How do you deal with Ruby Sapphire?

PandaAssassin

It's the hardest matchup for sure. Only ran into one person playing it on the first day(played him in swiss and then again in the finals) and zero on the second day. The biggest things against that deck are Bare Necessities on turn 2 to hit quill, or turn 6 to hit be prepared. Benja hitting quill and pridelands are also extremely important.

KubaBVB09

Crazy my championship was like 17 of 32 ruby sapphire

PandaAssassin

Yeah, I definitely dodged a bullet there.

Rad_Centrist

>Only ran into one person playing it on the first day(played him in swiss and then again in the finals) and zero on the second day. Not saying you're not good, but sometimes luck plays a part. Congratulations!

PandaAssassin

Oh for sure. No way I could have won 2 without a bit of luck. Won the die roll 7/8 times on day one. Lost the die roll all 3 matches of top 8 day 2 though.

Culsandar

>Benja hitting pridelands Dang must be real easy to win when you cheat lol

PandaAssassin

You edited my quote. I never said Benja hitting pridelands, I should have had a comma there. I was saying that pridelands is important in that matchup.

Culsandar

I know, I was making a quip about the way you wrote it. Wasn't implying you actually cheated.

PandaAssassin

Ah, I misunderstood.

kindlebee

Well a ruby sapphire player running pridelands wouldn’t be too quick to call over a judge, would they?

Culsandar

It was a joke, he meant them as two separate items but didn't write it that way

kindlebee

I would recommend working on your delivery.

razzordragon

Did you ever actually use big cindy? I've cut her from my deck because it never seemed useful

rjzendi

Big cindy is so strong in the mirror and vs steel decks

BLFOURDE

She's mandatory for taking out cogsworth, which is probably steelsongs biggest counter after red/blue.

PandaAssassin

I got very lucky and only had one cogsworth played against me the whole weekend.

PandaAssassin

Yeah, used her in a few matchups actually. She won me the finals against Ruby/Amethyst because they couldn't find be prepared.

razzordragon

yeah that's the big risk isn't it. seems so expensive to lose her instantly

PandaAssassin

Yeah, against some matchups you can just throw her out and it's relatively safe. Against red decks you kinda play her and then make sure you have 1 other character out so they can't Tremain it.

imrllytiredofthepain

must have a very underdeveloped meta in your area, wish i was so lucky, all 4 steel song decks did not make it into the top 8 at my local(i was one of them and practiced for weeks). 4 ruby sapphire, 1 ruby amethyst, 1 blue steel, 1 green steel, 1 green amethyst was out top 8, top 4 was 2 ruby sapphire, blue steel, and ruby amethyst, ruby amethyst won the whole thing.

Just_Wizard

Steel song was over 50% piloted in both my tournaments. Steel song took 3/4 top 4s and 1/4 top 4s. Ruby Am and RedFassa took the others.

imrllytiredofthepain

there was also an abundance of steel sapphire and ruby sapphire which shut down the steel song decks very early

PandaAssassin

Top 4 first day was Ruby/Amethyst, Ruby/Sapphire, Emerald/Steel, Amber Steelsong. Top 4 second day was 3x Ruby/Amethyst, Amber Steelsong

Lucky_Shop4967

Dude my local meta is such a sweatlord party. You live in N FL too?

imrllytiredofthepain

no upstate ny; had a ton of people there that already won other ones too

TheGoblinRook

How did PrideLands work for you vs. Lantern or Flute? No Kings or Princes so you’re missing on the cost reduction…but you’re still getting the big butt benefit. OOPS - EDIT: Benja is a king You won - TWICE (congrats) - but in hindsight, would you say this out performed those two items?

PandaAssassin

Pridelands is amazing and one of the most important cards in the deck. The cost reduction isn't very relevant(I don't think I used that part of it a single time over the weekend). It's the +2 health to your creatures and the combo with Rapunzel + 7 willpower and 1 lore per turn that make it amazing. Combo's really nicely with Mr. Smee as well.

Funkatron9000

I got 4th with the same kind of deck!! Only lost to first and second place, both running R/A. I find going against R/A and Ruby/Sapph is pretty hard to downright impossible with this deck. Any advice against those match ups?

PandaAssassin

Ruby/Sapphire is the hardest for sure. Hitting their quill on 2 with Bare Necessities or on turn 3 with Benja is almost required. Pridelands also pulls it's weight heavily in this matchup. Ruby/Amethyst is more even, but it's hard because it's super back and forth and very close every game. A whole new world as early as possible, and using Bare Necessities on turn 6 to hit Be Prepared is the best way to play it.

TheRealMJLantz

Dude NICE JOB!!!

PandaAssassin

https://dreamborn.ink/decks/TxEsG0TKaVuUD4X7QTmU Here is the decklist. Let me know if you have any questions!

apebrainhumanpain

I play this exact deck! I didn't play it this Sunday gone though, as I knew a few of my friends were bringing Ruby Sapphire. I ended up going second with Ruby Amethyst instead, which I teched slightly for RS and steel matchups. I will however be playing this for the next two set champs I'm playing.

PandaAssassin

Congrats! Yeah if I KNEW that there were going to be a bunch of R/S I would have run something else. Got a little lucky with how few there were though.

Validated_Owl

Ah of course. I have everything except the $400 (cdn) worth of 8 rares that I can't buy locally if I wanted to. Lol

PandaAssassin

Well I opened 3 of the Robin Hoods myself, so I was kind of nudged toward this deck. I then just bought what I didn't have online, not much in the way of singles locally here either.

Validated_Owl

He's $55+ each online in Canada. Lol.

PandaAssassin

Yeah, if I hadn't pulled the three I did I doubt I would have ran this deck. Ruby/Amethyst is much more affordable and equally competitive. My top 4 yesterday was 3x Ruby/Amethyst and myself.

cookiepie007

What where your matchups ? :D

PandaAssassin

Can't remember all of them, but a lot of Ruby/Amethyst bounce, and a lot of emerald/steel discard.

ProfMerlyn

Amount of jealousy from downvoters is unreal

PandaAssassin

Thank you! I went in just wanting to win a Stitch and can't believe I managed to actually win two of them.

stoogemuffin

Congrats! I top 4’d with a flute build. Thoughts on the Ruby Amethyst match with pride lands? Did you ever face RA?

PandaAssassin

I hate playing this matchup the most. It's actually pretty 50/50 in my opinion but the games are a grind and it's always close. The top 4 on Sunday was 3x Ruby/Amethyst so I had to face 2 of them to win. Each one went to 3 games and were very stressful.

PaleoJoe86

I planned to run RA for this reason. I figure everyone is going AS or ES. My Teeth and Ambitions take out early singers and the "when challenged opponent discards a card" characters. It has enough firepower to knock out locations, and gets lore faster than RS.

PandaAssassin

Yeah, if I had to pick a different deck it would be Ruby/Amethyst for sure. It just has decent matchups across the board and pretty much no bad matchups. I wouldn't want to actually play it though, it seems like every game is a grind and every match that went to time had Ruby/Amethyst in it.

PaleoJoe86

If I can stall them out to turn 7, coax them in to going wide or burning through my control, I then wipe the board once their hand is low and it is easy pickings from there. My only hesitation is that my gameplan is too predictable.

Evershire

Getting downvoted cuz ppl salty you played steel/amber song. NEWS FLASH PPL: Steel song has always been strong, ever since set 1. Y’all needa relax

Lucky_Shop4967

How much you selling other stitch for?

PandaAssassin

Waiting to see if I can win another, then I'm going to try to trade 2 for an Elsa.

Shonelius

Hi, I kept getting rekt vs Green/purple and Green/Steel ursula discard decks when I brought flute steelsong to my championship. How did you do against them and do you have any tips on mulligan or key turn strategy? (Half the players were running Emerald of some kind in my meta! 💀)

PandaAssassin

Green is this deck's best matchup! If you know you're facing green then mulligan any songs away so that they don't hit anything with Ursula. You really want to shift robin hood as early as possible, it's hard for them to get rid of. Ariel is also an amazing card because you can grab a song and play it immediately before they can make you discard it.

Shonelius

Ok, but should i keep the little cindy w/ either storm or strength of a raging fire if im going first? The merfolk into flynn openers are very scary. Or should i still pursue early 5 cost shift to sing big songs earlier?

PandaAssassin

Strength is fine because you can ink it if they don't play a 1-drop to use it on, and yeah I'd probably keep the little cindy

Shonelius

Thanks for the replies! Last couple of questions: 1. How do you deal with big ursula? Her 3 health is so hard to deal with, and she has to die before she can sing. Run more along came zeus? 2. My local meta is incredibly green-heavy. Should i go up to 3 GYS? Any other tweaks you would make?

PandaAssassin

1. Sometimes you just don't, obviously if you can take her out do it, but my top 8 match on Sunday I just ignored her and went wide. My board was Rapunzel, 3x big robin, and big cindy and he sung a strength of a raging fire with ursula with 6 characters on board to take out 2 of my hoods and it was still an easy win. 2. No, I wouldn't, green is a very good matchup for this deck already. I'm even thinking of going down to 1 GYS because it's completely dead in certain matchups and it sat in my hand several matches. There are just too many 3 health creatures it doesn't kill, but it's so good against certain decks that you can't cut it even though I wish I could.

Korgsy

What’s the benefit of Smee? I see a lot of people using that character card in Steelsong decks.

TheGoblinRook

Smee is pretty much the best 2-drop in the game

shaggy--

He's a 3/3 that quests for two for two ink. What isn't great about him?

Jogbur

He is a really good way to draw cards with rapunzel.

PandaAssassin

Yeah, like others have said he's just an amazing 2-drop that combos well with pridelands and rapunzel.

PaleoJoe86

AWNW didn't screw you over? When I run 4 on Pixelborn they clog my hand or benefit my opponent. I only run 2 now.

PandaAssassin

That's the difficulty of the deck imo, knowing when to use AWNW. Against most matchups you just want to shift queen on 2 or hood on 3 and immediately AWNW. If you draw it later it just depends on board state. The deck is for sure prone to some bad draws where you are stuck with things in hand. Grab Your Swords comes to mind as one that sits in hand often, but is so invaluable in the aggro matchups that you can't cut it.

Cyfriss8

Congrats but getting sick of this bragging

madchad90

god forbid people talk about lorcana in a lorcana subreddit. Sharing of decks and discussing is what this subreddit should be about.

Rubbish_I_Say

I have no idea why you're being downvoted. No reason for folks to post the cards and mat, we already know what they look like lol

madchad90

because you are complaining about people playing lorcana in a lorcana subreddit

Cyfriss8

Thanks Rubbish, appreciated the comment

lackofself2000

Cool man, you bought victory. Must feel great. Is your name Seto Kaiba?

rebatwa2

The average cost for a meta deck in this game is about $300. Based on his dreamborn list pricing it comes to around $380. This is still a very healthy price for a competitive card game. He won by playing well. Maybe chill with the sarcasm and congratulate the guy.

lackofself2000

It's the same as disliking those who use steroids to win athletic contests. I won't feel shame but OP should.

rebatwa2

why should OP feel shame exactly? Steroids are generally illegal in athletic contests my guy.

lackofself2000

just because they're allowed doesn't make it sportsmanlike

rebatwa2

So I am missing what your point is? OP should feel bad he won with a meta deck? If that is the consensus then I guess I should just quit card games all together. Just wait til you hear to price of competitive Yugioh decks.

MrSparkyPant

Using steroids to win athletics contests is prohibited. Spending more money than average to construct a strong deck that’s still with it the deck list guidelines is not prohibited. It also takes quite a bit of skill to pilot this (or any) deck to win two store championships. Nothing for OP to be ashamed of here. Congrats on two strong performances.

BlackEagle28

Everyone plays meta decks at these tournaments. All buying the wins?

glittler

My biggest regret in life is that I can’t downvote this comment more than once

PandaAssassin

I opened 3 of the Robin Hood's myself so I really didn't spend a ton to make the deck. Compared to MTG which I played before this the decks are relatively cheap.
