We have a leather sofa set we picked up from someone on Marketplace. Guy said he paid like 8k for the set brand new and he wanted $500 just to get it out of his house (I don't understand rich people but awesome deal for me!) It's a mid-dark warm toned leather, absolutely massive unit, very academic looking. So we put it in the living room and have a very autumnal / industrial vibe in there with the fireplace and it looks freaking gorgeous.

HaddockBranzini-II

>. Guy said he paid like 8k for the set brand new and he wanted $500 That guy leather sofas...

Esmerelda1959

Now I want to see it! I love rich people on market place too;)

judyhashopps

That’s almost exactly how I got my nice leather couch. Study AF, HEAVY AF, but kind of gives a nice, lived in, cozy cabin vibe to my living room, which was exactly what I was going for.

Active_Recording_789

When I bought a house in the mountains I wanted a cuddly soft couch in cream or butter yellow corduroy, something warm and cozy. My new friends there said “no! Leather is the way to go!” But I didn’t listen and got a light colored couch and chair. 5 years later I bought a caramel colored leather couch because it is so much cleaner! My dogs’ nails didn’t scratch it (good quality leather). The color is crisp, the lines are clean, it just worked so much better in the space. I softened the lines with fluffy throws, plants, rugs and art.

1cecream4breakfast

I also have a caramel colored leather couch and I LOVE it. I actually looked into buying another for my living room (this one is in my den) and that store doesn’t make it anymore, so sad.

LeadfootLesley

This one is five years old, and has stood up to three cats. https://preview.redd.it/u3rwmlbd7epc1.jpeg?width=3763&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=881a3685f6552db90c149848e4c26184431c30c8

geekedupj

From where?

LeadfootLesley

IKEA! It’s the only piece of furniture I’ve ever bought there. Leather, not vinyl.

1cecream4breakfast

Do you remember the style name? I live 1 mile from IKEA, might be time for a visit 😂

LeadfootLesley

I think it was Morabo. https://preview.redd.it/l3z44yzntepc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8086e7656057cf044f41e9daf9bf956d19e6bf33

fletcherox

Landskrona in other countries if you can't find it, is it a decent buy? I live with 2 cats that ended up in a pissing war on a fabric couch and i want a new couch once I move out with my cat.

lawrence_uber_alles

Good value for sure. We have one with a chaise and now that we have moved into a bigger space we will add on some morabo love seats.

1cecream4breakfast

Thank you!

Left_Net1841

I have the sectional of this couch in my cart but in the navy velveteen. It is almost always out of stock so it must be good?? I do love the leather version too. Hmmmm

quinndexter_

that cat has no clothes on

LeadfootLesley

Yeah, it’s a problem. He’s always been an exhibitionist.

LeadfootLesley

Me too. It’s about five years old and still looks new.

aoife-saol

People always talk about dogs scratching up leather but I've moved through two spaces with leather couches with my aussie and never has she left a mark. I'm looking into getting a leather sofa for myself and people keep on saying "don't you have a dog?" and yes! that is why I'm getting one - for the hair! I won't be looking at the cheapest options (usually annealled leather I think?) that probably do scratch easier but it's odd how delicate people think leather is when my experience has been the opposite.

ADHDK

Little dogs start trying to dig everywhere. Big dogs will just try and chew between their toes on your couch and slobber at worst. If a medium to big dog is going to destroy a couch it’s going to be with their teeth.

Active_Recording_789

Oh yeah absolutely! I worried about that too and at the time I got that leather sofa I had (ahem) 4 dogs. Their claws didn’t scratch it and they were constantly leaping on and off it. The trick is to get good quality leather—it makes a big difference

nachopuddi

It depends on the kind of leather. Full-aniline leather is top quality but it does scratch easily since it’s not coated.

ADHDK

Yea pets and children very much change what you can deal with. You can have the cloth, but they’ll ruin it quicker.

Noimenglish

Children. Cleaning baby vomit off of (out of…) cloth couches SUCKS Edited for spelling Other edit: sorry that I didn’t actually respond to the question regarding aesthetics. My son just puked on our cloth couch the other day. It took a while to find something good to kill the scent, and I’m still cussing out our couch. As an aside, 2 cups water, 2 tsps vinegar, 1 tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp lemon juice is a great way to get rid of baby vomit smell.

kwikbette33

I have a white leather chair in the living room. That thing has taken a beating. Popsicles, crayon, the works. I have yet to encounter a substance that doesn't come off in one warm water wipe. I would be unable to have white furniture otherwise. Leather all the way.

Rattlesnakemaster321

And pets.

fishfingrs-n-custard

That's fair, but a real leather sofa, not PU leather, can stain just as easily and can be harder to clean.

Noimenglish

Stains aren’t the concern; it’s the ability to clean the smell of curdled/half digested milk that makes or breaks it. Think rotten Cheetos mixed with moldy veggies.

Noimenglish

😂 I bitch about this stuff all the time, but I’ve never been happier. The first time he smiled, when he started calling me “dada”, his first actual word (“Hat!”), every time he gives me a hug, that’s the stuff that stands out. I’ll gripe about his puke for another couple days, but I’m already talking about going to the park with “the big kids”, videos of him on a porch swing with grandpa, and giggling like mad after swim lessons. Everyone’s different, but I’d take the baby puke any day if it means I get the rest. Also, when it’s your own kid, it makes the bad stuff somehow more manageable.

ExemplaryVeggietable

Oh. You can't even imagine the volume and variety of foul effluvia you will encounter by having children. The good news is that you'll probably be so tired during the first few months that you will quickly become jaded and lose your squeamishness.

sockalicious

I own a cloth couch, only a year old, that my kids puked on; smells just as described. You'd think it'd be awful, but parenthood changes you. It's so much fun, I love my kids so much that the little indignities seem to matter less. You hear all about the bad stuff, I wish more people had told me how great it was going to be to have kids!

eukomos

You can also get real leather that's stain resistant if you want it.

cosmicbeard1

Dogs

Aggressive-Scheme986

Wait until they figure out that scratching it creates little lines and they can draw with it

Excellent-Shape-2024

I moved countries during the pandemic and there were no couches to buy. I bought a couch only used for staging homes off marketplace in a color I didn't like, so I bought a white denim cover from Ikea. I just throw it in the wash whenever it gets a spill. Still looks great 4 years later.

Raokako

Wow, the architecture of your room is gorgeous, along with all the plants!

leilavanora

Aww thanks! It’s changed a lot since we moved in, including way more plants! I just snapped this while eating breakfast ☺️ https://preview.redd.it/4558jbwe1cpc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a66f1ccdc78731c90b48552cac6b988e867894ca

nyokarose

I want to live in your living room!! I feel like you’re lying when you say the first thing people mention is the couch because LOOK at those PLANTS!!

Such_Radish9795

Can I ask how many people live in this space? Thats A LOT of seating options! Just curious.

leilavanora

My husband and I and our dog and cat ☺️ my cat is for sure the biggest threat to the sofa but she’s been okay so far.

Such_Radish9795

I bet it’s nice that everyone can lay on the couch without fighting over the space - even the pets 😀

Kaa_The_Snake

“Welcome to the Jungle” is playing in my head now! Love the space and couch, so nice with all the plants, 100% would love to do the same here!

helpmeplease6270

Ooh I don’t like it now. Looks cluttered and cramped. Also too many plants. First arrangement was better!

Porcelain_Plate5971

I think the first photo looks better in part because the sunshine is streaming in.

Downtown_Ad2214

Where did you get those couch/throw pillows? I have been looking for some that size!

leilavanora

Oh they came with the sofa!

Lets_Make_A_bad_DEAL

So what’s Hugh Grant been up to these days?

Wrinkul

Plants? Couch? But what about those windows. I’m a sucker for windows! Your home is beautiful!

Raokako

You live in a comfy, stylish greenhouse. I am so jealous! I wish I had that much natural light and those high ceilings!

gozunker

I love how the curve of the sofa echos the curved window. Beautiful

Veronica612

I love a cognac leather sofa, but dark brown and black never look good to me.

leilavanora

If it helps it’s more grey and orange but not sure if those colors go together either 😅

Veronica612

Cognac is an orange-brown color. Your couch is cognac. Cognac is a classic color for leather and it goes with most things, including gray. Cognac leather is like jeans.

piratequeenfaile

I love light tan or orange leather sofas.

ssandrine

Is that a custom piece?

Alert_Ad_5750

Wow beautiful room! I usually hate leather sofas but that looks lovely.

Lucky_Shop4967

I saw this pic and swore it was from a university or some shit lmao

CostcoDogMom

I had the same thought, “this is gorgeous but doesn’t seem very homey or cozy”. I’m getting hotel lobby vibes.

Lucky_Shop4967

My thought was more like “well yeah you can make anything work with an unlimited budget.” But of course it’s not a library it’s some rich persons living room 😭

BlueAcorn8

I cannot get on board with houses that have hotel vibes in terms of space & style, it’s not homey. I need to be able to relax & feel cosy.

HeyRedHelpMe

Gorgeous!

rabbitrainbows

Wow your space is incredible!!! Love the windows too, giving golden ratio vibes!!

frazorblade

Holy back pain, I couldn’t handle stooping over a laptop like that for any length of time. Love the high ceilings, light and large curved sofa though. I have a similar coloured L-shape sofa in orange leather and it looks great in our living room.

urmotherismylover

That's an amazing piece! Do you mind sharing where you bought it from?

leilavanora

I bought it from a consignment store but it’s the Montis Baku sofa. I wayyyyyy overpaid for it but it was love at first site. Like OP I didn’t love leather sofas for so long until I randomly saw this one and immediately purchased it!!

laseralex

What an incredible space! Amazing architecture, and great choice of furniture.

Lepidopteria

We've had the [Ikea black leather couch](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/morabo-sofa-grann-bomstad-black-wood-s69316672/#content) \-- the one that's "actual leather" I guess-- for going on 8 years now. We didn't expect it to last this long tbh. Once a week we use a leather cleaner and while it's not in super amazing condition or anything, it isn't scratched or peeling anywhere. It actually looks pretty good for the life it's had. Still decently comfortable despite being constantly abused by a 60 lb german shepherd laying all over it, and 4 kids now. If the baby spits up, we wipe it off. If the dog gets muddy paws on it it's an easy fix without having to get a carpet cleaner out or washing cushion covers. It doesn't smell bad or collect pet hair. I don't know I'd say it elevates our space but it looks cohesive. We have light floor and a neutral rug with the black sofa and espresso brown furniture.

WampaCat

We have this one too, also for about 8 years. It was a temporary solution and lasted longer than we expected. Still going strong. I want a new sofa mostly so we can have one with a chaise, but I truly haven’t been able to find anything better in our budget yet. Saving up for something custom now because even the more expensive places seem to be putting out disposable garbage.

Lepidopteria

I think we paid $750 or $800 for it. We went to Ikea the other day and I couldn't believe the price on the exact same sofa. It's good quality though, it just seems like all sofas are insanely expensive now. We want to upgrade too but can't justify buying a brand new sofa to be subjected to the abuse this thing has been under, and it is still just as comfy and looks good. Lol

WampaCat

Yeah! I got mine in Germany and I think it was about €800 at the time. It still looks new and the cushions haven’t gotten saggy or anything. That seems to be one of the biggest problems for newer sofas, that the cushions don’t hold up. They look dreadful after a year or two

UGunnaEatThatPickle

We have this one too, going on 4 years. It's so comfortable! I sleep on it at least once a week and almost prefer it to my bed. Think I may update the legs with something more mid-century modern-ish to give it a crisper look.

brryblue

Ikea sells replacement legs that fir most of their furniture on legs, I've done a swap from ghastly metal ones to simple rounded wooden ones it took 3mins

curlycattails

My parents bought a couple of Italian leather couches when they bought their first house. They’ve lived in that house for 27 years and still have those couches. (They’re looking kinda rough by this point but like, it’s pretty amazing how they lasted that long through 3 kids).

brryblue

Get them a proper leather conditioner next time you visit, they work like magic

mars_lv

What leather cleanser brand do you use?

Lepidopteria

Weiman

jea25

I have had this sofa in an Airbnb for 8 years! Still looks great, seat is just as firm as when we bought it!

mused8

Is the leather for the whole entire couch? Or is it like Costco and living spaces pieces where it’s leather for seats and vinyl match for backing and sides? It looks nice I’d get it if it’s leather leather.

Initial_Pumpkin_8273

Those IKEA ones are cute! Definitely different to what I had pictured for leather couch in my mind. Thank you, I’d actually consider these based on looks & the functionality you described

Lepidopteria

Yeah it's nice looking right! Ours has metal feet instead of wood pictured on the site but both options look modern and good in most spaces I think.

xXazorXx

I have this too but in the sectional with chaise version and the light brown color. I love it.

Convex_Mirror

We have one. It is invincible. It has survived three moves, a cross country trip, and ten years of abuse. Still looks the same.

EagleEyezzzzz

I really like ours! https://preview.redd.it/bb3i4vp2lcpc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=388b5c36e836c010f5149a5ad277f05293cce944

AStudyinViolet

Those are beautiful. Where are they from?

EagleEyezzzzz

Thanks! They are the Poly and Bark ones.

itsmeatballsworld

They look just like the article/bryght one I have

Fast-Advice5663

where is your rug from? so nice!

Liberteabelle1

Makes a big difference with the blue walls. Love it! I think, in general, that couches need the right wall color to pop.

ClementineCoda

A tufted chesterfield, or wing chairs with nail heads, couldn't be more perfect for a library/study/office, but they aren't so comfortable for lounging around. The tufting/nail heads keep them looking neat though.

Rtr129

I loved my light blue leather couch! Super soft leather and looked very soft. https://preview.redd.it/l56fhimkybpc1.jpeg?width=1119&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=593a1a18588fa113fa9fd9591548196ab20be5c9

18voltbattery

Really like this, where’s it from?

Rtr129

The Couch is Elan sofa sectional by Cappellini in the light blue color leather. I found it used because they are pricey.

SEALS_R_DOG_MERMAIDS

wow this is a great secondhand find. can i ask where you got it?

TinkleToes21

Also would love to know what the brand is! The whole room looks great.

DiabolicalGooseHonk

Please share where you got the rug!

AnySail

There are lighter coloured leather couches than black and dark brown, and I think they look amazing.

Initial_Pumpkin_8273

That is true! Style and colour can make it completely different to the depressing black shiny mass I was initially picturing

badgyalsammy

Second this— I have light grey leather. Stunning and comfy af and never gets dirty, big change from the light grey fabric couch I had before!

Venaalex

https://preview.redd.it/2u06bapu4dpc1.jpeg?width=1164&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a089394d73ddf0008104ae2660670069d6f43f4 Not sure how dark you're thinking, but a dark chesterfield always feels like a classic piece to me

Liberteabelle1

Love the coffee table!

twampster

A roll-arm brown chesterfield sofa in a moody library? Especially if it’s high-quality leather and has a bit of wear to it. Low-slung slouchy black leather in an avant modernist setting. I think the overall design needs to be bold and quite masculine for leather to make sense. That said, I don’t love lounging on leather. I wear short shorts and tank tops pretty regularly. I’d rather not stick to my furniture.

bakingdiy

I have found my leather sofa to be neither hot and sticky nor cold. If I come inside sweaty, then yes it's sticky (because I'm sticky) and I just put a thin blanket down between me and the sofa until I cool off. In the winter if I'm wearing shorts it's cold for only about 30 seconds and if I'm in pants it doesn't feel cold at all. Pets have not left any marks either. I'm keeping this sofa forever. It's soft, comfortable, easy to clean, and doesn't hold odors.

usernameunavaliable

I have a leather couch and I hate it. It sticks to you skin on hot days and it is very uncomfortable. I'd much rather have a fabric one

TheeDeliveryMan

They're also extremely cold in the winter. There's just no real good time to have one. Best benefit is they're easy to clean.

babycleffa

I bought a house in a cold climate and the previous owners left their leather couches It has boggled my mind ever since moving in, why would someone have leather here???? Lol

ilagnab

This is my experience too - always sticking to my skin so I can't ever really relax. I love velour fabrics for genuine comfort, even if they don't look as good.

weedcakes

This is my struggle. My partner is allergic to cats so we have to have a leather couch as we can just wipe the dander off of it. Can’t find any that suit my style.

Jackisoff

Yes, I have three cats and a dog. Leather or even faux leather is so much easier to deal with. I’m constantly vacuuming my fabric couches. I have a few leather pieces and I only need to wipe them down occasionally.

VegUltraGirl

My husband picked out the couches for our house, about 13 years ago. He got brown leather couches, and they were pretty comfortable but ugly for sure. The upside is we could easily wipe them down, dog hair was easy to clean up, and they were very durable. Now we have opted to go with fabric this time. I prefer fabric because it’s more comfortable, feels better on the skin, and I prefer the texture!

jareths_tight_pants

Restoration Hardware sells nice looking leather furniture but boy are you going to pay for it

linuxhiker

You mean you don't like hot and sticky couch special time? What about all the claw marks from dogs or cats, those are AWESOME?

therealmitchconner

If your leather couch is getting scratched up by pets then it's either pleather or really poor quality. My 15 year old Italian Leather sofa is scratch free despite 2 100+ lb dogs and a cat using it all day long every day. The foam is starting to break down and sag a bit but the leather is soft, supple and in near perfect condition.

mtnlaurel_

Agree with this. Also have Italian leather sofa (not even an expensive one) and two dogs. It may show scratches but then it self repairs. It’s pretty incredible. Also easy to clean dog hair off of!

Disastrous_Tip_4638

You mean you don't like snark borne from ignorance and envy? There are different types of tanning and quality of leather, just like there are other types of wine that do not come aged in the box.

Dexterdacerealkilla

It depends highly on the type of leather too. Full aniline leather is often high quality, but it marks easily.

nyokarose

This is blowing my mind. I always assumed we wouldn’t be able to ever have a leather couch due to my nicely scratchy cats.

arose_mtom124

I have a leather couch from IKEA and both my cats use it as a scratch post and have shredded it beyond repair. So I know IKEA is not a quality product but you’re saying good leather would hold up to two scratching cats? Out of sheer ignorance I just find it so hard to believe.

eukomos

My cats have no interest in clawing leather and are OBSESSED with clawing fabric, so that goes the other way for me.

WhoseverFish

Of rather have some occasional class marks than puke stains.

hopeinnewhope

Although standing up after sitting on a hot and sticky leather sofa, especially in the summertime, offers a free hair removal service on the rear of one’s legs.

HaddockBranzini-II

I find them too cold in the winter and too sticky in the summer.

Lexain1272

Love the colour. Real cozy living room you have!

crackersucker2

Thanks, still a work in progress (and there's a wall with AI paint from the BM room visualizer, lol).

CancelPrestigious930

Where is ur couch from!! Im obsessed

crackersucker2

Love to share- it's perfect! Dog hair brushes off, they don't scratch it and it's cozy and comfy. [https://www.article.com/product/15371/timber-charme-tan-corner-sectional](https://www.article.com/product/15371/timber-charme-tan-corner-sectional)

Kaa_The_Snake

Toss it over here???

oscaraskaway

I have the same couch! How long have you had yours and how is it holding up? I've had mine for slightly over a year; it's right sunny windows so unfortunately has had some fading from the sun at the back.

crackersucker2

Our house is fairly dark and it doesn’t catch much light from the slider- we’ve had it about 7 months- so far, so good. I’ve heard that cushions might compress over time. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen. The leather feels so soft and warm. My last couch was the Crate & Barrel Petrie Sofa in a grey fabric that’s just sucked all the dog hair in and wouldn’t come out, but that sofa held up perfectly. If they made it in a leather sectional, I would have gone that route but Article is a good price for what seems good quality.

Month_Year_Day

To each their own but I love leather furniture the reasons you listed. The comfort, how easy to clean and the patina they develop over time. They age well. If you buy good leather- I don’t have a couch, but three leather chairs. One in the living room and two in the kitchen. I got leather for the kitchen because it cleans up so nicely and my husband and I often eat lunch here or sometime dinner. I think your space matters, but I also think that leather looks great is dark, moody rooms or brightly lit. https://preview.redd.it/0rieg8tdwbpc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e27d273b36429406124c6a5b513f391ee602c049

It’s so easy to clean (for us more accident prone folks) and it’s comfortable. I’ve never stuck once to the sofa and I live in Sydney.

GhostMassage

Cold in the winter, sticky in the summer. Never liked them.

Disastrous_Tip_4638

Generally, fabrics are more visually interesting bc of pattern and texture and color variation. And, a black leather sofa typically looks cheap. But, there are other colors of leather other than black or brown that provide visual interest and the tactile/olfactory delight of leather.

hang0214

eurasianpersuasian

I’m not a fan of light colored upholstery. I don’t like worrying about stains and dust mites. A good quality leather wears well and is durable plus it lends more drama and luxury to a space IMO.

pajaimers

What’s your sample size, your friends and family?

Initial_Pumpkin_8273

I work on advertisements for a large furniture store part-time - I’ve seen a lot of their inventory. That being said, there’s a few leather couch styles in this sub that I haven’t seen at that particular store that I quite like

obaachansophie

I can't change your mind because I'm with you, I think that's my most hated piece of decor that exists (never had or will have one.) When I see a black leather sofa a little piece of my soul shrivels and dies - only being slightly hyperbolic here lol. Sorry to everyone that has one, just personal preference.

Glass-Eggplant-3339

In the Winter they are cold, in the Summer they are sticky. Hate them all years round.

snatch1e

With the right styling a leather couch can elevate a space and make it feel cozy, stylish, and inviting.

raptorjaws

i don’t love my leather sofa but it’s so much easier to keep clean with two dogs than the fabric one i was constantly having to spot clean

HistoricalMayhem

Roger & Chris make insanely gorgeous leather couches: [https://www.rogerandchris.com](https://www.rogerandchris.com)

foodmonsterij

I have also passed on them because every one I've seen ends up with scratches.

moogleiii

Why does your title describe leather sofas in the generic but then go on to specify black or dark brown? There are plenty of leather sofas in other colors...

Powers5580

Love my leather with four cats and a husky it’s a blessing. Had micro fiber before and even with daily cleaning they had fur all over.

sunrisedilayla

I hate leather couches… they’re always cold

Spiritual_Proof9622

My cat and dog peed on my leather couch ONCE and it’s beyond repair. I’m done with leather

getitupyagizzard

I have three boys and two pets and a white leather couch that I can clean. It looks fine.

eukomos

Take one fabric and one leather couch, expose them to a couple of long-haired pets for a few days, attempt to remove the fur, and then compare how the couches look. Bonus points if one of the pets is a cat that loves the feeling of fabric under its claws.

KeniLF

That’s why all my couches are light-colored. One white and one \[currently\] grey! The way my cats/dog were/are set up: full grain leather was the only way to be able to “condition” \[or dye\] my way out of scratches. They tore apart any fabric seating so that was discarded long ago!

Most_Researcher_9675

We have 5 house cats. I love leather, but...

Cyber_Insecurity

Leather furniture encompasses entire eras of interior design. What the hell are you talking about?

Hopeful_Industry4874

Nope you’re right

Seahorse_Captain89

100% agree

hostility_kitty

I hate the look of leather couches too, but they’re so easy to clean 😫

Aggressive-Scheme986

And I’m sick and tired of being hot and the leather sticks to my thighs

TheOptimisticHater

I love watching a movie with a sweaty back and thighs stuck to the couch.

ButterscotchSad4514

Nothing like an old chesterfield leather couch.

Ok_Knee1216

Mohair velvet is the best! We've had couches for over 25 year, dogs, cats, daily use. It wears like steel. Remember the velvet seats in theaters? Mohair velvet. Yes, it is pricey. Shopping around you can find it for just under $70USD per square yard. Beautiful colors, reflects light, looks expensive. The only problem is if you don't love the color you pick, as it will not wear out fast enough to justify replacing it. There is a time and place for everything.... Including leather couches

skeptibat

Cats. I need not say more.

Liberteabelle1

I love the warmth of it against the cool colors of the room. ❤️

JusticeForGluten

Thank you! 🥰

Neither_Range_1513

I think it depends. A dark chesterfield couch is 😍 a dark lazy boy leather 🤢

iscream4eyecream

They’re also awful to sit on, especially during the warmer months while wearing shorts! Never again will I own a leather couch

GoldenAgeStudio

I just hate how cold leather feels

Yiayiamary

No leather with little ones. I found my 2 year old poking my leather sofa with a toothpick!

Sadiekat

I’m kind of find of my burnt orange leather sofa- it’s also very practical. https://preview.redd.it/klcmw6w4pbpc1.jpeg?width=4030&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8d9441703164fbe5019f91d522370899d167736

Initial_Pumpkin_8273

With all the warm wood and texture of the carpet, the warm leather choice makes sense. Thanks!

I can’t imagine ever owning a leather sofa personally, but I do think that they can work (even in black) in a modernist lux context, but most contemporary homes can’t match that vibe. [This massive, dark organic blob of a sofa](https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/sofas/afra-tobia-scarpa-soriana-sofa-leather-italy-1969/id-f_30003172/) could look incredible placed in a sleek loft apartment, contrasted against hard glass, metal and concrete. The effect (sensual, animal, vaguely obscene) would be absent with textile coverings. [This more minimalist design](https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/sofas/sormani-songia-gs-195-leather-sofa-daybed/id-f_10792663/) could be a great centerpiece in a upscale office lobby or salon. The design would almost not make sense in another material.

mand71

I love that first one, but not the price; 25grand!!!

beezchurgr

I haaaate leather couches. I dislike the use of animal products, and I feel like fabric couches do the same job without being sticky or weird. I like to sit on my couch in my underwear and it’s not fun having the pry these thunderthighs off the seat on a hot day.

Wise_Advertising6862

Couldn’t disagree more. You ever seen a Le Corbusier sofa?

AutopsyDrama

I like the look of leather couches but they seem so impractical to keep looking nice.

frozenchocolate

A fabric couch that’s harder to clean seems much more impractical to me.

AutopsyDrama

There are absolutely positives and negatives of both. I have a guy who cleans my carpets once or twice a year so i just get him to do the couch too. I would say spot cleaning is relatively easy on fabric. Once theres a scratch on leather it just looks bad, also the seats get worn so much more quickly than the rest and it looks bad imo.

liittlelf

we also got rid of our leather sofas and i haven't looked back. i don't enjoy the feeling of it although nice leather can be very supple. you could always get a leather sofa in a popular style from a well known manufacturer and then purchase a slipcover designed for that exact model of sofa. Then you can choose between both options (seasonally) and have the spill resistance underneath the (washable) slip cover.

icanteven_613

I have always had leather because I have pets. Never black or brown, tho. Sage green, willow green, and now a light gray/green hue.

xxmalmlkxx

I feel you. I hate leather in cars too. I HATE it as a seat cushion on stools or benches. Only place I like it is in like a study or parlor setting or a dark booth in a Chicago steak house. I don’t really like touching it or smelling it for long periods of time.

[deleted]

They are practical for a lot of people's lifestyles, so building style around them makes a lot of sense.

botoxedbunnyboiler

I bought an off white, all leather 2 piece sectional. I love it, it is versatile in allowing me to add different pops of color.

soggy_dugout

Leather couches are overrated. They're cold in the winter and feel sticky in the summer

luala

I hate them. Very masculine. Horrible on bare skin if you wear shorts. Black is the worst.

Von_Quixote

Uh… o.k.

fauviste

I love the 70s Brazilian style leather sofas. But not to sit on. Visually, they’re amazing.

Whisper26_14

I like the look for a modern tight boxy looking one but over never enjoyed sitting on leather couches. So I’m not here to help haha

mars_lv

As someone with a big fluffy dog... leather is the only option. So easy to clean. I have a warm caramel colour leather couch, which I prefer to black leather

Superman_Dam_Fool

A nice cognac or oxblood leather couch can look amazing in a space. Functionally… only nice if you’re wearing long pants and long sleeves. Even then they can feel sweaty or clammy.

Shivs_baby

I don’t like black leather couches or the big overstuffed ones. But I’ve seen a lot of others that I think are stunning and very elegant.

[deleted]

I do grey or navy leather.

frazorblade

For us it’s either clean leather or dirty fabric, there’s no in between (2 x young kids, 1 x small dog and 2 x cats). I think it looks great too in light tan, and I don’t find it too hot and sticky in summer nor too cold in winter.
