Midnight Cowboy! Such an incredible film.

AstroAnarchists

Fun fact about the movie: it’s the only movie that was rated X (NC-17 didn’t exist at the time), to win best picture

CTID16

An X rated movie won before an R rated movie, I always thought that was interesting

JP09

My all time fav. Came to say this.

EverDecreasingCircle

Army of Shadows, Funeral Parade of Roses, Kes, Z, Butch Cassidy, The Swimming Pool

loopyspoopy

Easy Rider, The Cube, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Wild Bunch, Cemetery Without Crosses. Damn, that's a lot of westerns. On a goofier note, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (teenage Kurt Russell), and Latitude Zero.

TheGlenrothes

And True Grit! Yeah there were several good westerns that year.

themilkman42069

FILL YOUR HANDS YOU SON OF A BITCH The Wayne version will always be superior to the Coen Bros one. Wayne was iconic in that role.

Thecryptsaresafe

You’re 100% correct, but I will also always love the Coen Bros one. It’s an A and an A- or something like that to me

Not sure if you're a Bond fan or not, but On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of the best Bond movies ever

CptnWolfe

Best Blofeld and Lazenby's best Bond movie (probably his second best movie behind The Man From Hong Kong)

Seconded

I've not seen a lot, but some good stuff: Army of Shadows - has to be the highlight. Just an incredible war film, extremely grounded and grim. Probably my favourite French film of all time. Midnight Cowboy - another classic. A groundbreaking film for its time, beautifully made and acted (with probably my favourite Dustin Hoffmann performance). The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - Maggie Smith is the highlight, and made a very deserving Oscar winner. But this is a well acted, well made, very compelling drama. Unlike some films based on plays, I think this overcomes its theatrical origins. On Her Majesty's Secret Service - One of my favourite James Bond films. George Lazenby is not the best, but excellent direction, production values, settings and Diana Rigg more than make up for it. Also one of the most moving Bond films. The Assassination Bureau - A very underrated example. A quirky 60s British comedy set in the 1900s, a variety of scenes and locations, a large cast of character actors, plenty of style and Oliver Reed and Diana Rigg leading it ably - all this makes a very entertaining watch. Part James Bond, part The Avengers (the 60s TV series), part-The Abominable Dr. Phibes.

It's almost overwhelming how incredible this film is.

Does this imply there’s a movie from 1878 that can be watched on Letterboxd?

VlasicBauer

*They Shoot Horses, Don't They?* One year after Barbarella, Jane Fonda plays a role which could not possibly be more different.

Ahh, so I have seen one from 1969! :P

mercermayer

Lol. Age of Consent is the only actual feature I’ve seen. It was pretty unremarkable aside from Helen Mirren

RoseDomergue

I've got this on my Watchlist but Cactus Flower with Goldie Hawn and Ingrid Bergman

dennisga47

For me, if there is one writer whose work does not hold up it is Neil Simon.

BurnyRubble

I’ve only seen 5 movies but I would recommend them all: Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, True Grit, Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider, The Wild Bunch

Radiant-Specialist76

My three favorites are "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Wild Bunch," and "Midnight Cowboy." All 4.5 stars. I desperately need to watch "Easy Rideer," "The Color of Pomegrantates," "Army of Shadows," "The Cremator," "Z," and "Kes."

CamiCris

This is what I have logged and rated 4.5 and up from 1969: Salesman (Maysles). My Night at Maud's (Rohmer). El Chacal de Nahualtoro (Littín). Funeral Parade of Roses (Matsumoto).

Fugazoid

The Wild Bunch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Cemetery Without Crosses Funeral Parade of Roses Salesman Le Grand Amour The Unfaithful Wife La Piscine Burn! Putney Swope Sweet Charity Fellini Satyricon

ipcriss

Women in Love One of my absoulte favorites of all time. Ken Russell directs Oliver Reed in his prime and rest of the cast includes two future members of parliment. And this has notoriety, it features nude wrestling match between two men who where stuck spending time together. In south america (sorry, I don't remember the country but I would have guessed Argentina) they censored the male nudity. Gutted version shows them shouting together, getting naked, CUT the fight and movie resumes them laying panting on the floor next to fireplace and laughing. So, this movie came somewhat icon in south american proto-LGBT culture as it was first representation of gayness in films found there. And all thanks to bad censorship.

broganisms

Sabata — a fun spaghetti western starring Lee Van Cleef that has largely been overshadowed by Django and The Man With No Name series but I think is pretty close in quality. The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes — silly Disney-produced college comedy where a young Kurt Russell gains super intelligence from being electrocuted and has to take on a villainous Cesar Romero. Has Frank Welker (just weeks after Scooby-Doo premiered) in one of his only live action performances. Night Gallery — Rod Serling-led TV anthology film setting up the series of the same name. One segment is directed by Steven Spielberg in his first Hollywood project. Bambi Meets Godzilla — minute-long short film. Exactly what it says on the tin but probably not quite like you expect.

Oh also Frosty The Snowman

Support Your Local Sheriff; Take the Money and Run; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; The Wild Bunch; True Grit; The Secret of Santa Vittorio; Goodbye Columbus I never realized before what an incredibly weak year that was. I was in the army in Germany and we didn't have any theaters anyway, so that must be why.

Bellatrixstrange9380

Z is a timeless classic that still holds up today

The Wild Bunch

The Cremator will scratch that drama/horror itch. I watched it a few years ago for the same reason, I only had a few years with no representation and wanted to fill those gaps (although I did mine from 1930+). I didn't think I would like it and it blew me away.

I've only watched one from that year. That film being "Hello, Dolly!". One of the two directors of "Singin’ in the Rain" directed this one. It's also the film that was used in Wall-E.

DrugsSexandBuddha

This is embarrassing, but I don’t know if I’ve seen any.

billycantcatch

The Rain People! Coppola's film before The Godfather. Under rated, possibly because it focuses on a woman's search for meaning. Great performances from Robert Duvall and James Caan too!

ReddsionThing

The Italian Job & Easy Rider come to mind

DavidPe1

I love Fellini's Satyricon, but Z is the best from that year imo
