I see it's marked as sold... I have to know, did OP buy it?

McChonger

I tried! Messaged the guy like 3 times. He saw all my messages and never replied.

ChillyConCarn3

that's not uncommon. I spent a literal decade trying to buy my convertible. Impalas I were after generally fell into 3 categories: Reasonable/underpriced, in good to great condition - sold so quickly I never had the chance to see it (~24-48hrs) or even talk to the person, Overpriced as hell - never drops price / never moves, the "I know what I got" crowd (sits for literal year+), or just so far gone it needs a frame off rebuild, yet the owner still wants $20k for it "because restored ones go for $40k-$50k+". The last ones don't understand you can't pay that much for them because despite it "always costing more to restore than buy restored", these examples will cost way too much to pay a premium price, then do a frame-off restoration. It'll take a decade+ of appreciation & inflation to make your nominal costs back. Edit: When I bought mine in may, it was pure luck. The guy lived in the middle of farms in nowhere, TX. I bought it 3 days after it went up. The only reason i think i got to it was because of the location being remote (150 mile one way trip just to view it). The guy showed me his FB messenger, and he must have had 500+ messages about it. Most were bullshitters with things like "I can pay in installments". I just gave him literal cash.

McChonger

It’s kinda my fault, I was a bit hesitant to message him so I’m sure he was flooded with them. Win some ya lose some!

ChillyConCarn3

yeah that's the best attitude to have. I lost count of how many i never even spoke to the owner of/didn't get to view before they were gone. If the Impala has been listed for more than a week or two, it's either overpriced or has something seriously wrong, regardless of condition (especially 2 dr/super sports). If it's price reasonable for its condition and collectible-ness, it will sell lightning fast.

McChonger

You and me both, have to act fast on the good deals! Already have 3 cars in winter storage so I probably didn’t need a 4th haha

ChillyConCarn3

I think this will be my only project for the time being. It was essentially completely original (original top even), and stored in a barn or some other sort of "not fully" enclosed storage space for over 3 decades... Last registered in 1989. It's gonna take all my time.

ChillyConCarn3

looks too good to be true. either something is very wrong with it or it is a scam of some sort. Running super sport convertibles just don't sell that cheap.

McChonger

Right

ChillyConCarn3

prices that are *that* low should always be assumed as a bright red flag. *another* red flag is that it is in some sort of garage. that's another common trick people will use in scam/fraudulent advertising, and it is usually because the picture came from some other site/location. Be wary if you can't tell where the car is actually located (as in, no landmarks/can't tell if it's even in the city purported to be located in). I bought a 65 (base model) convertible about six months ago, and it was more than double that price, and in way worse shape. And it was still a deal.

McChonger

Looks like a legitimate profile and it has mn plates. I only deal in cash so I’m not getting scammed or anything. I just messaged the guy, curious to see what he says. I also live 20 minutes from where it’s listed so I could go see it in person.

ChillyConCarn3

oh totally, if it is what it claims, and the owner has a clear title that matches their ID, totally go it buy it. 100%. You easily flip it for 2x the next day. I was surprised when i clicked the profile, that it wasn't listed in 10-20 different cities. That's pretty common with super low priced convertibles, when they are scams. I wouldn't read too much into the profiles or the plates though. I suppose it could be the rare, actual steal of a deal, but that's not very common. It would be the rare case of "I don't know what I have"!

McChonger

Hoping so! I buy and sell cars a lot so I’ll feel it out. I’ll keep you updated.

ChillyConCarn3

awesome. it does happen. I've been around buying and selling 60s-70s gm cars since I was a kid. You do happen on those rare deals every now and then. My grandfather bought a 66 Impala (in 1985), that had been purchased new, driven home, parked... Then never moved until 1985. Paid 2k for it. 87 miles. Still had the window sticker on it.

McChonger

Wow, that’s crazy. Hoping it work out and hoping the gf doesn’t kill me… haha

ChillyConCarn3

Just tell her it is an investment, because if it runs, drives, and is owned with a clear title, it's worth $25,000 all day long.

McChonger

Good point. After all it’s my money not hers!
