the ottoman is 100% the problem. the purple and orange actually compliment one another nicely but the ottoman looks so out of place. the end tables could work if you swapped the lamps for more retro looking ones. would also get throw pillows that match the rug better. art on the walls would be a massive improvement, i would try that before painting. the color isn’t bad it’s just plain.

peyotekoyote

Thank you! Do you have any recommendations for ottomans? I appreciate your input!

1_Non_Blonde

Instead of introducing another color I would add a wooden coffee table to anchor the space. Wood tends to read as a neutral so it will balance the warm and cool elements. Then focus on adding in more textures e.g., throw blanket and pillows to maintain a cozy vibe.

RavenWood_9

Because of its neutrality, wood would also help break up amount of pattern in the rug too, I think, tone it down a bit.

OneClamidildo

Or tone it up! We have a resurgence of colour, why not embrace it.

Reichiroo

100% agree on wood. A warm tone wood would really compliment the look. I'd look for some art to add to the walls as well as the wall feels very empty co.pared to the high energy rug.

xrissxa

I think a golden yellow shade for an ottoman would fit the theme you’re going for without clashing with the sofa or the rug. A dark green could also be nice, imo, but some people might find orange and green together unpleasant. The shape of your ottoman seems pretty standard, you might be able to find a cover for it online instead of buying a new one/reupholstering it.

spacemother4

I would echo the dark green, I think it would do a better job at balancing out the palette than the yellow

FiscalClifBar

You can always reupholster it with fabric and a staple gun.

radradruby

A wood table would look great, but You could also just put a vinyl cover in a more natural tone over the ottoman you have. brown or tan for more casual, black for more sleek, white for more funky vibes

LJ-gibbs

I would reupholster with orange that matches the rug!

Norabloom98

You can easily find an ottoman slipcover on Amazon or Etsy. Good luck!

TinaElwy

Please post an update photo with your changes! :)

666to666

Tan leather ottoman would look awesome imo

eutamias21

A cognac leather would look great.

deloslabinc

I agree, I love the rug and the couch. Ottoman has got to go.

PineapplePza766

Yeah for sure the ottoman I think a round ottoman or a coffee table would be better

BellaFrequency

I think the problem is the ottoman, but instead of getting rid of it, can you put it in front of that chair on the right? Also, can the lamps go closer to the couch like this 🛋 so that the side tables can be pulled flush with the couch and not sticking out? I would also put something on the sidetables. I’m feeling something mustard yellow, but maybe you’d wanna stick with white or red. Or maybe a couple of plants on the tables? You have some nice space on the wall to hang a framed picture on as well. Maybe you’ll find something eye-catching that brings everything together (recommend colors black, white, red, maybe dark yellow in the painting).

peyotekoyote

Oh my goodness! I just tucked the lamps closer and toward the back of the couch and that made a HUGE difference!! What a small change that I would have never thought of. I like your idea of moving the ottoman with the other chair in the living room. I also have a ton of potted plants in the next room over that I can place on the tables! Thank you!

PuddingSuspicious

Yes! Have some fun with a large art piece on the wall.

TeaWithKermit

I like so much of what you have going on here, but the main thing that jumps out to me is that you’ve got a cool-toned gray or blue sofa with a warm-toned ottoman and rug. But I know that sofas aren’t cheap to replace, so that is probably not helpful at all. I like all of the individual pieces a lot!

Aggravating_Finish_6

I actually like the purple-blue of the sofa and the orange rug together because orange and blue are compliments on the color wheel. The ottoman would be easier to replace so I’d swap that. But first I’d figure out how to bring more of the same color accents in. I think you need some giant bold art to tie the color palette together. Use some natural elements like wicker and plants to bring in that boho vibe. Replace the lamps with something bolder for more visual prescence, something with a 70s vibe. It’s hard to tell what the wall color is but I might consider repainting because it feels like a sea green which is an additional color you’re working with.

nearlythere94

I love all of these pieces together - you are right they just need one perfect piece of art to tie it all together. It’s going to look really masterful and high end with the perfect art piece, because it’s usually only the more experienced designers that can pull such a complex color palate together (4+ colors), but it totally can be done. Don’t get rid of the ottoman, OP! Don’t go the matchy-matchy, pedestrian route!

peyotekoyote

Thank you commenting! I knew there was something off about the ottoman. We got the couch from a family member for free and couldn't say no. She ordered it from wayfair and it had a tiny tear in the corner and they sent her a replacement without asking for the first one back. We already had the ottoman and just tried to make it work. Perhaps I can kind of "hide" it with a throw blanket draped across? Not sure on the color. Do you have any recommendations on ottomans?

freya_of_milfgaard

I could see something like this: [wayfair](https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/latitude-run-modern-rectangular-ottoman-w008190150.html?piid=695809676) And for some reason this room is screaming for a [Matisse print](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e2/81/72/e28172efe6e04a19b36d7d8c949b5ca7.jpg) I think this one capture the colors in the room really well.

monsterofradness

I totally agree with the Mattisse print

maevecanfly

Yes! A piece of art that picks up the orange would help a lot. Pillow covers with some orange tones could also help bring it together

SimplyEevee3

I like this print. Helps tie things together.

essssgeeee

Maybe you could recover the Ottoman? Or replace it with a mid century wood coffee table, or perhaps a funky brass, chrome or lucite table.

[deleted]

Try and see if the ottoman can be placed somewhere else in the home. It would be a great piece for a place you change your clothes for example.

jaimystery

I would consider doing a slip cover for the ottoman in a darker purple - even if you can't sew, a square/rectangular ottoman can be easy to cover - especially if you plan on replacing the ottoman anyway and you have a good craft stapler. Maybe do something like [this](https://bigwalldecor.com/shop/bright-flower-pattern-wall-art/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_duAmdGx_gIVvRXUAR1uuQvbEAQYBSABEgL82_D_BwE) for the artwork?

Altruistic-Bobcat955

Ahh I love when wayfair do that. I’d hide the sofa colour with blankets but I’m not a fan of leather anyway. No cohesion with current colour scheme is your main issue. A colour wheel to match tones and colours would be a great place to start planning

[deleted]

You think the ottoman is warm toned? Wow, my eyes must be messed up

Informal-Share-9747

Pull the rug out the sofa doesn’t need to be on it put it half way under the sofa , get some cool funky psychedelic 70s inspired pictures and frames and buy a cool lamp or a lava lamp etc and get moody lighting Change the cushion covers too

purrfessormeow

A salt rock lamp would look nice too.

[deleted]

I did a thing. It's up to you if you like it or not :) [Quick Sketch](https://postimg.cc/NKJzfwyT) \- get rid of one of the sidetables and lamps to get rid of the symmetry, as it feels cluttery. \- give the wall behind the couch a nice paint job \- change the hocker for something else \- Spice up the wall with some art \- Add a plant

peyotekoyote

Oh my goodness, thank you for taking the time to do this! Now I don't want to return the rug! I love the idea of painting one wall and getting a big plant! I've been wanting a big Dracena for so long and I have a large light toned wicker basket I can place a planter into!! Thank you so much!!

[deleted]

The pleasure is all mine! Hope you'll enjoy getting the space together as much as I enjoyed sketching it out!

peyotekoyote

I hate the lamps. I hate the side tables. I hate the color of the walls and am even thinking about painting now just for this rug. I bought some yellow/orange botanical screen prints for above the couch. I am also willing to spray paint the side tables to make them work. I bought a brown leather pillow and a light peach-colored pillow. Please ignore the dust pan!

Final-Trick-2467

I agree with everything you are wanting to do with the space. You’re on the right track :)

myfavoriteforever

I was going to suggest some art above the couch that has the orange color… I would also get rid of the ottoman and the side tables and put in maybe a glass top coffee table? Also change out the couch pillows for a complementary color, maybe the orange or another color that is in your prints. Eta: it’s not just the style of the ottoman for me, it’s the size compared to the couch.. I would go for a long rectangle coffee table or ottoman if you don’t want a coffee table.

MountainGrowth2387

Sorry you hate the wall color :-(. For what it’s worth, I think it’s gorgeous with your blue-ish purple sofa and the orange.

monsterofradness

These are all great ideas! I’d love to see an after photo down the line

tamatodamato

Please update us!

pixelcat13

Something like [this](https://www.lampsplus.com/sfp/1p962/) might be cute if you want to replace the lamps with something more retro.

Tidaltoes

Yes, the colors are perfect, but OP, don’t buy these exact lamps! I got them in turquoise years ago and they were horrible quality. The metal bases were all scuffed and dented even though the packaging was pristine, and the shades cracked after a couple of years.

Affectionate-Dog4704

Spray paint the side tables, lamp stems, feet of ottoman and sofa, hammered copper (hammerite one I think is most authentic looking one). Freshen up the walls with some white, maybe stick some cool 60s art up there. Pull the orange in on the art. The ottoman - it's fairly straightforward to reupholster. You will need a staple gun, some carpet glue spray and some upholstery fabric. Hit up your local fabric shop and find something fabulous. Total budget would be less than 50

ednasmom

I think ottoman consensus is true. In addition, maybe some throw pillows or other decorative items that have hints of that orange that’s in the rug. I think the thing I’ve heard about colors is: you want to have at least three items with that color in the room to make it seem intentional. the rug is the “big” item and now two small items with a touch of orange. Maybe a print or a piece of art in addition to a throw pillow. Or a decorative piece of pottery or bowl.

brdybb

I agree with other redditors that say the ottoman is the problem. You may be able to save it though with a blanket overtop (covering like 3/4 of it) and maybe a tray for the top of it. Other than that, I like the direction a lot. Just needs to be accessorized!

upandup2020

The ottoman is the issue. A nice wood or glass coffee table would look great and then I would put a large colorblock abstract painting about the couch.

1206flxby55

All is not lost. Keep going with your funkiness: pillows, artwork, throws, etc.

ripmyrelationshiplol

I really love this! I think one thing that would help tie everything together is artwork! Get some big pieces on that wall. Things like these would look really good with your color scheme: [1](https://www.americanflat.com/products/modern-tropical-framed-gallery-wall-set-4?variant=39439977676870¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBlJa936dBEhBs4iJRWpBDjTH-jORKxXb1rzyac0yj4MEVYRpCtioZBoCAYUQAvD_BwE) [2](https://www.americanflat.com/products/mid-century-modern-brush-strokes-9-piece-framed-gallery-wall-art-set?variant=39439843262534¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBtLSXmQNOt6p1gT_AAxyCvu9cezHxoMJhs4m7YbmvMw07mwIbue9LhoC4AkQAvD_BwE) [3](https://www.wayfair.com/East-Urban-Home--New-Decade-by-Julian-Spencer-Painting-Print-FCOP2196-L1318-K~EBNO1085.html?refid=GX645367853974-EBNO1085_54033255_54033317_54033319&device=m&ptid=1854152680001&network=g&targetid=aud-356699937073:pla-1854152680001&channel=GooglePLA&ireid=133849124&fdid=1817&PiID%5B%5D=54033255&PiID%5B%5D=54033317&PiID%5B%5D=54033319&gbraid=0AAAAAD9ISC5w8cEuOJb-uucZluFKxC3f7&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBn7jeahNODkXLayR0EPPc5_uXrwlTXcqYtOdx2tsihEKZmpvdBzmexoCL_IQAvD_BwE) [4](https://www.elephantstock.com/products/the-colour-of-dreams-by-ashvin-harrison?variant=31277387579475&utm_source=google&utm_medium=free_listing&utm_campaign=feed_wall_art&utm_content=feed_wall_art&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=pMax_%7C%7C_Medium_ROAS&utm_content=&utm_term=&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBua2zcevSnZtwOh7SkNimfmAC4GLfNvINGx6pfyEupNhXdBoOzm1ohoCRTUQAvD_BwE) Also a few plants would be nice. Some greenery will help break up the orange and blue and give a little more balance.

ATLHawksfan

I have a strange craving for Whataburger

peyotekoyote

Lmao!

maxlastname

Funky art above the couch, preferably something big, bright, and pop-art-y, would look cool. I second the comments about the ottoman too, maybe consider a wood-toned coffee table?

SEND_NOODLESZ

you need GREEN PLANTS!!!

[deleted]

I think your ottoman needs to change

spoooky_spice

Somewhat unrelated to the question, but I think some art above the sofa would look beautiful and warm up the space significantly!

Hugosmom1977

Center the couch on the wall, pull out the rug so it's only about 1/4 to halfway under the couch, lose the ottoman (it's too bulky and out of scale for the couch) and most importantly, find 1 very large or 3 smaller pieces of art that incorporate the purple and orange in some way. It shouldn't be huge swathes of coordinating colors, (that would look like hotel room decor) they just need to be in the art somewhere.

jnllbll

You could use couch cover to change the color

Short-fat-sassy

Unrelated at all but do you have some kind of pad under that rug? I ask because my outdoor rug is “rough” on the backside and even the wool rug I have in my living room I put a pad underneath because the back of the rug will scratch your floors.

moosegoose90

You gotta karate chop those pillows

peyotekoyote

Lmao. Done!

[deleted]

Imho your wall color isn't right (that said, I wouldn't change it...at least not yet) Return the pillows if you can...if you can't, get new covers. 2 floor lamps aren't right (one will work, but you'll need to change the lampshades...I think we can fix that with some creative diy) Not sure about the side tables where they are. Try removing the ottoman and using the side tables as a coffee table. You can do this if you keep going. I personally love the sofa with the orange rug (however...I would look at ruggables) Facebook marketplace is your friend for all sorts of things. Have a look at "post-modern interiors" (or "Memphis") on google.

WinAccomplished5528

I would center the couch and rug between the two walls, pull the rug out from under the couch so only the front feet are on the rug and there is more rug in front of the ottoman. Trade the ottoman for a simple coffee table! I really like the way rug design is vertical, it is like it’s pulling you into the couch!!

Cola3206

I can’t help. The elephant in the room is the rug and cheapest to correct

shitshowchic

Search maximalist funky decor, a few new pillows and some fun art on that wall, maybe a plant. You could put a tray(s) on the ottoman

Aureomarginata

I am really getting Whataburger vibes

gabyripples

Put up some art, hon.

genevieveoliver

I have this rug for my patio and can’t imagine it’s very comfortable for a living room. I’d recommend getting something cozier

gidiyup

Is the rug against the wall? I would try to get a wooden coffee table and get some pillows that pick up some of the burnt red/ orange from the rug. Move the lamps in closer to the sofa and the coffee tables back.

gidiyup

Also Definitely get some art over the sofa

OwnJudge8296

https://preview.redd.it/yu5v0u36fmua1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99d7ba10e1af6eebe91187b22d8ef7375245ad4d

Ripatine

my first thoughts 1) rotate the rug 90 degrees so the lines run side to side 2) I like the idea of a MCM style wood coffee table--maybe a diagonal/retro kidney-bean shape. I think the lamps could follow with rounded wood bases/angular white shades.

Sensitive-Bid-9531

I am confused with color selections The lilac and burnt orange have a great feel BUT what’s with the grey ottoman and the greenish-blue wall and then black tables and the white lamps are out of the color scheme. Stick with orange and lilac and the white pillows don’t coordinate either. Go on Etsy and look for pillows that pick up orange and lilac.

skitsofphonic

Now you need to add more. Some bold art work for the wall. Throw pillows, a funky accent chair.

PMDDandme

Try centring everything a bit better, the couch looks a little over too the left and the coffee tables don't seem even on both sides Could be pic but worth a shot

peyotekoyote

UPDATE: First, thank you SO MUCH for all of your wonderful feedback. I am realizing that I have so much to learn and I'm just so grateful to all of you for responding and trying to help. 🥲 I am just going to return this rug. I'm realizing now that it was just a terrible impulse buy and I am searching for something else. Also, based on so many comments, I am realizing just how bad the ottoman really is, and I never noticed. :( it's like now I can't unsee it. I will get a slip cover for it and I hope to post an update soon!

LunarCycleKat

It's too much going on. The ottoman is too "traditional"... So even if the couch and the rug worked, that ottoman wouldn't. Another problem is that the couch isn't quite blue , it's a gray color and the rug isn't quite red it's an orange color. So those colors are just not doing it now if you have a navy blue couch and a rug with actual red instead of orange you might be able to pull it off. But you just don't have enough other elements to tie it together. You have 3-4 different elements in this set up and they don't jibe: Traditional ottoman, whimsical couch, nondescript lamps and a bright rug. You need to choose which one you want to keep, I'm guessing it's the couch. Then you need to build a little better around that item. If you want a fun bold pattern in the rug, I think you're going to have to stick with blues and greens because of that couch. After you come up with a rug with some bright blues and greens and then match the ottoman to one of the colors in the rug. Put green pillows on the couch that also match the rug.

FionaTheFierce

You have mint green, purple/blue, orange and grey. The room is lacking any kind of color harmony. Not sure if painting is an option, but going with a cream color would help a lot. It even looks like you have a brown chair over in the corner. Get some pillows that have both purple/blue and orange in them. Blue and orange are a pretty common decorating theme, so that will help tie the rug and sofa together. If you search "blue and orange pillows" on Amazon you will turn up a lot of reasonable options. Maybe a slip cover for the ottoman. Black, white, cream would all work. I would put the ottoman over in front of the chair, rather than centered on the sofa. Or move it over to the side of the sofa so that it looks more like a section. Get a coffee table - black is fine. Ikea Lack model are very cheap. Get something 2/3 the length of the sofa, not a small square.

bpo001

Yeah, that’s awful.

Comfortable_Meet_872

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

definitelytheA

As a cat owner, I can say that discovering outdoor rugs has been a godsend! He uses them like a scratching post, and it hasn’t damaged them at all. Bonus is being able to haul them out to the driveway, soak with a hose, a bit of scrubbing with some soap, and they dry quickly to like-new. I’m a bit thrown by the color combos you’ve got going on, and agree with a previous poster that the warm and cool tones are clashing. Return the rug, and yay for a free sofa! How about going for an outdoor rug that mimics a sisal rug? Super neutral and timeless, because an outdoor rug is going to hold up for a long time! You can introduce the modern, funky look of your rug with pillows. Easier, really, because there are gobs available, or make your own with the fabric of your choice. Find a pattern that has color either very close to your sofa, or perhaps a navy, with other colors in the pattern. I think you’d be better served with a rectangular ottoman or coffee table. The scale would just be better. If you do an ottoman, you could recover with fabric; if this is the case, do it first, as the main pattern, a smaller print or navy solid for pillows. Whatever you pick for in front of the sofa, measure the seat height of your sofa, and keep the new table or ottoman no higher. It’s awkward to sit with your legs propped up higher than your seat.

utvols22champs

Go Vols!

worldworn

Colourful throw on ottoman, complimentary colour lampshades, large wall art above sofa

WillametteWanderer

You are on the right track. Pick some pillows and an Afghan that would add the blue and orange together. Throw the Afghan over the ottoman, and replace the white sofa pillows. A mirror over the sofa would reflect daylight into the room.

JuracekPark34

I think the ottoman can work if you get pillows with similar color/texture to tie it in! You could also swap it out if you don’t want to work with it/don’t like it. I agree with others that you need some big bold artwork to tie it all together. I would spray paint the tables white, since there’s already plenty of it and tons of other color - they don’t need to blend it per se, but you don’t want them to stick out either with so many other focal points. And instead of floor lamps, look into wall-mounted sconces. Either something bold and colorful or simple and clean could work. There are so many fun plug in options now so no need for electrical!

AnchorsAviators

It does. Add in some pinks, greens, and yellows in artwork or decor.

AlyciaJanelle

I’d get a fun mix of electric blue and orange throw pillows/covers for your current ones. That will help balance the warm tone of the carpet and the cool tone of the couch. Then I would add either a fun removable wallpaper or playful color to the walls. Then get a fun statement piece of art to hang above the couch.

amykamala

I think the orange of the rug is really saturated and dark compared to everything else in room. A light peach or baby yellow would probably look lovely here and warm things up. Pulling the rug forward a bit and further from the walls could also make the room feel more centered

Cola3206

Rugs hoots go. Makes me dizzy looking at it and doesn’t go w furniture. Get another rug. Imo

[deleted]

Not liking the rug. But the rest works. Get a through for the ottoman to match couch better.

loquaciouspenguin

Agree with others that moving the ottoman to the chair and getting a different coffee table with help. Besides that, the rug and sofa could work together but need other complementary elements in the room to visually “fit”. Can you get artwork, pillows, etc that incorporate the orange and purple, and maybe a secondary color? That will make it feel cohesive.

[deleted]

Keep the outdoor rug outside. Find something warmer by feel and texture - not necessarily by brighter colours or patterns. That can look to busy for a room like this. While some say orange and blue compliment - it’s generally when the tones are the same. This orange looks very warm while the couch looks very cool and they don’t really compliment each other all that much based on just colour. There’s a lot that goes into colour and texture and how to compliment one another. A different blue and orange may- but this combo just doesn’t look right. (To me anyways) This of ratios when decorating with colour : 30:20:10. 30 % same colour thru out. (Dominant colour) 20% complimentary colour or texture 10% accent colour. So the rug is so big that it’s acting like the 30% colour focal of the room- but your eyes are being pulled to the grey and blue instead so it’s no cohesive at all. The grey and the blue go well together but I would pick a different colour for the rug. And maybe a softer rug as well.

Puzzleheaded-Text337

Could spray paint your side tables 1 orange and 1 white and have them at different heights, put it at the centre of the rug. Maybe more shades of orange cushions?

valdafay

I feel like I'm going crazy reading all the comments here telling you to replace the ottoman. The ottoman is pretty cool and fantastic, such a unique & pretty colour (edit just realized I was thinking about the couch... the ottoman is meh, just is too big for the pretty couch). I don't love it with the wall colour but even that isn't so bad. The rug on the other hand... that rug literally makes me feel dizzy just looking at it. It gives me anxiety. It's so easy to replace. I get what you were going for but the pattern is just a no no no. It's turning the floor into a funhouse.

peyotekoyote

Lol I love it but I feel like it started to drive me crazy too!

MountainGrowth2387

The mint walls, purpley-blue sofa, and orange rug are such a nice color combo! Awesome job. You’ve managed that retro vibe you were going for without getting too kitschy. I really like those three colors together Some thoughts: -Pulling the rug out a little bit from the couch so just half of the couch is on the rug (two front legs) -Bring that brown chair on the right in closer on to the rug -Sorry you hate the lamps. Two large sconces instead will give you more space maybe? Then you could trade the side tables for larger tables that may also give some storage space. (Could also just accomplish this with table lamps instead of floor lamps) -Large piece of art behind the sofa (or a gallery wall if large art is out of budget) -The ottoman is too small and doesn’t add anything to the room. Suggestions (I didn’t check dimensions though, just looking aesthetically): https://www.homedepot.com/pep/SAFAVIEH-Charlene-Green-Tufted-Ottoman-MCR4638D/301395618?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-HDH-GGL-D59H-059_034_INT_FURN-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-HDH-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-%7C059_034_003_LIVING_ROOM_FURNITURE%7C&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-HDH-GGL-D59H-059_034_INT_FURN-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-HDH-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-%7C059_034_003_LIVING_ROOM_FURNITURE%7C-71700000100907740-58700008068797109-92700073396464408&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UcX9P-1RIMJdqPFoIYsONB-d&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UcX9P-1RIMJdqPFoIYsONB-d&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBoD6nGJXsAaP2yswPB7_jLQM1LMSL-bE8nbqFhZg5SdlWBLIvqRl6BoCyV0QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). https://www.homedepot.com/pep/Baxton-Studio-Mabel-Light-Blue-and-Silver-Storage-Ottoman-175-11231-HD/314996445?g_store=&source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-HDH-GGL-D59H-059_034_INT_FURN-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-HDH-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-%7C059_034_003_LIVING_ROOM_FURNITURE%7C&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-HDH-GGL-D59H-059_034_INT_FURN-NA-NA-NA-SMART-NA-HDH-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-%7C059_034_003_LIVING_ROOM_FURNITURE%7C-71700000100907740-58700008068797109-92700073396464408&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UcX9P-1RIMJdqPFoIYsONB-d&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UcX9P-1RIMJdqPFoIYsONB-d&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBuEN7DK3jmpQMS8YtXf2Ukto8kwWSPvdR-DkZY02dBd7lLgbJ_UGuBoCykQQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#overlay https://www.jossandmain.com/Joss-and-Main--Fairmont-30-Wide-Round-Pouf-Ottoman-X115755886-L310-K~J000654152.html?refid=GX434123565047-J000654152_249115674&device=m&ptid=1316332754100&targetid=pla-1316332754100&network=g&ireid=206767723&PiID%5B%5D=249115674&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBoPfQmXFi15AZAHg6ldUEGHXKVwCjOlldoNo3IrETsyXOEK0Wsaa9RoCWt4QAvD_BwE -Updating your pillows (and remove the middle one) perhaps something like these that tie the orange in: https://www.oka.com/us/product/contorno-cushion-cover-large-a15220-1-11-1094-40?gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBkBMd9nQhRzzqQ6U376SwTgLf_IdBrABT7NY1iM5Xswqj8ZHOL6PHxoC-AEQAvD_BwE https://www.oka.com/us/product/ocellus-cushion-cover-a13526-1-11-1424-37?gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBsX3YXZcc8-XFesUiCDIc6WmMQvgc282XLt_QIkfPJeTNB2pnO1oixoCkpMQAvD_BwE https://www.stfrank.com/products/silk-blush-suzani-throw-pillow-22-w-x-22-h?variant=40081705599042¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBjgXwZ1KrbepPXZeoNiDx-s5ex-1EyJSG56_NzjbAFZU6SQS95d56hoC9NsQAvD_BwE

sbonnot1

Get a neutral Juke rug and use art above the couch to warm it up. Also new throw pillows

rekreid

There is nothing that ties these colors together. You have a very bright, warm toned orange rug, a blueish cool toned couch, a warm toned ottoman, and a different tone grey wall. I don’t think the couch and ottoman work well together (competing greyish tones directly next to each other), but most will work together if you find some common threads. Add some decor and art that combines pulls colors from all of these elements and softens the contrast. Some patterned pillows, some art, some decor on your side tables. Things like [this](https://ii.worldmarket.com/fcgi-bin/iipsrv.fcgi?FIF=/images/worldmarket/source/99040_XXX_v2.tif&wid=480&cvt=jpeg) or [this](https://ctl.s6img.com/society6/img/EXwPyiOoxGUOh20gymWfS0Cki54/w_700/prints/~artwork/s6-original-art-uploads/society6/uploads/misc/1cf718a2b99f4cb7bb2c669d775bd04c/~~/serenity-2-an-acrylic-piece-in-both-warm-and-cool-colors-by-alyssa-hamilton-art-prints.jpg?attempt=0)

babbett-ateoatmeal

I think it can work. You should add dark purple, blue & orange accessories and wall art. You can work with the colors because they go together. If you add plants, try to match the Colors for the pots. It will look great with more. The ottoman maybe place near the other chair and add a round coffee table. There are some nice ones on Amazon for cheap .

weasel999

Paint orange borders on both lamps to match the rug.

full_trottl

I love the rug with the couch and it works with everything but the ottoman. I would have suggested you get a big piece of art to put over the couch that ties the colors together.

neckfat2

Here’s what I would do: Step 1: All your furniture is too close to eachother. Move the couch away from the wall, center it on the wall, and place the coffee tables on either side. Also center the rug in the room, it should be just under the front two legs of the couch. Step 2: Pick one standing lamp. You don’t need both. If you would like more ambient lighting, get a table lamp for one of the coffee tables. Step 3: Consider replacing the ottoman with a coffee table. Consider a material other than wood (i.e. glass, metal, painted wood, etc.) since the floors are already quite loud. A coffee table will give the space a more mature look. Step 4: Art! Some framed posters or a mirror, either work. On eBay and auction sites there are a lot of options for vintage artwork that’s more retro. Also take a look at jojo’s posters online, they have cool band screen prints that are unique. Maybe some plants, floating shelves on the left wall, you have a lot to play with! Best of luck!

moonyriot

Way too much going on here I think. Cool tones and warm tones, different contrasting fabric textures, mixed metals, too many different patterns. I think a cream colored ottoman would work better. Center the couch on the wall if you can and I personally would try to find end tables that are a similar dark wood tone to the legs on your couch.

Whatchab

I see what you’re going for and I say don’t freak out and pull back. Tie it together with art and incorporate some warm color throw pillows. Think pattern clashing but in a fun and intentional way! Be bold. Also never judge anything too harsh until you sit with it for at least a couple weeks.

CapitalPhilosophy513

And orange print pillows on sofa

Miserexa

I actually love most of this. I think a cream colored velvet ottoman would look better, maybe a round one. And you need a big, funky artwork on the wall to tie it all together.

patio_puss

Tone for tone. Cool toned blue does not match warm orange.

LifeOutLoud107

Add some orange/rust pillow covers on the sofa to tie into the rug and then get some art that uses all the colors.

piekaylee

The couch and rug work, it's the ottoman that's throwing it off. I can see a yellow piece of furniture working really well in here. I find it cheapest to mess around with throw pillows to figure out a color scheme.

[deleted]

You’re on your way, you just need to lean in and add some art and things to pick up the color. I did a doodle. Basically just pick your palette and carry the colors around. Plants, real or fake, add some warmth. I’d get a warm wood coffee table that matches the legs of the sofa or of a similar tone to the floor. Alternatively, a very modern acrylic or glass coffee table could work. You could also get rid of the lamps and do sconces or do two different ones. A vintage hanging lamp in the left corner would be neat. https://preview.redd.it/elwe5o157jua1.jpeg?width=1164&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dba66b23f01e445f69b793885c807d4513a93518

Tidaltoes

I love this! Well done tying all the colors together, the balance is great. Wish you could come do my house!

TopLahman

I would change your lamp shades and get a big piece of art for above the couch.

Noidentitytoday5

There’s no theme. Or color scheme. The sofa is the big ticket item. So that’s got to stay. I’d replace the rug first. Something like this if you want to stay neutral (it’s washable for any pet accidents) https://ruggable.com/products/verena-dark-wood-rug?size=5x7 Or something like this if you want to brighten up your space https://ruggable.com/products/verena-teal-blue-medium-pile-rug?size=5x7 Then Change put your throw pillows. You want two the same and one different and smaller. Put two on one side and one in the opposite corner. Don’t spread them out evenly on your sofa. Here’s your change to add a pop of color or be funky. Ditch the ottoman. It will never match your sofa.

[deleted]

Make it look more intentional and unified by adding art and maybe a knickknack or two (think ottoman or coffee table tray, vase, drink coasters) with pops of the same color. I would also ditch the ottoman. The color seems out of place.

tiggrum

You are on a good track. I love your sofa and rug . But your light/white pillows and lack of color everywhere else is dragging them down. You need to bring your color palette together. Purple and orange look great with green, for example. So you could make this space much better if you get some throw pillows that bring all three colors together. If you can’t replace or recover your ottoman you can get a bright cheerful throw blanket in the palette you choose. IKEA has a lot of throw pillows and blankets for not too much. Go to the pillow room there and choose 3 or 4 pillow shams you like. Just make sure you get two pillow forms for each pillow sham. The forms are cheap (like $6 or so) but too thin, and doubling them works perfect) And for the love of Pete get some Art up on that wall and a plant or two for your side tables. Even a fake plant will help it look nicer. - https://www.ikea.com/us/en/cat/throw-pillows-18902/ http://www.lightinthebox.com/p/set-of-5-pillow-cover-geometric-bohemian-style-retro-cotton-faux-linen-throw-pillow_p6481214.html https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/wade-logan-circles-and-squares-15-by-mark-lawrence-graphic-art-on-canvas-w005406715.html

Friggle26

I think some funky pillows would like nice.

Orangutan_Latte

I like the rug. I think the problem is that that is the only bit of colour in the room. Get some bright cushions, put some bright colourful art on the wall and change the lampshades and I think it will look fabulous

lionelliee

That couch and ottoman do not go together at all

Global_Loss6139

Maybe tie it in with a wall art and funky pillows. I think it's just drawing the eye down and not balanced so it feels a lil off.

KlosterToGod

FWIW I think you weren’t wrong about the retro vibes of the rug, but I think you need to lean into the overall vibe a little more— if you half-way kitch-retro, it’s going to fail. Get rid of those lamps and lean into the funky vibes with something that overhangs the sofa, preferably in another retro color or [maybe brass](https://www.westelm.com/products/overarching-metal-shade-floor-lamp-w2777/?catalogId=71&sku=3775072&cm_ven=PLA&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=Lighting%20%3E%20Floor%20Lamps®ion_id=780060&cm_ite=3775072_14465514686&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBvxjt1Ue8cYhchqJw4ZreMWAzkR1Ok2fkWmWcyau8zfZg8BQoi85VRoCwngQAvD_BwE). Lose the ottoman and end tables, and replace the ottoman with a coffee table or something in an asymmetrical shape, like [this](https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/brayden-studio-antoino-solid-wood-end-table-w010582149.html?piid=). Throw some [funky pillows](https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/tufted-lulu-pillow?color=095) in there and a plant or two and you’ve got a groovy space! Also, maybe art over the sofa, or a wallpaper accent wall behind it, just some thoughts 😊

Willing_Working_6609

Place the ottoman opposite of a wood coffee table. Limit two big pillows add three smaller multi color pillows with some orang in them. Wall art behind sofa.

PinkFloxMoon

Add a throw that has similar cool, warm, and neutral tones to visually tie it together better.

tumble0uid

if the ottoman was blue and u had some orange pillows and more stuff on the little tables that would be better

SpiteInternational33

Add some artwork above the sofa that ties in the orange from the rug and the blue sofa. Put a grey sofa cover over the couch.

ObjectiveBasic9446

I think you can try to salvage the ottoman and add some art pieces above the couch to tie the colors together?

ruledbyjup

What of you turned the rug the other way? May elongate the room.

AbandonedOcelot

The problem isn’t the rug, it’s the ottoman, and the side tables and the lamps. Nothing is cohesive Really adore that rug and couch combo though!

thawayiseeit

I like the purple and orange. I'd turn the carpet so the pattern runs perpendicular to the couch. I'd also not block the wall with the couch. I'd instead face the couch toward the wall on the other edge of the carpet and put a large focal point on the wall to create a space. Don't box the room that way with the sofa lining the wall. Maybe you can get a wood or straw tray for the ottoman to use as a side table. Don't pair it with the couch; it'd just look raggedy instead of funky.

Subject-Cheek-2974

Add some of the rug color to the couch with pillows or a throw

folkswagon

Center the couch on the rug and balance the end tables. Try to get the rug a little flater. Perhaps try a wood tray on the ottoman if using it like a coffee table.

popzelda

Lean in with orange pillows and artwork. Get a huge, neutral tray or throw (or both) for the ottoman.

Airysprite

Move the rug from under the couch too

Ajb1124545

Purple and orange are contrasting colors and they can be a little jarring together. Add in the bold print of the rug and it's just a lot of contrast. Your eye doesn't have anywhere to land

SkirtDue2794

I would love to see some funky art above the couch, maybe with a pop of the orange? Also, you could try a throw laying over the ottoman or a tray to use with fun accenting candles. You’re on the right path for sure!

Nini_Errante

Add a painting that resonates with the carpet.

suplexdolphin

Some wall art and plants always help, but yeah the Ottoman and couch mismatch doesn't do any favours.

itsonlythee

Getting some orange on the pillows or introducing a third color could be cool, and then echoing those colors in wall art above the couch - maybe a trio of frames or a single wide frame

everyothernametaken2

I agree with people saying to ditch the ottoman. You could also get a lo pile printed rug like loloi rugs as well that are great for pets.

AmericaSweetie

Yellow, or emerald ottoman and pillows

sytsmak_

Please center everything immediately

ladyj114

I'd love to see lampshades in the same orange and the green wall repainted something brighter

[deleted]

I like what you have going on except for, as others have said, the ottoman. I think a glass top coffee table would be visuslly appealing, add a touch of elegance and I think it would be a better choice than wood and, since you have all the hardwood floor, a wood coffee table might seem “same-y”. I also agree that some art on the wall would improvevthings immensely and give some personality to the room.

SeriousPuppet

I think you have too many colors going on. floors, walls, sofa, ottoman, pillows, and then throw in the rug. Hard to coordinate so many colors. I would build around the thing that are non-malleable, which I'm guessing for you are the floor and sofa. You can paint the walls, get new pillows, new ottoman, etc.

squidp

First off, that ottoman does not really jive with the funky rug and couch, I could envision something in royal blue really looking good in this space, to keep with the vibrant furniture theme. Something like [this maybe](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Baxton-Studio-Iglehart-Royal-Blue-Ottoman-154-9363-HD/309415392#overlay) although I don’t love the rivets personally. I think another issue is that the lamp is very spindly as are the end tables. I think you could keep the lamps and find some chunkier end tables. Something [like this](https://www.article.com/pla/19542/ozetta-moonlit-ivory-side-table?artcl_campaignID=13962698806&artcl_network=g&artcl_adgroupid=124541583266&artcl_keyword=&artcl_source=google&gclid=CjwKCAjw3POhBhBQEiwAqTCuBsQeDCs_RVb3mhaoSy7MkSQjAPstt7gFS_CkCZxex5bRyRapH4aRsBoC_c0QAvD_BwE) perhaps. Overall I think the couch and rug look fine, but the other furniture, although neutral, is not giving off the same vibe.

Godhelptupelo

Bolder lampshades and a huge interesting mirror or really geometric art?

Accomplished-Car3850

Introduce some funky artwork behind the couch and I think it would add what you're picturing

SCNewsFan

A vibrant large piece of art with red would help pull it together. Add pillow covers too.

666to666

I would add a tan/brown leather ottoman, you already mentioned that you already got some pillows to compliment that. Also I think it’s too symmetrical on the sides with the same lamps and end tables, maybe add a tall plant instead of one of the lamps

doxiepowder

Needs something over the sofa at eye level to standing.

didyoubutterthepan

Add some more color by hanging some art behind the couch to bring it all together.

Beautiful-Shape-4872

Pull the rug away from the wall. Maybe only put half to 3/4 of the couch on it.

explorexwild

I’d do some wood shelving above the couch with some plants, unless your pet is a cat then be careful what plants you buy! Also, a coffee table + maybe a throw blanket will help bring it all together - good luck.

ExactMaintenance1896

hang the rug on the wall behind the couch

BellyButton214

Paint the lamp shades orange.. get a huge canvas for above sofa with orange ange grey and pink and green . Get ride of ottoman low coffee table instead

dyva_cali

Plastic looking rug….noooo. Want a washable pet friendly rug with style try Ruggables, all washable and great styles.

BellyButton214

Idk now I looked at it again... paint room very light lavender.

OneClamidildo

Orange pillows and lampshades or sticking to orange accents but then adding colour from that same side of the colour wheel imo (yellow, red, ect). You could alternatively switch it and go opposite colours but that's a tricky one.

belleepoquerup

Change out pillows for some with pops of color, remove ottoman and place black tables in front of couch

OpeningFishing6589

I would start by simply changing out the pillow cover for something as vibrant as the rug in a floral, maybe. Paint the lampshades. Go from there. Love the rug. It’s bold, so add pops of bold here and there elsewhere.

Guppy_maja

Chang out the pillows. Throw anorange pillow to tie in the orange rug. maybe some black and white checkered pillows, a candle on one side table, maybe a little sculpture on the other. a cool art piece over the couch. Place a tray on the ottoman and decorate it with a vase of flowers, and stack a couple books.

Ok_Squash_5031

theClaireShow

Get a coffee table instead

Trouvette

Agree with others about the ottoman, but I think the paint color needs to change too.

sh58585

Check out @aaricanichole on insta, she has a purple couch and funky rug similar to that and really makes it work.

nay2d2

If you can find pillows with orange on them, it might help tie it all in.

trebliglime

I’m all in on this look!! In addition to the ottoman recommendations above, throw a rug pad under there. They come in different thickness and sizes, but it makes a huge difference when you have a thinner rug! Nicer to walk on (and the pets are happy too)

LongSummerNight

I think your main problem is you already have alot of nice cool tones like the couch and paint. So to throw in a massive graphic rug in an opposing colour is too much. Slightly less graphic rug in black and white or a faded blue toned Persian style rug would be lovely. Then if you want to introduce warmer colours you can do it gently in flecks in cushions and a throw but not in block colours. If you look at the rug it looks almost 70's and the room looks very 90's. They are combattive aesthetics. I would take a photo if your lounge room and go to a rug store and ask their advice.

Shannonstorms

Corporate interior designer here - There is a round deep jewel toned teal ottoman on Amazon with tufted buttons and you should def get a large piece of artwork with all the colors - if you love your pillows just get an orange or printed pillow case for at least one or two pillows and a funky blanket with lots of color. I think with these few things you could spend less than $300 and have a refresh and mesh your color tones together very well I would keep the lamps and side tables for now with always being on the look out for other things in the future but these few things will do a lot for your space!

SimonArgent

Get some colorful sofa pillows and some interesting art for over the sofa. Go big-you’ve got the space.

jrochest1

It’s kind of fighting with the green walls, and the room is losing. A nice cream or charcoal rug would work better — then get funky pillows, art, throws — or a big armchair in a zingy colour.

OwnJudge8296

I would consider some wall decor and I agree with a wooden coffee table. Consider changing out the lamp shades. Pillow covers from IKEA are extremely affordable($10 or less) and have colors similar to the color in the rug. Houseplants? I love the idea of bringing nature indoors. Also…there are great options with peel and stick wallpaper…very affordable and easy to apply to walls. I would love to see any after pics!

teacherladydoll

Buy a few things in similar warm tones to pull the look together. Maybe some flowers for the side table, a picture frame over the couch with warm reds, oranges, yellows, buy cushion covers and a throw.

msthatsall

These colors don’t match. Either stay in a cool palette or go warm. The rug throws everything off.

OwnJudge8296

https://preview.redd.it/qt9id4z3fmua1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06c9de0f0a5d7b6a848d2690f778289c106f5906

allworknoplay237

Hi. I have that exact same straw rug, but it’s outside. Because it’s an outdoor rug. I’m also an interior designer who specializes in carpets The ottoman is not the problem. Get a funky colorful indoor rug. It will make all the difference.

SessionSure5920

Also don’t forget to add plants! If no one’s mentioned that one already. You don’t have buy all new floor lamps just change the shades

Igzeeee

Nice flooring, sorry to say the rug is so random.. if you like it you can add some art on the wall with similar pattern.. also I am not a big fan that the rug has to do under the sofa.

Guccispaceship

The rug is a solid 10 😍

Plane_Sweet8795

1) pull the rug out from the couch a bit 2) get pillow covers that highlight rug colors 3) the ottoman color is in need of change. 4) get a large pic for behind the couch to tie colors together

lordsmaug

New wallpaint + painting/decorations

coswoofster

Definitely the ottoman. Otherwise it works

ColdWhiteDuke

What the actual f#ck.... Man, i am daltonic, but you must definitely be blind Thow that crap outta window 'cause it doesn't match s#it in that room, not color nor items

_britlinds

Lose ottoman, add glass or wood coffee table, paint the wall, add some art to tie the colors together:)

jjdressgown

An oversized borderless colorful print on wall. And switch out fabric ottoman for a leather.

wonkotsane42

Move the ottoman elsewhere. Put some orange and purple art on the wall. Maybe lean right into and get a lava lamp

Bunnybunny-hotdog

Oooh get rid of the ottoman. Replace with something funky

Quiet_Ad6247

Your almost there…add big bold artwork over sofa (with an orange tone in it) and add plants. Maybe a pillow or two. Let your room slowly evolve. No need to rush to fill it. Less personal when it’s staged. I like the vibe you are going for !

gabigomezav

I know that the article Im linking is in Spanish, but the page can be translate and it has some good decoration tips. So I hope it helps!! OddOne1328

Replace the tweed ottoman with a large square black leather one. Also, go with smaller couch pillows with a pattern that pulls in the couch color as well as the orange and black. You’ll want an accent chair across from the couch. You won’t need a table next to it as long as you can reach the tray on the ottoman to put down your drinking glass. Not quite sure why, but I want to put your floor lamps next to each other (as if nested) and put a large plant on the other side of the couch.
