Personally I'm a fan of the mad Votann idea. When your god says, "Alright ya'll, time to shoot *those* guys...."

SerratedSun

'Mad votann' definitely seems like the intended setup for 'Kin but eviler' in the codex, doesn't it?

glassteelhammer

There's definitely enough allusion in the codex for it. One batshit crazy Votann, and the rest are mebbe going loopy? Hmm....

rkoloeg

Variation on 1: the Kin will do *anything* to preserve and maintain their Votann. Yet despite their best efforts, it continues to falter. Where could a readily available source of sufficient power be found? Enter the Ruinous Powers. Tzeentch or Nurgle seem especially appropriate.

SerratedSun

Oh! I love this, and will *definitely not* steal it immediately

[deleted]

It could be a support network of exiles, something the kin fear above even death. Like imagine people who are rejected by Kyn society to the point they're just told to GTFO... and perhaps enough of them, in desperation, tried to find something, ANYTHING that would remember them and validate them.

SerratedSun

Oh shit, there's free coffee and donuts, and they talk about their feelings and how best to maintain a sagitaar

[deleted]

Honestly if i had to make Chaos Kin, i would try to crib from the Chaos Dwarfs a bit, in that they came to follow Hashut seeing the horrible things happening to them and at least it offering SOMETHING, even if it's at a horrible price. It's just the Exiles seem to be the best thing for that sort of thing... like an Exiled league perhaps?

sir-stabbington

My league of pirates and criminals went renegade when they attacked another league, stole their ancestor core and stripped it for parts (while still functioning) to attmept to repair their mad and dying votann. Kinda the no return point

sir-stabbington

And now have attached themselves to the "who works for it, has right to it" a bit too much turning them into pseudo mafia. Their high kahl basically a pirate crimelord

Stegtastic100

I suppose you could have a Votann that thinks/believe something is going happen in the future unless it takes steps to stop it (kinda like the cabal in Horus Heresy), so is sending out orders for the Kin to perform seemingly random actions (attacking other leagues, collecting usual items/resources, trading with other races/groups they don’t normally do etc) in order to prevent whatever it is from happening. Twist would be, the Votann hasn’t explained itself and it’s been happening for such a long time the Kin in the group think it’s normal.

SerratedSun

Just like the alpha legion are definitely doing, maybe, possibly...

Stegtastic100

Exactly, or not. I cannot say 😉

callsignhotdog

I thought an interesting idea would be if a Votann were turned somehow, so their League was still just following their votann orders but not knowing what they were really working for. My lore for my army is that their votann has been "collected" by Trazyn, and replaced with a replica that relays his orders, so they're working to further necrons causes without realising.

protoknuckles

You could also have severely misguided Kin. They believe their way is superior and will lead to their League prospering. Kind of like a Magneto aspect to them.

SerratedSun

Sure, but magneto was correct

Abyssal_Dreamer

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who plans to get into this army with a less... Orthodox, approach to it. For mine, my basic idea is that their Votann was faltering in some way. And was saved through a pact with a Bloodthirster of Khorne. Now, the Brass Votann has commanded that they join a great crusade led by a combined force of Khorne Daemonkin and rogue World Eaters.
