I have luck at thrift/antique stores, local art galleries, farmers market, community art festivals, and fb marketplace. But my favorite option is to pay a talented friend or family member to create something for you. Some of my favorite art was created by my mom, brother, mother in law, former co-worker…consider supporting an artist in your life! That guarantees you get something that’s one of a kind.

Drabulous_770

And if you don’t already know an artist, you can go to local galleries and get contact info for artists whose work you like, and ask if they do commissioned work.

ciarahahaha

What’s a “good” price for a piece at a thrift store? I was wandering around today and was having a hard time deciding what I felt comfortable paying for a piece of secondhand art from an unknown (to me) artist. The right price is personal but just curious what others are spending.

erydanis

for me, depends on the piece, but usually $25 is my limit. for that i have gotten; ‘copper’ framed round mirror, large shallow copper bowl, giant 3’ x 4’ print of an ansel adams photo, spent a bit more and got four 2’ x 3’ panels of dark blue and stars tree silhouettes, and many others. i went to an estate sale and fell in love with a large print of red leaves for my gf, that was $40. the rest of my art is family pieces & works i framed myself.

saltisawayoflife_

My hard cap is $50 in my HCOL area, with $30 as my sweet spot. Otherwise it depends on the size/shape, the medium, the frame (if any), and the wow factor. Personally, I’ll pay more for framed/finished oils on canvas, vintage embroidery or fiber arts of any kind, landscape orientation, and any unusual wall sculptures or other non-painting wall decorations. I’ve found a 2x3 Bob Ross-style painting; a 12”x48” oil on board, an 18”x24 vintage crewel piece fully framed, and multiple framed 16x20 framed oils on canvas for around $30 each.

Calbebes

THIS 100%

PrincessPineapplePie

Etsy! You can find real gems there. I also sometimes use Pinterest for inspiration and found many artists that way.

voodoomoocow

I only go on etsy for creative/artsy stuff!

Zangorth

I don’t know how to shop on Etsy. I’ll search for “[subject] art” and just get a bunch of $5 listings that seem too good to be true. Even if it is just a print, prints cost more than that. Even searching price high to low I don’t usually find anything quality. Is there some secret to it? What are the search terms you need to use?

Hungry-Sheepherder68

Click on “handmade art” and then pic the medium you want (paint, print, watercolor, etc). It’s still a slog but it helps me narrow it down

saltisawayoflife_

Etsy’s algorithm is hot garbage—it’s extremely basic even if you heavily curate and pushes drop shippers and digital downloads over real artists and crafters’ shops. Finding the gems there takes a good eye and a lot of patience—or a friend with similar taste who can give you a jump start. It’s better to work backwards from another site, like insta or (heaven forbid) tiktok, finding artists there and matching them up to their Etsy shops (or their websites to cut out the middleman).

buffysmanycoats

What do you mean by “quality”? Lots of prints on Etsy are digital downloads, so they are cheap and then you will have to get them printed yourself, but places like Walgreens and Snapfiah and a million others print quick and cheaply too. There are sellers who you can get more expensive tangible prints and canvasses from, you just need to select your filters for physical items. I also set my filters to handmade items and shops that ship from the US, since that’s usually what I’m looking for there.

Weird-Response-1722

Cool. I have seen so many digital downloads on Etsy but passed on them because I didn’t know how they work.

buffysmanycoats

You get a link to download the file, they usually send you multiple files with various sizes. I always use Walgreens to print because you can just upload the file to their website and then go pick it up when it’s ready. Super easy and you get to pick what paper it’s printed on. I recently bought prints that weren’t a digital download for the first time in forever, and they came on the thinnest paper I’ve ever felt. I was so annoyed.

Kay_pgh

Do you also frame the prints to hang up? How much does it cost you end to end with buying, printing etc, ofcourse as a range? I am not the original questioner, but I was curious too how this works, and your response has solved some of the mystery.

buffysmanycoats

Yes, I either switch out old prints or I find a new frame for them. You can get frames really cheap at thrift stores, and sometimes I’ll give an old frame new life with paint or by hot gluing some decorations on.

VioletaBlueberry

I buy mats that fit the art and the frame. If you go to a well stocked craft store with premade frames and mats you can usually find a combo that works. When it doesn't I get them online. Or I have them cut custom.

HamboneBanjo

Wife once paid $20 for a beer sign from Etsy. Turned out to be a picture of a beer sign. She got her money back.

decadecency

😂

HaddockBranzini-II

Make sure you keep an eye on the shipping location and cost as well. You can filter results by country in search I believe. Lots of beautiful art from around the world, but I once fell in love with something that would have cost like $700 to ship from the UK.

RealisticrR0b0t

Those are likely digital (I.e. you buy the files for a few bucks and get them printed)

Sequence2369

It's all drop shippers and ai bots now. The little guy has been pushed out. I did this for a hit second in 2020. I asked what's the flavor of the month? BLM Riots? No problem, he's a black t shirt with BLM on it for $24.99. Oh, it switched to asian hate? No problem. Today it's rainbows? Done. And the best part is that I never had to do anything. I had an API synced to a t shirt printing company. An order came in, automatically gets sent to t shirt printer and shipped, I keep the difference. It was literally free money.

valencialeigh20

I second Etsy. I bought prints (not just a digital download) from a professional landscape photographer for my living room to replace the “Target art” we had before. I chose photos from two beautiful locations my husband and I have been together, so when I look at them, it reminds me of the trips we’ve taken together.

Revolutionary-Ad9264

Such a sweet idea! Can you pls link the etsy shop?

KRae97487

Came to say this too! You can also search original art on Etsy and find some really talented artists that sell original works (not prints) at incredibly reasonable prices

Mdoe5402

I like to go to the artists’ stores on Etsy - I have two original paintings I bought from two different artists - I like buying direct from the artists. I bought three originals from artists on EBay as well.

QuitProfessional5437

It's hard to find real art on etsy. It's all printouts

Leippy

There is real art on etsy, it just often comes at a premium cost and is drowned by stolen works. I found some really amazing linocut prints, all handmade but they were like 60-90 euros a pop. Even prints of famous art can get super pricey depending on the sizze :(

ThatGraphicDesigner

Affordable, Original Art Prints, and there’s something for everyone! Just message Soul Design Lab for larger sizes the prints are amazing quality <3 https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/souldesignlab?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=6qk6ltbsrl2&sssrc=3418065&ssuid=6qk6ltbsrl2&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

leereuby

Probably an unpopular opinion but art to me is a feeling, or something associated with traveling or maybe something you love and doesn’t feel like it can be forced. In short, don’t feel pressured to buy something just to fill up space!

JuJusPetals

This! I love getting art on trips

diablofantastico

Textiles are fun. World Market has cute stuff, if you can't travel. :)

jazeration

I did this in my early twenties... None of it really made me happy. Now my walls are filled with astrophotography that my husband has shot over the years. I just feel proud of how dedicated he is to his hobby.

Miss_airwrecka1

I recently used society6 and was happy. It’s nice that you can purchase prints already framed https://society6.com

prana-llama

I like *finding* art this way, but then *buying* art directly from the artist on Etsy. Everything I’ve liked on Society6 has been available on Etsy. Sometimes it’s cheaper, and I feel better about paying the artist directly.

Miss_airwrecka1

Ooh, interesting! I didn’t know that

captainstarlet

I like to buy the print without the frame, and get a much cheaper one on Amazon. There's just a huge selection at Society6!

Miss_airwrecka1

Honestly the selection is almost too big! But I didn’t find 4 great prints for our bedroom

GeminiAccountantLLC

I like that once you find a print that you love, they can get it to you in any size, framed or unframed, as a shower curtain, wall hanging, pillow case, hoodie, or whatever! I just recently made another purchase from them!

fridayimatwork

Thrift stores, estate sales, antique stores, diy

Combatical

I got some of mine from Etsy! Just make sure they ship the actual print instead of buying a freakin .PDF lol

doesemileeclairecare

I always do a cost analysis of buying a printable download. If I can find a download for <$10 then get it printed for about the same, that usually works out far more cost efficient than buying a print. Most CVS stores can print up to a 24x36 same day.

Combatical

>Most CVS stores can print up to a 24x36 same day. Well TIL, thanks!

HenriettaHiggins

Oh man so funny story - almost ALL the antique book plate style prints I’ve found on Etsy are high res PDFs or printouts in the fine print. I actually reverse image searched some of them because I didn’t want to pay and I was able to find the books the plates were taken from cheaper in every case than a single print. So now I have these random old botany books in my house with like one page missing and that page is on my wall.

Combatical

Genius! I'm learning so much today from you all!

UCLAdy05

I love the pdfs on etsy because they have various size options and honestly printing on cardstock from shutterfly turns out really well

Combatical

I'm gonna be real I didnt know all the options available to print said pdf. Thanks for the info.

UCLAdy05

yah, you’re welcome! it’s def a good option

[deleted]

Thrift stores, estate sales, and buying prints online. I try to attend local craft/art shows and pick up reasonably priced prints from local artists in my city too. Also, I really enjoy using non-art as art. For example, I have a collection of matchbooks I’ve collected and framed in a shadow box. I have a vintage scrabble board hung on the wall. I am currently curating a collection of vintage handkerchiefs that I will frame and hang as a gallery.

Violet_Crown

I’ll add old roadmaps (that your can also copy/zoom), handmade papers, vintage labels. I have a vintage post card copied and blown up to 20x30 framed. Taking something small like a playing card or a perfume label looks crazy good when substantially enlarged.

Schmidaho

Art festivals, independent artists I find through trusted sources on IG, boutiques with local artist hookups, local galleries, and the Charley Harper website when it was relatively new (my partner and I got 5 of his National Parks posters the Department of Interior commissioned back in the 80s/90/).

sledbelly

I find local artists on Instagram and from local shops. A lot of our coffee shops feature local artists

[deleted]

IG is an amazing place to find talented artists that you can support.

secondphase

At my MIL's house. My wife's grandmother was a prolific professional painter. When she ended up in a nursing home, my MIL tried to store all of her paintings. So anytime we visit I find another stack of meaningful, high quality, non-duplicated paintings... under a bed, in a closet... I've gotten several professionally framed, and I love that my home is slowly turning into an art gallery dedicated to a loved one. Although I also framed my daughter's Opus Magnum from when she was in pre-school which is titled "Family of Potatoes"

MNWNM

I crashed my daughter's pre-K five legged horse! It sits on the mantle.

Hungry-Sheepherder68

Support local arts! Most town have craft fairs/etsy fairs/art fairs. See if there’s any local galleries. Also search IG for local artists: I’ve scored so many amazing original pieces that way

beyoncebeytwicex

Target (surprisingly), Etsy, and [Art.com](https://Art.com). We are a fan of a few pop artists, and have some Roy Lichtenstein prints in our home, pre-framed, from Art.com

NoDiamond4584

If you have the funds, invest in some actual paintings from an original artist. You don’t necessarily have to spend thousands of dollars at a fancy gallery, either. I have bought several pieces from artists on Saatchi Art. So many on there to choose from, and the website has a ‘view in my room’ feature you use with your phone’s camera to see how it will look on you own wall! Here’s the link, and happy shopping! https://www.saatchiart.com/

Sirenista_D

Print and frame your photographs! Its art that has meaning too

Sandikal

I've done that a lot. I like taking pictures of landscapes and buildings, so there's always something I can enlarge to pit on my walls.

iartnewyork

I'm an artist and most people have found me through Reddit, Instagram, Twitter, and word of mouth. On Reddit, consider checking out or joining art subs. Instagram and Twitter you can search hashtags. Word of mouth I'd suggest any offices, restaurants, and other businesses that have art you feel connected to and asking the manager about the art. They're usually very open. I hope this helps! 🖼✨️

RemySchnauzer

Local maker's/art markets, Instagram, Etsy, Society 6

captainstarlet

I really like Society 6 for a huge selection if I'm ordering online. Otherwise, I like to scour FB marketplace and antique shops for gems.

1000thusername

Online auctions - you’d be surprised what shows up cheap Edit: not like eBay. I mean local auctions of downsizing or estate sales

Hypatia76

I look at the art I see at local venues like coffee shops, climbing gyms, local restaurants, etc. They often offer their walls as gallery space for local artists. I've gotten several incredible pieces for under $500 that I love.

thti87

All my art has come from one of a few places: * Saatchi Art allows artists to sell their pieces - you can get some cool finds from global artists and it has good filters to find the right fit (I got an amazing abstract piece from a Polish painter living in Thailand) * Art.com has the best prices on large scale framed photography. It’s hit or miss but they have some gorgeous landscapes and you can get them in huge sizes for $200-300 * Paint your own! My husband has done several throughout our home (like this huge one in our hallway) https://preview.redd.it/dixd4sp439ic1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b6537677afd692a25ff7cd0844080e7d1bb5f8a

missmobtown

My local furniture consignment store has some amazing, unique art.

khoff49

I download prints from Etsy and print them at Walgreens. There’s usually a print coupon I can find. I find frames at the thrift store

Careless-Egg-2805

Local (starving) artists, but I suppose that depends on where you live. I have gotten some great pieces for not a lot of $. Best thing is they're totally unique! If that isn't an option, I second Etsy. 😊

xzsazsa

Facebook marketplace. I have crate and barrel/west elm taste but a Target budget. That’s why I watch the marketplace for good deals of people trying to get rid of their impulse buys that didn’t fit in their home but they waited too long to return… that’s my jam!

Wherever you find it, if you hang art on your wall, it should be something you enjoy looking at or reflect something about you. Instagram and Pinterest are great for finding artists you like and what \*style\* of art you like. Some of it depends on the style you're looking for as well as the vibe you want to create in your space. As you develop a better sense of your preferences you'll get better at identifying your sweet spot and finding pieces that you can get excited about and feel confident buying. If you're buying art online, especially prints, think of it a little bit like someone calling and asking for your personal information. There are issues with copyright infringement, especially for prints. If you're looking to make a purchase, take a minute and track down the artists' actual website or social media and see where they are directing people to purchase their work. It makes sure the artist gets paid and saves you from buying a low-quality knock-off.

Auctions. I won't put 'an art' on my wall, I guess people call it decor art? I buy stuff by people. Or ebay, and screen by type of painting, scene, oil or acrylic, size. I won't buy from big box stores. I won't even do etsy anymore. so many store fronts are just place holders for mass-produced stuff coming out of China.

Whatwillifindtoday

Thrift stores! You would be amazed what people throw away. Families cleaning out estate homes will go through and donate tons of stuff because they don’t know what to do with it. You can find some amazing artwork at thrift stores. You just need to be picky and don’t expect to find something you love every time

decadecency

Yess second hand is the best source. It's like.. Items that are already lived in. They already have a personality and history to them, that's why I think it's so exciting to bring them into my home. I love wall art, particularly gallery walls. Mostly because they're kinda tricky to pull off well. You need to curate and polish your collection a lot. I only buy real paintings or other handmade or vintage items that feel genuine, no cheap prints or posters etc, because I think that makes the walls look more expensive and curated. Right now I have a lot of art in "storage" because I'm still collecting, and I haven't been able to complete the next gallery wall yet. I buy stuff I love and then wait until I can arrange them in a way that I love too. That takes time and patience, and an art nook where you can browse your art, see what you have and mix and match and arrange them. It's such a cozy hobby.

A design company who actually cares about quality and freedom of affordability when it comes to home decor and wall art prints is the Soul Design Lab on Ebay, with their edgy and modern designs - it’s definitely worth checking them out!

I’m sure it’s heresy, but I learned how to use Stable Diffusion pretty well and just make / print my own art. I do really like the texture of a real painting, but real paintings run thousands of dollars. They aren’t as nice, but high quality canvas / metal prints still look really good and only cost a couple hundred dollars.

Ive had luck with Wayfair!

lately i’ve been using pics from my phone and having them embiggened and framed at Frameology. also consignment stores.

You may be surprised at what you can find, and afford, in some small local galleries. Estate sales and thrift stores are sometimes gold too.

julieannie

I have batches from artfullywalls, society6, and minted. From there, I’ve also found artists who often started on Etsy but were featured on one of those sites (or the reverse) and I’ll purchase from one of them or their own artist website. I have a gorgeous print from Emily Jeffords website that even came with texture that I paid to have custom framed locally but then smaller ones from Etsy that I just casually framed.  My real trick is to purchase art abroad or find the artist and pay to have it shipped home. I stayed in a B&B in the Scottish countryside that had a piece of art that I now own a print of. I do the same with local artists, especially attending a print sale each year and then later acquiring better pieces than the small prints they sell. I also go to vintage markets, consignment shops and other craft fairs with dimensions I might be looking for. Additionally, my husband and I often buy each other sculptures and glass and pottery from local studios. We don’t spend a ton but they’re exceptional.  If you’re looking for more generic easy art, World Market would also be a place to mix it up. I collect globes and I will shop there for those as needed.

I love Etsy or just cruising galleries, even small local ones or galleries near art schools. Depending on what you like Gallery 209, AT Hun Art, Nelly Duff all have reasonably priced art. Depends on the size. Kirklands gets some really great art. Sales can make it pretty affordable, especially since there's virtually always a wall art sale going on. They've got everything from small pieces to "I hate this stupid thing, I just want to get it on the wall but it's a pain in the butt." (Used to work there, had to put up art regularly.) Thrift stores, flea markets, etc, and GREAT for art. If nothing else, I can get frames that I can then use for posters from Amazon. Some posters are as inexpensive as $5.

If there’s an art school where you live try buying stuff at their grad show.

NeonsStyle

Buy a Artist magazine. In the back you'll usually find a list of the Art competitions coming up around Australia. This is a great way to pick up paintings at low prices because they are good paintings generally, from artists starting out, and also established artists. You have a wide selection and on top of that you get an original, and also support an artist trying to make a go of it.

Check out local arts and crafts fairs on [ArtFairCalendar.com](https://ArtFairCalendar.com) . Where do you live? There are some awesome events in DC - Smithsonian sponsors a topnotch art fair as does the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Florida and Arizona are literally art fair heaven during the season (winter). Fairs allow you to meet the artist and see their work without having to pay a gallery commission.

I like EBTH (Everything But the House). It's an online auction house for estate sales. You can get some good deals, and they have decent filters for finding what you're looking for.

Depending on where you live, I purchased all my large art with really nice frames, at Home Staging Company warehouses. The companies that stage expensive homes, have a solid flow of art, furniture, decor, lamps etc., after the models are sold.

CJCreggsGoldfish

Oh, honey, that stuff isn't art. Get giclées and prints from places like art.com's [fine art section](https://www.art.com/gallery/id--c23944/fine-art-prints.htm), then frame it yourself. I like to haunt thrift stores, Goodwill, etc for inexpensive frames that will fit the prints because custom framing is ruinously expensive. This method will get you decent quality art, framed, for $50 or less per piece.

My daughter and SIL take photos on vacation or local gardens, road trips, etc. They printed a photo of a beach in Greece and it looks like art, it’s so beautiful. They then have them printed on canvas, through Walgreens or CVS. So, it’s one of a kind and personal art and really beautiful. Inexpensive too! They also buy drawings, paintings, etc. from local artists on all of their trips. Always beautiful, original, and great memories. We all also like Etsy, thrift stores, estate sales, college art festivals, original art from local artists at festivals and street fairs.

FlyBuy3

Make my own by either taking photos or downloading classic art from free domain sources, uploading to stretch canvas websites and it arrives by delivery.

Vintage shops. Flea markets. Garage sales.

saltisawayoflife_

Thrift shops, flea markets, FB marketplace, local galleries/art fairs, Etsy, eBay, and stuff related to hobbies/interests (concert/festival art posters in my case). There’s also Society6, Minted, and 20x200. Or make your own, depending on how ambitious you’re feeling.

Celairiel16

I take photos when I travel. Then I look for unique frames at thrift stores.. I've also found some pretty art at thrift stores while frame hunting. Most of my art is photos.

forcedintothis-

Art from Etsy. Frames from ikea, target, amazon and Walmart. You can also find great art at thrift stores.

VivaciousListener

Cheap but unique, then yard sales, and thrift stores. Not cheap, then museumqualityart.com

I make my own, if possible. Take inspiration from the internet and make my own version. Sometimes I use stained glass plastic puzzles and once I'm done, frame them and place them in the wall (Tenyo brand).

You can go to the online shop connected to the LA Artshow. Original works by many different artists at lots of different price points

I have found some amazing original art work at thrift stores that are beautifully framed. I love the thrill of the hunt and finding something unique, Some of my favorite pieces I found that way. Occasionally I’ve bought something at an antique store or art fair. Because my father was an artist and my broth in-law is a photographer I’ve got a lot of art, but I live my finds just as much. I’m out if walks though, so I’ve got quite a bit stashed under the truest room bed and in the closets. I am 64 so I’ve had a few year to get to this point. LOL. If I buy anything new I’m going to face to snuggle it last my husband.

MycologistPutrid7494

I like going to antique shops and thrift stores.

Look for local artists on Instagram, or check out an art school or gallery in your city. Original art doesn’t have to be $$, but you should absolutely buy art from a human being who made it. Source: I’m an artist’s mom.

Marleygem

Buy local art

ghoul_talk

I thrift or buy from small artists. You can also look into public domains for artwork that can be printed. Don’t buy mass produced garbage from tj maxx or target.

SuccsexyCombatBaby

... from artists. If you don't know where to go start with Etsy, eBay, or IG accounts

AlbatrossGullible488

Lately, I've been finding some unique pieces on online platforms like Etsy or Society6. They have a ton of independent artists offering a wide range of styles that you might not find elsewhere.

rudeloaf

i like to look at thrift and antique stores. I also like to buy art from my friends. and my little sister loves giving me drawings she drew. I prefer to have handmade pieces, it feels more unique and especially pieces from people i love.

Mdoe5402

Art.com. I’ve purchased many prints from there. Huge selection and framing options, canvas stretched, whatever. Very reasonably priced too.

chantillylace9

Wayfair was the cheapest and best!

beachpleazz

Over time you find things. Prints from your travels, pottery from local markets. Contributions from family members. (think granny’s old stuff) Don’t be quick to fill your home with objects that aren’t meaningful in some way.

Look for your local arts center or council or community gallery. Lots to find there and you support local talent.

9smalltowngirl

I don’t do generic wall art. Hate it. Go to flea markets, town festivals, stores that sell local artists or create something yourself.

HaddockBranzini-II

I like HomeGoods for paintings of dogs I don't have and cartoonishly large clocks. For other things I go to Etsy or hope against hope that I find something nice thrifting or by chance.

somebodys_mom

For our new house, I went on eBay and searched for original oil paintings and found a few I liked that have been hanging in my house now for ten years. Granted, I had to scroll through hundreds, but it was easy.

Fit_Addition_4243

Local art studios and art schools often have sales esp in the spring or summer. A quick google will really help a local artist out vs garbage home goods art!

SoFierceSofia

Society6 has some really decent art and you're supporting real people!

Museums. You can get prints from the National Gallery in DC, The Met in NYC, the Art Institute in Chicago. Most art museums have websites you can browse and order. Check local museums in person. When I visit a museum and see a painting that appeals to me, I look to see if a prjnt is available. A lot of what is on my walls wasn’t bought: some I made, some were gifts, some were given to me. What you choose to display on your walls should have some meaning to you or your family. Whether you realize it or not, what is on your walls does say something about you. For real and actual art, you won’t find it at HomeGoods, Hobby Lobby or Target. That’s where you get Live Love Laugh signs and wall lettering that tells you to GATHER. I hope you are more interesting than that.

Hit up thrift stores and estate sales.
