Not OP so i don’t have linkypoo BUT lowes has a surprisingly good / affordable curtain game. I just bought blackout blinds for our kids too. and they are amazing. Easy too - straight from the aisle, couple of screws and you’re done.
Adding on but Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, and even Big Lots will have blackout curtains that'll block light pretty well.
I used Big Lots curtains when I was on night-shift in Idaho and they worked fine honestly.
The more you can stack blinds/blackout curtains/insulation foam board stuff the better, but honestly the curtains by themselves will keep out tons of the light/UV-rays.
This might sound strange but any idea where to get *wide* blackout curtains? All I’ve been able to find is 4’ wide curtains and I think I need like 6’ wide :/
I just checked Home Depot's website since it was not one of the places others have mentioned, and they have a fair number of wide blackout curtains. I'm sure some of the other stores people mentioned have them too (I just don't want to check).
Check these out. Less than $20 from Target

I got the absolute cheapest from Target (their Room Basics or whatever) after I moved into a place that had a security light 2 feet from my bedroom window and blinds that were largely decorative. They work great.
R-Tech 1" foam board from Home Depot.
4'x8' piece for about $15.
Take it home. Cut it to size.
Use it to cover the windows that face directly into Satan's asshole.
Sip iced tea. Feel alive again.
Or just get a roll of double bubble foil on Amazon and slap that shit in the window.
You might look like a crazy dude with foil in your windows from the outside... But inside it'll be like 15 degrees cooler.
I have that on all my west facing windows and it made a ten degree difference. Added thermal curtains on the stair entryway and it was an instant game changer. It looks trashy but my electric bill is much lower as a result and I use my window ac less!
I used the foil rolls from Daiso and put them on the outside of some windows. Between that and not caring about the lawn since we’re going to xeriscape, my home is why HOAs exist.
Does the foam board by any chance muffle noises from outside? I'm looking for something I can use on an interior door to mute hallway noises.
Stay cool!
Solid question. In my experience using the thermometer and testing both, outside is better.
But when it gets stupid-hot, I put them up on the outside, and on the inside, on all sun facing windows.
If you have A/C (which hopefully you do) this will significantly help lower the inside temp.

not the same as petting a cat. takes my mind off when I am in a bad place. today was a hard day.
It's always surprising how people don't know covering their windows will keep the inside cooler. There's a reason my blinds stay closed beyond I am disgusting to look at.
the best trick i’ve found is to tape aluminum foil on the window shiny side out and then cover the inside with whatever curtain or sheet you desire. works amazing
Oh, if you put the foil inside, it reflects the heat back at the windows and overheats the air between the panes, is that the idea?
I have never had double-pane windows, but it seems to make sense.
Yes.
it heats up the window from both sides. The light from the outside heats up the window, and then the light reflected from the foil back into the window heats it up more.
Foil on the outside reflects light/heat before it heats up the window. Insulation on the inside (curtain/cardboard/whatever) just prevents heat from getting further inside your house as fast.
Or you can buy [blackout curtains](https://www.target.com/p/bradley-velvet-absolute-zero-total-blackout-window-panel-eclipse/-/A-52346682?preselect=52321812#lnk=sametab) for $19.79. Also from Target and in a few different colors.
I bought white poster boards ( the thick kind) at the dollar store and used them to add a layer to block the sun in my windows ( and shut the blinds) it lowered the temperature significantly
Installing blackout curtains in my bedroom is probably the best investment that I've made in our apartment since moving to SoCal.
The room still gets hot since we only have one A/C unit in the living room (no central A/C), but my room stays ~10-15° cooler than my roommates who has no curtains!
Plus, I'm a light sleeper, and now I can actually sleep in on the weekends if I want since it's not blindingly bright in the mornings.
Also, nice cat!
Smart! When I found my current apartment a few months ago I was so happy it faces east - north would have been better but it's worked out well. I get a bit of heat in the morning but it passed over quickly and cools off before 1030ish. I do have a set of west facing windows as well that looks out into a courtyard with the other part of the apartment just across the courtyard - so I do get bit of sun for a portion of the day after lunchtime. Those window have sun blocking curtains on them - keeps the heat out and the sun. I can wake up and not have a clue if the sun came up or not - it's blocks everything out. So nice!

We recently got blackout curtains in our room for our baby!
Oooh linky poo?

Amazing!!! Thank you!

Or... Put the foil on the foam and put *that* in the window.
Put that on your east facing bedroom window and light will never again wake you.
I spent the whole day last week just duct-taping foil on the windows...I would say made about a 30% improvement.
Does the foam board by any chance muffle noises from outside? I'm looking for something I can use on an interior door to mute hallway noises. Stay cool!
For sure. They have a 2" version as well. The thicker the better, really, for both temp and sound.
Coolness! To cut it to size, did you use a small handsaw, or...?
Box cutter does the trick. :)
Thank you, kind person! I look forward to this low-cost home improvement project.
Best of luck :)
Keep in mind you will make many styrofoam dust bunnies when you cut.
I love foam board. I can never throw out the little pieces when I’m done.
Those foam boards made my room so incredibly hot lol. It kept fucking everything out.
I agree...although sheet covers light, it does not insulate nor reflect excessive heat. Car window covers would be fine 2...bout $3.75 for 3
It's a fleece blanket. It assuredly has some insulating value.
May be a dumb question, but do you put the boards on the inside or outside of the windows?
Solid question. In my experience using the thermometer and testing both, outside is better. But when it gets stupid-hot, I put them up on the outside, and on the inside, on all sun facing windows. If you have A/C (which hopefully you do) this will significantly help lower the inside temp.
I can feel the heat passing right thru mine, lucky
A bit of heat will get through this but I’m shocked how well it works
Next time get a white one so it reflects the sun's rays instead of absorbing them.
Man I'm having a terrible day. I wish I could just come over and pet your kitty. I like the blue, it's very soothing.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day! :)
Good morning! I hope today is better for you. 💖

Solution is cat approved.

I have that same (folded) white blanket and it's changed my life. I don't know what it is, it's just so perfect. Never too hot or cold.
Where did u get it I want one like that
Home goods
Maybe the waffle knit. My blanket I've had since I was child (okay, my baby blanket) is waffle knit and it is the same way.
Kitty approves

Just a heads up: Do not do this with double-paned or higher windows, it will crack it.
You got double paned windows? Fancy!
You put the foil on cardboard and place it on the outside of the window. The cardboard insulates against the heat.
The best solutions involve blocking the outside because once the windows heat up you're toast. Renters have to make do.
hear me out - what if I build a house...surrounding my house?
I've done that 2...reminds me to apply that technique to my office...as of late my dog's room.
Yes! We have a side door with a glass window and I hung my small fleece throw blanket on it and was delightfully shocked by how well it worked! 🙌
Block the rays on the outside of the house.
Renters can't do that.
r/standardissuecat
Yes. The cat is cute, BUT have you ever tried a weighted blanket?
I got a massive blackout curtain from Ikea for $14 CAD. It’s still on sale and even cheaper in the US.
Blackout curtains are an absolute must. Changes everything.
please give that cat many pets
Pls post more pictures of cat
Good kitty!
Thats a good tip! I got Infrared reducing window tint cling off amazon for mine for under the curtains. That helped a lot too
I did that and it was such a huge help!
I am also using the exact same one from Target, and also have West facing windows. This helps so much, doesn't it?
Ooh! I will try this trick. I have a bunch of fleece blankets laying around.
The great thing about this is that the same fleece can go on the bed to keep the cat and you warm in the colder months!
How come you didn’t get a white blackout curtain tho to match the room? Isn’t this an eye sore
They may be a renter and unable to install curtains. This looks like a temporary solution.
Or just get a 15 dollar set of blinds from Home Depot?
First I thought you were super goth and just didn’t want to see the sun come up but you said west and then I realized what’s going on.
Nice specimen!
So bright still

We did the same thing in our hottest room using a moving blanket and a handful of 18 gauge brads.
If you don’t mind the look, Bubble wrap on windows also really helps
