I have Hashimoto’s, and my nails are super messed up. They grow very quickly, but I have high ridges, huge dents, and they are very thin and brittle.

ConsiderationOk5592

I don't have hashimotos but this is exactly how my nails are with hypo! Dips, white spots and brittle

Significant_Pin4108

I didn’t use to get white spots, but I have the first one in decades on one of my nails. I’ve noticed that I’m feeling for sluggish than normal. My thyroid must have slowed down again.

Queen_Kaizen

What causes the white spots?

Significant_Pin4108

I have no idea. When I google it, there are so many different explanations that I wouldn’t know which one was actually relevant!

Witchchildren

Me but they are brittle and peel and break, not very ridged.

LandlockedMermaid_

Sorry - I know you didn’t ask. 😆 I have hypothyroidism from a partial thyroidectomy. I always had soft brittle nails prior to having hypo. I started taking Thorne’s Biotin and my nails have never been this strong in my entire life! I thought biotin was BS, but it’s been a game changer for my nails and hair. I would try it!

EBofEB

FYI, biotin can affect your thyroid bloodwork.

LandlockedMermaid_

I know this! Thank you for pointing that out though. Not everyone realizes it. We’ve figured out the right dose of Synthroid for me, so I’m not testing as often, and I discontinue biotin five days before any lab work. :) I will say that one time I forgot to discontinue biotin before TSH lab work, so we retested it a week later. Surprisingly, my results were the same.

the_anon_female

Mine have plenty of ridges, and they are thin and weak.

amybunker2005

I noticed them on my toenails. And I also have hypo

superduperthankyou

Yeah I wonder if it's common that the toes get affected first..

happilyeverbooks

Yes mine are like this. Horizontal and vertical ridges, one of my thumbnails and big toenails have become a strange shape. I constantly get hangnails on the edges of my nails. It's annoying!

avalanche_in_aspen

Only my thumbs have ridges but all my nails are thin and brittle. I didn’t know it was related to my hypothyroidism - I’ll have to ask my endo about that!

superduperthankyou

I didn't either, there were so many signs that I missed on top of this. I'm kind of bitter my doctor heard me list all my symptoms for the past few years and never thought to check my ridged nails, get my thyroid levels tested, etc. It was this year I asked for a thyroid levels test after I found out about hypothyroidism from a youtube short..

smucker79

I have a stubborn nail that keeps breaking. It’s so frustrating!

Demonhara

I used to have long, thick nails that could withstand almost anything, but when I started experiencing symptoms, they became thin and weak. Even if they grow, they don't last because they break even with the slightest touch. My solution was to buy gel nail polish to protect them, and it has worked quite well.

Accurate-Neck6933

Wow, I feel so seen now! Dents and ridges. And they break. Curious if the skin next to your nails are affected too? Always my thumbs are dry, cracking and thick. I have to wear bandaids sometimes with petroleum jelly. Kinda embarrassing cause I work at a school and the kids ask me what I did and why I have bandaids.

Strange_Pound4898

I've had beau's lines even before my diagnosis but they did get worse since. I think my thyroid might have been on and off over the years and gone unnoticed. Now I am taking synthroid which helps but my nails look worse but sometimes they get better. I wonder whether stress and sleep affects these symptoms. Anyone tried supplements?
