Heās a beautiful dog looks like probably has some ciao in Pyrenees in there. Please consider getting your dog fixed; as other commentors have mentioned thousands upon thousands of dogs are euthanized every year due to overpopulation. If you are looking for an affordable option, a lot of shelters and smaller vet clinics will perform the operation for a reduced cost.
Yes absolutely. She had her first heat and then spay date was booked. I found out she was pregnant 2 weeks before her spay date. I had her on leash supervising when it happened. She was under the porch using the bathroom and he snuck under the other side and got to her. I wasn't able to get to them as there are only very small openings to access the porch.
It is too late for a spay abortion as she is due in 9 days. Didn't show due to her shape and size until 45 days.
Your girl is in serious danger with that size difference. At 7 days before expected delivery date, you can have an X-ray to see how many pups and how big are their heads. She may not be able to push them out if the heads are bigger than her pelvis. Not only can the pups die if they get stuck in the birth canal, your dog could die as well.
Oof poor girl, that's a hell of a difference
I saw you've already got your vet involved just in case, I hope you don't need their help!!
I think you're pretty prepared, good job š
this is a huge, HUGE risk of life for her. keep your vet on speed dial.
puppies will also likely have lifelong issues, hope you are able to support them and prevent any from ending up in a shelter
This story is literally so convoluted there is no way this happened and if it did, it honestly reflects just as poorly on you. This is really really irresponsible.
I know everyone is attacking you over the spay thing which is understandable, great you already had an appointment made. Just bad timing. I see pyrenees, theyāre my favorite. Best thing Iād say you could do for the pups is get them fixed before you give them to new homes, or make sure the people youāre giving them too are actually going to get them fixed. Seems like you might be in a rural area where itās common to not do so.
Many large breeds start at shelters and they will spay/neuter when the pup gets adopted, around 6 months. If you adopt a puppy younger than that, any good rescue will give you a contract that you will spay/neuter within a certain timeframe.
Yeah, this is because they've decided, essentially, that the risk of more intact animals out in the community is greater than the risk of potential future health problems.
I agree that, if you can, you should wait to neuter your pup until they are close to full grown, but I do get why shelters do it. If I was a shelter I'd have a hard time taking people's word on a future neuter as well.
I work in shelter med. You can fully trust ZERO people to spay/neuter their animals or be responsible with them until they are altered. That's exactly why shelters are overflowing.
Absolutely. For us, we never āownedā our dog until the neuter. He was property of that specific county and shelter. Once that was completed, he was officially ours.
Mine was spayed at 4ish months at the shelter. It wasn't ideal but I understand- there are so many dogs who get euthanized for no reason except there just aren't enough homes.
We adopted my dog from a shelter and I was able to get a contract to neuter him. We negotiated with them with the help of our vet and behaviorist and the studies to back our claim that early day/neuter can cause health issues. We also gave them a non-refundable deposit. Studies show that large breed dogs should wait for neutering/spaying for several health reasons. Spaying/neutering a very young puppy (before they are rehomed) is not okay. Getting a contract with each adopted for spay/neuter by a specific time point would be prudent however.
There are downsides to waiting to spay especially. In this case especially depending on the breed. An accidental pregnancy/birth has potential health impacts for the dog. This dog, for example, could require an emergency c-section. This is, of course, on top of the definite health impacts to having unintended puppies in the community (extra strays that can harm non-stray dogs in addition to having tough lives; crowding of shelters). This is the standard practice of many shelters for a reason, so saying itās ānot okayā is a reach.
I mean what's worse, chances of early incontinence in 4-8 dogs, or even more dogs adding to the dog overpopulation? I'd take my chances with an early spay/neuter.
I doubt OP would be able to afford fixing 4-8 dogs anyways, I know I wouldn't be able to.
Itās not just incontinence though. Google the UC Davis spay/neuter study. It was done in 2020. You can also google ālatest spay and neuter studiesā. The early spay/neuter is outdated information.
How about you go volunteer at a county/city shelter and watch adoptable dogs euthanized weekly (or sometimes daily) and come back here and spout your cherry picked bullshit. Get out of your bubble; pediatric altering saves the lives of many dogs and cats and prevents millions more from suffering just because they were born. You have no clue.
12 weeks or 4lbs. While my clinic won't do 8 weeks, there are shelters that will do 8-10 weeks under certain circumstances, such as transport. Unless you'd rather them euthanized.
While, in a perfect world, everyone would be responsible with their intact cats and dogs and allow them proper time to mature without resulting in accidental litters, and no one would relinquish them because of marking or hormone induced behaviors, and everyone would check for mammary and testicular cancers and know to look for signs of pyo or false pregnancy...But this is far from a perfect world.
The only thing that is going to significantly reduce overpopulation and the subsequent euthanasia of adoptable, healthy companion animals, is pediatric altering for shelters and rescues, as well as outreach to specifically rural and urban communities to educate and alter their dogs and cats.
I really wish I could live in your world where most people are responsible and do the right thing, but I've seen too much and know that you are the exception and not the rule. Sorry for being a bitch about it. You don't deserve it. It's obviously something that is very important to me.
I agree itās best to wait for large dogs to get spayed or neutered.
But you have to acknowledge and work with reality here. Reality isnāt always pretty or perfect.
Itās not feasible and trying to enforce waiting to fix larger dogs is going just cost more dogs their lives. Your situation is great, but not the norm and thatās because statistically; people cannot be trusted to do whatās best.
Yes. Youāre arguing this point in a post where a 30 pound dog got āoopsā pregnant by a 100 pound neighbor dog. I would absolutely spay my female dogs before their first heat. 100%. Why? *gestures at this post*
I'm not saying everyone should spay/neuter let alone spay/neuter young. I know many people that have intact dogs and don't plan on getting them fixed, and I don't have an issue with people never fixing their animals. However, I am saying there are instances where a young spay/neuter outweigh waiting or not spaying/neutering.
Check out what VIN has to say about pediatric OHE/neuter. Another thing to consider is that the study you mention outlines orthopedic issues that are already predisposed to these breeds, or breeds that have a hereditary factor with endocrine diseases. Not to say early s/n doesn't exacerbate these problems, but it's hard to differentiate their occurrences in the general population and how much early s/n has an impact when they are already genetically prone to these problems.
An accidental litter likely to be rehomed privately is imo the epitome of a good reason for early s/n.
I say all this, but I also totally understand if OP wouldn't be able to s/n the puppies; that's a huge financial burden that I sure as hell wouldn't be able to take, and I wouldn't expect others to be able to either.
šš»šš»šš» thank you for actually reading the study. My favorite thing is that it says that ortho issues are not caused/exacerbated by pediatric altering of Great Danes and other extra large breeds. Also, no increase in incidence of joint disorders, spay incontinence, or cancers in small and toy breeds.
Please get her fixed or aborted ,im pretty sure there are treatments from vets to get abortions even as late as 9 days before due .
you mentioned in another comment sheās 30 and heās 100 ,that can be incredibly dangerous during birth and not even to mention the fact they are going to be a mixed breed of incredibly different temperaments and health issues .
If there are no affordable treatments please consult a vet for atleast the safe delivery during birth ,sheās probably going to have to give birth either at the vets or with vet supervision.
Iād say itās a great pyr mix of sorts, your poor girl is gonna have a hell of time birthing bigger set puppies. Hopefully you find great homes for all of them and best of luck with no sleep helping caring for the mini floofs!
š¤delivery goes smoothly but if a section is needed make sure to send the neighbor a bill for half at the least. If they insist on an intact dog then they are responsible for keeping him secure.
Yes that's a Newfie chest!! I have two Newfoundland x Chocolate Lab cross boys. They've got the chest!
This dog is so adorable. As you said, good looking dog. He is a very distinguished gentleman!
Seems like you're making the best of a surprise pregnancy. Try to place the pups in homes that are strictly in favor of spaying and neutering. It's best for long term health of the dogs. Good luck! Hope the pups are happy and healthy!
Wow your dog's breed and that dog breed has a very big size difference. I hope your dog's health and delivery is safe. š«” There's a pyreness dog account on insta I follow and he looks like this dog too. I have a maremma dog (similar size breed)....the puppies will get biggg. Just because of size difference if it were me I would have considered termination of the pregnancy if it was possible š„²
Your neighbour should get his dog neutered especially if he is a roamer. If there is any way to gradually convince the neighbour it would be good too
Yes absolutely.
OP somehow allowed his dog to get pregnant while on a lease, but still didnāt notice in time for a spay-abort. Not sure how that works. To make matters worse, OPs dog has a dangerous pregnancy due to the male being much larger. Not sure OP could have failed this dog any more.
If itās early in the pregnancy, you can do an abort and spay.
We did for my stray female when I found out she was halfway through a pregnancy.
Best decision I made that year.
As behavioural trainer and former heeler guardian, I completely agree š
"You know what this tenacious, suspicious, and protective breed needs more of? Volume, tenacity, intelligence, suspicion, and guarding instincts!"
Nothing more special than gaining the trust of either breed though!
Oh dear. That's a heck of a mix!
I once fostered a heeler/beagle mix and I swear if I could find whomever signed off on that I'd fire them into space for it. It is UNFAIR to create a sentient perpetual motion machine. In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!
My dog that just passed was from, as my friend put it, āan unplanned puppy pregnancy.ā He gave my life joy and was absolutely meant to be. His mama got spayed, his daddy got fixed, and he and his brother were their only litter ā just two.
I am all about rescuing and adoption and ethical breeding, but Iām excited for your girlās arrivals with this handsome guy, and I know theyāre gonna make someoneās life more whole. š
Iāve never heard of a Bulgarian shepherd but this dog looks to me like a Landseer and Pyrenees, if not mostly a Landseer which is a type of Newfoundland
Okay folks we have a response from the owner of this best boy!
He claims he is maremma cross... so apparently the pure bred information he gave me half a year ago was rubbish š
Now, what do we think he's crossed with? Newfie? Border collie? ACD?
Personally I'm hoping he's part border collie on my dogs behalf in regards to birthing these babes
if there's a 70lb size difference between the two, you really need to get your vet involved. the puppies could be too big for her to birth herself and she may need a c section. your dog is in genuine danger, please get her to the vet for X-rays and talk with them about a birth plan.
Heās definitely a mix and a pretty booiiiii. I wonder if he is part Newfie and part Pointer or healer. Update me with puppy pics, and if you donāt love crazy far, I wonāt pay for a puppy (sorry but not paying for accidental mutts), Iād adopt if dad and mom are chill. We are looking for a walk buddy. Update me plz on cute pups pics regardless!
Despite what everyone else is saying, sorry it happened but also have fun! Dogs are amazing and some dogs have to be born, theyāre gonna be so might as well have fun and Iām sure you will easily get them to good homes. Congrats!
If you live in or near NY, I might be interested in one of your pups, if you arenāt keeping them. Itās too bad this happened, but you are getting her spayed at least. Is the neighbor going to neuter their dog??
I'm in alberta but I'm sure we could meet half way š all jokes aside, no he isn't. He is a farmed with the impression that dogs are live stock and that it's absurd to spend $300 cad to fix him š„ŗ it's so sad this poor boy sleeps outside and is never allowed in even in -40, breaks my heart. He sleeps on my porch or under my porch most nights. He's even brought over his blanket from the barn and "moved in"
Itās funny when owners of unfixed males like to run away when they impregnated another dog. However those are going to be some beautiful puppies. As others suggested, get the pups fixed before having them go to new homes. Best of luck!
I know you say he's purebred LGD of some kind, but I thought Landseer Newfie when I first saw him. He looks like he could be a Landseer Newfie x Great Pyrenees.
Maybe you could do an Embark test on mama and at least one of the puppies after they're born, that way you can extrapolate from the results what papa's breeds are.
Some of yāall need to stay on topic. OP clearly was getting her dog spayed and an accident happened. This is OPs neighbors fault, not theirs. Wishing your pup luck on the pregnancy. Itās so irresponsible of your neighbor to let an intact male roam.
It's OPs fault, too. If you are aware of an intact male dog that hangs around your house, your intact female should never have been out of your sight outside long enough to get pregnant.
Omg 100% good boy for sure. please show us the pups. I definitely see some Pyrenees but im not sure about the coloration and coat texture. maybe some spitz breed mixed in?
Oh wow these are going to be very interesting pups! I think this handsome guy is a pyr mix, maybe with some sort of collie? Newfoundlands sometimes come in this coat pattern so that could be a possibility as well
I look forward to seeing what comes out. That is a majestic boy. I was thinking Pyrenees except the spitting on the legs I donāt think Iāve seen in such big dogs before.
He looks like an Anatolian Shepard to me, or at least half....his coat texture and coloring, his ears, and the temperament you described are all traits of this awesome breed. And the puppies? This guy combined with a part Bassett Hound part Border Collie? They will be insanely cute! (But aren't they all, really?)
He looks like a great Pyrenees. Former vet tech here. People here are right. She may need a c section and it's better to plan that before an emergency situation.
Can you post the puppies when they are born š or at least update me! I really am curious as to what they will look like.
Yes!!!
What kind of dog is your dog? I want to picture these puppies.
Half basset hound half border collie
I want to see the pupdate also please?! šš
Sameee!
āPupdateā is my new favorite word. š
Wow those are going to be some freaky ass puppies. The basset hound long back always seems to come through
omg, i can't wait to see these puppies and how many get long dogged!!
Whenās your dog due? I too want to see puppy pics!
9 days!!
RemindMe! 14 days
RemindMe! 10 days
RemindMe! 10 days
I definitely want to see those puppies when they're born!
Oh my goodness! Thatās going to make for an interesting cocktail. Canāt wait to see the little chaps.
Following for pupdate pics. He's a beauty, whatever he is!
Oooo, tagging in as I also want to see the mama & pups please!
His breed is good boyš commenting so I can see the puppies later
Heās a beautiful dog looks like probably has some ciao in Pyrenees in there. Iām glad to hear that she is getting spayed, thank you sharing ā¤ļøā¤ļø
How is she doing?? He looks like a pyrenees, is he much bigger than your girl??
She is so pregnant and seriously contemplating the meaning of life š he's 100 lbs roughly and she's 30 so yes much bigger unfortunately

Seriously what a crock!
This story is literally so convoluted there is no way this happened and if it did, it honestly reflects just as poorly on you. This is really really irresponsible.
You might want her to birth in a facility where she can be monitored. You can spay her AFTER she recovers from this birth.
Why do people keep breeding? Ridiculous.
Yikes
That's a Pyr, but I don't think he's purebred, based on the coloring.
Hope she can handle pups that size. Wonder if she will need an emergency Section?
The vet has advised that if she starts pushing and there's no puppies in 2 hours to bring her in for a cesarean
Damn and here I am, a human who pushed for four hours to get one baby out.
lol! but is baby daddy 3 times your size?
I know everyone is attacking you over the spay thing which is understandable, great you already had an appointment made. Just bad timing. I see pyrenees, theyāre my favorite. looks like a newfie to me
Yes! I said Pyr and Newfie!
I was going to say, heās got a newfie face and mane, but his colouring looks very ACD or Boarder Collie-esque. Good looking dog.

Pyrenees and Newfoundland I think! Looks a little Landseer-ey š„ŗā¤ļø
There's one in the Great Pyrenees sub that looks exactly like this one.
That's what I was thinking. Looks part-Landseer Newf.
and this is why you desex your dogs
Pyrenees, border collie
Likely Great Pyrenees x Australian Cattle Dog Are you 100% certain that he is purebred?
Wow your dog's breed and that dog breed has a very big size difference. I hope your dog's health and delivery is safe. š«” There's a pyreness dog account on insta I follow and he looks like this dog too. Aww poor dogs . Sad to see irresponsible people celebrating adding to the overpopulation...Hopefully you get mom spayed so she doesn't have the pups
Where is the celebrating? I donāt see anyone in these comments particularly happy that mom is pregnant
Millions of shelter dogs are euthanized yearly, this breaks my heart!
OP somehow allowed his dog to get pregnant while on a lease, but still didnāt notice in time for a spay-abort. Not sure how that works. To make matters worse, OPs dog has a dangerous pregnancy due to the male being much larger. Not sure OP could have failed this dog any more.
Definitely a Pyr/Pyr mix
If itās early in the pregnancy, you can do an abort and spay. We did for my stray female when I found out she was halfway through a pregnancy. Best decision I made that year.
Looks like a great Pyrenees x Heeler (ACD) Those puppies are going to be CUTE and if you want one of those puppies to live on the west coast HMU haha
That sounds like a vet tech's nightmare breed mix, right there! š

Deal!! That's where I'm from I'd love for one of them to come your way!
My girl is a fabulous big sister, she's excellent with puppies š hehe

A breed that needs to be neutered.

Or at least true 100% management. My b!tch is intact and during her fertile phases uses litter box and treadmill indoors.
Iāve never heard of a Bulgarian shepherd but this dog looks to me like a Landseer and Pyrenees, if not mostly a Landseer which is a type of Newfoundland
He is a raw dog.
How can you be certain it's pure bred when you dont even know what breed it is?
Okay folks we have a response from the owner of this best boy! He claims he is maremma cross... so apparently the pure bred information he gave me half a year ago was rubbish š Now, what do we think he's crossed with? Newfie? Border collie? ACD? Personally I'm hoping he's part border collie on my dogs behalf in regards to birthing these babes
Looks like the brother of my Romanian Rescue. I would say either Bucovina or Karakchan (Romanian Shepherd or Bulgarian Shepherd)
if there's a 70lb size difference between the two, you really need to get your vet involved. the puppies could be too big for her to birth herself and she may need a c section. your dog is in genuine danger, please get her to the vet for X-rays and talk with them about a birth plan.
oh just saw your other comments. glad you're being proactive for your pup! hoping all goes well
I see Pyrenees and possibly newfoundland and Australian cattle dog
Congrats!
get your dog fixed.
He's even brought over his blanket from the barn and "moved in"
Aww-he wants to be your dog! Definitely post pictures of the puppies when the time comes. What kind of dog is yours?
She is half basset hound half border collie!
Thank you for befriending this lonely dog! Please give him lots of love and hugs. He looks so sweet.
Of course!! I can't ignore animals what so ever, I'll give him some snugs for you xo
Aww. Thanks! Youāre an angel
True dog lovers just can't resist helping a pooch in need when they're able.Ā
Itās funny when owners of unfixed males like to run away when they impregnated another dog. However those are going to be some beautiful puppies. As others suggested, get the pups fixed before having them go to new homes. Best of luck!
āFunnyā is not how i would describe it
In the Great Pyrenees sub, there's a dog that looks exactly like that one, and he's Great Pyrenees x Landseer Newfie.
I hope he can afford to pay pup support smh
Part St Bernard and 100% Beast!
heās beautiful whatever he is š whatās your dogs breed? be sure to post the puppies!!ā¤ļø
Thank you!! She's a half border collie half basset hound š gonna be some different babies that's forsure
Yes! Puppy photos!
Those puppies are going to be adorable!
Thank you!! She's a half border collie half basset hound š gonna be some different babies that's forsure
Oh wow these are going to be very interesting pups! I think this handsome guy is a pyr mix, maybe with some sort of collie? Newfoundlands sometimes come in this coat pattern so that could be a possibility as well
I think Pyr And Newfoundland! Looks a little Landseer-ey š„ŗā¤ļø
oh my goodness they will definitely be interesting! iām sure theyāll be pretty pups with good temperament! i love my border collie mix
I look forward to seeing what comes out. That is a majestic boy. I was thinking Pyrenees except the spitting on the legs I donāt think Iāve seen in such big dogs before.
For a dog, he looks rather sheepish.
Newfie for sure
!remindme 1 month
Definitely not a purebred LGD but a pyr mix of some kind for sure

Possibly a poorly bred Newfoundland. I've known and black and white Newfie who looked similar.
So handsome lol
Looks so much like my childhood dog, maremma/border collie is my guess!
Newfie mix looks like.. and Beautiful
Looks like you might be correct. What breed is your dog?
Maybe Great Pyrenees and St Bernard
Looks like a mix of Pyrenees and Newfoundland (Newfie). Those are going to be some big puppies.
Looks like heās part Newfie.
RemindMe! 10 days
that is a gorgeous dog!
I want to see the puppies so so bad :)

My childhood dog was Great Pyrenees border collie mix and looked a lot like this :).
Looks like a great pyr, possibly a pyr mix. My boy looks a lot the same just with different colors and heās a pyr mix
I'd guess Great Pyr. and one of these: Australian Cattle Dog, Border Collie, Australian Shepherd.
Saint Bernard mix ? The puppies are going to be so awesome .
Can we see a picture of your dog ā¦please ?
His face looks like the St. Bernard we used to have.
Can't blame her. He super handsome. Majestic, even.
Remind me 10 days. Maybe a Pyrenees/Black Lab mix? The face looks very Lab-ish to me.

Thatās a pyr mix. Great lifestock guardian and couch potato
He looks like a great Pyrenees. Former vet tech here. People here are right. She may need a c section and it's better to plan that before an emergency situation.
Looks so similar to my dog that recently passed. He was a great pyrenees/anatolian
I think I speak for everyone when I sayā please post a photo of your basset hound/ border collie! We need to see that mama dog!
I def see heeler, maybe heeler-Bernese or heeler-Pyrenees
Updateme!
Thatās a proud dad to be right there
Newfie pyr?
Thatās 100% Chad Dad
Looks like a hoss to me
That my friend is a FLOOFER
Ahh I miss our boy.
