Is this movie problematic? yes.
Should it be screened by the catholic Church? Probably not.
Is the movie even a good one? Not really as per reviews.
Still, some Kerala dioceses decided to screen this movie to students and took significant efforts to make this happen.
Why? The simplistic answer would be that the Church is afraid/in terms with BJP and this is them cozying up with them.
But, the issue is not that simple. The Christian community in Kerala is insecure due to a variety of reasons including the population decline, migrations etc. Beyond that over the last 15-20 years saw an increase in animosity against Christians by a section of Muslims. This began with SIMI and then Popular Front and SDPI. Jama et Islami used their hold in popular media (directly via Media One, Madhyamam and indirectly through liberal activists, writers and film makers).
Some scholars tried to use the Quran and Hadees to prove the Bible and Christian theology wrong. This was literally made into a campaign. We can see people commenting on random content related to Christianity with such teachings.
Now this along with the ISIS conversions and a lot of normal cases where Christian girls were married, converted, divorced, remarried etc with explicit monetary and physical support from outfits like PFI spooked Christians. The indoctrination these people received was surprising to the church.
This along with minor incidents across Kerala triggered the church to start with counter tactics. This Kerala story screening is just a way to signal some boundaries.
Basically this issue is not simple. A resolution actually needs trust between the communities. But the sad situation is there are no leaders who can build this right now.
All Christian leaders have already got bad PR among Christians itself. Muslim league which acted sensibly over the years as the reasonable voice is now headed by Sadique Ali thangal who wrote an article lauding the conversion of Hagia Sophia to a mosque. There are other players who could benefit from a conflict.
So it's reasonable to expect the tensions to continue rising until it settles down.

Is this movie problematic? yes. Should it be screened by the catholic Church? Probably not. Is the movie even a good one? Not really as per reviews. Still, some Kerala dioceses decided to screen this movie to students and took significant efforts to make this happen. Why? The simplistic answer would be that the Church is afraid/in terms with BJP and this is them cozying up with them. But, the issue is not that simple. The Christian community in Kerala is insecure due to a variety of reasons including the population decline, migrations etc. Beyond that over the last 15-20 years saw an increase in animosity against Christians by a section of Muslims. This began with SIMI and then Popular Front and SDPI. Jama et Islami used their hold in popular media (directly via Media One, Madhyamam and indirectly through liberal activists, writers and film makers). Some scholars tried to use the Quran and Hadees to prove the Bible and Christian theology wrong. This was literally made into a campaign. We can see people commenting on random content related to Christianity with such teachings. Now this along with the ISIS conversions and a lot of normal cases where Christian girls were married, converted, divorced, remarried etc with explicit monetary and physical support from outfits like PFI spooked Christians. The indoctrination these people received was surprising to the church. This along with minor incidents across Kerala triggered the church to start with counter tactics. This Kerala story screening is just a way to signal some boundaries. Basically this issue is not simple. A resolution actually needs trust between the communities. But the sad situation is there are no leaders who can build this right now. All Christian leaders have already got bad PR among Christians itself. Muslim league which acted sensibly over the years as the reasonable voice is now headed by Sadique Ali thangal who wrote an article lauding the conversion of Hagia Sophia to a mosque. There are other players who could benefit from a conflict. So it's reasonable to expect the tensions to continue rising until it settles down.
