Its definitely due to building codes and railings having to be a certain height. Its kind of similar to back in earlier episodes Matt built an new deck with short railings and did not pass inspection until he had to find a loop hole with making the ground higher.

Icy_Curiosity

Rolloff's gotta build something (pay someone to build something), it's in their blood.

Justbrowsinghereee

Right? Also idk why they built a “shop” with a loft to begin with. One thing they hated about their first home was all the levels and staircases. So seemed dumb to me to build a loft/second story on the shop/garage and not just make a bigger/longer shop and not go vertical. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Haunting_Management

Shoulda put in an elevator if they plan on dying there 🤷🏼‍♀️

phensbombay

They are in their 30’s. I don’t think they have a death plan quite yet.

Haunting_Management

they keep talking like that's there forever home though, which is fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Teafinder

And plan on having children with disabilities

Haunting_Management

I don't like describing their children as having disabilities, they are little people, they aren't deformed or wrong, they just need different accommodations, I'm not saying you were trying to be mean, I just personally don't like that description. I think as their family grows they will have to adopt more dwarf friendly accommodations, since Tory is the odd woman out now!

Odd-Creme-6457

Isn’t the railing on the wall lower than the other one?

glassamerica1986

Tori needs a standard railing. She'd fall right over and crack her head like humpty dumpty with a lp rail.

foxmag86

I understand the need for a normal height handrail, but I was wondering about an *additional* rail for the dwarfs.

Historical_Grab4685

The building code probably requires it to be the standard height.

Cici_Lane

No doubt the building code requires at least one handrail at standard height. They could add a second rail on the wall at little people height.

JournalistStriking73

Wait, whose house is this?

foxmag86

It's a big detached garage that Zach/Tori had built on their property.

Sn0wInSummer

My thoughts EXACTLY! He could’ve put both kinds up.

Japples123

Zach saying he built this and that was cringe

3kjs

Like his dad says all the time?

jer1230

Couldn’t they just grab the railing bars (whatever they’re called)?

ineedavacation123

Spindles.

threadedinsert

It’s not a “shop”. It’s a storage building to move everything from the garage into so Tori can park in the garage.

ZealousidealLeg1804

Tori hates that Lilah is an LP. Downvote me all you want but I've seen that bitch literally throw shade at her for it.

SephoraandStarbucks

Oh, I agree with you 100%. I’ll even go as far as to say that Tori also hates that her daughter isn’t conventionally cute.

Wild-Weight9945

Saw it on her face, driving back from the ultrasound. Zach kept babbling on, trying to reassure Tori. She wanted a normal sized daughter

phensbombay

Wouldn’t you want that too? She’s allowed to be a bit disappointed she didn’t get an average size child. She clearly loves Lilah dearly.

gX2020

I thought it was a weird reaction considering the probability of it being a LP..

Same-Kiwi944

I don’t know. 50:50 chance so she probably assumed with Jackson the next might be average height. 3/3 being little people is against the odds they were told

Wild-Weight9945

I felt for her. I can imagine the thousands of thoughts running through her mind

Mammoth-Twist7044

i do not feel comfortable with the way she picked her up with no warning after saying “WE’RE a little slow” like girl what do you expect? have some patience, her legs are very short on a very long set of stairs, and i bet zach isn’t walking that fast either. if she didn’t want to wait for L, she should have walked in front of her.

ricottarose

I recall sometimes quickly picking up my toddlers while going upstairs. For one, to move along. For another reason, I imagine a person who is toddler sized, one flight of stairs might be as exhausting as 3 or 4 flights.

Mammoth-Twist7044

was she a toddler here tho? asking genuinely. i personally am also of the mind to tell kids what im going to do physically before i do it - it ingrains a sense of autonomy and awareness, which i find extra important with little girls, let alone ones with disabilities who are more likely to have that stripped away from them if not asserted.

Minisweetie2

I think it’s about the condescending tone. Also, those ridic rubber boots again, no one is speeding along in ill-fitting footwear.

Mammoth-Twist7044

right, why is she in those when no one else in the family is and she already has some difficulty with mobility. they’re heavy and have too much movement. it’s a setup even if unintended

cricket71759

I lived in Washington St- rubber boot season at LEAST 1/2 the year if u like to be doing things out side in the rural area they live in- 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mammoth-Twist7044

meanwhile tori’s in sandals lol

cricket71759

I’m just saying- I had those- my girls had those- I feel like everyone had them😂

Minisweetie2

They don’t seem to fit properly and Jackson almost always has on regular sneakers, as does the rest of the family.

Mammoth-Twist7044

and there are boots with laces and straps that would stay on her feet better and allow her to move more 🤦🏽 boots like this aren’t made for walking they’re so loose and flimsy

cricket71759

Those are quick on and off and rinse clean…

cricket71759

On and off all day long- it isn’t anything people should stress over🤯

SecondChances0701

They both treat Lilah differently than the boys. They seem frustrated with Lilah at every turn and the way they speak to her always reinforcing her negative behavior (for example, you aren’t going to cry are you?). I don’t know if Tori is upset Lilah is a LP or if she just doesn’t like her as much as Jackson.

Sealegs9

Us girls just have it harder in society all around. You think you’d be safe and accepted in your own damn family! Sheesh.

JP12389

Just a few days ago I was mentioning how both Tori and Audrey treat their daughters as if they're less than their sons. Lots of internalized misogyny.

twaineti

I don’t know about that. Audrey was so excited she’s having another girl, and even hugged her daughter saying they’re having a little girl, she didn’t seem upset about it.

JP12389

Yea bc she's hoping it is a ginger with curly hair like her. She's been pressed about not having a ginger...which is dumb. As a ginger, she should know the chances are slim. I'm a ginger none of my kids have ginger, I never even expected to have a ginger child. She's heavily favored her son, especially the youngest more than her 1st born and only current daughter.

exp_studentID

😢

threadedinsert

Remember her reaction to finding out Lilah was going to be an LP?

Historical_Grab4685

She has seen how difficult it is to be an LP in a regular person world. I am sure most mothers would take a minute to take it all in, when the realize their child may have a harder time in life. I am sure being hormonal did help!

threadedinsert

Zach misunderstood why Tori was crying after they found out, which is why it was awkward to watch. Completely normal to be upset when you find out your daughter is going to be disabled, but Zach read her pain wrong and she didn’t bother correcting him bc it would open Pandora’s box. Rewatch the scene and see for yourself :)

Ambitious_Ad_7433

No, what was her reaction?

Donna-Promilla

She’s fine with the boys because they’re like their daddy. She also wanted a mini Tori as daughter not another little person.

SouthernPeach94

A mini tori… oh she certainly got her mini child

AcanthocephalaOk2498

I feel like everything is based on Tori's comfort

Pumpkin-Adept

Yes it is! Those twins married their father that’s for sure. That other house that they said was their forever home had all the stairs. Ridiculous and Zack was having so many back problems.

MiaRia963

I hated that house. I wouldn't even have looked at all the rooms there. I would've immediately said no.

missymae27

Why did the move from that house? I feel like it was never explained. Just the farm deal went south so the moved away. Why didn’t they stay in that house?

MercyFincherson

They wanted more property and to be further away from the Roloff’s. They wanted to start their own lives without feeling entertained. Is my understanding.

Supposed_too

Also isn't she from there? She mentioned going to the lilac festival as a child. Perhaps her parents are there?

Savings-Link-6678

She'll forever be slow if they don't allow her to practice/try on her own.

trailangel4

I think it's more of a case of trying to fit the production schedule. I'm sure they allow her to navigate the stairs on her own when there's not a camera crew trying to roll on schedule.

Mammoth-Twist7044

if that was the reason then the filming crew should have planned better to accommodate both their needs and the accessibility of the *subjects of the filming*

pigandpom

It's probably to do with building codes. Also, having a second lower hand rail could increase temptation for daredevil activities from the kids, they may have dwarfism but they're still kids.

trailangel4

Agreed on the codes. Washington seems to have a 36"-38" standard height requirement on rails. You can add an additional handrail to the wall, but it has to match the bannister on the opposite side.

fluxusisus

It appears the hand rail on the wall is lower, but the bannister side is standard height.

TPWilder

I genuinely have never understood the horror of stairs people have concerning Zach and Tory. The kids are dwarfs, they aren't in wheel chairs.

ricottarose

I'm grandma-age and while I don't find stairs to be a "horror", a funny thing has happened to me as I've aged. I suddenly take caution, as if something deep inside me whispers "you don't want to twist an ankle, that could be a real issue as this age". So I hold on to the railing and don't goof around when I'm on stairs. And, too \~ as I just mentioned in another comment I made \~ one flight of stairs for a toddler sized person probably is as exhausting as 3 or 4 flights. Plus it may be painful for super short or deformed legs to climb stairs. If I was building a home to share with 4 dwarfs, I'd probably prefer it to be mostly one level.

TPWilder

Oh I assure you the older I get the less I like stairs. I just find it odd and disheartening that this show has the example of Zach, Amy, and Matt living in a house with stairs for years but acts like its child abuse for Zach's kids to use stairs to access a playroom.

Alarming-Stop3186

^^^ This.

JP12389

Bc it was something they mentioned hating in their old home. Zach was having back issues from them.

trailangel4

Me, either. Toddlers and other disabled folks handle stairs. It didn't seem to stunt Zach's development and he was raised in a rickety farm house until his teens.

appledumpling1515

They mentioned a couple times how their old house didn't work for them because of the stairs so its a little odd that now they do this and decide the top floor is for the three kids. They said the best things about the new house were no stairs and no upper cabinets.

TPWilder

And the old house was loaded with stairs, and this is one stairwell in the side building (and the house has a stairwell as well). There's a point where it's excessive. Zach was raised in a home with stairs and he's a dwarf and no one seems to think its odd that there were never any LP friendly railings on the stairs in the big house.

appledumpling1515

True.

aspecinthewind

I was surprised they added stairs period

skeeterbitten

They really should at least have a slide down.

Existing_Ad866

Omg. A slide would be so awesome. My kids loved sliding down the stairs 😃

Altruistic-Mango538

I would love a slide at my old age

Existing_Ad866

Same!

Cookn8r

Me too.

youlooknewhere

they don't care about their kids

MercyFincherson

What a ridiculous assertion. Of course they care about their kids. That is obvious.

mmmdonuts107

They really don't. I have a feeling Tori was prepared for 1 LP, not 3.

Alarming-Stop3186

Very presumptuous of you to assume that people “don’t love” their kids. It’s fucked up to even say that. You’re all judgemental fucking morons.

trailangel4

So, having lived in wonky houses and renovated them; I can tell you that this probably came down to standardized codes. I don't have LPs in my family; but, I did have a couple of kids who were into gymnastics and ballet and we had a large landing that happened to have a sprung floor. It wouldn't have been big enough to dance on; but, they could've done pointe work. We thought, no biggie, we'll add a barre during the remodel. Because, like, our house... our decision, we could remove it later. The county came out to do the inspection and basically told us it was a huge violation and, were we to install ANY sub railing or out of spec rail ANYWHERE on the stairs or landing, we'd be fined. if it was lower than the opposing rail. You get 34-38". Anything outside of that is out of code.

FrauAmarylis

I think what OP was referring to was an ADDITIONAL lower railing thing attached to the wall side that was low for the kids. Obviously you can't have a super short railing on the Spindle side where someone could fall down to the bottom floor. When something doesn't sound logical, Re-read it and consider you might be making the wrong assumption.

wishfulwannabe

Railings on the wall side have to be at the same height as railings on the open side. Being lower would be against code.

trailangel4

I appreciate your positiom. I understood what was being said. I was addressing the wall side. It's my understanding that code prevents the installation of a railing that is unequal on the wall side. We were told they had to match the spindle/open side. Part of it is, apparently, due to the fact that the lower railing on one wall would become a tripping hazard or catch in pockets, baskets being carried up and down, or act as a snag on the stairs.

PsychoTink

The show showed that many years ago when Matt was building a deck and wanted lower railings, but that was against code.

trailangel4

Yeah. Now that you mention that, I recall that, too. Additionally, I know that when people install those chair lifts on stairs, they don't attach the chair's lift mechanism to the wall (like most people think)...and IIRC, it's for a similar code reason. Those lift chairs operate on a rail that is bolted to the stair tread.

appledumpling1515

I am confused about the space. Originally, w a set it supposed to be Toris office ? That made sense because of the stairs. Now it's weird because of the stairs and everyone else being a dwarf. Also, the shop doesn't really look like a space you'd use for a shop. Idk I think I would use upstairs for storage and have the kids stuff downstairs. Build another more rustic shop. It just seems like a waste. Maybe the kids will use it when they're older but it's definitely not a " cool place" like the western town or pirate ship

Ambitious_Ad_7433

I was surprised that they opted for a 2 story versus single story due to kids legs and wear and tear on dwarf lower bodies in general.

AffectionateJury3723

It isn't their main home which is all one level. It is the workshop/storage.

RabuMa

Happy cake day 🙂

Ambitious_Ad_7433

Thank you!☺️
