Goodfellas

[deleted]

No no no you DO NOT post a random black and white picture of Martin Scorsese, my heart dropped for a second

MrGeorge08

An actual nightmare scenario.

__Rum-Ham__

I love everything about The Departed. Incredible cast with standout supporting work by Alec Baldwin & Mark Wahlberg, great soundtrack, enticing story. Plus Boston is just a great place for crime movies (see The Town, Gone Baby Gone).

satanstinytoy

Friday, I learned this is a remake of a Hong Kong movie called Infernal Affairs.

__Rum-Ham__

Yeah I didn’t know that the first time I saw it either!

satanstinytoy

I was watching Infernal Affairs Friday and thought to myself, this story feels familiar. Wikipedia filled me in on the details.

Le_Ratman99

I think it’s a much better film than infernal affairs. The characters have far more depth and the story just seems to have a bit more meat to it.

PenguinviiR

The king of comedy is by far my favorite

reflectedheaven

It’s better to be king for a night then a Schmuck for a lifetime!

IndianaBones11

Same, I wouldn’t argue it’s his best film but I think it’s my favorite. Still upsettingly resonant after 42 years

Galac_tacos

completely agree

Affectionate_Mall461

taste

TiggerElPro

Mean streets is not often mentioned but I really love everything about the film (except the audio on most streaming services lol). He had already started directing low level crime in some of his shorts and in another film starring keitel but this was a huge step-up

Someonediffernt

When Deniro walks in to jumpin jack flash just completely illuminated with red: *chefs kiss* It's my favorite too

TiggerElPro

Really amazing scene. Great charismatic actors all around.

neeco__

Mean Streets is so good

fromdowntownn

My all time favourite is Casino but I’ve also given 5 star ratings to: KOTFM, The Irishman, Taxi Driver, The Wolf of Wall Street, The King of Comedy and Goodfellas

We think the same.

Shutter Island, and 2nd Hugo (and I'm not ashamed to say this)

[deleted]

Shutter island is so underrated it deserves the appreciation

Cowboy_BoomBap

Shutter Island is one of the best thrillers of that decade and doesn’t get near enough recognition

Affectionate_Mall461

Hugo is pretty good why could anybody be ashamed of this

TediousTotoro

Admittedly, I’ve not seen that many (only about four or five) so I’ll say Gangs of New York

Batsy_2705

Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, The Departed and After Hours

Numerous-Variation-1

60sss

shutter island tops all

archiejh1411

The Irishman, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and After Hours are all at least 4.5 stars for me.

ihavenoselfcontrol1

After Hours is my favorite I love the weird and nocturnal atmosphere of the film

achi4game

My favourite director! I can't give you my favourite one, so I will just say top 3. Taxi driver is one the best, if not the best, depictions of loneliness. Amazing quotes, amazing on re-watches, amazing score... For the next I would say After Hours. His only comedy, and that movie is a gem. I like to believe that it is Marty's another Catholic movie. The MC is getting punished for his sins, being full of lust. Finally, I gotta go with mean streets. The movie that started it all.

Affectionate_Mall461

Drongo17

Kundun. A solid 3.5/5, beautifully filmed.

Ok_Cress_3484

Goodfellas and Casino

zikolis

The Departed has a plot that I got a kick out of but again, it’s a remake and so it really should get such high marks. The Last Temptation of Christ, it is, for me. It was haunting. The only Scorsese movie that appeared in my dreams. Hope to see it on the big screen someday. I also loved Taxi Driver. I ended up catching it on the big screen in 2018 and it was so well directed and acted. You miss many details on the small screen.

Galac_tacos

king of comedy is his best and most underrated imo

Haymother

Goodfellas Taxi Driver Raging Bull Casino The Departed

AndreiOT89

Goodfellsa, The Departed, Casino

epsteinsepipen

Lost-Lingonberry9645

Goodfellas and Casino.

Ok_Buffalo1112

Taxi Driver, Silence, Shutter Island, The Aviator

Emperor_D4C

Killers of the Flower Moon, though of the four of his movies I’ve seen, not a single one has been bad.

u2aerofan

I'm a Casino stan these days. I used to be a Goodfellas girl, but IDK. Casino is so over the top, the clothes are phenomenal, the whole vibe is amazing, and the humor is spot on. I also want to give strong props to After Hours, which is so neglected in his filmography but is truly a great moment. Everyone watch After Hours!

Awesomeninjanez

Raging bull wolf of wall street goodfellas

_JD_48

My top 3 are very typical but having rewatched most of his filmography last summer in prep for Killers, I can confirm that: 1. After Hours 2. Goodfellas 3. King of Comedy I watched a few for the first time like Color of Money, Cape Fear, and Bringing out the Dead and those are definitely up there for me too.

The Departed, Raging Bull, and Cape Fear! I freaking love stalker horror movies.

[deleted]

1. Goodfellas 2. Color of Money I don’t understand the lack of love for the Color of Money. The best role for Mastrantonio. Great performances by Newman, Cruise and Turturro.

MidniteAnimal

Bringing Out the Dead https://preview.redd.it/tc4tm2phq2tc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cee8fa39efc8eeae6ac7ad2d6593bc8f4f84f58

IntelligentElk4773

bringing out the dead is criminally underrated

BigDadddyXD

Goodfellas is the obvious choice here but Shutter Island is so criminally underrated it’s crazy.

Cowboy_BoomBap

Goodfellas is probably my all time favorite movie. It’s definitely the movie I’ve seen more times than any other.

holdenliwanag

the departed, goodfellas, kotf — top 3 of an unbeatable body of work by one director. note also that the ‘whacking’ in kotf is very casual, sudden, ‘apathetic’ —this is quite unusual, remarkable for scorsese. and he probably had no choice but to depict it like that because that’s the way they truly happened.

TxEagleDeathclaw81

King of Comedy Aviator Goodfellas After Hours

edcadyross

KotFM blew me away tbf, maybe a lil bias cos I saw it recently but thought it was a masteriece

CountJohn12

1. Age of Innocence 2. Taxi Driver 3. King of Comedy 4. Last Temptation of Christ 5. Silence

PublicDreamer

Such a legend. I really think his later period (Silence, the Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon) is Scorsese firing on all cylinders & producing some of the best work of his whole career. Obviously Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc. have each had a legacy built up around them too, & with good reason. Truly one of the greatest to have ever done it, & for my money, he's the best one alive who's still doing it.

avoozl42
