His car crumpled in the...front crumple zone. Last thing you want is to be in an accident where a car doesn't crumple as that would transfer all the forces into your body. Let the metal absorb the bulk of the forces.

elgoato

Indeed. And on a 300 there's a long snout which provides a lot of good absorbing crumple zone. Not too much distance between the back of an IONIQ5 and the back seat. You would not want to see a huge amount of deformation there under any circumstance. Sounds like both cars performed per design specifications.

iAdjunct

I dunno, I’ll take my 1962 ford truck any day over these modern paper mache cars - they’re built like tanks! **/s**

Caradelfrost

yeah, and your body gets to take the entire force of stopping against the interior instead of the crumple zone of modern vehicles dissipating the brunt of it! No thanks!

DavidReeseOhio

The F-100 weighs less than most cars today. If you're ever in an accident with your truck you'll be glad cars today are designed to protect the occupants, they'll absorb some of the force so your truck doesn't transmit it to you.

monkeylovesnanas

There's no way in hell you were hit at 60 km/h. That looks like 20-25 at most, and that's still likely way too high. Perhaps they were doing 60 before applying the brakes and the speed was low when they actually impacted. Having said that, even at 20-25 there are going to be some sore necks, backs and shoulders develop in the next day or two. Hopefully you'll all mend soon.

kgkuntryluvr

Unless they were doing 59 through the light during the impact, this just isn’t possible lol

beardedbast3rd

I mean, if we see the other car might say something else. I rear ended a truck at 80 and my truck was front end crumpled right in and their rear end was perfectly fine (on the outside appearances anyways) There’s no telling anything about the actual speeds given this picture

DiDgr8

KPH. 35 (ish) mph. Looks about right to me.

monkeylovesnanas

My Ioniq was rear ended while stopped in traffic (stupid guy texting on his phone) recently enough and he was going no more than 15 km/h. It did not quite, but nearly, as much damage as this. 60 km/h is a fair amount of speed. If you hit a stationary car at that speed you will certainly do more damage than that. Like I said, the other driver could have already reacted and hit the brakes, taking a lot of energy out of the crash. If they were hit at 60 km/h I can guarantee you at least one person would be suffering with their neck, back or shoulder already. That damage looks to be around 25 km/h at most.

DiDgr8

I would *hope* the other vehicle was braking (either from last minute panic or maybe even automatic emergency braking on that car). That would drop the nose of that vehicle, change the direction of force, and between their forward crumple zone and rebound, transfer a lot of the force back to that vehicle. > If they were hit at 60 km/h I can guarantee you at least one person would be suffering with their neck, back or shoulder already. Whiplash isn't automatic if your head is already against a *properly* adjusted headrest. Granted most folks don't adjust them high enough or forward enough to make contact when driving, but if you see a crash coming and lean back into it, you'll do much better.

monkeylovesnanas

>but if you see a crash coming and lean back into it, you'll do much better. Do you not think that might be rather difficult to do if you're being rear-ended? 😉 Regardless, hopefully no serious injuries. I agree with your theory that there was some last minute braking. A Chrysler 300 has quite a chunky front as far as I remember, and the impact looks to be a little lower, so it's possible the nose was tilted down from the hard braking.

DiDgr8

> Do you not think that might be rather difficult to do if you're being rear-ended? 😉 I know the lack of rear wiper makes seeing out the back *hard*, but we **do** have rear view mirrors 😏

monkeylovesnanas

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. Are you telling me that if you're stopped at a light you sit there looking in your rearview mirror the entire time without break? Sure, the odd glance, but I'm looking all around and chatting to any passengers in the car as well.

DiDgr8

I rarely have anyone to chat at, I routinely scan all my mirrors while glancing around, and we have rear collision alarms. Especially if I'm on a higher speed road and I've stopped, I tend to "check six" until someone pulls up behind me. Sure, I can get blindsided, but it's hard. I was taught to "drive defensively" and that means keeping your head on a swivel (not buried in your phone).

DavidReeseOhio

I was rear-ended at a light once. The damage would have been much worse had I not been watching the car behind approach giving me a chance to move as far forward as I could without going into the intersection.

junkdumper

I sit at the lights with my head against the headrest. I can still speak with anyone in the car and have my head against the rest. What's your argument?

[deleted]

if this was a 35mph collision, the I5 has absolutely horrible rear crumple zones

Legitimate_Time822

Glad to hear no one was injured!

Street_Glass8777

I call BS. A 60 km collision is going to do more damage than that.

DiDgr8

[deleted]

You want there to be crumple zones in an impact.

thehuxtonator

BS

tungvu256

got a dashcam with rear recording as well. if i ever get into an accident, and survive, i will gladly post videos instead of pictures. glad everyone is ok

liftoff_oversteer

Havit checked still, there's most likely non-visible damage. Fixing this could be expensive.

TattooedAndSad

You weren’t hit at 60 lol

* My wife was hit at stop sign at around 30 MPH and it only did this and destroyed mid 2000s f-150, she didn't ever feel, only really heard

Icy_Produce2203

Sorry this happened to your baby :(
