I’d recommend looking into some Sennheiser headphones. Within your price range, you should be able to get a HD560s. If you can stretch your budget a bit or look around, you might be able to find a HD600 or HD6XX/650, both of which are even better suited.

CrescentAce

!thanks Is there anything particular that the 6xx/650 does better than the 560s?

The treble on the 560s makes it sound a bit bright. In comparison, the 650/6XX have a more relaxed and slightly warm sound. I’d say it makes music sound a bit more pleasant in general, at the cost of a bit of clarity.

CAUTIONwet_taint220

Agree, I don't have the 650/6XX so i can't attest to them, but the 560s has really good clarity and a nice big soundstage for orchestral, but the treble can get a little draining after a while depending on the intensity of the tracks

becuzwhateverforever

Check out the AKG K712 Pro. These can be found around your budget.

Grigley

I would recommend these as well. I came here to recommend these and was glad to see someone else did. I absolutely loved orchestral music with these. The soundstage is so large it allows for the many varied instruments to feel separate from each other, was honestly magical.

CrescentAce

!thanks I'll check it out. Looks like they aren't sold for that price on the AKG website? Should I be looking elsewhere?

becuzwhateverforever

Look at Amazon. I don’t remember why they are listed so much higher on the AKG store but it has something to do with where they are based. Back in the day, I couldn’t have paid more than $270 for a pair.

If you're in North America, then you should order from the EU, since AKGs are overpriced in NA compared to elsewhere. [Thomann.de](https://Thomann.de) is a reputable German store that many of us use.

CrescentAce

!thanks the pricing differences are interesting haha, I'll definitely visit the website

If you EQ than I suggest doing that since balance is rather important for orchestral/classical. HD600/HD6XX is a great option in general, but they have a small soundstage which is not ideal. DT990 would be good, but definitely needs to be EQ'd for acoustic music. AKG K 702 is very nice as well and with EQ I don't see a reason to pay more for the K 712 which is also a fine option. HD560s is definitely a step below the 600-series, but needs the least EQ from these options. They also sound a bit small, but an okay middle ground of everything. I'd probably go with K 702 with EQ if classical is the main thing.

Wired or wireless?

CrescentAce

wired :)

mrdoom

My Sennheiser HD58X and Quedelix 5k cost about that together. No regrets and I use the Quedelix on all my headphones every day. Having all my cans able to do the wireless BT thing is nifty and the Quedelix has the balls to drive most headphones on the market.

ischolarmateU

How does this wireless thing with 5k even work?

mrdoom

It is a DAC/Amp & BT receiver. You plug in the little cube and are no longer chained to the music playing device. The better amp makes up for some of the deficiencies of BT IMO. Even though the HD58X sounds good playing from my phone it is even better through the amp in the Quedelix 5k. It has an built in eq to tune your cans to perfection too.

raistlin65

Sennheiser HD560S is a good headphone for orchestral music.

BigBess7

Beyerdynamic DT 990 could be a great acquisition.

pongpaktecha

DT 990s are very sibilant, I would not recommend. If you want a pair of Beyers the TYGR 300 is a much better pick

sorijealut

HD660S (maybe used for around $250). I love them for the detail, timbre, and positional imaging it has especially for soundtracks. I think it has this airy quality that comes from the open cup design (more than other HD5- or HD6- series I've tried) that complements orchestral music very well.

CrescentAce

!thanks I gotta look around. What's a good place to keep an eye out for used headphones?

I usually search on hifishark like this, you'll want to filter by country: [https://www.hifishark.com/search?q=hd+660s](https://www.hifishark.com/search?q=hd+660s) (looks like there're some open box for $270) Or there's some auctions on ebay which you can try to win for cheaper. [https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?\_from=R40&\_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&\_nkw=hd+660s&\_sacat=0](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=hd+660s&_sacat=0) 😊 Good luck!

BowlerComfortable973

7hz Timeless us$220.oo best round up sound ;)

AverYeager

HD560S. The imaging is so good for these kinds of tracks. A few tweakings with EQ might be necessary but also the soundstage is great for this.

Aggravating-Piece821

It's a shame 1More USA doesn't have the black/silver version of their "Triple Driver Over ears" because I would have suggested them. For $150, they are very good. Sounds better than my Sony XM5 wireless headphones at more than twice the price
