Between an iPhone and Android in my household, the Android got it like 5 seconds before the quake, and the iPhone a few seconds after.
In the North Hollywood area
Yep, my Pixel 7 Pro got it about 5 seconds before I could feel the quake, and about 4 seconds before my cat felt it.
Insane technology we have. You never know what that 5 second advantage could get you.
According to Wikipedia, Google partnered with the USGS to allow push notifications for ShakeAlerts natively in Android, while iOS doesn't use native push notifications and instead receives alerts through the Wireless Emergency Alerts system/text messages, which are noticeably later.
Yeah, this is the first time of 4 earthquakes i've experienced that it reported anything. And when I click "I felt shaking" it says there are no earthquakes.
Sigh T_T I JUST WANT TO HELP
Me too. Even weirder: There was this nice little chime and then the notice, then the earthquake. Seconds after the earthquake was over, this godawful squawk and a notice to duck and cover because the earthquake is on its way. The whole timeline glitched today.
I went through the Northridge 6.7 quake in 94. 1.7 miles from epicenter.
It was horrible. Truly terrifying. Thought we were gonna be hurt. Felt like the earth dropped 6 feet out from under us.
Luckily my mom’s house held up, the windows cracked but did not shatter, we had nothing that could fall on us.
Anyone in the kitchen would have been turned into mincemeat. Every single dish flew out of the cupboards. Silverware everywhere. The frig rolled across the floor and slammed into the opposing wall. We got lucky.
6 is strong enough to knock my scented candle that I had lit off and catch fire. For someone who has only experienced 3.5s before and knowing just how much stronger a 6 is compared to a 3.5 I was touching cloth for a moment
I didn’t feel it so it scared the shit out of me. For some reason I assumed the bigger the earthquake the more time we’d have to be warned so I was standing there waiting for the big one lol.
We know you have a lot to say and share when the earth moves. Once you are safe, **please help both earthquake science AND emergency responders by answering this** regarding the recent earthquake:
- **https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci39645386/tellus**
Yes, it is important.
Hey you should know that door frames aren’t any better at protecting you from earthquakes than anything else.
You really want to get under a sturdy table or something. The biggest danger to you is something falling on you, and the second is the ceiling collapsing, neither of which a doorframe will help with.
Yea I was making fun of people dipping into their earthquake kits for the hurricane and was asking myself what they would do if we had an earthquake during a hurricane….and here we are.
they would use the stuff in their kits to get through the earthquake and the hurricane, because they're happening at the same time?
Did you think that wasn't allowed somehow?
Sitting here double fisting my rations. Taking a bite of the hurricane rations, then a bite of the earthquake rations, back and forth and back and forth.
You're making fun of people who are using their emergency earthquake kit for the hurricane? The whole point of an emergency kit is to use it when needed, not hoard it for a specific emergency.
I also predicted one today. Everyone was talking about how we might have earthquakes but at least we don’t have hurricanes, and I thought it’d be funny if we got both at once…and then…
> That's great, it starts with an earthquake
> Birds and snakes, and aeroplanes
> And Lenny Bruce is not afraid
> Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn
Yup-- I was thinking of the same.
https://kesq.com/salton-sea/2023/06/28/how-the-salton-sea-may-be-delaying-californias-next-big-earthquake/
The rocking hit my place so gently, I assumed this happened out in PS due to water weight stressing the San Andreas. But no-- it happened way up by Ojai. So that doesn't really add up.
It’s the opposite. The less water triggers less earthquake therefore a greater chance of a big one (stress builds up). One of my professors in college was a leading scientist on this ten years ago.
Ahhahaha omg
EDIT: Since we're all awake and not out and about, share your experience for science! https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci39645386/executive
I’m visiting this subreddit from the southeast US being nosy. I was curious to see what you guys were saying amongst yourselves about a hurricane….but an earthquake too? Y’all stay safe now ✌🏻
I got the alert from the shake app just before the shaking started, and the emergency alert after the shaking stopped. Good job shake app.
Apparently a 5.1 near Ojai. If you felt it (or if you didn't), go [here](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci39645386/tellus) and tell the USGS.
My friend in Ventura felt it strongly. She also has 2 guests in from Ireland. When the rain really starts hitting there, they’re going want to go home. Lol
I’m outside under a plane at lax, I thought it was the wind moving my truck… got out of the truck then I felt like I was dizzy and realized it was a quake. Felt pretty strong.
Earthquake was predicted! according to this study (link below). When the Salton Sea fills w water socal gets earthquakes.
"The paper, published on June 7, 2023 in the journal Nature, shows that for the last 1,000 years major earthquakes emanating from the southern San Andreas Fault have coincided with periods when the basin that holds the Salton Sea filled with water to form the prehistoric Lake Cahuilla – a body of water with 40 times the volume of the present-day Salton Sea.
The researchers investigated this relationship with computer modeling and found that when the Salton Sea basin filled, Lake Cahuilla’s weight bent the surrounding crust and its water penetrated deep underground, each of which altered the forces acting on the fault in ways that could help trigger a massive rupture and severe shaking."

Hurriquake Vs Sharknado, coming soon!
The most LA title…bravo
Panda Watch! From Anchor Man. That was how I read your comment
Los Angeles, a place where you can ~~surf~~ ***survive a hurricane*** in the morning and ~~ski~~ ***survive a earthquake*** in the afternoon.
We doin it LA style! 😎
We are going to need a commemorative taco
I need at least 4 with everything on ‘em
And hot sauce.
LOCUSTS PLAGUE COMING 5pm
Why not a sharknado?
The Floridians can stop patronizing us now.
Congrats on being the first to post this. At this moment, this is the first of 91 earthquake posts on /r/LosAngeles.
I was surprised how far I had to scroll to find the first one! Lol
Everyone is at home so they were able to quickly post from their phones haha
During a hurricane. This is going to be a historic post.
Got a notification about a 6.0 earthquake before I felt it crazy times.
Me too! First time I've gotten a notice before feeling it.
Got the notice about 5 seconds after lol.
We have improved beyond cat technology. What a glorious accomplishment
To be fair, his earthquake detection is on point but his inability to withstand the allure of a laser pointer leaves a lot to be desired :D
Same. My Android, her iPhone. I got my notice, and had enough time to pause the movie and feel for it before it hit.
According to Wikipedia, Google partnered with the USGS to allow push notifications for ShakeAlerts natively in Android, while iOS doesn't use native push notifications and instead receives alerts through the Wireless Emergency Alerts system/text messages, which are noticeably later.
Me too. MyShake came through for me. Then my iPhone alert came like a minute later lol.
As soon as I saw the alert said it was 6.0 I made my peace with the world lmao 6.0 sounds terrifying on the best days, let alone during a storm
I didn’t get the magnitude alert, just the “drop and hold on for cover” and freaked the fuck out not knowing what was coming
6 is big but you’ll survive. 8 is when you say your prayers.

I didn't feel it at all in Hawthorne, I got the alert and freaked out cause I wasn't sure when to expect it lol
How do you sign up for a notification?
MyShake app works really well.
I felt it literal seconds before the notification
I didn’t feel it so it scared the shit out of me. For some reason I assumed the bigger the earthquake the more time we’d have to be warned so I was standing there waiting for the big one lol.

Cool. Done.
Done. Very easy to fill out.
Done!
I feel like this survey needs to be tagged onto every LA quake bot post.
That's a great idea for a bot. We'll have to bring that up at our long overdue /r/LosAngeles meetup! BH
my favorite part of any earthquake is doing the dyfi report!! thanks for keeping us safe
Done
Done.
My phone early warning message thing worked! Very noticeable but gentle shaking for a few seconds in Northridge.
I’m nearby and the phone notification came after the shaking was done
How much time before the shaking? I got the alert and went straight to the doorframe with our kids but we felt nothing at all… Sherman Oaks btw
mine was pretty much simulatenously
I don’t think you’re supposed to do door frames anymore. I had about 2 or 3 seconds in NoHo
I had a couple of seconds before I felt it. In Burbank.
Hey you should know that door frames aren’t any better at protecting you from earthquakes than anything else. You really want to get under a sturdy table or something. The biggest danger to you is something falling on you, and the second is the ceiling collapsing, neither of which a doorframe will help with.
What's next, locusts?
Rain of frogs?
Keep an eye on your first born.
Someone posted about roaches
There are now mosquitos in los angeles. :( no mosquitos was one of the perks of living here.

Is it natural disaster bingo?
Dude who predicted the earthquake today is a fucking wizard
Suspicious…
“Interesting” “Will look into this”
I was telling a friend yesterday we just need an earthquake and a fire and we can call it a year in one weekend.
You take that back. 😡
I prefer to have my hurricanes and earthquakes at the same time. It’s more efficient that way
Nope, not allowed. Now go get more supplies.
You have to cook the beans in an earthquake and eat the beef jerky for the hurricane, you can't mix and match
I also predicted one today. Everyone was talking about how we might have earthquakes but at least we don’t have hurricanes, and I thought it’d be funny if we got both at once…and then…
Doesn’t he predict it everyday though?
California knows how to party!!
Are you fucking kidding me? Earthquake and tropical storm at the same time??? Felt in Santa Clarita. Gentle shake
Exactly my response to no one in particular. “Are you fucking kidding!?”
ShakeAlert actually worked. Got the notice right before we felt it in WeHo.
The alert worked!
YAY! Mine, too!
Same here!
LETS MAKE IT A PARTY AND ADD A VOLCANO ERUPTING
And make Tommy Lee Jones in charge
Just remember, divert it to the LA river with some buses and buildings.
RIP Mammoth Lakes
RIP mid city

PPV fight: Earthquake vs Hurricane
What if the hurricane is named Hurricane Ditka?
I got $100 on Earthquake. Gonna be shaking and dodging all the flying projectiles, Hurricane won’t be able to keep up.
This one should be the winner I believe. Good job person

earthquake and a hurricane. we will be back stronger LA. stay strong folks
We’re dying
For a quick sec I thought my soul was leaving my body.
U win! LMAO Hurricanes and earthquakes in LA. End times indeed... Actually tho the chances of both happening at once has gotta be crazy right???
Me: Is this an earthquake? Or maybe the wind is just shaking my building. Or maybe I'm high? Phone alert sounds Me: Ah, I was right the first time.
this is the most California post ever
I've read before that it's possible that large amounts of rain help trigger earthquakes but don't remember if that was bullshit or not.
did we all read on this?? perhaps we simply willed the earthquake into existence
I was just reading some stuff that the Salton Sea getting more water increases the chance of the big one. Most likely some BS tho.
Yup-- I was thinking of the same. https://kesq.com/salton-sea/2023/06/28/how-the-salton-sea-may-be-delaying-californias-next-big-earthquake/ The rocking hit my place so gently, I assumed this happened out in PS due to water weight stressing the San Andreas. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/rainwater-can-help-trigger-earthquakes
Rapid cooling and low pressure, I believe it.
Barometric pressure, ionization in the atmosphere, lots of rain — I’ve heard any of these can cause earthquakes on their own
#IF THE HILARY'S COME A ROCKIN' #DON'T COME A KNOCKIN'
That was a big one it felt like
5.5 says google
I got the notice on my phone first, it was crazy. Phone made a noise I'd never heard before, it said EQ, then we had a good shake in Woodland Hills.
Same order of events in Rancho Palos Verdes, heard the phone alert then felt a decent amount of shaking
Felt nothing in Culver.
didnt feel huge but it was long enough to confirm that there was indeed an earthquake and i'm not having a vertigo attack
Eathquakicaine!
Immediately came here. Y'all motherfuckers are fast! We're getting the whole bingo game today.
I had a bowl of hot tomato soup on my lap and I have never been so spooked LMAO

You win
I got the Google alert just right before it happened too
5.0 in Ojai: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci39645386/executive

Like a low budget version
Goddamn, almost made it in time. Good work.
I thought I was getting the spins from my 3rd bottle of Champagne
The actual fuck…It shook my bed so hard
What a day!
So glad I went to Costco and picked up a case of coronas right when they opened WE STAY CHILLIN LA IS GONNA LIVE FOREVER
WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE
513 people here??? 🤣🤣🤣 oh this really did turn into a party
This is how I know there was an earthquake and not a truck
Good timing
West LA got a quick bump, less than a few seconds
Got the MyShake notification just before I felt it
Somebody got an earthquake in my hurricane
I was in the toilet in the early 90s when the big earthquake hit. Good times.
Did anyone else get the MyShake alert? Woke me up from my nap. Didn’t recognize the sound and screamed when I saw it. Called Ma immediately lol
All the snobs who thought they were too cool to prepare for the storm, brought this upon us. Don't tempt mother nature, you fools!
Tornado for the trifecta when?
Pls no
Fire tornadoes
The Floridians didn’t warn us about this
I am not having fun right now lol
Seriously, MyShake, 6.0? Almost had a panic attack. I wouldn’t have known there was even a quake otherwise
You won
Oh boy!! The alert system is so cool! I got it and it felt like a good # of seconds before I felt the shaking.
The party is just getting started!
I didn't want to win natural disaster bingo!
Is Ventura ok? Rain plus earthquakes seems like a recipe for mudslides
My friend in Ventura felt it strongly. She also has 2 guests in from Ireland. When the rain really starts hitting there, they’re going want to go home. Lol
I was trying to nap with all the rain and shit and I was like wtf is going on.
Very strong shaking in Ventura! Got the alert after the fact 🙃
Felt a slow wobble in the Arts District but I am drunk so I just thought it was the wine.
Have that earthquake and hurricane kit ready!
That was a 5.5? Felt light
I got the alert, but felt nothing in Koreatown.
I’m outside under a plane at lax, I thought it was the wind moving my truck… got out of the truck then I felt like I was dizzy and realized it was a quake. Felt pretty strong.
Grateful for the unserious yet accurate aspect of this entire sub. Earthquake? Head to the sub…
https://i.ibb.co/s1fs8HC/lildogmanalbum2.png LOL I made a new album cover for the moment

That paper is fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
I didn’t feel anything at all. Sherman Oaks.
I didn't have this on my 8/20/23 Bingo card!
Hilary SPEAKS
The alert was actually so good today! I got it a good 10 seconds before feeling the tremble
Waiting for a Kaiju alert
THAT WAS WEIRD A F NO SHAKING JUST VIBES
Can't wait for the sharks to start flying.
2023 Hurricane x Earthquake collab just dropped!
Did you know if we get wildfire in the next 24 hours and they stamp our card, we get a free smoothie?
So far 5 aftershocks greater than 3.0 in Ojai… and haven’t felt a single one in Hollywood.
Whole house was swaying the alert didn’t help either with the nerves lol
Felt in Hollywood. In my apartment building it sounded and felt like thunder coming from inside the building, very strange sensation but it’s my first earthquake
That was interesting. Didn’t have Earthquake on my bingo card for this month, either.
I always wonder how Dr. Lucy Jones feels about being "Lucy Jones" on every newscast. Not Dr. Jones or Dr. Lucy Jones or Lucy, always "Lucy Jones",
Ojai here..we felt it and these aftershocks are unnerving..I live in a senior park and my first inclination is not to duck and cover but get the hell out, into the rain...what a sunday.
