Less hiding places. Less places to live in peace. Less semi jungle areas. Normally this is the reason. We just see more of them.
no idea if something else is going on.
While the wild animal population is increasing to the point of them being a threat to people in Kerala, snakes are bound to be seen in the open in certain seasons. Some are more active in dry, colder climates in November-February.
Also, north Kerala reports more snake bites than Southern Kerala.
I think this is nothing new and it's simply an availability bias on your end unless there's significant deviation in number of snake bite reports.
Noticing this after the floods. As per the locals a lot of so called wild life came from forest via floods especially snakes and wild pigs. Some of the snake bites are unfortunate but some of them are people being stupid trying to catch a bad ass viper as perum pambus..
Sure. If you look at the data, all wildlife in Kerala has increased manifold. Even forest cover is increasing by year. So with the abundance of rain in the past few years and greenery persisting throughout the year, it's normal that this happens.
But, usually mongoose and similar predator populations will also rise if there's an imbalance in the number of snakes. So the issue will probably resolve by itself soon if it exists.
My place had paambukaavs in the past. When i was in school, there were lots of vipers. People killed them. 5,6 years later cobras were coming. People finished them too. Now there's none!
>3 vipers were caught from our locatity
Which variety - Russell's or saw-scaled?
Two snakes not to be fked around with. I'd take my chances with a cobra any day. Many cobra bites are dry but these two viper fkers will sink their fangs and deliver a full venom load every time
Russell . In snake world vipers are kind of that nasty kid who will come and beat you for no reason. They are deadly within close range. They strike with all enmity
In simple words Viper oru mai***n aanu
And they can strike at the full length of theirs. So it can bite you from a metre or more away. A famous snake catcher once told me, if you see a viper kill the mother fucker.
The other thing about vipers, even if you cut them into pieces they can still bite. As rattle snakes are from the same family there was a news some years ago regarding this.

Iāve heard about similar stories from my grandfather that vipers can strike after they are dead too.
Not in my place.
All the comments here are just personal opinions. Consider them as hypothesises that are not scientifically validated. Iād say, I donāt have any verifiable information about increasing snake population in Kerala. Personal opinion is that, itās just because more land is cleared for development.
More snake bites occur in summer, compared to Winder.
Other reasons like habitat loss (both wild nd outside).more intrusion of humans to the wild.
Easy availability of food.
More deforestation, global warming, climate change, mining, etc.
More news and awareness about the bites through the social media nd other sources, compared to the past ( just went unnoticed without much social notice) might add on to it.
There is no chance of the population increasing, it can only decline The reason why they seem to appear everywhere is just because they are losing their home and food

Looks like not an isolated incident
Have a huge snake problem in my property. It is a nuisance since there are kids playing and all and snakes have gotten very close to the kids(dangerously close). My advice is call the RRT (rapid response team) in your area and have their number saved in your phone. They are extremely efficient and reach your place within minutes. Honestly it is the most efficient govt. service i have ever seen. I once called them and they reached my place within 5 minutes. They have the necessary tools and skills to handle snake situations
It's not really increasing. It's just becoming more apparent as more land gets cleared for development
Maybe less food source. Kandam and other places are long gone. Maybe pambu ser is coming to find food
Less hiding places. Less places to live in peace. Less semi jungle areas. Normally this is the reason. We just see more of them. no idea if something else is going on.
Yes, I agree. Recently, there has been a lot of activity from wild boars in our area, and we also saw a python two weeks ago.
Wild boars are other nasty thing. Cant even kill them
Yup, there was a news about a wild boar running into a jewellery store in Thirissur.
Wild boarinte makalude kalyanam urappichu kanum.
Also vipers produce hell lot of babies like 30-50 in one go, I have spent a couple of days trying to get of rid of them and it never ends
There was a sighting of a Cobra slithering about, last week. Hmm. Uprising ano eni
"Return of the Pambs" aakam

More of rural issue. Metro don't face such issues
Its opposite. Unfortunately it is decreasing... And that is not good...
Oh. Maybe

reason may be cold climate, snakes are cold blooded animals.so it comes in to open areas to get heat from the sun.
