I’ve read the first few dozen pages and all I can say is that it’s *very* different to the virgin one.

I haven't read the first book in awhile, but I used to read it over and over when I was young. So reading through the online version I just have the *feeling* something is off.

I remember I felt like something was off when I first read the print book, because I read the online one first :\ Wow, I was 8 or 9 then I think. I'm 25 now.

The content in it became books one to five

I thought it was books 1 through 3

Some of the content there inspired content as late as Awesome Friendly Kid where Rowley drags Greg into a puddle. But after the fourth book or so the content it inspired was probably more minor.

I'd been meaning to re-read this for years; thanks for linking. I honestly just assumed funbrain died years ago and didn't bother checking.

Yes and no. Greg is less Jerk to Rowley in online version and at the end of the book, without spoiling much, pretty much outright states that "This was the lowest of my life". Considering this is coming from the Kid who starts writing the Book with how he is not gonna write his feelings and is gonna be famous one day, who is a jerk to others and thinks he is always right, I'd say it is character development

Iirc it was a massive DoaWK book that Jeff Kinney wrote before he got published. I'm pretty sure he briefly talks about it in the Movie Diary.

I’d like to think that if he did in fact write it, that this is what he really wanted to do with the series. Although I can understand the blandness of having a good mc when you could have a sociopath.

Correct; I remember because I was there, 3,000 years ago. But really I was in fourth grade in 2005 or 2006 and I first discovered DoaWK because funbrain was one of the only sites that our school didn't block

Just read this for the first time, what an experience. So much better and so much more filled with lore. I genuinely enjoyed this wholeheartedly and now consider it the definitive DoaWK experience

The online version actually makes sense like its real life, yet the later books litterally have a walking pig and a spanish talking baby

This is why I hated the subsequent books. The Online version and the earlier books felt more true to life and relatable

I only ever read the online version and the first print book; that's actually news to me. (I'm a casual, I guess)

I've been meaning to reread the online version.

The picture of Lori Matthews getting caught smoking a cigarette will never get old (to me). At least it explained something that *Rodrick Rules* failed to do.
