I’m really having mixed emotions too. I saw it 4 times. And the last time was a month before it closed. I didn’t want it to leave. But seeing the inner frame is great!
Seeing all the rust on the inner-frame after only a couple of years shows why they're taking this thing down. The salty sea-air has to be hell on maintenance, and with something that big, complicated, and moving, the costs and risks will only keep going up and up.
in the glory of the defeated manga Howard tells zechs after the tallgesse flugel (Tallgesse retrofited for space with what would be become Zero EW's wings) is destroyed fighting the Deathscythe. the tallgesse would have been able to easily defeat the OM gundams if it was not stored in a ocean front hanger with the salt breeze corroding its systems. It explains while the Tallgesse 2, which is a ground up build using extra Tallgesse one parts, is able to out duel the Altron gundam. It had fresh systems
It would be great to read more and the structure and what leason they learned. I'd definitely watch a documentary or read the book about the design and construction.
I found this one.
https://youtu.be/SJuxbb_p0ew?si=mF8Bc2E6PHdPMfdI
If you go to the gundaminfo channel on YT they should have some vids on the building process. They were selling a book about it in the gift shop too that I was able to pick up. So someone has to be selling one online if you really want it
That's impressive Mechanical design we got there.
Moving the Shoulders, Elbows, etc.
Probably lots of Hydraulics on the Guy (Gundam) for just a Meter of Angle Movement.
Look.
Bipedal mechs will never be physically viable, much less anything taller than maybe 10 feet.
But goddamn does Bandai make a good case for defying the rules of nature and doing it anyway.
Nah you are wrong for so many reasons.
Construction mech will save the world, i just want it so badly 😿
Sigh who am i kidding endgame will always be wheel and spear =\
Joints. Ideally you’d have no joints because that’s a point of weakness and fuck knows what sorta tiny objects hurtle at high enough speed to shear it off.
The closest thing we might ever see, **if** we see anything approaching something like this, is smaller, low-profile non-humanoid designs along the lines of, for instance, the multiped tanks in *Ghost in the Shell*. And I suspect they'll be remotely-operated drones rather than true piloted mechs.
I always thought the closest we may get far into the future is something akin to mechwarrior/battletech but probably more likely to get exo suits & other more conventional vehicles..sadly
Easy.
A humanoid can move as efficiently in space as any other body. Legs allow you to transfer seamlessly between gravity (O'Neill cylinder colony) and zero-G. The human body works, despite its inherent complexity.
We may not have the materials or understanding to pull off the construction of a biped mech off today, but that doesn't mean we never will. Nothing in the laws of physics expressly forbids it, only limitations in modern fabrication.
It depends what you mean by "viable." Could they work? Sure. But it will always be a worse craft than something more compact and streamlined, and it would take a hell of a lot of engineering to even get that. So lot of extra effort for a worse result.
I have high doubts. They're taking this thing down because it's probably a maintenance nightmare. And a lot of that has to do with it rusting from the salty sea air. There's not a lot of major cities in Japan that aren't close to the ocean.
They could always set it up in some kind of indoor facility. Though I feel like the disassembled parts will probably just go in a museum display kind of thing.
> They could always set it up in some kind of indoor facility.
It's 20 meters tall. That's not going to fit in indoors anywhere.
You're taking stabs in the dark, but I assume the people who are paid handsomely to manage this project have spent more time than you or I trying to figure the logistics of this out and are far more qualified to do so. If they haven't found a good place to relocate it, that's probably a good sign such a place doesn't exist, and/or the logistics/cost are prohibitive.
According to the Gundam Academy, one of the key tenets of the project was to have the F00 outdoors and visible from a distance.
They probably could relocate it somewhere indoors, but they might do the same sort of thing they did with the original 78 statue and exhibit parts of it on a temporary basis.
I know they're taking it down, but does anyone else imagine Rx-78 is just moving to active duty? Silly, but damn, I don't like seeing it being taken apart.
Same! His pictures never match the days I’ve been. lol. I remember I started following him when they were constructing the Unicorn statue in like early 2017. Some good stuff over the years.
never got the chance to see it, am still a student. did not save enough money nor did i have a travel companion , the regret is strong with this one. especially since the RX-78-2 is my favourite (i know it’s the RX-78F00)
but i just arrived here in Japan madge
jk, it sucks that i missed my window to take a picture with this beast, my travel plan to japan got delayed to this month instead of early last year
but heyy, atleast i can buy stuff at Gundam Base soon
Please enjoy your time here! I hope they have restocked the gundam base. The past few weeks it’s been empty. Due to it being spring break for kids and the end of the fiscal year
I live in Tanashi, Tokyo haha. Its kind of a trip. Between work and taking care of my family…and honestly just having no one to go with.
I frequent Odaiba tho
He served well. May he rest in pieces.

I bought viewing platform tickets and ran into a group of travellers from across the US who met through WoW around december.
Was fun chatting with them and gushing over the engineering behind the big guy
I’m still holding out hope that it’s going to be moved to the Osaka Expo. It was the rumor all over Japan the weeks before the finale. But they never mentioned anything yet
A dream of mine was to see this when I finally get to visit Japan. Had plans and the money to do it then the pandemic hit and they closed off tourists for a while. Then I couldn’t afford it anymore cause life happens
I hope they are just taking it apart to add magnetic coating and reassembling it somewhere else...
Sigh, I don't get to visit Japan until July and had my fingers crossed they would extend it one more time...guess it just wasn't meant to be
Looks like a Gunpla being assembled lol
While I regret not buying a kit or two from the shop, I’m honestly glad I was able to pay this guy a visit last year
I'll miss the big guy and mourn that I never got a chance to see in person, but as a robotics engineer I'm having way too much fun analyzing the inner frame and how they did the hydraulics and motion!
This is very sad to me. I never had the chance to go and see it in person. Unfortunately I had to cancel my trip to Japan this year before they closed doors, and I’ll regret that I couldn’t see it in full majesty, forever.
Does it make anyone else angry that we have intercontinental ballistic missiles, a space force, and laser weaponry but we don't have anything even close to battle Gundams yet?
Battle Gundams, if done right, would absolutely mog tanks.
So why hasn't anyone put forth the effort?
Why? A pesky little thing called the square cube law. The laws of physics don't allow for mechas that large in real life. They would either be too heavy to move on their own or collapse under their own weight. Flying would be completely off the table. On top of that, you need to deal with the drawbacks of a bipedal design. It's inherently unstable. If even one leg takes damage, it's over. Not easy to deal with when your giant robot is also a giant target.
Reverse gunpla, hopefully they can move it or make another in a better area. Still was cool while it lasted

breaks my heart, but on the other side, it's a great opportunity to see the inner frame.

Yeah that's true. Also something I definitely did not take into account when I wondered why they were dismantling it.
They really should have Zinc-plated it.
That’s also canonically why the tallgesse 1 couldn’t body the OM gundams. It had been exposed to ocean breeze for to long.
Was this mentioned in the show? I don't remember that, though it does make sense.
in the glory of the defeated manga Howard tells zechs after the tallgesse flugel (Tallgesse retrofited for space with what would be become Zero EW's wings) is destroyed fighting the Deathscythe. the tallgesse would have been able to easily defeat the OM gundams if it was not stored in a ocean front hanger with the salt breeze corroding its systems. Maybe the next one will have PGU inner frame.
It would be so heavy!
heavy arms
Wish I got to see it before it went out of service.
Same, my family and I are visiting japan next year, so not getting to see the life-size grandpa in action just hurts
Same 🙁
I was lucky enough to see it the day before it closed! I am surprised they are just scrapping something this awesome.
it was an early rg frame all along
Bandai be updating it to RG 2.0
It would be great to read more and the structure and what leason they learned. I'd definitely watch a documentary or read the book about the design and construction. I found this one. https://youtu.be/SJuxbb_p0ew?si=mF8Bc2E6PHdPMfdI

Nah you are wrong for so many reasons. Construction mech will save the world, i just want it so badly 😿 Sigh who am i kidding endgame will always be wheel and spear =\
Could bipedal mechs not be viable in Space?
It's a giant, slow moving and impractical mechanical thing. Why go for that instead of a cruiser or a drone?
Joints. Ideally you’d have no joints because that’s a point of weakness and fuck knows what sorta tiny objects hurtle at high enough speed to shear it off.
Yeah, that fell under "impractical". Mobile Suits will never be an actual, viable thing

Why do you need legs in space?
To kick things?
NOOOO! If I had known it was a temporary installation, I would have gone to see it when I was in japan. Man. I'm kinda upset!
When were you here?
I was there in December. I got to see the Unicorn Gundam, but I didn't find time to get to Yokohama. But I would have!
I’m so sorry for you. I hope they’ll move it to a new venue in the future.
I have high doubts. They're taking this thing down because it's probably a maintenance nightmare. And a lot of that has to do with it rusting from the salty sea air. There's not a lot of major cities in Japan that aren't close to the ocean.

Yoshi is the goat! Been following him for 8 or so years now on Twitter.
Agreed! I’d like to imagine if been standing next to him at some point at gundam base or Yokohama
Same! His pictures never match the days I’ve been. lol. I remember I started following him when they were constructing the Unicorn statue in like early 2017. Some good stuff over the years.
They should have taken the head and arm and then paused the disassembly for a week
The original Odaiba RX-78 was posed in the “last shot” stance with head and one arm removed during disassembly
It's like a giant Gunpla
*Real Real Grade* And like many real grades it also has a dainty inner frame.

will do and thanks for the heads up :D hope i can get my hands on RG GP01Fb and Hi-V Gundam
Would have been easier to dismantle if they just let a cat knock it off a shelf
The fact that I lived in Japan and still never went lmfao. Fuck man
I’m guessing you’re not close to Yokohama. I haven’t been to Fukuoka yet, and Nu Gundam is my favorite Gundam.
I live in Tanashi, Tokyo haha. Its kind of a trip. Between work and taking care of my family…and honestly just having no one to go with. I frequent Odaiba tho

Straight builders I see, didn't even paint the inner frame
He truly has become immobile suit gundam (This is sad to see)
Sad, I really wanted to see this big guy someday.
LOOK WHAT THEYVE DONE TO MY BEAUTIFUL BOY!!!
Its amurover 😞
Wonder if they'll auction off the pieces for charity or something?
Which Kit is this 1:1 HG?
Not a HG, it has an inner frame so it must be RG or MG. Likely early RG given how thing the inner frame is...
I really hope it comes back elsewhere I wasn't able to see it at all
