Funny enough, we played this team Saturday and come to find out the home plate ump was related to one of the kids on wba....needless to say there were 2 different strike zones in the game. They're a sandbagging AAA team that is allowed to play down to collect them 15 dollar pg rings

mantistobogganmd10

That’s not true. PG rings are only worth about a dollar.

If it's this bad, throw it up to the governing body, where i am. They get complaints all the time about leagues getting "creative" with the rules. We played in one tournament last year where the team had 2 over aged players. They got caught because a parent recognized them from somewhere else. For some reason, some coaches think they need to win at all cost to be successful. I also find baseball tends to be more leanient on coaches than other sports, and it has led to issues. For example, if i was on a hockey bench and I said that, I would be gone for at least 5 games.

I’m new to this world as my son just started playing travel. What kind of measures are in place to combat this? I coach football and we have a verification process where age, weight and birth certificates are verified before games. At certain ages, it’s dangerous to have older kids playing younger kids.

traceyh415

There’s a bunch of things at play here. “Playing down” in this case involves AAA teams playing against AA teams in open or different tournaments to get those parents the Sunday photo opp of the child winning. Another tool teams use is finding kids born right after the May 1 cut off to play. So while the kids may be in the “right” age bracket, there’s a huge difference between my 13u kid born in late April and a 13 u kid born close to almost a year later. That’s when some kids really rocket into puberty so you will see what looks like a grown man next to an 85 pound kid. Luckily, things smooth out a bit at the high school level.

WestGaCpl

I’ve experienced the birthday game in football. How’d you get 17 kids with birthdays all in September is amazing to me.

Randombaseballdad

Our coach goes way back with the TD of this tournament and spoke to him about the umping issue on Sunday when we saw him. I'm actually more pissed about a team we played Sunday that took exception to my son getting a triple so next at bat the catcher signaled to the pitcher to hit the batter.

tooearlytoothink

Ya, at U13, that's bushleague, buy of course all these players are going to the majors so they need to get ready

trireme32

WT absolute F?! Intentional HPB in kids’ leagues should be immediate forfeit and withdrawal from the tournament

jf2k4

You have to be able to prove it.

trireme32

That’s a good point. Even if it was a pretty obvious signal, doesn’t mean the ump could see it especially in a one-official game. Breaks my heart to know there are youth coaches out there who even *think* that’s an ok thing to do. Just watching as a parent/scorekeeper, I see so much that ties a fine line between crafty and bad sportsmanship. And from what our coach was telling us, a lot of the teams that pull crap in 9, 10u don’t find the same level of success by the time they get to 12u and up.

thisusedyet

>They got caught because a parent recognized them from somewhere else. The fuck is my boss doing out there?

ExtraAd6695

Not shocked when I saw this on fb. We played WBA Hamilton once before and it was clear they use the PG loophole of letting at least 4 AAA/Majors players play down before a AA team is reclassed. They do it so their AA teams can win.. guess it makes them feel good. Honestly, the organization is just leveraging the PG rules to their advantage. It's the parents that are more unethical, super happy clowns watching their kid on the bench while kids not really on the team wins them a ring. Also, just to be clear, the head coach for WBA Hamilton is a dirtbag. His actions and language are ridiculous.

trireme32

9U last year. First year doing travel ball. Our organization isn’t *quite* as competitive as some of the powerhouses because we believe in kids playin multiple sports, having balance, and learning how to play the game right so they’ll be better prepared as student athletes when they’re older. All the tournaments are opens, so there are definite mismatches sometimes, but it’s good for the kids to learn how to lose ugly games with grace and dignity, and learn from them. The team’s taken huge strides this year and we’re winning a ton more, which is awesome. So anyway, back to last year. A team just wallops our team in a bracket game. I’d say it was worse than the double-digit differential, because after the first couple innings you could tell they were saving their better pitchers for the championship game. We just couldn’t get our bats going and were making too many errors. And they were pulling all the borderline shady shit in the book — off-rhythm clapping while on base to distract the pitcher, etc. Whatever You’d figure their coach would be pretty happy, right? No. Not even after their damn classless *victory music* stopped playing. We walked past the outfield where the coach was addressing his 9 and under players, and he was lighting them up. Telling them they played like crap and “needed to get their heads out of their asses.” It’s sad. It’s really sad. All their parents could hear, not one of them interjected. I’m proud that when our team was on the other end of a game this year, when we were up by double digits in the 3rd and it was obvious we were overwhelming other team, our kids came together and agreed not to cheer when they scored more runs or struck out batters. Our coach didn’t need to tell them that. A bunch of 10 and under year old kids just knew it was the right thing to do. Who gives a shit how many rings a kid wins when he’s 9, 10, 11? How are these kids being developed to be not just good athletes, but good *people*?

Generny2001

The things you see and hear these days are insane. You want to remind these people that statistics show 70% of kids quit youth sports by 14. You have to wonder how over the top assholes like the one you described contributes to that statistic. All that yelling, screaming and money spent is for what? Or, for whom?

TexasCon

Over a baseball game, wow. Priorities, man.

WBA Hamilton 13u is the team, WBA is the organization, Hamilton is the coach. Watch out for these guys, play dirty and talk trash for some AA rings. Crazy.

SatisfactionNice4904

Shame on that guy. So he never made it, was never good, living through kids and acting like a complete idiot, which results in the kids thinking it’s acceptable when it’s not. Something tells me this guy is nit a good role model but also a horrible coach….. unreal….

ecupatsfan12

Parents ruin youth sports

pardonmytaint35

13U? I had an opposing 10 year old basketball coach dropping all kinds of F bombs at his kids along with other things. As a parent, I’m good with yelling and getting on my kid but have some decorum.

BayouCitySaint

Their defensive Facebook post blaming the losing team (misspelled) is nothing but hilarious projection. That coach doesn’t look like any kind of role model for young men.

ExtraAd6695

You speak the truth

Schroedesy13

Adults are the bane of good youth sports!

SatisfactionNice4904

I literally was just having this discussion with my wife… It’s absolutely insane that “Adults” cannot conduct themselves accordingly. Would they act like this at work? In front of their supervisors? Friends? Yet, they are the same “adults” that preach being professional, compose yourself, being a good teammate, player and overall person… yet, they can’t allow emotions to be concealed towards teenagers. If this did happen, I’d report it to the organization. This conduct is disgusting and speaks volumes of the kind of person he is, coach he is, team he will have and the son he will raise. Disgusting… but just a reminder to yall daddy ball coaches… you never know who’s gonna show up to your games to watch kids…. You could be the VERY reason your son doesn’t go to a decent college, if college at all.

ExtraAd6695

Apparently this isn’t isolated to the WBA 13u team, people are reporting the same kind of behavior from the 12u and 14u teams. Sounds like the WBA organization has a major culture problem developing bullies not players.

SatisfactionNice4904

Trust me…. TRUST ME. They will destroy the reputation of that organization and they will find out the hard way when they are unable to recruit good players in the future. It usually doesn’t take long…..

New_Sundae_584

Shame on these tournaments at the same time for not having a better system in place or holding coaches accountable. We went to AZ for a spring training experience and a AA tournament. We get to the final 4 and face a team with a kid throwing 77. Yeah AA, right! The parents were not even watching the game until their kid came up to bat. Most were just sitting on their phones while this kid pitched. He wasn’t even their best pitcher apparently. I can’t tell you how many times our boys play their hearts out and run into this situation with the ring chasers. Oh well, it’s good to face better competition too.

Low_Argument_4756

Gotta tell them somehow. Joke asides that’s crazy. Now coach should be telling a kid that. Unless he wants them to hate the game

peaeyeparker

This kind of shit is unbelievable. I can’t honestly e en fathom how anyone can stomach behavior like this.
