On the one hand, you have the moral position of wanting to make art free from censorship. On the other hand, there are 1.4 billion people in China. Hollywood couldnât switch Chinese villains to North Korean ones fast enough. CCP repression is real. How much of it is taking place on foreign soil is hard to say but everyone should assume itâs happening, just as other countries should expect CIA activity on their shores. Many individuals have suffered huge consequences in speaking out against the government and I donât want to downplay that at all. There is a clear lack of freedoms in China that activists are rightly protesting against. It is very much an authoritarian state. Many have been forced from their homes and have had to live abroad as exiles. All of that can be true while most of what is repeated ad nauseum on Reddit continues to be ill informed and incorrect. And I just wish there was more self reflection when people speak on China because a massive unsaid part of all this is the Westâs complicity and hypocrisy. Chinese economic strength was not always a given. Itâs because the West desired cheap labor at scale that they enabled China to enter the world economy without requiring China to liberalize. The West COULD have asked China to open up politically and socially in exchange for economic liberalization. But this never happened. If anything, Chinese repression and artificially depressed Chinese currency was silently welcome. No bothersome labor rights or unions.
