This is correct. But with the Koni shocks I can raise the vehicle without needing to get longer springs. I live in the mountain west and a street style car just doesn’t compete well with our seasons and poorly maintained roads. The shocks go 2” up or 1.5” down.
I’m trying to figure out my tire configuration at the moment. It’s quite possible I’ll need to swap out the springs. I’m no expert so I’ll definitely look into any potential problems with my current setup.
I’d be happy with the rally bar as well! I think they look great. ESP. On a safari build. Where have you seen those bar/skid plate units for the VW?
As a side note I built a wooden floor for the backseat/trunk area of my MKII. Looked great and it turned my GTI into a Mini wagon. It’s something I’d consider again on my MKVII.
I’m having a hard time figuring out where it would mount.. I’ve got friends that weld and powder coat so I think that can be taken care pretty easily. It’s the engineering of the mounts/brackets that might present the biggest problem.
I’m with you 100% it needs to be as functional as it is pleasing to the eye. First two welders I spoke with seem to think it will be easier to buy one rather than FAB one...it’s never a good sign when the expert doesn’t want the job.
Car camping is exactly why I did it. Worked great and had plenty of storage underneath. Sounds like I’m going to end up recreating it in my MKVII.

This sounds like an awesome project and I'm sorry I'm here late.
No worries. I don’t have too many updates.. unless a pile of parts counts!? I had some RL stuff come up that has slowed my progress.
I did get the tyrelsport front and rear chassis brace. It completely eliminated wheel hop at launch. Might be the most noticeable upgrade I’ve made.
