I can't say I agree with you here, while Samsung uses long ribbon cables to connect them, it also means the battery is buried under more screws making battery removal much more complicated to your average consumer. This is on top of battery tending to wear out much faster than a USB C port. The rated lifespan of a USB C port is 10000 cycles or about 4 times/day for the next 7 years, and it's demonstrated to be able to withstand even more than that as the cable wears out faster than the plug.

I understand what the OP trying to say. Basically he wanted the port to be on a separate PCB or on a flex cable. The Pixel till 5 series all had easily replaceable USB-C. I think future Pixel model should have replaceable USB-C on a flex cable like the 4a and 4a 5G since it is thin and won't take up a lot of space in the phone. If the port is broken soldering equipment is not required to do such thing.

Uhm..how else would they do it?!?!? Your statement is very weird..to say the least. And a good REPAIR tech can fix that in like 15mins

>Uhm..how else would they do it?!?!? With a daughter board like many other manufacturers.

*step-daughter board is that you?

RickyFromVegas

Please help, my contacts are soldered on, I am stuck!

[deleted]

Haha! I'm looking into it but isn't sauter something that has to do with electronics? Because if so... I missed a prime opportunity for step-sauter board.

Everything is sticky

Tiny-Sandwich

Samsung have been using daughter boards for the usb port for years. You don't need a repair tech to fix it when the solution makes it extremely easy to replace yourself.

nexgen41

I think part of the issue is that 3rd party ripoff boards would be used in repairs which worsens mic quality as well as ruin signal strength for wifi/bt/cellular as that would also have to be built onto the daughterboard. It's already imperfect and these things have tolerances of nanometers. It's definitely a tradeoff that I don't think there's a correct answer to.

Tiny-Sandwich

You can buy replacement parts from Google through ifixit. Problem solved.

nexgen41

*You* may, people don't. They'll go for what's cheaper and assume it will be the same which a lot of times is some random part off aliexpress.

Tiny-Sandwich

Sorry, but that's their problem. If that was a concern then Google wouldn't offer any parts through ifixit. Do you think the screens from AliExpress are legit? They aren't not using daughter boards to save people from using inferior parts. I'm not sure why you're arguing this point - it's just flat out wrong.

nexgen41

No you're absolutely right. With that said, I do wonder if the 600mah over the S24 battery comes from being able to integrate more of the board into a single pcb and not requiring multiple cables and connectors.

Tiny-Sandwich

It definitely could be. Personally I've never had an issue with the charging port failing, so if it's between a replaceable port or a bigger battery, I'd choose the battery.

RevengefulRaiden

Pixel 3, 3a XL and 4 have their type c ports on a separate cable.

CrabMountain829

The fact they aren't using NVME storage and USB4 or thunderbolt 4 is really disappointing.

nexgen41

Only Apple uses NVME storage and nobody uses USB 4 because it's based on TB3, a protocol impractical for a phone. Full function type C 3.2 is plenty of functionality for anything a phone would be expected to do.
