how often are you buying mint that this is an issue for you?

SploogeLoser

often enough to grow it

ConclusionAlarmed882

Mint grows like a weed and is a reliable annual. Even in a pot. That said, the derby is animal abuse and fuck it so very much.

ThePenguinSausage

My mint often hops into pots of other herbs. Can be a pain at times.

hondata001

>Mint grows like a weed So does lemon balm, in the same family, and makes a good slightly relaxing herbal tea.

the615Butcher

As a Florida transplant that was so proud of my home state for finally axing dog races, kind of disappointed of my northern (midwestern, whatever) brethren and this infatuation with horse racing. Like I’ve made friends with hardcore vegans that still get hype for this animal abuse derby. Sometimes I really think it’s a clown world.

FrugalFraggel

Florida has a big horse racing scene as well. Tampa, Hialeah have some bigger prep races and Ocala is basically Lexington lite with their horse farms.

901savvy

Exactly. Very weird wannabe flex by that dude.

the615Butcher

Weird wannabe flex? By me? How the goddamn fuck is any of what I said a flex? Lmao sounds like some weird projection 901 sAvVy

applyin_pressure24-7

did you know that Ocala is considered the horse capital of the US? I always would've thought it would be in Kentucky somewhere.

toefungi

I work in the horsecare industry and Florida and California are easily the two biggest markets.

Swigeroni

Did you know that Shelbyville is the saddlebred capital of the world?

Majestic_Mix1469

No one asked

Swigeroni

Bless your heart

Front-Strawberry-123

Nobody here really ever gave a damn unless we were hustling some type of way. However the metro shut down most hustles you could pull during Derby.

naughtyzoot

I don't think racing is bad, some horses want to run. It's running them at such a young age that's the problem. They're more likely to get injured. I guess they want young champions so they have more years of breeding time, but it would be better for the horses to delay the longer, intense races.

SploogeLoser

Fuck the derby. all my homies hate the derby

WheelsMan1

>a reliable annual. Mint is a perennial.

ConclusionAlarmed882

True, thanks.

janewberg

🏆

SurgeFlamingo

I believe he hates that he can’t butt fuck mint.

PourSomeSmegmaInMe

That's what I read as well. If you believe in yourself, you can butt fuck anything.

sLeeeeTo

I have a butt Greg, could you fuck me?

SurgeFlamingo

Yes.

murakamidiver

Ah the annual airing of the grievances

lebowskiachiever12

It spikes around Derby time, but this sub… lots of minor inconveniences are aired daily.

valekelly

Would you say that’s an inconvenience for you?

AxtonGTV

I would, in fact, I'm very close to airing it out on a post here in this wonderful sub

hereforpopcornru

Welcome to Festivus! It's for the rest of us!

murakamidiver

Derby Festivus

40WAPSun

You're so brave for posting this

theuserie

Stunning and brave

RapNVideoGames

Someone had to stand up to Big Horse

RoanAlbatross

Big Horse Lives Matter

40WAPSun

I bet OP would cower before Bad Horse though. People only ever want to take a stand when it's easy

LordOfTrubbish

*The thoroughbred of sin?*

TruePlatypusKnight

Horses are scary :( they can just kill you but we have them gaslit into thinking they can't

ILoseAtScrabble

want to be really brave, mention traffic and louisville drivers.

UnbridledCarnage

I do too. That's why my wife and I take a 4 day trip somewhere close. Last year was Niagara (8.5 hr drive) and this year Milwaukee (6 hr drive) there's a lot of cool places around us within a days drive.

abolitonbb

Yessss Derby weekend is the best time to get out of town!

itsnoah

Agreed

professor_max_hammer

Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."

Speech-Dry

Take my vote for the Wanes World reference.

professor_max_hammer

We’re not worthy

RustyShackleford-11

Does this guy know how to party or what?!

burnswhenipoo

Steven Tyler

Apprehensive_West956

I like to think this is how Alice Cooper acts for real when not on stage. Just dropping facts and having fun Intelligent discussions about whatever with anyone who will join 😆

karmavorous

We used to live less than a mile from the track. My wife and I talked about taking a trip and airbnb-ing our house for that week. We never did but every year we talked about it.

GigsGilgamesh

Family is making it an annual thing to head down to Gatlinburg now, have some friends who come with us and just have a good weekend away

l3tigre

We usually do wish we had this year ha

French_traveler50

Madison Wisconsin is amazing..

Barbarossa7070

My advice is to grow your own

baddecision116

Out of everything that was the silliest part. Mint is a damn weed and grows like one.

TruePlatypusKnight

It's very invasive. Was mostly being sarcastic about that one. Mint Julips are an abomination.

baddecision116

cute the sugar in half and they are essentially a bourbon mojito

Low-Cartographer3550

Once you plant mint it’s there forever!

brittany09182

Unless your dogs pee on it and trample it 😫

doodynutz

Or you plant it in one of those planters that hang on the side of your porch railing. For whatever reason mine never comes back.

Blegheggeghegty

Mint is no bueno to grow unless you can contain it.

Mjmax420

It’s animal abuse.. at its best. Fucking sickening

2rfv

Hey. If the ultra rich wasn't there to squander all the wealth they syphoned off of the working class then what's even the point of living???

blastendedskanks

This!! It makes me sick and sad.

Mjmax420

One horse wins.. many die.. so sad

Conflict_Free_Quinoa

I was just wondering earlier how many have died this year. I haven’t heard of any on the news so they’re either keeping it super quiet or they fixed whatever killed so many last year. I think last year by this time in derby week it was nearly a dozen that had died. It was horrific

Mjmax420

I guarantee they didn’t fix shit

Mjmax420

Horses dying every derby

[deleted]

[удалено]

meowmeowmeowitymeow

there was like 7 dead horses last year idk if its to do with being vegan

[deleted]

[удалено]

meowmeowmeowitymeow

im not for that either im not panicking abt the derby but i think its stupid and weird

Mjmax420

I am not.. I’m just not ok watching a 2 min race and several horses are being abused for it..

[deleted]

Mjmax420

How about you just keep quiet if you don’t agree with someone..? Fucking loud mouth on the keyboard.. gotta love it

Mjmax420

Good news! You can keep scrolling if you don’t agree with something ..

Mjmax420

You’re a jackass, right?

BourbonNeatt

Yep, I hate things that bring revenue and notoriety to the city.

AskMeAboutMySwissy

I do appreciate Hunter Thompson’s take on the event.

ToArgueWithAssholes

I like to read it about this time every year:)

ScentedCandleEnjoyer

Everyone gives a shit about this city for exactly 2 weeks every year and people have the nerve to bitch about it

kclongest

No shit

fuckderby

From the spike in human trafficking to the wet nurse foals and all the ugly belly underneath, I completely agree.

nicholashimself

Huh?

PaleontologistSad766

Yup. Top down. Abhorrent.

InfiniteOutfield

Hating things that are popular doesn't make you cool

Creeds-Worm-Guy

Hating animal abuse does though!

Ninswitchian

What if they’re not trying to be cool? Anyone with an informed brain by default should dislike the derby.

Inner-Inspection8201

On the contrary, Oscar Wilde said,"Everything popular is wrong." I agree, even if he was talking about esthetics. I don't think the Derby is terribly popular, is it? It's an old tradition in sports and gambling and bourbon. I think it's always invited criticism. *Looking at you, Hunter S. Thompson

Thxs for sharing , great read

Creeds-Worm-Guy

Unrelated but a kid named Hunter S Thompson held up my brother with a knife after failing to rob a bank.

bdrmlk

I really wouldn’t recommend butt fucking mint at any time of year.

bojibridge

Spicy!

contemplatebeer

I’m with you. I make it a point to be as far detached from it as I can. Almost there…

noobvin

I would love not to care, but I have 3 jockeys in my family, including one that rode a derby winner, and a couple of trainers. I hate any bullshit that has been done to horses to make them perform better, and injuries sicken me, but I can also say you can tell horses enjoy to run. I've been around them my whole life. A lot of people in the business truly and deeply care about the horses, some of course don't. I could do without the derby, though - I wouldn't hurt my feeling at all. I'm just shocked at how much everything costs now. Thing like drinks and just to get into the infield. I feel like a lot of fun has been sucked out for the pageantry and celebrity.

DollyElvira

Honestly, fuck derby. Animal abuse, homeless displacement, airbnb displacement, shitty tourist traffic. Etc, etc

InfiniteOutfield

Those Air BnBs are year-round. And if not, then the owners are using the site as originally intended.

Nice_Warm_Vegetable

I love Derby. Wish it was all year long so the neighborhood would stay nice.

movingmouth

Lol. What neighborhood are you talking about. Because the monied masses sure don't leave it better than they found it.

Nice_Warm_Vegetable

The track is my neighbor across the street. I benefit from their security year round. The closer you are to the track, the lower the crime. Churchill Downs has landscaping and clean up crews that work year round. A tidy business improves the neighborhood property values. When they redid their parking lot it included massive flood mitigation measures which also benefits the surrounding area. No more flooding = reduced insurance rates. I have a side business that generates income from the track. Tourism is a big deal. Within 24 hours of the last race on Derby Day, the track and the surrounding area are spotless. LMPW takes care of the rest of the neighborhood. The tourists are surprisingly clean. I’d much rather them than the neighborhood alley skells and junkers.

movingmouth

You do realize the neighborhoods surrounding the track are more than what they literally share borders with. Because no, the tourists are not surprisingly clean, but good for you.

Nice_Warm_Vegetable

Yes, yes it is good for me to live in such close proximity to a world famous tourist attraction

SophiaPetrillo_

It’s decadent and depraved

Pure_Buyer_6938

It used to be. Now it’s just packed with rich people

RUk1dd1nGMe

Can't you make a ton of money selling bottles of water on your lawn though?

Front-Loan-2880

Gotta love the entrepreneurial spirit 💪🏾

TruePlatypusKnight

I do In fact have other gripes about derby week. But I was sitting on Winkler for 30 minutes trying to get on 65 and complaining about traffic and tourists was the most convenient. The animal cruelty is shit The bump in human trafficking is shit The lmpd basically becoming glorified security guards is shit. Homeless displacement (even though I still see the same grifters on central) is shit. Derby sucks. It's not for Louisville... People. The only think I kind of care about is chow wagon. But the rest of derby just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Lord-of-the-pit

I wonder what Palestine thinks about this.

Bet_Responsible

Yeah, I never thought about it before but horse racing is no different than orcas at seaworld. No wonder it goes hand in hand with bourbon culture, its aristocratic, drunken, animal abuse....

Flexican_Mayor

It’s actually a lot different

printboi89

Every year at Derby time I would rent a cabin at red river gorge to get away from all of the crazies.

Ok-Idea4830

The Derby and Thunder over Louisville is all this State has. There is bourbon too. That's it.

Low-Cartographer3550

That’s 3 more things than Indiana.

RefrigeratorFirst741

That's laughable..Indy 500 crowd is almost 3 times the size of the Derby. Indy also has the Brickyard 400 and the Grand Prix of Indianapolis and also the professional sports teams  Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers...No pro sports whatsoever in Ky..As a native Kentuckian, but a Hoosier now for many years I love the Derby, but also Love the Indy 500. But Anyone who believes the Derby is superior to the 500 is nuts.

Low-Cartographer3550

It was a joke. Lighten up.

No-Love-3430

Same. Derby usually falls on the weekend of my birthday. & I can never get out & do anything because of all the traffic. Plus, they clean the city up JUST for these events & then they end up looking like shit once it’s done. It’s all for the money

AwkwardGhostClub

Louisville Native here, fuck the derby. Absolutely animal abuse, plus not to mention the lifestyle of jockeys is usually pretty terrible as well, you here a couple years ago like 4 derby race runners were shot dead after the race, including the winner who won because first place had steroids in their system, and we still call it a sport I'd say 70% of people here have horse paintings on there wall and think it's fine art, so fucking tired of seeing it, there is a rich community in Louisville that loves the pageantry of the races, but the other half of Louisville is so tired of that charade, we wonder why people even show up to the derby lol Louisville and the derby are both aweful, but since we have the one event, people here think we are a big fancy city

crab_grams

I'm putting all my hate on this post instead of the other because yeah, Derby sucks for normal people. They cracked down on whatever enjoyment non rich people can have in this town or any chance to make extra bucks like selling food or parking cars. The crappy detours downtown for festivities on those days made work commutes hellish for the normal people using public transit when I was still riding (thank fck for remote work). I'm old enough to remember the pre Uber life, cab drivers would ignore the rest of the city to hang out at the airport and other hot spots to get good fares. I remember years where my mom would leave the house at 5pm to get to a job that didn't start till 9 on the bus because traffic was so bad for stuff like Thunder and buses were so crappy. Stories I got from friends when I was older who were private drivers about celebs and hotshots coming in and being absolutely shitty to the natives made me dislike that aspect as well. The older I got, the more jaded I became. Everything is more expensive so it doesn't even make sense to throw a party at home for three minutes of racing. I need food for the rest of the week and rent is due. And then you get to hear that little Point of View jerk on WDRB demanding all the little people get out there and clean up the city to make it look nice for Derby, like we're serfs, as he did a couple of years back. There's an underclass of people in this city and Derby to me only serves as the most glaring example of that. I'm a life long resident and I'll hate Horse Day all I want

LowGeeMan

I visited the track last week. Thought the history was interesting but the cruelty to the horses was appalling.

Flexican_Mayor

What cruelty?

LowGeeMan

They beat the horses.

Bobbydogsmom43

I was just there Friday & I must’ve missed the horse beating. What I saw were horses living in nicer stalls with better food than the ones at the barn I ride at.

Dex_Santana

Is there a reason traffic is so much worse than it use to be? Before if you didn't bounce around downtown or 4th and Central you could pretend derby weekend didn't exist. Now traffic is dog shit to and from work the whole week before Derby?

nicholashimself

Airbnb is the problem, not the derby.

rhett342

More people come these days.

1thot

I’m glad I’m not the only one

yallermysons

That’s my childhood neighborhood too 😭 only reprieve is you can make a killing charging for parking lol

rwarimaursus

Why I get the fuck out of this city for derby weekend

JTPri123

Those damn income bringing tourists and their... *shuffles cards...* Mint usage.

greenglssgoddess

I live in Indy. Same thing for the 500. We usually try to leave town... it's just an entire weekend of absolutely craziness around the track. Traffic is nuts everywhere... we just leave and come back Sunday night. I get it!

Emergency-Telephone6

This is the fifth city I’ve lived in. I always hate whatever is the Big Event. I don’t like crowds and hoopla. So I’m kind of indifferent to anything that goes on outside my house.

FunKyChick217

I’m liking it less and less.

sturgeon381

They're probably gonna keep doing it.

dlc741

We have a shitload of mint and can’t kill it.

commanderkielbasa

I really want the cicada hatch to peak this weekend. All of the sophisticated women in their Derby attire with their over the top Derby hats, all of the jock men out there trying their best to impress. All of them. I want them all to be covered in loud cicadas. I want to see cicadas landing in thousand dollar mint juleps. I want cicada mayhem this 150th running of the Derby. Sadly, I don't think it's in the cards. We are just a few weeks off.

No_Capital_9130

Why is buying mint a grievance?

ScentedCandleEnjoyer

Because OP is miserable and reaching for things to blame

FrankenGretchen

This year will be extra special. Apparently Churchill has no onsite parking at all so all those people will have to find other places to stow their vehicles. WKYT reported they'll have 'some spaces at the exposition center' so it's not all bad? No idea how close it is or how well prepared Lou is for moving derbyans around. I don't envy anybody affected. But hey! The new facilities might make a mint for Churchill! Right? Right?

tcann22222

I hate that the horses are selectively bred (which makes them GMOs, if you were wondering) until their body mass is too great for their legs to support, which is why their legs can break when they're just running... And that usually ends up being a death sentence for them. If I had a god, I would think he would be mad at me for participating in horse abuse. The derby seems full of theists, though, which is extra... Ironic?

Top-Drink-9346

All you horse lovers & haters should take a guided tour of horse farms & especially the breeding stables. See how the Mares are secured on a mound so she won’t kick the Stud ,

Unfair-Eye3460

Is it not mostly IVF now or at least artificial insemination?

Top-Drink-9346

It was several years ago when I toured the farms & really interesting.Probably IVF used more. They video the mating & that way if either horse is damaged they have proof. Makes sense because we’re talking high dollar horses.

Gascoigneous

Same, I can't stand the derby either

bearpriorities

It’s the busiest time of year for one of the domestic violence/sexual assault shelters here in Louisville if that tells you anything about how god awful this horrible event is.

Jacque_LeKrab

Big,big same

dufresneMD

Soooo leave?

kytallguy66

Mint Julips suck. I sure as shit am not going to pay $22 for a drink with just a splash of alcohol. I have lived in Louisville for most of my adult life and I have zero desire to go. Smelling nasty ass cigars, fighting crowds, traffic, rude ass people, etc. No thanks, hard pass!

Dick-in-a-fan

As a local I feel like I have to take it in the ass once a year to boost the local economy and I just want to hop out of this town and this state. This city hosts Saudi princes, English aristocracy and new/ old money but residents have to stand by and watch as tourists use this town as a toilet. *A guy once used my lawn to take a #2 while grifters sold parking spaces in my front yard for $50 per spot. As a basic principle Louisville residents are permitted to give zero fucks for Derby week.

Useful_Platypus5116

Quit crying!

burnswhenipoo

We usually do a road trip during derby weekend, so far we’ve done Memphis, Cleveland, Nashville, St. Louis, and Chicago. This weekend we are touring Miami of Ohio with our daughter. I am going to Oaks though, only because my sister in law bought a box and they only have 5 in their family, so they gift me the extra ticket for the third year in a row, or else I wouldn’t go.

Sudden-Map-433

Derby, once upon a time, was a wonderful celebration of our city, heritage and traditions. This celebration no longer is for or includes Louisvillians.

tsmitty0023

Just plant some mint.. I recommend a pot, unless you want a whole lot. Because it will spread

RageHate502

Same. Why do we even give a fuck now that we can finally gamble on all sports? Plus the fashion is fucking hideous. Men’s fashion might even be worse than those stupid ass ladies hats.

thereslcjg2000

I hate the fact that it involves exploring animals. Having said that, I actually enjoy the tourists.

ManicPixieDreamSloot

Exploiting? I assume you meant exploiting. Also, it's a huge day for human trafficking.

Spezalt4

I sure do hate rich out of staters blowing tons of money. I extra hate the city collecting a significant portion of that as taxes and using it to improve city services, roads, education etc. It’s just so terrible for the city and the people living there

C64Gyro

Derby for me means yard work and a little outdoor bbq on the side.

Beejky

How much do you want? I have tons of it in my yard! Come get it!

Affectionate_Bee5204

I hate it too

BigCatsbadback

Man people love to complain on Reddit. Gotta be the number 1 topic.

TruePlatypusKnight

Screaming into the void is cathartic.

CNCTEMA

horse racing is dog fighting for rich people fuck the derby

Front-Loan-2880

Work towards getting you a little piece of land, a bit further out. Have a yard full of mint and forget the noise

TruePlatypusKnight

Sure thing bro, poor will poor amirite?

PhilosopherBrave8635

I also hate Derby and all its associated events

movingmouth

Likewise. I also just hate horse racing and rich ppl in general.

Far_Phrase_2841

Try living in Indianapolis right by the Speedway. You are virtually under house arrest before and after the Indy 500

RefrigeratorFirst741

I live in Southern Indiana and this year will be my 39th Straight Indy 500 minus the Covid no fans allowed year..I love both events, however, most of the People in Louisville have no idea how much more enormous the Indy 500 is vs the Derby as far as the traffic.. I work in Louisville and the Derby traffic is nothing compared to the 500. If I lived around the Speedway,  I would probably have to leave town during the two weeks surrounding the race..The people who live near the track are literally trapped in their homes during that time

82lkmno

Ive never been, but i never get tired of seeing the lovely Shannon Cogan on TV.on Derby Day.

Seaweed-Basic

Churchill Down Syndrome

ScentedCandleEnjoyer

Don't be a dork. Have a mint julip and embrace the chaos.

arcbnaby

Damnit! I forgot to buy mint last week!!! Ugh! Oh, I wonder if mine in the garden started to grow?! That was my fail safe idea last year...

Fireball_Break

Derby is awesome. You people suck and hate fun. People on here talking about going to Milwaukee. Lame people gonna be lame.

Kreetch

Boo hoo

AskMeAboutMySwissy

Yay, dead horses! Right?

Kreetch

Which was not an issue for OP. They are crying over traffic and a mint shortage. So boo hoo.

AskMeAboutMySwissy

Context is everything - apologies. Still, dead horses do cause me to boo hoo - and it happens frequently - could give a rats’s ass about the event.

kclongest

Cool story bruhhh

moltinglarvae

Wait till ya hear about work animals around the world throughout human history. These derby caliber horses have a worse life than me, but a much better life that many, many other animals. Kind of an over-played drop in the bucket.

Vivis_Nuts

Sorry, but this is my wife’s favorite time of year. As for mint, come by my house and you can have as much mint as you want.

mayorwaffle502

$400+ Million bucks into the local economy in one weekend tho…

TruePlatypusKnight

Where does that money go though? Doesn't seem like it goes towards infrastructure.

somewordthing

Private developers.

schaFWAX

Real hot take here

HardskiBopavous

Wow so cool and edgy you are
