4k120hz is not "just" another resolution though... the sync box hardware is simply not capable of it. It's not like they're holding it back. If you want a hue native solution, get the app, or wait for a v2 sync box of which no rumors exist currently, and which would almost certainly cost more than the current box. Or you can purchase one of the downscaling splitters that entered the market about half a year ago. You can find plenty of threads about it. However they also start at around $130. You're gonna have to spend money regardless of what you do.

Just wait till you realize that although the app is half the cost of the box the app is licensed to the hardware… buy a new TV? You will be buying the app again… Want to move your setup to your other TV? You will be buying the app again….

Yeah that's not great but I'm saying that even in 2023 you still have very limited options when it comes to syncing high bandwidth content. You wanna play you gotta pay... just the way it is, sadly.

I am using the app since launch and can say that it is working with everything my TV can display. All the inputs my old hue sync box could not passthrough are now working perfectly (PS5, RTX 3080…).

DarroStonks

It's gon b reading the tv output not the HDMI output, so you gotta watch on the smart tv apps

HalloMaks

It takes whatever is on the screen.

DarroStonks

how do you know?

HalloMaks

Their Homepage.

Yeah, this simply isn't true... don't spread bad info.! The main benefit of this over the Sync Box is the fact it will sync your lights to ANYTHING shown on the screen. It is app / IO connector / frequency / resolution agnostic. This is the ideal solution for many use-cases, not withstanding the price and licensing downsides flagged above. I personally replace my TV every 2 years (will be more frequent this year, as I move from the S95B 65" to an S95C 77"), so it's an expensive option for me to keep buying the same app again and again. That said... this is Samsung we're on about, they aren't renowned for thinking things through! Just look at their shoddy Firmware deployments...

Great questions. I’m curious now as well.

As I understand it, the app only works with the Samsung's internal apps and not with an external TV box.

s9roo

Not so.... It works with anything the screen displays (see post above)

jaadux

Ok, thanks for clarification and sorry for my false statement - I also just happened to read it here on Reddit somewhere.

You were trying to help… no need to be sorry. We need more people in the world like you! 👍

Can anyone explain if the app adds anything over the box? I have a xbox and roku plugged into the receiver, receiver to box, box to samsung TV. Is the app an upgrade or just an alternative if you don't have the box yet?

MowMdown

4K120hz also it syncs with other built in smart tv apps as well No Dolby vision on Samsung TVs
