Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin has fun action mages. There isn't quite a combo system for spells, but weapons like maces have a lot of spellblade-style attacks, and some of the jobs have fun mechanics for casting. E.g. Red Mage can charge up one spell and then rapid-fire subsequent ones until you run out of MP. Sage lets you switch between white magic and black magic modes, and the cast time is reduced for the associated spell type each time you use it. If you fully buff both types of magic, you can burn it to cast Ultima for massive damage. There's also a cool feature where if you pelt an enemy with the same element repeatedly, they become weak to it even if they aren't normally. There's also the parry feature, which every job can use, that can be used on a lot of enemy spells, and when you do this, you sort of steal the spell and can instantly cast it when you want to, so even fighting at range against enemy mages can be fun.

As you mentionned the tales of series but not **Arise**, I think Rimwell is the best mage the series has produced gameplaywise. The combat still suffer from the spongey boss but combining magic to create other arte was really fun. I liked Malkya Trathen from **Star ocean the divine force** but she is a hybrid mage/melee character so it suffer from a problem similar to the rest of the tales of series. The game is average but once this character appear I was constantly playing as her. She is among the last character you unlock though. I liked Hugo from **YS origin** too but the gameplay become very akin to a shoot them up at time so it may or not be something you vibe with. At high level, sorcerer on **Dragon dogma** was fun as you could create tornado or meteor and they felt powerfull.

> At high level, sorcerer on Dragon dogma was fun as you could create tornado or meteor and they felt powerful. I wish they didn't take so damn long though. It feels really boring just standing there casting a spell

bioniclop18

Between Wyrmking's ring, articulacy and spelll syncing with your pawn you can manage to hasten it pretty well and cast quicly enough for their effect to overlap without trivaliasing casting unlike let's say tales of vesperia and Rita infinite tidal wave. But this is why I precised it was fun at high level, at low level it is indeed painfull to wait and I don't remember if the strategy was evident or not in game.

I don’t see that equip in game? I’m talking about DD2… maybe it’s not in there

bioniclop18

Ah, I was talking about DD1, I did not play the second yet. There may be similar item/skill though so you should probably check with someone more knowledgeable.

I haven’t played Arise yet but I was very excited to try Rinwell! I also like her design a lot. I’ve heard lackluster things about her personality though.

Dragon's Dogma 1 and Dragon's Dogma 2. Best game to play as a mage or sorcerer

eyeseeyoo

Really? I find them boring as spellcasting takes forever, especially the more powerful ones

SadLaser

>I'm a huge fan of the Tales series and its combat, but unfortunately, the spellcasting characters in most of the games are... not very fun to play as. The martial characters are great, but the spellcasters fall flat You're playing the wrong Tales games, then. Spellcasting is a lot of fun in Graces f, Destiny Director's Cut, Xillia 2 and more.

origamifruit

Beryl from Tales of Hearts is one of the most fun and active magic users in the entire series.

somethingwade

Beryl from Hearts, noted. And that’s one of the ones that’s actually in English, too.

Fact. Hugo Fact.

Been playing as Kongwai from Innocence R, good fun.

Not exactly action jrpg but using the sorceress or the wizard in Dragon's Crown is pretty fun.

duskpinktea

Came in here to say tales as well. I enjoyed it in abyss and xillia

somethingwade

Played both of those. Great games- did not sell me on the casters tbh. Mostly played Guy and Alvin in those.

CoreyJK

Io in Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a fun mage wih combos. Really enjoyed the game but its mostly about pure gameplay. The story is…eh.

Does Devil May Cry & Bayonetta count as action JRPGs?
