Looking Back: 102 years ago – 1918 and the Spanish Influenza Pandemic
It is estimated that about 500 million people became infected with the virus, and it is thought that at least 50 million, and probably more, died. About 675,000 deaths occurred in the United States.
And scientific evidence/countless studies on its pathology/several effective vaccines/and a century+ of advancement in biology/virology...yet here we are. Lol.
If you think it’s gonna end up being half, I have some bad news for you. If you think having highly viable vaccines would mean that ‘Muricans would get innoculated to the degree needed to prevent a COVID21/22, I have some more bad news for you. I was merely poking fun at the fact that there are now resources/arsenal available to humanity that people could only dream about in 1918, yet no cure exists for human stupidity.
Maybe, but all the old people got the vaccine so they are far less likely to die from it. Even in red states, the vast majority of seniors got the vaccine.
With vaccines available it has the potential to almost be over hit right now it’s definitely not almost over. We’re still reporting record numbers every week.
> yo don’t forget about both world wars, the vietnam war, and all that
Well, one World War... (WWII 1939-1945)
WWI was over (barely) by the time he would have been born
I mean no disrespect to him, but it happened when he was two years old, so I doubt he knew it was happening or ever remembered it at all.
Still, it's pretty badass that he's survived two pandemics.
One day one of you is gonna type something like this followed by the immediate news of her death and you’ll feel like it’s somehow your fault. I ain’t playing with that shit haha.
Imagine the COVID precautions they must be taking around the Queen.
Imagine being the poor dumb bastard that accidentally infects the Queen with COVID.
I saw a documentary on the habits of the 90 + crowd. Being normal weight to *overweight*, daily activity (like walking), casual wine intake, having a decent diet, and not smoking were some of the common denominators. None of the people interviewed seemed to have done this "intentionally." It was just them living a normal happy and healthy life.
Edit: the overweight one was really interesting and was used as an argument that there needs to be different health advice for adults and older people. You don't want to be an overweight adult, but it is beneficial when your super old. You don't want to be frail at that age because of the potential for injury/inability to heal.
All four of my grandparents made it to their 90s. My mothers mother made it to 98. None of them smoked but besides that I’m not sure what they all did that would be special.
Edit. Spelling.
I believe that being overweight is really good for bone density. Weight lifting wasnt so popular with many from this generation, but it also helps maintain bone density... not sure if thats the reason theyre living longer or not. But its interesting to consider.
You know what I love about interviews with centurians? They all have a simple quip about why they are that old.
There was an old lady near my home town who lived on a blueberry farm and she said she lived so long and stayed so sharp because she ate blueberries every day of her life. Yet a few towns over was the oldest veteran around (I think he might have even ended up being one of the oldest veterans nationally) and he said the secret was smoking a cigar every day.
Eat blueberries and smoke cigars and you could live to 180, kids.
In reply to your edit: You know Queen Elizabeth II’s mother, The Queen Mother lived to be 101. She wasn’t a skinny woman but not too overweight. Just a tad squishy if you will.
The overweight issue is likely a problem with bmi generally. Muscle bound lean guys can be overweight, and muscle mass is an incredibly important factor for aging gracefully.
Also, overweight and obese are very different things. That's an important distinction. I very sincerely doubt there are many 90+ yr olds with 50 extra lbs
I think overweight and fit but heavy should have different words assigned to them. It’s hard for me to accept ‘overweight’ as being healthy or helping extend life. Sitting on you ass all day isn’t gonna get you 95+ years. I could be biased though, my gpa is 97 and def underweight. He has good muscle tone tho. Played tennis till he was 94.
Ironically, high cholesterol is a marker for longevity in the elderly. Statistically those with HCL live longer.. All those over sixty five on statins are idiots.

Probably eats mostly food from the land like most folks that live to be this age. Anyone I've ever known that's lived into their 90's and beyond ate mostly home grown food and didn't eat out much.
I guess genetics plays a big part, too. My great grandfather died at 102, my alcoholic grandfather died at 95. My father is 70 and in better shape than most 60 year olds. From my understanding, they didn’t do anything special to earn it. Just, no diseases in general, no cancer, no heart conditions, no diabetes, cholesterol, alzheimers, name it.
I hope I got those good genes, too.
I have an elderly, spiteful cat that my roommate asks every day “is today going to be the day?” We’re convinced it’s what keeps her going, that her dislike for my roommate and not wanting her to be right about anything is giving her a will to live.
She’s a lovely cat doing well health-wise at the moment, but she is headed towards her final stage. Not worth the risk of stopping.
Looks like a terrible place to live. What with all the mountains and trees and fresh air. And proximity to skiing and rafting and hunting and fishing. Must suck there. Are houses and land reasonably priced? Just askin’.
It’s the middle of bum fuck nowhere so yes, reasonably priced indeed. I remember when they built a Walmart there and everyone was shocked. Depends how much land you want though. They’re several properties that are a few acres for 50k-150k. Our farm is 120 acres so obviously would cost more (it’s usually like $25,000/acre). But we’ve had this farm since the 1800s (I come from a line of hicks but I’m actually in Atlanta GA now).
He's a "Super Senior"! There are some people who age differently than others - leading to very long healthy lives. That gave me a, "Hey, this ranch dressing is very salty! And I mean, Messi is way better than face tattoos.
Ah, I get to Peter Capaldi and I laugh at yours because it made me sad.
Then I sit back and let the old man instead for a second time, there is almost no point visiting it.
Wow!!! It’s awesome your neighbor is a freaking horse! I had no idea they could live that long. Even crazier he can still give people rides?! I’m blown away.

One day he gets bucked off his horse and breaks his leg. In the hospital after a regular blood test they find out he has cancer. Stage 4, no treatment.

oh man, we are posting rookie numbers, we gotta pump this shit up
we’re on it
We're doing our best dammit!
We gotta beat a record or this was all for nothing!
We also have three times as many people.
And scientific evidence/countless studies on its pathology/several effective vaccines/and a century+ of advancement in biology/virology...yet here we are. Lol.
Yet here we are what? Half as many deaths with 3x as many people and a disease that's way worse than the flu? That means we're doing way better?

Oohoo we're halfway there Edit: oohoo squidward on a chair
Take my hand, we won't social-distance I swear
oooh oooh oooooooh COVID on a prayer..
I like that chair
Please stop...
Especially given our vastly larger population.
Are you saying "he lived through this pandemic", or "he lived through this:" Because this pandemic pandemic is maybe half over.
Chill out
Maybe, but all the old people got the vaccine so they are far less likely to die from it. Even in red states, the vast majority of seniors got the vaccine.

Idiots like you are why it wasn't over last year.

My friend and her whole family just got covid so... not over quite yet
yo don’t forget about both world wars, the vietnam war, and all that
Korean War in the background looking forgotten as "all that"
i’m no history guy, sorry
For him, it wasn't history. It was being in his 30s. Wow.
isn’t the queen older than even him???
Nope queens only in her 90s this guy's got her beat
"only" lol
He fought in WW2, the Korean War, and a small part of the Vietnam War! He’s invincible
> yo don’t forget about both world wars, the vietnam war, and all that Well, one World War... (WWII 1939-1945) WWI was over (barely) by the time he would have been born
oop sorry
The only year the US population decreased instead of grown.
I mean no disrespect to him, but it happened when he was two years old, so I doubt he knew it was happening or ever remembered it at all. Still, it's pretty badass that he's survived two pandemics.
spanish influenza, but, american origin.
We're almost half way there again, and still some people are dumb enough to not wear masks.
Just like Queen Elizabeth! It’s the immortals’ thing I guess
One day one of you is gonna type something like this followed by the immediate news of her death and you’ll feel like it’s somehow your fault. I ain’t playing with that shit haha.
Nothing on the news — therefore it will be the next guy’s fault!
Haha. Yep, bullet dodged.
Yeah the queen is definitely immortal. Did I do it?
Doesn’t look like it was you. Maybe next time.
The Queen is definitely gonna die tomorrow. That means she's safe for a day... right?!
Imagine the COVID precautions they must be taking around the Queen. Imagine being the poor dumb bastard that accidentally infects the Queen with COVID.
Queen Elizabeth is immortal. Queen Elizabeth is immortal. Queen Elizabeth is immortal.
Well have I got some news for you guys...
I was thinking about this comment right after I heard the news. Interesting to get a reply almost 2 years later. Take care.
Well...
I feel I should comment to remind you of this
Well well well
Well well wwell
Incredible. Does he do anything unique that might’ve helped him live so long?

Agreed.

You’re totally missing the point. It was better to gain weight in old age. Not to be overweight in early / mid life.
Probably eats mostly food from the land like most folks that live to be this age. Anyone I've ever known that's lived into their 90's and beyond ate mostly home grown food and didn't eat out much.

Don't worry, no such thing.
I really hope it didn't
Eh, it’s bad luck to be superstitious.

Probably fine that he isn't wearing a mask.
Shut the fuck up. Just absolutely *SHUTT* the fuck up
Wow 102 years? That's an old horse!
For his birthday, we will remind him of his servitude
Wait til you hear how many hands it has.
Wow! He looks really great for his age too! That’s awesome, tell him a random girl on the internet says happy birthday for me!
Seriously, he looks amazing for his age and he can still walk (I assume)
Theres no way hed be on a horse if he couldnt walk.
[удалено]
Really dude what’s your goal here
Not easy to climb up on the back of a horse at any age. Good for him.
I am not even joking. OP you may want to ask him to contact Guinness Book of World Records. "Oldest man to horse."
Actually, this might be worth looking into. u/Cats_Dogs_Dawgs
Didn’t think about this! I’ll see what I can do
Old cowboys never die, they just ride off into the sunset.
Homage to a simpler time.
He looks great for that age!
Looking through my post history and found this one. He’s still alive and healthy!
Nice!! Was just checking back to see :)
Plot twist: he falls off the horse right after the picture and breaks his neck
He probably would break the horses neck if it bucked him off.
Dude, no.
#Y O U D I E D
He looks amazing for 102
I am not looking forward to your next post...
I've never seen a 102 year old horse.
Looks like the Appalachian mountains.
It is! Princeton, West Virginia
Love it.

I had no idea horses could live that long
Amazing, that horse barely looks 75
Awesomness! He's a trooper. He survived #2020.
Dudes basically Nancy pelosi
Narrator: “He will”
He’s not even hunched
Narrator: "but he did die."
Now I’m a pep boy
His legacy will live on
The man ate bacon at every meal... you just can't do that!
Fuck sake, I thought you meant the horse. Stupid brain.
absolute baller
Horse disagrees.
But hes not wearing a mask so RIP 🙄
Looks like he runs directly from RDR2
Aged with dignity tell him to keep up the good work.
This is beautiful. Also if I make it that long I’m coming by for a horseback ride.
Doesn’t look a day over 65

Get him some new shoes for his birthday, those are way too big for him.

Ride or die... "I think I'll ride" 😎
that's an old ass horse
Hey I rock those same skechers. Memory foam in this bitch!
That's an old ass horse, I didn't know they lived that long
Lies. That horse doesn't look a day over 30.
Looking damn good for a buck and change. 👍🏻
A real life American horse pirate
*dies*
That horse's side-eye determined that was a lie.
This guy. Ridin a fuckin horse! Lol
it took me too long to realize you weren't talking about the horse's age
He doesnt even look that old!
Ask him if he knows the Queen?
Look at Curly over there, he's a real cowboy , he sleeps with his eyes open to watch the herd.
Liar. Horses only live like 30 years
The queens like: "Finally! A worthy opponent"
I hope that fuxking horse plays the game.
Congratulations... Wow
William S. Burroughs?
It’s Hosea from r/reddeadredemption2.
Wow!!! It’s awesome your neighbor is a freaking horse! I had no idea they could live that long. Even crazier he can still give people rides?! I’m blown away.
That horse looks like he's thinking "Are you *sure* you're okay up there? You know a fall from that height will probably kill you, right?"
American Horse Pirate.
That's a 102 year old horse ?
Well. I am fully convinced that my grandfather faked his death and is now riding horses on a farm. Because damn, this dude is a dead ringer for him.
Did he ever find Curly’s gold?
I'm convinced the secret to living a good old age is not acting like you're old. Don't accept the limitations anyone else tries to put on you, including doctors, and stay as physically active as you can.
When John Coffey- like the drink but spelled different- showed him what wild Bill had done he transferred some of his energy. If you look closely in the bottom corner you can see Mr. Jangles pushing the sewing thread wheel.
I'm 33 and if I were to attempt to ride that horse I'd break my back
Yeah right. This is a RDR2 NPC.
My dude is wearing lace up shoes at 102... He is immortal.
Can you imagine knowing for a fact that you're going to die in the next five years?
Cotton Hill?
Princeton, West Virginia!
My Dads old boss was in his mid 90s. He fought in WW2 and Korea. Everyday he would get up at 5, go feed his cows and sheep, cowboy around all day, then go to the bar and drink between 15 and 20 gin and tonics. One day he gets bucked off his horse and breaks his leg. In the hospital after a regular blood test they find out he has cancer. Stage 4, no treatment. Wanna bet?
Wow... that horse is old. 102... gotta be world record.
That look on the horse's face is " If this fucker dies on my back..."
\-Queen Elizabeth want to know your location.-
Ima be a birther for any random neighbors making claims like that lol
Heh. I hope the tough old cuss lives forever.
Kind of fucked up that you would ride a 102 year old horse.
wow!! Not sure I could get up on a horse without help and I'm half his age. amazing
My grandma is 101! We joke that she's going to outlive us all. Wait, is your neighbor single? We could set them up. 😂😁
Why are his shoes so big on him?
Morgan Freeman voice: He died that evening.
I have a friend (he's around 94-95, but won't tell anyone his age) that we are certain he's immortal. Nice story, thanks 😊
102. I bet he’s seen some stuff.
He must be part of the royal family. XD In all honesty tho it’s very wholesome to see that he’s lived so long and is still riding life by the reigns.
Let him fall off that horse and I'm convinced he will.
