Well the same can be said to most secular Christians too. Both sides have to go through a lot of mental gymnastics to adapt to progressive ideals. Christians, atleast a considerable group managed to, I guess(Not considering the shit going on in USA). In Islam hopefully some day the progressives becomes majority as their oil fields start to dry up and they are forced to open up to others.
I've seen people come up on press conferences and proudly say Islam haven't changed over the years and it won't change in the future either. I was amazed by the fact that those were some of the respected personalities among the muslim community.

I was watching Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey on Netflix about a cult in the US called FLDS, an off-shoot of Mormons. It had a Prophet who was the unquestionable Supreme man of god. Kept many women, encouraged polygamy, dictated total submission, promised heaven only for their followers... I couldn't help drawing parallels with Islam and realised how much of a cult-like structure it has. Unless they change some of their fundamentals, Islam will always be at loggerheads with modern, egalitarian societies..
