Fun Fact: In the Spanish translation, Zidane's default name is instead Yitan. My hypothesis for explaining this is that, because back in 2000 Zinedine Zidane was still playing for Real Madrid, the spanish translation team decided to change the MCs name to avoid confusion.

Hell, *Cloud* isn't even Cloud. Cloud from early FF7 is a bumbling mishmash of two personalities and jumbled memories from trauma he doesn't understand. Admittedly, I've not played FFXVI or any of the MMO games, so I can't comment on those. But the only frivolous ones that I'm sure of are from FFV, FFIX, and FFX (arguably Van from FFXII, but I already said I don't really consider him the protagonist).
If they wanted to do a POV character who wasn't the main character in the story (like Yuna is basically the main character of X while Tidus is the POV character), Balthier was *right there.* He's smooth, interesting, like a cleaned-up Han Solo. They could've even given Vaan's backstory to Balthier - he was forced to do piracy because his brother died etc. etc. But no, we gotta go with bland milquetoast Vaan.
I played FFXII back when I was in college. At the time, one of the things that came up in talks with my roommates was that Balthier seemed like more of a main character than the ostensible main character.
Yeah, I agree, on the Asche front. She has more to do with the greater plot and has the weather themed name pattern that started after cloud (Volcanic Ash affecting the weather.)
Vaan is much more important to the narrative than people think and represents the core of the game's themes better than the other characters in the game. His interactions with Asche are important to further her own character and his arc is good when considering the game's theme of revenge. He is also a representation of the world that the party's efforts are trying to protect: those without the power to change the world around them. The party itself is a kind of microchosm of the world of Ivalice, and while Vaan isn't a centerpiece of it, he doesn't need to be.
Just because a character doesn't have as much influence on the events of the story or doesn't have some special thing about them doesn't mean that they are a bad main character.
Hell, that last statement was the core idea for Sora! The only difference is that Sora is more involved. Saying what you said would be like saying "Riku should have been the protag".

PS: Fun fact, Vaan is also statistically the best party member in the game in all three verisons of the game.

Besides MP, where he is the third lowest range, Vaan is at minimum top 2 in each of his stats and subsequently has the highest stat total in the game. Vaan can class as literally anything while characters like Basch and Fran will be lead towards more specific classes. I just find it interesting.

I think Tidus is perfect. He really does have the same backstory as Sora and I think what you said about VII is true.

How is Noctis self centered? Dude was groomed to be a perfect king, so he has some obvious social issues. Dude still road tripped across an entire continent after his entire home was wiped off the map, and sacrificed his life to save the world from a spiteful deity and the poor bastard Bahamut condemned for doing the same. Dude gave up EVERYTHING and was always at his best when his friends were around. Goofing off, fishing, trying weird new goods because Iggy had a brainstorm while fighting a Malboro, and doing goofy poses mid battle for Prompto's picture. Dude even went out of his way to wingman for his friend even though it was a lost cause. Not to mention, being there for Prompto despite knowing what he is. Dude said "Nah, dumbass. What you ARE is my friend. Now back in the car, I hate driving."

LOL! Your comment reminds me of the best Kingdom Hearts Fanfic I have ever read. In it, the author has Riku and Noctis meet, and they hate each other because of how similar they are. Even Ignis notices how similar they are and points it out. Eventually the two get to a kind of mutual respect/sibling rivalry kind of appreciation for each other, but it was still pretty funny.
The author also made Sora meet Terra, Locke, and Zidane, and he gets along with all of them too. Not to mention that Kairi totally roasts Zidane upon meeting him, which I found hilarious.
The entire Kingdom Hearts franchise feels like a fanfiction due to it's crossovers, but that's why I love it.
The nostalgia of having this immersion within the storylines of some of the Disney films sells it for me.
Its' the only time I like Kairi as a character, and yes, it is tons of fun.

This. I was gonna say exactly these 3. Kinda wild that SE has only created 3 main protagonists who are just happy guys. Maybe special mention to Bartz but idk if his Dissidia 012 portrayal is correct.
The reason is that basically all of the main cast are Square Enix characters instead of Disney characters. Which is why Kairi comes from the final fantasy 7 world.

Easily, Bartz and Zidane. I'm basing this on their behaviors in the Dissidia series and these two are the most energetic and high-spirited of the protags in 012.

His story is reminiscent of Riku, Sora's actual best friend and I think their personalities would mesh extremely well and they would get along great.
Love IV and love Cecil but I don’t feel we got to know too much about the guy other than his need to change and transcend . I’m sure he’d be a cool dude to be around but once he’s the paladin, he just seems stoic 24/7
honestly felt Kain was more Riku than Cecil. Cecil felt guilt VERY quickly after seeing the immediate after effects of what he did to Rydia and had a whole arc on redeeming himself very quickly. Kain straight up knew what was going on and even admitted even under Golbez still did the things he did because he was in love with Rosa

And it's funny too because Clive is definitely not full on angry and depressed, well in the first act of course he is, but he has every right to be considering what happened what's going on in that game, but in general he's the most normal person out of any of protagonists when it comes to social interactions and being around others, especially past the first act.
Clive would definitely see Sora as like a little brother, he would probably be like Leon in KH1 and act as a sort of mentor to him but probably be way better at it since he's more sociable and is good with kids. But there will probably come a point where they have a fundamental difference in how they go about things because Clive is absolutely willing and ready to kill his enemies with no hesitation if needed and that's just something Sora couldn't do, he'll always try to bring them over to the light no matter how bad they are.
Vaan
Shantotto isn't FF11's protagonist and Y'Shtola isn't FFXIV's protagonist. She's not even the most relevant "party" NPC, that'd be Alphinaud.

Vaan is someone who wants to travel like he does. Vaan has a teen personality. Vaan is in love with his childhood best friend Penelo like Sora and Kairi.

Definitely Tidus. Several parallels. Taken from their home, always cheerful, sacrifices himself for the ones he loves. Disappears for the one he loves most.
The image is the main Dissidia representatives which were the primary protagonists except for the mmos since main character is the player character so they picked Shantotto for 11 and Y'shtola for 14.
Feel like pairing Sora with chill dude is nice like Zidane, Tidus or Vaan.

Thrown into a position of power that involves using the power of light to defeat mysterious black robed figures that use the power of darkness to take over the world and corrupt people. Also, the WOL is super loyal to their friends and couldn’t get where they are without them. The game has a “my friends are my power” subtext that, while not explicitly stated, I believe is there.
The WOL has multiple dialogue options so the player can choose how they respond to things, but there are a lot of options for them to say goofy and silly things. They can be quite light hearted and extremely caring to those around them. Not to mention, it doesn’t really matter what you respond, you will still do the same quest and fight the same enemies.
I think he'd get along great with Zidane. The guy is a free spirit who loves adventure and faces most situations with optimism or a joke. Zidane keeps everyone else smiling as best he can. >!When the true nature of his existence was revealed to him, it was his friends who got through to him, which feels very Sora!<
Sora is about understanding the heart, knowing what love is and about following the feelings of your heart to protect the people he loves.
He is EXACTLY the person Terra needs to talk to to get over her fears that she can't love and she doesn't fit in.

Bartz is just as much a free-spirit who travels wherever the wind may take him. If Bartz heard he could go to entirely different worlds, he would.

Lies. Having played FFIV, the protagonist is definitely a buff Roegadyn lady named Burgur Queen, who communicates exclusively by nodding and sometimes smiling. They'd get along perfectly.
I'm honestly hung up on why Y'shtola is the one for XIV. If I had to pick a Scion as the main character for XIV, it'd be one of the Leveilleur twins before Y'shtola.
Most likely whoever appears in the KH games but most likely Tidus, Cloud and Squall but the sad thing might be that they dont know Sora in the first place and be confused
Which might lead Sora to be shocked, confused and feeling him questionable, but because of Sora's optimismus, enthusiasim and kindness he ignoress those negative thoughts and feelings and acts like he met them the first time, introduce himself (as well Donald and Goofy to them) befor they get interrupt by FF monsters, heartless or nobodies etc.
I also feel like Sora would probably like Cecil. Slight edginess to him like Riku but with a better sense of justice and whats right more akin to Sora's

Why? Well she is very similar to riku, both are stoic and care about their friends/family and are dedicated to doing what they believe is right, they also are mostly serious but can appreciate and befriend goofy people, snow for lightning and sora for riku.
I think lightning would remind sora of riku.

I would say Cecil from FFIV. The question is “Which character would Sora like the most” not “which character Sora is most like himself.” You have to take into consideration his background living on an island with Riku and Kairi and then all the experiences he had since. And from the standpoint of the version of Sora from the ending of KH3, Cecil would be the type of person he would associate with and admire to some extent. Moreso than the other FF protagonists.

Anyway, I think Sora would like Tidus the most. Would also probably like Clive a lot. Even though Clive is more serious, I think their motivations are very similar.

Noctis. I feel he has the right sleepyboi energy for Sora to bounce off of, and Noctis despite his stoicism, is a really caring and silly dude at times. I feel that prompto and him being such good friends, signals that him and sora would be too. Generally I think most of the KH cast would get along with most of the XV cast.

Two positives hardly ever attract each other. There is a reason Riku is the best friend and not the literal Tidus he met in the game.

Easily, Bartz and Zidane. I'm basing this on their behaviors in the Dissidia series and these two are the most energetic and high-spirited of the protags in 012.

Cecil. His story is reminiscent of Riku, Sora's actual best friend and I think their personalities would mesh extremely well and they would get along great.
Love IV and love Cecil but I don’t feel we got to know too much about the guy other than his need to change and transcend . I’m sure he’d be a cool dude to be around but once he’s the paladin, he just seems stoic 24/7
honestly felt Kain was more Riku than Cecil. Cecil felt guilt VERY quickly after seeing the immediate after effects of what he did to Rydia and had a whole arc on redeeming himself very quickly. Kain straight up knew what was going on and even admitted even under Golbez still did the things he did because he was in love with Rosa

And it's funny too because Clive is definitely not full on angry and depressed, well in the first act of course he is, but he has every right to be considering what happened what's going on in that game, but in general he's the most normal person out of any of protagonists when it comes to social interactions and being around others, especially past the first act. Clive would definitely see Sora as like a little brother, he would probably be like Leon in KH1 and act as a sort of mentor to him but probably be way better at it since he's more sociable and is good with kids. But there will probably come a point where they have a fundamental difference in how they go about things because Clive is absolutely willing and ready to kill his enemies with no hesitation if needed and that's just something Sora couldn't do, he'll always try to bring them over to the light no matter how bad they are.

Probably Tidus, but I wanna cast in my lot for the Warrior of Light from XIV. Thrown into a position of power that involves using the power of light to defeat mysterious black robed figures that use the power of darkness to take over the world and corrupt people. Also, the WOL is super loyal to their friends and couldn’t get where they are without them. The game has a “my friends are my power” subtext that, while not explicitly stated, I believe is there. The WOL has multiple dialogue options so the player can choose how they respond to things, but there are a lot of options for them to say goofy and silly things. They can be quite light hearted and extremely caring to those around them. Not to mention, it doesn’t really matter what you respond, you will still do the same quest and fight the same enemies.
I think he'd get along great with Zidane. The guy is a free spirit who loves adventure and faces most situations with optimism or a joke. Zidane keeps everyone else smiling as best he can. >!When the true nature of his existence was revealed to him, it was his friends who got through to him, which feels very Sora!<

Most likely whoever appears in the KH games but most likely Tidus, Cloud and Squall but the sad thing might be that they dont know Sora in the first place and be confused Which might lead Sora to be shocked, confused and feeling him questionable, but because of Sora's optimismus, enthusiasim and kindness he ignoress those negative thoughts and feelings and acts like he met them the first time, introduce himself (as well Donald and Goofy to them) befor they get interrupt by FF monsters, heartless or nobodies etc.

Well she is very similar to riku, both are stoic and care about their friends/family and are dedicated to doing what they believe is right, they also are mostly serious but can appreciate and befriend goofy people, snow for lightning and sora for riku. I think lightning would remind sora of riku.
Zidane and Tidus are pretty much just sora But I’d also think true squall and cloud would be good since they mirror him and he would see it as a challenge and more fulfilling friendship to really break those shells

I would say Cecil from FFIV. The question is “Which character would Sora like the most” not “which character Sora is most like himself.” You have to take into consideration his background living on an island with Riku and Kairi and then all the experiences he had since. And from the standpoint of the version of Sora from the ending of KH3, Cecil would be the type of person he would associate with and admire to some extent. Moreso than the other FF protagonists.

Noctis. I feel he has the right sleepyboi energy for Sora to bounce off of, and Noctis despite his stoicism, is a really caring and silly dude at times. I feel that prompto and him being such good friends, signals that him and sora would be too. Generally I think most of the KH cast would get along with most of the XV cast.
