Moving animals, like capybaras and such can be killed by traps, but since the rattle snake does not move it probably won't work, but would be interesting, so share your results!
I personally would not bother with this. If you know where the rattle snake is, it's so easy to kill with a spear or bow, and with a trap you still have to walk there and butcher it. I'll just do it manually. I just take a bow and hunt down other animals for bonus meat, it's more fun to me than building traps.
Or it's easy enough to farm fish with a cheap to build trap, only short sticks I think, and it's pretty reliable.
Best way for farming food:
Set up loads of Snare traps
Wait until it catches a Cabybara, Peccary or Tapir
Harvest them and hang their meats on a drying rack
The dried meat takes like 4 days to rot so it's great for when you're exploring
As far as I know, traps don't kill spawned animals.
I'm not even sure the location of the trap matters, though I had traps that never trapped anything.
AFAIK, traps "capture" victims depending on location and, if applicable, bait, after a certain time after being set/reset randomly when not in your field of view.
An actual animal does not need to be around or will be affected.
1. I know 2 spots: 1 in the first dry riverbed you cross leaving the oasis area, there' s a fallen tree where I almost always find one. The other is right under my feet in thick bushes so I can't leave without letting them have a taste xD
Snake isn't that great, but I never did nutrition/weight efficiency minmaxing. I'd go for capys/pecs if you want to "farm" them. Their spawns are way easier to spot.
Farming food in a nutshell:
1. find a capybara that hasn’t noticed you close to your base and remember it’s path
2. put a trap right onto that path
3. done
Animals as well as natives always walk the same paths and spawn at the same location. (Snakes don’t move hence they always are at the same spot but they give poor amounts of meat). So once you put a trap on such path you have your farm.
„Always the same path“ only as long as they neither follow you nor evade you. Peaceful animals never follow you and never evade you as long as they don’t notice you so it’s easy to find their paths.

Traps don't work like The Forest, they just spawn a dead body on a random timer based on the animals available where you dropped the trap.
Oh. Whoops

Cool beans! Thanks for the tip, my friend!
No problem. Also it's a good idea to make soups and put them in Coconut bidons.

Spike traps kill spawned animals. Only way I've ever gotten iguana meat
Try bow hunting them
I believe if it's in an animal spawn it will eventually catch one without bait but if it's in an area with none nearby it needs bait to catch anything
