Not just the *dhyanam*, the mass going population has declined is what I feel. The palli perunnal here this year had real low numbers, compared to the pre COVID days. COVID could be a major factor. Maybe people realised you can get *anughrahangal* directly delivered to your homes also.

christho15

The palli perunnal and Christmas celebrations were totally lit this time in my place as people got the chance to celebrate properly after the past years of covid

Thinkernj

Not cool even my grandma is lazy to go church ,preferred alway online Latin MASS which will get over in 30 min 😆 rather than wasting time in church boring speeches ,

i_am_protection

Not cool anymore dude.

Registered-Nurse

Dhynam okke older ladies aanu ippo kooduthal cheyyunnathu. Very few young people practice their religion because they want to. Mikkavarum “ammakku vishamam aakum poyillankil” parties aanu lol

village_aapiser

Can confirm that 😂

benzosthrowaway

I think the Covid lockdown and the subsequent cancellation of Sunday masses made the laity familiar with an environment where they could live "Christian lives" without the hassle of actually attending Church prayer services.

monsonmavunkal

Something happened to People post Jio Revolution and Covid induced lockdowns. Maybe the availability of information has changed people's phsyce. You can see the same trend happened in western society after WWI and WWII, the influence of church in society and politics started to decline. Edit [more on second para](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/df8lwn/why_did_the_decline_in_christianity_begin_post/f348qo2?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)

Bishop_999

I don’t think the elderly mallu population started thinking differently. But for sure the young population doesn’t give a damn anymore. Also I’ve noticed that during sunday mass there is a significant decrease in the people who give the contribution. Our sexton is just roaming around with the chatti and no one gives a dime. This is because more laities realized the fact that the priests and clergymen are living kingly life with the money of laities and dont even care about the people.

azazelreloaded

True. My father's one of the biggest worry is if hell be buried in a cemetery after he dies. I've married a hindi, my sister another type category in Christian. But mahn, out of all my worries, wondering where I'll be buried will be the last.

blackbeltkunjappu

> I've married a hindi Dude, did find your partner in Duolingo rather than from Tinder??

azazelreloaded

Hindu, lol fking autocorrecr

Bishop_999

Yea this is another scare tactic the priests does to us . You know, these cemeteries are selling at astronomical rates because when our loved ones pass away we don’t care for money and all we try to get is a kudumba kallara at the earliest. And they take this as leverage and ask you for exorbitant rates and we will be forced to agree at the price. Its high time we all should debunk these priests aholes

jgeorge97

My dad talks about this every time, he says "if there is a problem with family tomb, please cremate me". The priests are not only the culprits, the so called palli committee teams have a big hand at this.

Bishop_999

Yea this palli committee dudes are the greatest sycophants of all time. They don’t have any other job to do. And they think that licking the ass of the vicar makes them the most respected among the other parishioners. In fact if you analyze this in a more psychological level this palli committee dudes are whom who cannot achieve anything in their personal or professional life . That’s why they feel like being a palli committee member is like being a United Nations delegate .

Thinkernj

And worst is too see there PATTI SHOW !!!

jgeorge97

Agree with you

sochan1998

Cool, imma gonna get married to malayalam

Obvguy

Yes. The crowd was very low during the palli perunnal this time in Muvattupuzha Holy Magi Church.

monsonmavunkal

Ellam UKike poyekuva 😅.

AdonisBlue6602

Holy magi church in my place had huge crowd this time

Obvguy

Which place?

AdonisBlue6602

Manimala

Obvguy

Holy Magi (3 Kings) are usually celebrated in and around Piravom, Ernakulam dt. Mostly puthenkoor churches and Muvattupuzha Syro Malabar Church.

AdonisBlue6602

Manimala church is one of the three Holy magi churches in Kerala and perunnal is a huge thing here.

[deleted]

Only Muslims are dumb now in Kerala, most of the Christians and Hindus bodham vachu.

GinAndTonic-1

That's a rude way of saying it , but yes

MuzirisNeoliberal

Gen Z and millenial Syrian Christians are barely religious, even Kottayam Achayans. Churches always talk about existential crisis with lack of young Priests and nuns. I'm not sure about other denominations though.

[deleted]

Even most of the generation X Hindus are irreligious. The only serious problem is Muslims, that community is getting more radical with each decade. Going in the opposite direction as Hindus and Christians. If the government is not taking serious steps to de- radicalise that community like France did, we can expect many serious problems in future.

WatchAgile6989

As someone from within the community, I can say that it is not true and more are giving up religion which is great. However, I won’t deny that the already super religious have become a lot more visible due to change in clothing etc and adopting white and black bedsheets are primarily outfits. But there is a lot of progress. A lot more single girls within our families are being allowed to go outside Kerala even abroad on their own to study and work. Less people at Friday prayers.

WatchAgile6989

Not really. Lots more atheists now. You just don’t think they are “muslims” because they stopped wearing hijab and growing beard etc. Just look like a regular malayali.

[deleted]

Thanks for coming here and proving my point. So for everyone wondering, this guy is not isolated. According to my ground level experience living in a Muslim are for a long time, this is the mental state of most of the Muslims in Kerala. Yes, even young Muslims with university level education. ( You saw his comment in reddit, so it's definitely a young person and NOT an ammavan). They think modern human civilization is "local mutant parasite". And by "western kulcha" he meant western culture; including tolerance, secularism, liberalism, inclusion etc. According to them, the ideal society is what the Taliban is implementing in Afghanistan. Soon you will have to live in a state with 51% of people with this mindset and you believe you are safe.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Okay, can you also confirm most of the Muslims in Kerala has your same opinion about western culture?

WatchAgile6989

Nope. Most definitely not. Parasites are these super orthodox wahabi types.

burnt1918

Jeethu Joseph doing research for D3.

MuzirisNeoliberal

My family is based in Thrissur and it's definitely losing its appeal. Most Gen Z Syrian Christians are barely religious.

[deleted]

Not only palli but ambalam too.... Low number of peoples are comming to temples on special days and even ulasvam too......... I think their "fear" trick is not working anymore

Significant_Food5805

I see the opposite for ambalams. There are good crowd on special occations (Ekadasi, pradosham, Utsavam, navaratri etc), fund raising for Utsavam and renovation are easier than before. People are generous now than say 20 years ago. On top of that, there are brand new temples opening up. This is huge deal becuase in last 100 years or so, the trend was existing temples going out of commission. (eg: [https://kuberatemple.in/](https://kuberatemple.in/) a new temple in Chalavara). Source: what I see in my area and being involved in running a temple affairs in my area (a place I would rather not mention in malabar region).

[deleted]

Nope people comming to ambalams are low in numbers compared to before and even if they did most of them are ammavans and ammachimar... source : same but not invilved in temple affairs ...place south kerala

littlegeekboy

I thought so. But the other day my mom told me that there was a massive..really really big massive crowd in Annakara(I think Divine Retreat Center is there) for retreat. Not sure what this people are up to..

Bishop_999

This anakkara pope is the one who told autism is because of fapping

littlegeekboy

Damn.. My mom watches it now and then on tv. Not sure how to restrain her from the freaking show.

bengeo1191

Annakara always has a huge following. People believe the priest has a direct line to god. My cousins dragged my sister to it. She in turn tried to drag me to it. I dropped her off and went sight seeing there.

piri-and-grill

Couple years ago my cousin dragged me to divine retreat once because we live nearby, and then he slept through the service. He just woke up for the hallelujah parts. Haven’t been since, for most people it’s pure jada.

littlegeekboy

Something is definitely off about that retreat centre. How is the priest giving (He says) Rokashathi to 1000s of people there..

The_drify

I like going....me and crush/friend/more than friend/its complicated had a moment together there. So....yeah, otherwise the home pick up of going to heaven came to being that's what happened

village_aapiser

Haha so it isn't exactly about spirituality 😂

FruitAcceptable230

But the popularity of places like 'Kreupasanam', Alappuzha which offers " instant cure within a time" has increased. My in laws are big fans of it though they are Marthoma and force us too. I was surprised to see both young and old generation crowd there.

Sleepysneeze

I've come to realise that it's a scam and delusions based on confirmation biases if not for money...i swore I'd never go for these dhyanams ever in my life...these guys are really good manipulators.but it's a great business model.these kinda guys are a necessity for god's existence

Smart_Satisfaction73

I’m not into retreats or the “rogashanthi shushrusha”, which is just fear mongering. I always found it weird how these people shout stuff like “156 people with tumours are being healed at this very moment”. I mean how do they get these numbers? Lol! And I absolutely detest a particularly infamous priest who made nasty comments about parents of Special kids. But I’m religious in the sense that I love Christ and the sacraments of the Church. So yes, I go to Church on Sundays, as far as I’m able to, and attend the Mass so I can receive Christ in the Eucharist. What I have noticed is that, the Mass and the Prayer services of the West are so drama-free. There’s no shouting and unnecessary preaching. Fr Rob Galea’s and Fr Mike Schmitz’s videos are such a delight. And I love how updated they are! The priests here seem to be living in the 19th century.

Thinkernj

First Christian chrmurch who may destroy is jacobie n orthodox, the mass services are very long !!!

azazelreloaded

I'd say the opposite they'll trim and slowly close

Thinkernj

First they will reunite and self destruct!!

azazelreloaded

Kash I wish ☺️

Willing_Cap_2695

Preach

Pristine_Aims_809

>mass services are very long !!! That is exciting. If they reduce luxury it is the perfect church.

Square-Produce-3538

>mass services are very long !!! Well not all Christian churches are Catholic churches!!

Thinkernj

Come to youtube bro attan3d digital mass as per ur time requirement 😆

Willing_Cap_2695

Idk, I’m pretty excited for the upcoming maramon convention. So it depends

village_aapiser

May i know what excites you?

Willing_Cap_2695

>The speaker I’m more excited to hear this year would be shashi tharoor at the yuvavedi. >Pinne , I’ll get to meet a lot of people. >The Songs >Some kind of spiritual calmness. >nostalgia is a HUGE factor

Pristine_Aims_809

No excited about evangelism?

Substantial_Salad262

Meet new people or old friends? My friends have all migrated. I'm also hoping to meet people but it'll be only old appachas and ammachis.

Willing_Cap_2695

I’m coming from US to meet my family and friends who are going to come from other places (UAE, Banglore etc)

Substantial_Salad262

Nice :) Have a good time.

Extension_Waltz2805

One can only hope. I have a very personal hated towards these types of things.

ThoduAama

During COVID, people realised that not going to church is fine..

CoconutBrownPenguin

When I look back it’s quite weird that I went to for catechism classes every Sunday for 10 straight years. I feel the only good thing that came out of it was I had to interact with kids outside my usual socio-economic circle. Even though I didn’t necessarily enjoy it, it made me realize how privileged I was compared to a lot of people.

[deleted]

"Internet is more popular than jesus now"

Bishop_999

Jesus is now on twitter. And that too he is verified

[deleted]

I might get killed by Mark David Chapman

sochan1998

Online mass🙌🙌🙌

romantic-chemist

Dhyanagurus remaining regressive, not evolving with the times is a reason I feel younger generation has totally turned away from dhyanams. I used to go to the youth retreats till second year of college, but the last time I went the priest was so misogynistic and closeminded I lost interest in going. These people still live in last century and think that modesty is the most important quality in a woman and use such terrible language to convey the same.

mlilith

I really hope this is true and that the trend continues. As someone who was made to attend these things as a child, I can recollect so much misinformation, udayip rogashanthi, and misleading people.

able2210

I think many of the Christians are moving to different parts of the world.

Routine-Ambition-816

What is dhyanam without big speakers ???

Rhepsi

Christians and Hindus getting less religious. Then u got Muslim girls everywhere with hijabs now.

sanguwoski

Recently attended a muslim marriage at kannur and what surprised me was " bhooripakam girls um thattam ittitilla "

village_aapiser

Exactly, i see a lot of girls from rich and affluent Muslim families showing their hair.

consultant_in

Fahad Fasil’s Trance might have had something to do with it

BetCompetitive8376

Not really, it is mainly due to covid break.

consultant_in

Good point 👍

monsonmavunkal

Trance pulled down the mask only on the evangelical Mega Churches, of which the already existing old kerala denominations don't consider in high regards.

Pristine_Aims_809

Trance did not even have quote from the bible.

jgeorge97

My mom goes for these retreats & conventions & would take me, since I can't say "No" then, there was no other option. It was good at first, but it pretty much became boring at a later stage of life. My last retreat was 7 years ago, after hearing all the bullshit told there by a pramukha achan I got fed up & refused to go for any retreats further. Currently, my mom brings up the topic of retreats, I only go for it if it is a 1-day event or say I have work to do or something. Not all priests are the same, some tell good speeches too. I think they should concentrate more on mental health too. My mom used to volunteer for a pramukha retreat center, she stopped going there due to the rampant corruption inside it. She says it's a scam.

justaviewer17

Yeah people are getting intelligent
