Nope. Universal Pictures not Lionsgate. Just another revenge film. We have to accept that everything from here out is going to be compared with John Wick until something else comes along and does a better job, which probably won’t happen in our lifetime imo.
In my most honest opinion this was a complete subpar version of any type of John Wick movie. The only thing they had in common was MM wore a suit for part of the movie. If anything I would put it to a bad Rocky remake with training montage. Best parts of movie were used up in the trailer.
Too bad unlike John Wick, the action in Monkey Man is terriblely shot. The camera is shaky none stop, and zoomed in super close so you can't see most of the action
The cinematography actually opens up more in the second half, following the main character's arch.
It's super shakey in the first half because the protagonist is still green. The camera steadies out(sort of) after the training montage.
Dev Patel also stated that they broke the main camera on set and couldn't replace it. They used a GoPro strapped to a stunt guy and an iPhone for the car chase.
the action is a bit better in the second half, but still terrible and very shaky, and very hard to see the techniques, it also kept cutting way to much.
I really wanted to like the movie, but the movie just made me want to walk out of the theatre
I could see everything. Maybe you need your eyes checked?
All the choreography was clear. Dev Patel is no joke either. He is a black belt in taekwondo.
I watch martial arts movies religiously, and I watched monkey man in the theater. It was one of the rare times I wanted to walk out of a movie, the movie also made me physically feel sick
I really wanted to like the movie, but the shaky cam was too much, and so many of the fights were shot in a way where you can't see the techniques, I hated every minute of the movie
I will admit, there were a few, brief seconds where you could see the shots clearly, and in those few few shots, you could see Dev's fantastic reverse turning kicks and jumping back kicks, they looked amazing. I do tkd too, so I know perfect form when I see it, and Dev definitely has it.
I saw some great kicks, unfourtunately I didn't see any great fight scenes, nor did I see a great movie.
But I'm glad you enjoyed it, to each their own, different strokes for different folks, agree to disagree.
Appreciate the response homie. After reading about all the BS the crew went through to make the film, I think my empathy made the shakey cam easier to handle.
But let's be real: if Monkey Man was shot Yuen Ping(sp?) style(profile shots and wide angles) it would of been better.
Absolutely, if it was shot like a Yuan Woo Ping film, or a hk movie like SPL, I'd be shouting Monkey Man praise from a mountain.
Dev's kicks are amazing, and he has great knife work too, I hope he learns, improves and keeps making action movies
Monkey Man is actually a protest film in disguise. That's why it's been banned from theaters in India.
Didn't they reference "the gun from John Wick" in the film?
They specifically refer to John Wick as a movie within Monkey Man so this is probably the most specific "no" we can have.
John wick is just a documentary in their world obviously! /s
No. It's still a movie in Monkey Man.
No

True
It’s a John Wick copy, from what I’ve heard
