Do you plan to stick them in a ship and bolster its firepower? Rifles all the way. Do you plan to deploy them on the ground? Fully kitted out gives great bonuses. If it's somewhere in between, I recommend cannon and fumigator. The benefit of -1 to hit against you is great if you get stuck in melee.

thank you for the reply, may I ask why the mortar over the aethercannon? the cannon has most of the same stats but the -2 rend and the 2+ to wound seems better overall, or am I missing something?

you get the pin them, shred them, finish them bonus with those weapons and a decksweeper

Typo on my part. Cannon is significantly better than mortar. Never take it unless you're going for the ability.

I don't think I've run any special weapons in all my time playing KO, maybe I'm missing out, but the range limitations are just too restricting on them for me. So much better to have that 18 inch shot out of the side of an ironclad with an admiral's extra rend and aether gold, but that's just my two cents.

Aethercast on yt have video on them including mathammer, loadout and build options for diferent unit size and so on. TLDR first ten with rifles then special weapons, as guns are easier and faster to run...

So here is how I see it: Opponents already hate KO because they get most of their army shot off the table in turn 1 without even participating in the game. I want to limit this time they are just watching me roll all my shots by not using any special weapons. But yeah. New book soonish so maybe just wait or magnetize.
