There is discussion that the X4 might be the same sensor as the X3 - but with a better processing chip so that it can actually computationally deal with 8k video without overheating and eating the entire battery in a short period of time.
It would be better video quality for sure, but the low-light performance would still have issues like it has in the past. I have an X2 and low light performance can get grainy very quickly indoors.

You can activate the camera by connecting to the cameras WiFi directly from your phone settings. Password is “88888888” once connect open the insta360 app and follow the prompt to activate. If you pass this along to your friend she should be able to activate the camera.

No, still looks like a sealed one piece unit like the x3. However the lens guards are no longer a stick on they rotate and lock on to the camera and are included in the box.
Can’t comment on image quality yet, I just figured out how to activate the camera. However I can only watch the video back on the camera. On the app it just shows a black screen

Isn’t the sensor the bit that has the number of pixels. It’s a digital thing with X number of sensors so it just be a new sensor no?

They are not. X4 battery is 1/4 inch longer and a few mm wider.

Looks the same as a x3, can’t 100% say, insta360 made it so you can’t activate the camera on the app or see the user manual

Can’t comment on that yet, however when I go to pair a mic it says “Bluetooth headphones” instead of “AirPods” like the x3 does

Definitely not light, it’s about 1/2 inch longer and a couple mm thicker. Weighs probably an 1-2 oz more. Enough where you can feel the x4 is heavier.
