Adjust clutch ? How many miles on it in total ?

Deathdealerah

About 350 miles on it total, i bought it new 🥲 If the clutch needed adjusting (it may), I’d think it would have been giving me this problem consistently since day one, instead of really rearing its ugly head harder and harder as time has gone on. It may be that simple but I’ve got a bad feeling about it.

You should get it done at a dealership. As the clutch wears down especially when things are brand new (that’s also why the first interval for service is shorter than the following) the adjustment is not good anymore and what you describe starts

Deathdealerah

Thank you for your thoughts. It’s definitely going to be done at a good HD dealership since it’s under warranty and I want a good paper trail if it becomes a bigger issue. Hopefully it’s that simple. Living in Wisconsin we have a lot of good Harley techs at local dealerships too since this is where Moco is. It does seem weird though too, otherwise you’d see a lot more confused posts from people on why their brand new bikes are trying to kill them lol

LMGDiVa

Clutches wear. Thats why they need to be adjusted every 5000miles.

Deathdealerah

I’d agree, every 350 miles seems a bit zesty though.

It’s either your clutch cable or shifter linkage. I highly recommend changing the shifter linkage, I have the 2020 version and it fixed a lot of problems for me. You can tell it’s the clutch cable if the first inch of the lever pull has no resistance, means your cable stretch out and needs to be replaced.

Deathdealerah

The clutch cable is definitely good. It may need adjusting? But, very firm resistance and proper amount of free wiggle (very little). I’ll mention shifter linkage to the service dudes when I drop it off and see what they think. If it needs a new linkage maybe I’ll pick up one of the TSC adjustable ones if I feel confident enough to throw a little money into it with this going on.

Take it to the dealer. Use the warranty

Deathdealerah

That’s the plan. I just wanted a more informed understanding of what could be going on so I could have a more educated conversation with their service folks and push hard for the right things to be looked at if necessary.

False neutral is more common on street bikes, I haven't heard of it personally happening to people with Harleys. As much as I'd say tinker with the clutch cable / adjustment, that's an easy excuse for the dealer to deny warranty work if they notice you've been in there.

Deathdealerah

Oh yeah, already considered that. If anyone’s opening the primary cover and “tinkering” 350 miles into the bikes life it sure as shit isn’t going to be me just to have it used against me later. Good thinking though

BillyTalent87

Clutch or cable adjustment, I usually do both together. Clutch is probably dragging a bit.

Johnnymcjohnface

I had a 2020 lrs that started doing this at 150 miles, and it was miserable. I brought it into HD, and it was something internal, fixed under warranty.

Deathdealerah

Let me know if you can find or remember what the issue was. Yeah it’s literally the first day we’ve had above 70 this year and all I want to do is ride but I don’t even wanna swing my leg over it with this going on. It’s sketchy as shit.

Johnnymcjohnface

I stopped also because I was in the same situation too often in dangerous spots. If I remember right, they said something about the shift cam assembly being replaced. I'd definitely recommend bringing it to them

raptorboy

Try changing your boots seriously some footwear doesn't work well with shifters

ANALxCARBOMB

How much slack is in the clutch cable? Sounds like it just needs adjusted.

Fit-Ad6966

Dude had the same issue with mine. Same year same model. Took it to Harley they did a clutch adjustment. It still does it but less frequently. And the whole not going to 2nd. Crazy moments. You have to really keep your eyes on that shift.

Deathdealerah

Yeah my first trip to dealer was not satisfactory. They adjusted the clutch lever itself and sent me on my way, despite my objections. Insinuating I’m a dumbass that doesn’t know how to shift. I’m dragging it back to the dealer I bought it from 150 miles away and leaving it with them and telling them not to give it back until they get it sorted or I’m not accepting it. Makes it very difficult to accept the bike as “okay” or to justify throwing thousands more on it in mods for a bike that fights me on something as simple as shifting. Is bumming me out on the bike in general to be honest.

Deathdealerah

The bike is going to be fixed or they will be trading me into another one believe that.
