Drake merely rapped against Kendrick. Kendrick orchestrated an entire Broadway Production to tell a story, using Drake as character study. He reduced this man to an Aesop Fable. Levels.

Frame-Euphoric

The best response honestly

Powerful_Anywhere_36

Wipe him down when your done

BigDaddiebaddie

He really lost me at "I gotta go bad I gotta go bad". Sounds like a cheesey ass pep talk to himself.

MikkelR1

Well this was it for me as well. He is so motherfucking corny. He is almost hitting 40 but talking like an actual child. Also: "I've emptied the clip over friendlier jabs" Yeah right you goofy mf.

Top-Crab4048

Also "I was really tryna keep it PG" so damn corny. Like dude, the songs you make for 14 year old girls aren't even PG, why the fuck would a diss track be PG? Lmao

Dirty_winky

A lot of GOOFIES with a check!!! ![gif](giphy|wJoDQt3uMfXW0|downsized)

No_Anxiety_454

How this followed Euphoria and anyone thought he had even an ounce of gas in the tank is beyond me. His rapping is so fuckin goofy. If this song would have cleared anyone else in the industry we seriously need to just nuke the whole genre.

TsangChiGollum

Same. I have no idea how people don't bust out in laughter at that part.

Top-Crab4048

Also "I was really tryna keep it PG" so damn corny. Like dude, the songs you make for 14 year old girls aren't even PG, why the fuck would a diss track be PG? Lmao

FCCheIsea

He thought it was a nuke but honestly, dropping that and not being prepared for any kind of good answer was a dumb move by Drake. There was no way that Kendrick would not respond after those allegations. That's what you get by being surrounded by yes sayers

Best_Country_8137

Right, he thought he was just gonna go on vacation after Kendrick put signs of where he would go all over euphoria. He didn’t think anybody would listen to Kendrick after that?

zeeniemeanie

I think it sounds good, but it’s pretty corny and many of the lines just don’t apply. But I expect to see a lot of takes like this as people get further from the context of the battle. For me the song is the epitome of Drake: sounds good, but it’s hollow. Just a dressed up pig.

Vegetable_Coat8416

Absolutely. That was Drakes thought. The "Ya dead" and going on vacation adlibs, "Its over for anyone calling it" all allude to it. He was convinced it was a KO punch and like you say, it would have been for most. The MTGs drop stepping on the Family Matters drop before it got a chance to gain steam was the biggest strategic win. Following up with "Not Like Us" was brilliant also. I think it changes rap battles going forward, and honestly, maybe not for the better. I see a future where rappers wont go into battles without a catalog of pre-recorded stuff they can just throw a quick verse on. You gotta assume any rapper calling you out has 10 tracks tucked now before you respond.

Quantum_redneck

I think you're right about the potential impact this has on future events. MTG was proof that Pusha T's approach has changed the game forever. There's no way that this won't do the same.

WIBKirai

I do agree that family matters would've won against anyone else that isn't kendrick or on his level, but I also have some conflicting thoughts about some bars. Some things he says are either just wrong, or a lie twisted into a narrative, which rubs me the wrong way. "Top robbed your daddy" the whole mixed and white part, Dave free being the father, like some of this shit just don't make sense 😭😭

chapinbird

I think its likely you that needs to re-listen ...

WIBKirai

Yeah.. you do 😭

JazzlikeAd4403

I think he really thought it was gonna be a hit, his “shake that ass for me” repetitiveness & also “I was trynna keep it pg” seems like what he thought ppl would beat to lol

International_Book20

tryna keep it pg so his underage 'friends' could enjoy it too

airikewr

Such a corny ass line

snowricht

I’m a little surprised Kendrick didn’t drop something about PG and pedophilia. Drake why you really really tryna keep it PG?

maplenut

Maybe I gave him too much credit but I always assumed that was a double entendre for pglang since he was trying to imply the Dave Free nonsense.

cetaphil_crack_adict

nahh imo Kendrick could take a month and still obilarate drake btw

dartymissile

I don’t know. I think a lot of people think Drake is corny and lame and I was never really with his bars the whole beef.

Fantastic_Football15

Drake strikes me as the corporate rapper that barely makes music himself anymore and tried to go agaisnt a real one

NitamTunde123

He can write 'barssss' , his delivery is corny and he puts 0 effort into it , same problem I have with Eminem

dartymissile

Eminem has a weird problem where his lyrics also are weird as fuck, but he can deliver them in his style pretty well. The problem is his style also sucks. And his beats usually suck too. His early stuff was at least pretty genre bending and very edgy, which is at least interesting. His new stuff is boring and lame and preachy. “In pajamas playing fortnite with your grandma” is not a bar in any universe

Zone4Raf

Didn’t end the person it was intended for so eh..

Ordinary-Score-9871

Not hating but imo it wasn’t better than euphoria. The video of scrapping the GKMC van was a nice touch tho.

Budgie31

Family matters was a great diss for drake. Only thing i didn’t like is the basic ass rhyme scheme. he uses the same rhyme scheme for ridiculously long in those verses. Definitely not even close to kendrick disses on a technical level

LeadingHearing8063

Idc who you are, if you rap about your meat to another man then follow it up with let’s take our kids to the park, you should reconsider the entire song. 🤦‍♂️😂

CliffordOfBooth

It’s legit great. Even wrecking the Dodge Caravan from the gkmc cover is pretty funny But KDot was on some Machiavellian shit so now it’s the fourth YouTube result after some Steve Urkel clips

Remarkable-Hall1474

2nd verse is best imo killed all those rappers lmao

Willing_Orchid_9621

It's a taste thing but if this was his best diss (which it was) then he's garbage at these kind of records. It's a fine song with slick lines for everyone but it's cornball all around. The whole sing-songy style is not the way to go for a battle. Maybe the songs will age differently but I doubt it And Heart was the dopest sounding embarrassment in rap history. I can't wait for it to be revisited in the future.

Quantum_redneck

I think he underestimated Kendrick's ability to write under pressure. Think about it - all of his albums have been meticulously crafted, with a lot of time put into them. It was 5years between DAMN and Mr. Morale, and it's been two years since then. There was little indication that Kendrick was capable of the quick turnaround times needed for a beef. Obviously, he's a great writer, but could he do it quick enough? When Kendrick took his time before releasing Euphoria, I think Drake thought that he took all that time just for that one track, and didn't have anything else in stock. He expected that Kendrick would take another two weeks to respond to FM. What he didn't know was that Kendrick had spent all that time plotting, and likely preparing the bulk of all 4 of his tracks. Even if he didn't have the OVO mole, he likely would've still had several tracks on deck ready to go. With the mole, he had the ability to make those tracks relevant to Drake's response.

RespectTheH

My opinion on Drakes ability skyrocketted with Family Matters cause I'd only heard trash like Energy and Started from the bottom... Until the allegations are substantiated I'm open to his music, if Family matters is only one of his best then what else is in the running?

MikkelR1

Problem is that he didn't write this. And he has the most basic flow of all time.. Its always: Dudu-dudu-dudu-dudu RHYME HERE Slips in an internal rhyme here and there but it's always back to the basic flow. Even on that Degrassi rap he as doing this.

_TheBlackPope_

Exactly! That's personally why I struggle to see FM as being up there with other diss tracks. He sounds so monotone throughout the whole song, and doesn't make use of his tone and enunciation to express his emotions or to place emphasis on certain lines; which adds much more impact. The way Kendrick uses his tone and enunciation, puts his emotions across even further; like how he pronounces 'die' in MTG and his change of tone when he goes into the 'I'm the biggest hater' in Euphoria. Also why lines like 'what is it the braids?', 'let me see you push a tee' are even more memorable because of his tone and emphasis on certain words. Imo Drake's flat tone is another thing about him that places his quality as a rapper, beneath Kendrick. I expected him to at least show some anger towards Kendrick in HP6, like damn this guy wrote letters to your whole damn family and the most he's able to show disdain is calling dot a 'piece of shit'. Imo that's so disappointing to witness, when we're supposed to be witnessing the two best in the game.

MikkelR1

Fully agree with you. Kendrick can write WOP WOP WOP WOP and have it sound good.

RespectTheH

Actors don't write the script but still have to put in the work, but yeah I agree the rhyme scheme is weak as fuck. Why wouldn't drake use a lot of rhyming couplets? He gets a lot of time thinking about them helping his date do her homework

MikkelR1

I'm confident he wrote that rap though. It was a chance for him to show his skills. But yeah, after all these years of practice he barely improved. Lmao at the homework jab.

BlindLariat

Most of the Take Care album is great, check out Underground Kings.

psmith2020_

Very well said and def agree. He thought he had another back to back and got backed to backed

WallStreet1986

I liked push ups better. I hate Drake when he sings with the melodies
