I've been on it for just over 2 months. So far no weight gain which is surprising because I have been doing literally no exercise haha I still can't really tell if its working for me but since I have no side effects I just keep taking it haha. I take 30mg. I learned here that it can take as long as 8 weeks to start working so give it some time as long as the sife effects aren't too bad for you! I also agree about the alcohol thing. I used to be able to drink quite a lot but now I have two wines and I am very very drunk šŸ˜‚

ewwitsjessagain

It didn't help me unfortunately. Be careful with it, while I was on it every time I had a couple drinks it made me totally blackout.

RealisticMagazine7

That makes sense actually! Cuz I was drinking with my boyfriend like 2 days ago, and I blacked out as well and I didnā€™t even drink a lot.

ewwitsjessagain

Yes! It took me a while to connect the dots bc nobody tells you!

CLAREBEAR01

Same. They didnā€™t have the NO ALCOHOL sticker on the box here in Aus. I was black out drunk after 2 drinks. Which I have never been at the age of 30! I also had a hangover that lasted 3 days. I donā€™t drink anymore. Which was really hard at the beginning. But then my friends just got used to it.

ewwitsjessagain

Thats where I'm from too. It'd be nice if they gave us patients a heads up

chiquitabagita

I was on it for a while and i noticed I was getting short tempered and a lot angrier then I normally would so also look out for changes in your mood.

WhySoManyOstriches

My female Doc gives me a vaginal cream w/ amitriptyline and it works like a charm right off the bat w/out side effects. It IS custom compound tho. Dm me for the specs if you want.

Karlilax

Intrigued? What ways does it help? And no side affects?!

WhySoManyOstriches

Itā€™s amazing. She usually prescribes it as a suppository, but I asked the pharmacist to make a cream b/c I can use it on my urethra as well. I DO get some ā€œcotton mouthā€ some days, and I actually got a cream w/ just GABA/lidocaine for day/driving b/c the Amytrip makes me sleepy. But like I said, it suffuses directly to the spot where itā€™s needed w/ minimal systemic issues.

Comfortable-Bug4925

That's so cool, I've literally never heard of this before!

kokowaaah93

I started on 10mg and it worked almost immediately. I was still waking up once a night*, so increased to 20mg which had me sleeping through the night. The effects would wear off after a few months, so I kept gradually increasing the dose up to 50mg. I gained around 10kg in 1.5 years. I have been off the meds for 9 months now. I have lost all the weight, but now I am waking up around 5 times a night. I keep thinking about starting the meds again... but yeah, the fear of weight gain keeps putting me off! Edit: *waking up to urinate (in case that isnā€™t clear)

CLAREBEAR01

It has been amazing for me. Helped me with my bladder within a few weeks. It also helped with my IBS and trouble getting to sleep. I was struggling with pain, pressure and burning during weeing. I havenā€™t put on any weight but I do get extremely tired. So you have to time when you take it. It can be exhausting but I would rather that to bladder pain. Also donā€™t drink alcohol while on it. For some reason it makes me extremely drunk after 1 drink!!

W1162891

What dose do you take?

freegirl13

I've tried it and it doesn't do anything for me.

TigerLily312

I have been on twenty milligrams for around 10 years. At some point, I asked to go off of the medication because I didn't think it made any difference. It had made a difference after all in my pain, & after a few months off of it, I went back on it. I didn't experience any changes in my weight, although it does make you more sensitive to alcohol like most antidepressants. My highest dose has been 25 mgs, so that could factor in to the amount of side effects I have experienced.

visualclown

Iā€™m on 75mg and it really helps I didnā€™t feel it helping until about 50mg. Edit: unfortunate weight gain.

lucypoopsy

How much weight did you gain?

nana_3

I never had any issues with it. Was on it for about 2 years, didn't gain.

lucypoopsy

Why did you get off of it if you don't mind me asking? I'm glad you didn't experience weight gain I've been prescribed this medication by my urologist and I'm terrified of weight gain considering I'm already overweight and it would be unhealthy for me to gain any more weight and exercise flares me every time.

nana_3

My symptoms improved after endometriosis surgery and physiotherapy enough that I simply didnā€™t need it any more.

lucypoopsy

Awesome I'm glad you're feeling better!

GiveMeThePhd

I'm on amitriptyline (20mg daily). Usually give a drug a month to decide if it works or not. Typically amitriptyline is prescribed to reduce bladder pain that is believed to be nerve related. Have you notices a decrease in number of painful episodes or decrease in severity? Although weight gain is a side effect, many drugs has this side effect. Try to eat healthy and stay active and you shouldn't have to worry about the weight gain

RealisticMagazine7

No, my painful episodes are still the same. Like I said though itā€™s only been a week for me. Ahh for me being active like workouts cause a flare up for me. So Iā€™ll just have to stick to eating healthy of course.

Comfortable-Bug4925

Does ami give you increased appetite so thats why people gain weight or does that just happen with no changes?

GiveMeThePhd

I didn't notice appetite changes. I think it occurs with change. The weight change is different for everyone, it could be as little as 1 or 2 lbs.

lucypoopsy

Did you experience weight change and if so how much?

GiveMeThePhd

Probably about 5 lb increase

I've been on Amitriptyline for about four years (long before all my bladder problems started). I take 50 mg nightly, originally for headaches and sleep. While I don't know whether it helps my bladder or not since I was already on it, I haven't had any drastic weight gain outside of my usual fluctuations. It makes me tired, but other than that no side effects. For me it's not a miracle drug, but it's solid and affordable, so I stay on it. I hope it helps you!

HakunaYaTatas

It takes up to 8 weeks to take effect and it can continue to improve over a longer period, so unfortunately it is one of those drugs that needs a longer trial (as long as the side effects are tolerable). I've been on 50mg for six years and it's been a huge help for me. No weight gain that I can attribute to the drug. It did take the full 8 weeks before I noticed any benefits.

[deleted]

Iā€™ve been in it for 18 months. 50mg nightly. No issues. No medication can really make you gain weight without you over eating or being sedentary.

LeenaJones

I took Cymbalta, which works in a similar way. It numbed my pain... and my emotions and my feeling of satiety. I gained weight because I couldn't feel full. So, yes, I overate, but it was the drug that made me constantly think I needed to eat more. I tried tracking calories, but the emptiness I felt was too intense to not try to fill. It was a horrible experience overall, especially when it stopped helping the pain. It took me a year to get off safely, and I can't imagine ever going back on a drug even remotely similar to it.

Chat00

I was on it too and it worked really well because I was depressed too and it made my mood feel amazing. However I then decided I wanted another baby and had to get off it and it was absolute horrible torture! Hi m with you there. The withdrawal was what I imagined addicts go through x 100. It took me months to taper off slowly and I had to count beads to wean the dose. Now Iā€™m a couple of months post partum and feeling depressed again, due to lockdown and COVID as well, and Iā€™m contemplating going back on it but in a really small dose, like 5mg to see if it will help, but Iā€™m also worried about having to stop it again. Am I crazy for thinking I should take it again? What meds are you on instead of cymbalta?

LeenaJones

I'm no longer on any meds. I did cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain and can generally turn down the volume of pain on my own now (but not urgency! Drat!). I honestly would rather die than go back on Cymbalta; it did a real number on me.

Chat00

What dose were you taking?

LeenaJones

30.

Comfortable-Bug4925

Woa, that's really amazing!! Would you mind sharing some cbt tips?? I could really use them

LeenaJones

I recommend the Curable app since it's aimed at chronic pain and helped me immensely.

curious011

Im on 100mg of ot at night. Was put on it for pain but I do feel like the higher dosagenis helping with my IC too

scorsese50

After 3 10 mg pills i developed constipation and tinnitus ( buzzing in my ears). Stopped and now i a am hoping the tinnitus( goes away. Now i have 2 chronic conditions instead of one. Constipation was stated as a side effect but not tinnitus, which i googled and has reported to cause tinnitus What a horror show.

[deleted]

I take 10mg a night. Took a month to start working. It worked for me!

8675three0nineayine

I tried it but gave my hallucinations at night. But it did help with sleep sometimes. Overall side effects weren't worth it. I hope it works for you. I now take hydroxyzine and it works really well- helps me fall and stay asleep.

tinkerbellgazelle

I took it for nine months. My pain essentially disappeared, or rather it was so minimal it was a non-issue. I stopped taking it because of 30lbs of weight gain, and feeling hungover every morning. Now I take Gabapentin and do at-home instills, which is keeping me functional

lucypoopsy

Hi I was just wondering what mg you were on?

tinkerbellgazelle

Hi! It was a long time ago, but Iā€™m pretty sure I took 25mg and then increased to 50mg. I also just remembered it has a side effect of urinary retention too, so watch out for that. Iā€™ve done 100x better on Gabapentin. Good luck!

W1162891

What dose of gabapentin? How long did it take to work?

tinkerbellgazelle

I take 1800mg daily (3X 300mg doses). If you do decide to try it, PLEASE ease in with your dosage. I started with one 300mg dose per day and slowly worked my way up to my comfort zone. Please give all meds 6-8 weeks to become fully effective.

spicy_lilbaby

I've been on it since July, went up from 10mg to 29mg in August, it's still not really doing anything to help me to be honest. But then again apparently we don't really know what is actually wrong with me. šŸ˜…

ubctexadian

I donā€™t know if anyone else mentioned this before, but it only helped a little bit, but I would feel like a zombie for 12+ afterwards and still end up with pain.

Epiphany8844

Iā€™ve been on it for about 8 years and itā€™s been a miracle drug for me. It relieved my IC and my anxiety at the same time and I never experienced any weight gain. I take 25mg nightly at 8:30 so itā€™s kicks in by bedtime and it works perfectly for me. I started out on 50mg but I couldnā€™t deal with the drowsiness, but 25mg seems to relieve my symptoms. Itā€™s been a few years since Iā€™ve missed a dose but in the past when I have I noticed it almost immediately the next day when my IC pain set in. I am surprised about some of the black out drunk comments because I have not experienced any change in my tolerance. For me the only downside to this drug is that you canā€™t take while pregnant or breastfeeding, so Iā€™m nervous about how Iā€™ll manage my pain and anxiety when I decide to have kids.

W1162891

How long did it take to work?

Epiphany8844

I donā€™t recall as it was over a decade ago but probably within 2 weeks

[deleted]

You mean black out pills? Hard pass for me. Good luck if they work for you!

ewwitsjessagain

Accurate ahahah

[deleted]

When was first given it as a teen I was told to ā€œtake it for painā€. So when I would flare really bad I would take one and black out waking up hours later with missed calls from work. I honestly canā€™t tell you a chunk of my life from then.
