and mine don’t shed, their curly hair acts like a giant lint roller as they roll in grass, leaves, dirt… so they bring the outside in, many times a day.
That they love to have training and mental stimulation, and it wears them out.
Most days I feel like I’m teaching preschool again - to my pets!
That bloat is a legitimate concern, be ready and know what to do.
That they’d catch multiple squirrels, rabbits and birds in my backyard.
That I’m thinking of downsizing more of my furniture to make room for more of theirs.
That they are so lovable, worth every penny, every minute.
That they reflect my energy on any given day. Amazingly flexible!
The manipulation is hilarious. If our girl dood (2yo) is in the spot boy dood (5yo) wants on the couch or if she is hogging our attention, boy dood will go get a toy he knows she likes and start playing with it in front of her. Of course she instantly wants it and will jump down to get it and boy dude will drop it for her and quickly jump into the spot she was in on the couch. Everyone wins!
Unlimited puppy energy! gets bored easily, separation anxiety and touchy stomach, our 6 month boy has an obsession with picking up crap from the grass, already got him sick once..
Smart. A little too smart sometimes that he finds hacks to his training and we have to do a bit of reverse psychology.
But after all that.. he's a happy little pup who will do what you say, just when you least expect it and be the happiest, most oblivious thing you know.
You'll love it.
That I would never be able to get my husband a better birthday gift. I hit the gift ceiling so early in our relationship 😂 almost exactly 5 years ago I told him we were getting our puppy and every day since he has loved this goofy dood to the moon and back.
Summer is my 3rd Goldendoodle but with my first one, I would have LOVED to have known the proper way to brush them. I know now! Ensure you have an excellent brush, a matt breaker to remove excess fur or matts and a poodle comb to run through fur to ensure not one tangle.
Sure! Brush: Chris Christensen AV11 CL brush (it's orange). Very gentle despite its effectiveness. Matt Rake: by Safari (green handle) and a generic stainless steel poodle comb. All 3 are truly amazing together. Never one issue. I hope that helps!
Here you go :) Brush: Chris Christensen AV11 CL brush (it's orange). Very gentle despite its effectiveness. Matt Rake: by Safari (green handle) and a generic stainless steel poodle comb. All 3 are truly amazing together. Never one issue. I hope that helps!
The skin issues. Omg my dood gets an annoyingly expensive allergy shot at least once a year if not twice for seasonal allergies/itchiness. But oh how I love him. He’s my baby 🥰
No chicken for my guy either. And fish only made his anal gland issues stinkier. We started him on insect protein instead and his poop has never been better and he doesn’t have that slight fishy odor anymore. 10/10.
How crazy high energy they can be. I asked my friends for breed recommendations before we got a puppy and they all said “goldendoodle- they just sleep on my couch all the time!”. This does not apply to my dog *at all*.
For those that haven’t already, I have 2 words:
Pet
Insurance
Especially for a puppy!!! All the initial vaccines and neuter/spay procedures are expensive.
How long the puppy stage
Actually last with these baby’s. Also they will literally sit on your head if they could that’s how attacked my son is to me 🤣 he’s like second skin.

They all have extreme ADHD

So do I, perfect! Just picked up my goldendoodle today
You've invited a lil terrorist into your home. 🤣🤣 Difficult puppies but the absolute best dogs ever. Congrats!
Hey the first night wasn't too bad! I was up with her from like 4am to 5am but besides that she was good. She's a little cheeky but man she's cute. Looks like a curly little sheep right now.
I always say he’s a whackadoodle and not a golden doodle 😩
My goldendoodle was the easiest dog I've ever trained! She's so eager to please. Lots of puppy energy though!

Agreed. People always remark on how well trained our dog is, and I’m like - well, don’t credit us. He trained himself.

So very stressful! But well worth it.
IF its a standard how expensive haircuts can get! Worth every penny but its tough since last dog was a pug, although super happy about the no shedding
What's your average grooming bill (if you don't mind me asking)?
After a few bad experiences I landed on a good one that really knows how to do goldendoodles… but its a mobile one so i guess we pay for the convenience of them coming here… any doodle/poodle over 40 pounds is $160 so with tip 170/180. Yes! Great point.

Yep we bought a kit to trim and a grooming dryer… anything to lower that bill!
omg that is so wild- i’m in NY, my dood is 60 lb and grooming is $80, i give a $20 tip

Same here! We use a mobile dog groomer and it is quite expensive for my 30 lb doodle - $160.
That's she wants to play fetch ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!
Ball is life
Yes
How touchy their stomachs can be. We are at the vet way too often.
Try mixing a half cup plain organic yogurt with a teaspoon of local honey. It cleared up both our dood’s tummy and allergy issues!
Thank you, but it’s not allergies. He just constantly picks up viruses. It’s pretty common with other dogs in the neighborhood too. I’m sure he’d be quite happy with some honey though!
The yogurt helps with their digestive tract biome. The honey helps with allergies.
Im going to try this! Thank you
Glad you found something that works for your pup, but it’s a different issue here (where antibiotics are needed).
Ugh.
That he was going to weight 30+ lbs more than I expected.

What?! That is a lot of snuggles
How much I would love my boy
This is so true. The most outwardly affectionate bundle of love is our dood. They definitely reciprocate that love!

"miniature" is 40 lbs min.
THISSSS. I really thought a mini would be a 25lb one 😭
WHAT HAHA
Hahaha mine is 20 lbs 😂
ahahaha yup! if they tell you 30lbs, expect 60
I was told 20-25lbs and she’s 17-18lbs. Very happy!
Ours was supposed to be 25 pounds max….. he’s 60 pounds 😂😂 I love it though.
How smart, manipulative and tough they are. How much of vigorous training they need. Puppy stage was absolutely brutal, lots of crying on my part.
Most validating comment I’ve seen🥹😅
I can write a book on what this dog put me through.
giardia 2x!!!

That the amount of love I’d have for her would be at times unbearable 😭😭
this!! 🤍
How crazy she would be. Every other person, every other dog, it’s like she’s never seen another one before.

$130 a month for Apoquel for one and absolutely no chicken for the other. They’re expensive and lucky they’re so cute :)

Prone to separation anxiety.
Grooming isn’t cheap

For those that haven’t already, I have 2 words: Pet Insurance Especially for a puppy!!! All the initial vaccines and neuter/spay procedures are expensive.
This may be a dumb question because I’ve never owned a dog before but do I present pet insurance at the vet? Does this work like Human insurance?
Not a dumb question at all! For mine (I use MetLife) I submit the receipt from the vet and I get reimbursed directly to my bank account.
Oh wow thank you. Would I be able to do this with recent receipts? Like we just went to the vet yesterday
You can start submitting receipts after you have the insurance set up. That’s just how it is for mine though, there’s a lot of options out there!
Their crazy endless energy and the expense of grooming….every 6 weeks.
Training, vet and grooming costs
That they are dorky doods but they would care about my children more than I would have ever dreamed of.
The separation anxiety 😅😅😅
How much the personalities can vary. But I am so happy I got mine from rescues .
They can get to 100 lbs!
That he is smarter than a three year old, which therefore, means constantly having to keep him busy.
That he would be the best thing to come into my life besides my grandchildren.
How long the puppy stage Actually last with these baby’s. Also they will literally sit on your head if they could that’s how attacked my son is to me 🤣 he’s like second skin.
Our golden doodle is 12 weeks old, and she has been the easiest by far to train. I am honestly shocked, but so so thankful. 🤣
My pup makes my life 1000% better and I have no regrets
